submitted the winning
name of Savages. Other suggestions included
Bull Terriers, Go-Getters, Lions, Golden Tigers, Golden Oriole, Hawks,
Old Gold Warriors, Little Hawkeyes, and Specials.
The 1947 yearbook was entitled “The Savage.” Indian imagery
infiltrated yearbooks throughout the years to follow. The main image or
“logo” associated with the name Savages centered around the images
shown at left. The earliest logo found was the silhouette profile which
can be seen in the photo at right (graphically simulated at top left).

In 1989, controversy arose when schools adopted a multi-cultural
approach to school curriculum. The name Savages was deemed as
derogatory to Native Americans as the word savage was defined in

Day as: Not domesticated or cultivated;

Dictionary
wild. Not civilized, barbaric. Ferocious; fierce. Vicious or merciless;
brutal. Lacking polish or manners; rude. Faced with changing a
long standing tradition versus possible legal recourse, the school
compromised by dropping the Indian logo and retaining the name. A
contest was run in the local paper asking the community to submit a
new image which was to be “non-human and free of obscenity”.
