JAKARTA
The Capital City and the main
gateway to Indonesia. A metropolitan
city that offers various attractions,
from leisure, recreation, culture, to
many shopping centers. It is well
known for its National Monument
(Monas), located in front of the
presidential palace and open to the
public. You can see across the city to
the sea with the bird’s eye view from
the top of Monas.
Ancol or Jakarta Bay City is the most
popular and largest recreation park.
Its attractions include Sea World, swimming pools, artificial lagoons,
bowling alleys, Dunia Fantasi, golf courses, luxurious hotels, a 4
dimension theatre, art markets, open air theatres, an assortment
of nightclubs, restaurants and massage parlors. By using ferries
or chartered boats from Tanjung Priok, we can reach Pulau Seribu
(Thousand Islands), a haven away from the bustle of city life and
a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers. Taman Mini Indonesia
Indah is a recreational cultural park, showcasing the ethnic cultures
and traditions of the 30 provinces in Indonesia. It is also called the
Indonesian Miniature Park.

For the shopaholic, Jakarta is the perfect place for you. Lots of high
class malls can be found all over Jakarta. There are also shopping
centers that offer the best price ranges for you, such as the Tanah
Abang Market, Mangga Dua and Glodok.
Learn the history of Indonesia’s past. The National Museum offers
historical, pre-historical, archaeological and ethnographic aspects of
Indonesia. See the old fort and trading post of the Dutch East Indies
Company, the remnants of Kasteel Batavia, in Sunda Kelapa which

foot. It is the most populous island and the 13th largest island in
the world. The island is administratively divided into four provinces
(Banten, West Java, Central Java, and East
Java), one special region (Yogyakarta),

One of the seven wonders of the world,
the Borobudur Temple, decorates the
landscape of Java. Located in Magelang,
Central Java, it is the biggest Buddhist
temple and has the largest and most
complete ensemble of Buddhist reliefs
in the world. Only 3 km from Borobudur,
you can find the Mendut Temple. The
Prambanan Temple, the most

KALIMANTAN
Well known as “The Island of God” (Pulau Dewata). People refer
to it as ‘paradise’ because of the friendly and hospitable people,
spectacular sandy beaches for surfing and diving, lush and
beautiful rice terraces, volcanic hillsides, and the magnificent
spiritual culture.
Well known as Borneo, with its amazing natural beauties. Bukit
Raya-Bukit Baka National Park in West Kalimantan, endowed
by nature with a rainforest, rugged landscapes, mountains and
meandering rivers, a perfect place for those who love nature
adventures.
Bali’s art and culture are heavily influenced by Hinduism. Thus,
there are many Hindu temples in Bali. Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s
most important sea
temples, built at the
top of a huge rock
surrounded by the
sea. The biggest
and holiest of all
Balinese temples
is Besakih, located
on the slope of Mt.
Agung.

Come to Nokanayan,
where
a
hidden
paradise is waiting for
you. Nokanayan and
Nokan Jengonoi are
two amazing waterfalls
in the heart of Borneo,
with a height of more than 200 meters. Tanjung Puting National
Park, a nature and wildlife reserve in Central Kalimantan, is the
place where we can see orangutans, owa-owas, bekantans and
other primates. See the long-nosed and red dish-turred monkeys
(bekantan) at Kaget Island in South Kalimantan, which is also the
home of various kinds of birds. The Black Orchid, or “Cologenia

hotels and home-stays, restaurants, shops, discotheques and other
tourist facilities. Kuta is the most popular one, offering a beautiful

West Nusa Tenggara consists of Lombok and Sumbawa islands.
Lombok is famous for its soft white sand and virgin beaches. Gili
Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan are three islands just off the
northwest coast of Lombok. These Gili Islands have magnificent
coral gardens that are abound in crystal clear waters, serving as the
perfect tourist spots for snorkeling and diving. Visit The Senggigi
Beach, the most scenic and popular beach of Lombok. We can
also find Mount Rinjani, the 3rd highest mountain in Indonesia and
its sacred crater lake, Segara Anakan, which lies in the volcano’s

the world. Observe the natural tropical forest and the rare singlehorned rhino at Ujung Kulon National Park, one of the world’s

