INSIDE Local Students Win D.A.R. Essay Contests
by Lyn Bentson
The Serrano Chapter of the
Daughters of the American
Revolution hosted a "Tea" on
Saturday, January 13th, to honor
the winners of this year's DAR
Essay Contests. Over 40 students
from local schools participated
in the contests this year! The
winners received a check, a
bronze medal or lapel pin, and a
certificate for framing.
Winning students in attendance read their essays at the
Tea, for an audience of family
members, teachers, school administrators, Glendora City
Councilmembers, and DAR
members.
Their winning essays were
forwarded to compete at the Dis-
trict Level, a much larger area
of Southern California. We are
proud to announce that Shannon
Kent's essay won at this level as
well, and has already been forwarded to compete at the State
Level. Good Luck, Shannon!

Donors Recognized at Glendora Public Library
The Glendora Public Library Friends Foundation honored
their generous financial supporters at an elegant hors d'oeuvres
and wine reception at the Glendora Library. Recognition of
library donors is an annual event hosted by the Friends Foundation, a non-profit group that provides volunteer and financial support to the library. Foundation President, Gordon
Trask opened the celebration by thanking the community
for its overwhelming support of the library.
The Friends Foundation has established a Donor Wall in
the Library, recognizing donors throughout the community
who have made cumulative financial contributions of $500
or more to the Friends Foundation in support of library services. There are 332 donors representing more than $2 million in cash and in-kind donations currently listed on the recognition plaques. "We want the community to celebrate their
accomplishments and recognize how their financial support
benefits all of our library users and the residents of Glendora,"
commented Robin Weed-Brown, Library Director.
A highlight of the event was a special presentation to Mike
and Marcia Conway and Art and Sarah Ludwick for their

All women, whether working
or staying at home, desire what
their grandmothers created with
family dinners. But, who has the
time in today's world to spend
hours every day preparing dinner?
With My Girlfriend's Kitchen
now open in Glendora, that desire can become a reality!
Started by the mother/daughter team of Gloria Perea and
Monica Cosio, this innovative
idea is making homemade dinners fun and easy.
Customers spend less than 2
hours mixing all the fresh ingredients for up to 12 family-sized
dinners that they have made
themselves.
While customers enjoy the
cozy atmosphere, along with
coffee and snacks, preparing
meals is actually fun and not a
chore.
Bring a group of girlfriends
and enjoy a day out together or
come alone and meet some new
friends.
Customers assemble the meals
in the store according to printed
recipes at each station, resembling salad bars. Once a meal is
assembled, it is then packaged in
aluminum 9 X 13 deep pans or
plastic storage bags, or even split
into half for smaller households.
Printed labels are then placed on
each meal with cooking instructions, nutritional facts, diet points
and side and wine pairing suggestions.
With 14 new entrees available
every month, there's something
to please everyone in your family. Sessions are available
Wednesday-Saturday, with
Wednesday and Thursday having late sessions available until
6:00 pm. Tried something new
and the family didn't like it? No
problem! All entrees are 100%
guaranteed.
A "six-pack" costs $149, and
provides meals for six days, serving up to six people. Twelve family-sized meals cost $239, which
is the best value at around $3.00
per serving.
To schedule your meal-making session, call My Girlfriend's
Kitchen at (626) 963-9804 or
order on-line at [email protected]. My Girlfriend's Kitchen is
located at 201 North Glendora
Avenue, Suite A, in the Downtown Village.