Narmada Park, a pleasure garden and place to worship Shiva, was
built to represent Rinjani Mountain and its crater lake. There is a big
pool and close to it, there is a water spring that is believed to give
dedicated pilgrims eternal youth. The spring is located about 11km
from the east of Mataram.
East Nusa Tenggara, dominated by three main islands, Flores,
Sumba, and Timor, has the most visited natural views. One of
Indonesia’s most mysterious and dramatic sights is found on the top
of Mount Kelimutu. The major tourist attraction is the spectacular
view of its three crater lakes, each with a distinct color. Between
Sumba and Flores, we can find Komodo Island, a nature reserve
and a home to a number of rare species of birds, deer, and wild
pigs. It is also famous for its giant pre-historic lizards, the Komodo
‘dragon’, growing up to 3 or 4 meters in length and over 130 kg in
weight.
The most beautiful beach for surfing is Nemberela Beach, located
at the south west part of Rote Island. Come and try the rough
surfing from June to October.
MALUKU
Also known as Moluccas or Moluccan Island, Maluku is blessed
with incredible sea gardens, idyllic tropical beaches and rugged,
forest-coated volcanic mountains. It is home to many exotic birds,
such as the brilliantly-colored king fisher, the red-crested Moluccan
cockatoo, many multy-colored lorikeets, and parrots.
The capital city of
Maluku is Ambon.
We can find
a number of
interesting
historical
and cultural
sites here,
such as the
Christina
Martatiahahu Monument. There are also the ruins of a
Portuguese fort at Hila, the remnants of forts that were
built by the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) during the
heyday of the spice trade. The ANZAC War Cemetery
was built to commemorate the Allied soldiers who died
in the region during World War II. Also find the old VOC
forts, Belgica, Nassau and Hollandia on Banda Island. On
Morotai Island, an important air base during World War II,
many wrecks of aircrafts and rusting guns lie abandoned
in the bushes and still litter the island.

For water adventurers, in West
Kalimantan you can visit Gunung
Palung National Park with its hot
springs, lakes and caves. Karimata

and sea cow, just come to Derawan
and Sangalaki Island, and enjoy the
amazing marine environment. You
can also try the white-water rafting at
Dayak is the traditional tribe of Kalimantan. See the Dayak
traditional longhouse at Tanjung Isuy. The Mandau or machetes,
the traditional weapons usually carried by the Dayaks, are made
at Nagara. You can see the handmade process of the making of
the Maundau there. Catch the rare glimpse of the Dayaks and their
customs at the Erau Festival, held in Tenggarong every September,
featuring dancing, music, rituals and canoe races.
Visit Muara Kuin on the Barito River in Banjarmasin to see one of
the floating markets. Traverse along the river by `klotok’ (river bus)
or by speedboat for longer trips.
The equator monument in Pontianak city is the spot where the
equator divides the earth, and you can also enjoy an astronomical
experience twice a year there.
At Liang Beach in Ambon and Namalatu Beach, about 15 km from
Ambon, look out for its white sand, coral beach and crystal clear
unpolluted water. About 132 km southeast from Ambon, perched
on the rim of Indonesia’s deepest sea, is The Banda Island. It is the
site of Maluku’s famous sea gardens with their fantasy-land coral
reefs and kaleidoscopic array of multi-colored fish. For amazing
snorkelling and diving, visit Pulau Karaka, Pulau Pisang and Pulau
Ai. Named Pintu Kota (The Gate of the City), a huge rock stretches
out to the sea with a hole at its bottom which looks like a gate,
through which we can see the coast line and the Banda sea.
Sumatra
The westernmost island of the Indonesian archipelago lies here in
Sumatra. Its well known landmarks include the Ampera Bridge and
the famous Jam Gadang.
We can find many ecological
sceneries and adventuring in
Sumatra, such as hiking to the peak
of Mount Leuser National Park in
Aceh, and rafting at the Alas River
that flows into the Indian Ocean.
There is the Ngarai Sianok, a steep
colourful valley surrounded by high cliffs. Visit Lake Toba, the
largest lake in South East Asia and the deepest lake in the world.
The Samosir Island is in its center area, which is the ideal place to
relax, swim, go skiing, boating, canoeing, fishing and golfing. Want
to go surfing? Go to Mentawai Island, find the great waves and
beautiful coral reefs there.

the 19th century in
Bukittinggi. Even on
Mentawai island you
can see people that
still live in comparative isolation, maintaining their age-old ways.
Historical sites include the Batu Sangkar, Muara Takus Temple (that
was built around the 9th century A.D.) in Riau, Fort Marlborough
(built between 1714-1719 and the second strongest fort built by
Britain in Asia), Soekarno’s Residence (the place where the first
president of Indonesia was exiled by the Dutch in 1938, and now a
museum) in Bengkulu.
In Kerinci Regency, we can find Lake Kerinci, Mount Kerinci and
Kerinci Seblat National Park which is the home to various animal
species such as elephants, Sumatran tigers, rhinos, tapirs and so
on. There is also an orangutan rehabilitation center in Bukit Lawang,
North Sumatra, and the Sembilang National Park, that has a 45.000
sq hectares of wildlife reserve. It is home to various kinds of birds.
Don’t forget to see the most fascinating nature charms in Bengkulu,
the exotic Raflesia Arnoldi flower.
When you are in Sumatra, you must see their cultural heritage.
These include the Seudati Dance from Aceh, ‘Stone Jumping’ in
SULAWESI
in South Sulawesi with the most beautiful brightly-coloured ornithoid
butterflies. You can also visit the Tamasapi Waterfall in West
Sulawesi as well as Maramo Waterfall in South East Sulawesi with
127 separate terraces.
Formerly known as Celebes, it is the 11th largest island in the world.
So many beautiful places exist for diving, snorkeling, swimming,
water skiing or boating. Bunaken boasts with a dense population of
fish, coral and deep underwater caves, gullies and valleys. Pantai
Olele in Gorontalo, presents the amazing beauty of underwater
life.

Hari in South
East Sulawesi is
blessed with gorgeous coral reefs. Also, the way the sun’s rays
reflect off the water surrounding the island makes people call the
island the ‘Island of Daylight’. For rafting adventure, try Lairiang
River, the longest river in Sulawesi. The Lore Lindu National Park,
is a world-class venue for white water rafting. Also visit Lake Poso,
a wonderful place for relaxing.
The Dumoga Bone National Park in North Sulawesi, Lore Lindu
in Central Sulawesi, and Lambusango and Kakenauwe Protected
Forest in South East Sulawesi are the places where you can see
the rare species of animals such as maleo birds, anoas, hornbills,
kuskus and Tarsius spectrums (the smallest primate in the world).
Tana Toraja lies on the wonderful scenery of lush valleys and rice
fields sheltered by rocky cliffs. It is well known for its architectural
masterpiece, the Tongkonan Houses. In the Torajan Village, you
can see the ancient culture and ceremonies like the cliff graves, a
cave hollowed out in high cliffs to place coffins into. At the mouth of
the cave lifelike statues called Tau Tau stand guard. Londa is one of
the oldest hanging grave sites in Sulawesi.
Also see the traditional boatbuilding techniques at Bulukumba and
the Sandeq Boat Race, an annual traditional Mandar boat race in
West Sulawesi that is held in August.
Be amazed by the sparkling falling waters at Bantimurung Waterfall
PAPUA
This most eastern and largest island in Indonesia, is the second
largest island in the world. Enjoy the beautiful natural landscape of
Papua by visiting Lake Sentani and take a boat ride. For diving and
snorkeling, go to the coral triangle, the heart of the world’s coral
reef biodiversity. Visit Raja Ampat, an archipelago with the highest
marine life diversity in the world. It also contains Cendrawasih
Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia. On Biak Island,
see the bird of paradise and other rare species in the bird park in
Bosnik.
Snowcapped mountain peaks towering over glacial lakes, Mount
Carstenz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) is the highest in the ocean
continent (4.884 m above sea level).
Honay is the traditional house of Papua, shaped housing with
coarse grass roofs and wooden walls without windows. You can
find them in Wamena in the Jayawijaya Regency. Along the remote
southeast coast, live the Asmat people, famous for their artistic
‘primitive’ woodcarving and other treasures. The right chance to
observe the rich culture of the hinterland is by seeing The Baliem
festival, the massive tribal attraction involving all native groups on
the surrounding area of the giant valley. All tribes will bring their
attributes, kotekas, art and crafts. The festival is held every August
or September each year.

HANDiCRAFTS
While in Java, collect the famous
leather
puppets,
hand-carved
wooden puppets, hand-woven and
painted cottons and silks, embroidery,
bamboo furniture, teak carvings,
leather goods, silverwork, and shellornaments. Take a little of Java home
with you by walking along Malioboro
Street in Yogyakarta, where there are
hundreds of shops and street side
traders offering many varieties of
export quality art goods. Visit Pasar
Bali is a handicraft paradise for modern
artwork collectors. In every tourist area
you can find hand-carved wooden
statues and screens, hand-woven and
painted cottons and silks, paintings,
silverwork and many more. Try Pasar
Seni Sukowati that offers alluring
ranges of Balinese goods in one place.
Collect Kain Sambas and the
Dayak weaving cloth when you are
in Kalimantan. Buy souvenirs like
a miniature equator monument, a
Bandong traditional boat miniature,
ceramics, pandanus plaited bags, bamboo plaited baskets and
Dayak scimitars or Mandaus.
In Sulawesi, collect the beautiful Kerawang embroidery, traditional
silk weavings from Sengkang, painted and carved woodwork from
Toraja.
Beringharjo in Yogyakarta and
Pasar Klewer in Solo to collect the
famous batik and lurik cloths.
The West and East Nusa Tenggara are famous for their ikat handwoven textiles, potteries and Sasando, a traditional harpe which is
made of palm leaves.
Your best buy when you are in
Sumatra are ulos, the traditional
hand-woven cloth original from
North Sumatra, and a songket,
a magnificent fabric made by
womenfolk, brocaded with gold
and finished with gold bobbin
lace.
From Maluku and Papua,
there are interesting
collections
of
local
handicrafts, such as
ships made from cloves,
mother-of-pearl collages,
weavings and primitive
carvings and also Asmat
woodcarvings.