Candlelight Pavilion Theater: Great
Food And The Best Entertainment
My wife, Madeline, and I had
a most delightful, relaxing, fulfilling and enjoyable matinee visit
to the Bollinger's Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theater on Saturday, February 10th. After arriving at about 11:20 a.m., and entering the theater to be seated
right in the center area, directly
in front of the stage, to relax and
enjoy the instrumental guitar
playing of Michael Ryan,. the
waiters and the bus boys were
hurrying around serving the fruit
bowls and bread rolls. The food
service is superb and your water glass never gets empty. After
listening to the music until about
12:30, with a very short break,
the curtain rose to start a great
musical-play rendition billed as "I
Love You, You’re Perfect, Now
Change" by John LaLonde. This
is John's third production at the
Candlelight Pavilion, after
"Nunsense" and "The Wonderful
Bill Singleton
World of Christmas". We have
attended three previous dinnermusical play productions, and
have never been disappointed
with the great food and drink
offered, or the great musical productions that are also part of our
attendance. Each time, we can't
wait to get seated, served and
entertained. You will never be
disappointed, no matter when or
what production you and your
friends attend.
For those who have never been
to Bollinger's Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theater in Claremont,
you are missing out on a great
place to take the family for one
of the greatest dinner and entertainment outings. The present
musical / performance extravaganza of "I Love You, You're
Perfect, Now Change" has
scheduled a special Valentine's
Day performance that makes a
great gift for your Valentine. Call
(909) 626-1254 for ticket and
show times. This musical spans
a generation of time.
The cast of " I Love You,
You're Perfect, Now Change"
includes Steve Gunderson, Victor Hernandez, Leigh Scarritt and
Joy Yandell playing many roles.
Musical background is provided
by Dave Osborn at piano and a
violin back-up by Daniel
Morefield, with all staging and
performances directed by John
LaLonde. The Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theater has an elegant, relaxing atmosphere that
will charm you and your guest
the moment you step through the
doors. It's a wonderful place to
take your family, a date or a business associate. Operating now
for over 20 years by the talented
Bollinger family members, with
an award winning gourmet dinner cuisine included in your ticket
pricing, you won't find a better
entrainment package anywhere.
The 2007 season includes
these specific dates for one day
musical performances as fol-

Nights", March 16th - "We Five",
April 20th - "A Ticket To Ride",
June 7th - "Space Oddity", June
8th - "Jim Galucci", June 9th &
10th - "Michael Ryan", with
many others scheduled through

in the later dates. Future musical
dinner-performances are as follows: March 9th through April
1st. "Mid Life" the crisis musical, June 15th through July 8th,
"The Fantastiks", July 12th
through July 22nd, "Seussical"

for tickets and reservations.
What a great anniversary, birthday, or just to let your friends
know how much you appreciate
them by taking them out to see
and dine at the Candlelight Pavilion. Doors open about a half-hour
before the action starts to let you
relax and get acquainted with
other guests or talk to those you
brought with you. No other entertainment arenas exist in the
San Gabriel Valley area that offer you superb dining with
award-winning shows at a reasonable price.
The Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theater is located at 455 W.
Foothill Blvd., Claremont, just
west of Indian Hill Blvd. off the
10 Freeway.
My wife, Madeline, and I have

Mayor Tessitor Gives ‘State of the City’ at Kiwanis
G
by Dave Culp
LENDORA —
Mayor Doug
Tessitor brought
the "State of the
City" message to
the Glendora Kiwanis.
“The big issue each year is
budget, and where the money is
coming from.
With the development of the
Auto Mall, Market Place, WalMart and the County of Los Angeles Child and Social Services
bringing in over 600 new jobs,
our city is very solvent and not
needing to charge any utility
taxes to cover budget short falls,
as some valley cities have had to
do.
There are more commercial
business developments going on
in town, now that will help support our city.
They are The Diamond Ridge
retail development next to the
Market Place, the Route 66 Park
Place apartments, the new bank,
and retail center on the corner
of Grand and Rt. 66, the new
Best Western that replaces an old
Motel on Route 66, the mixed use
Morgan Group development that
is going on the corner of
Glendora Ave. and Rt. 66, two
mixed use projects on Glendora
Ave. in our downtown and another downtown on Vermont.
It is nice to see that our city is
being pro-active in developing
projects that will sustain our city
in the long term.
Other issues discussed were
our aging water system and what
is being done to rebuild this 50
year old system.
This is a project that should
have been done many years ago
when costs were less.
Paying in advance for trash
pick up? Yes we are, but the upside is that we are not limited to
what or how much we put out
for pickup.
It is ALL picked up!
It looks like the Louie Pompei
park project is nearing completion. We will have a “sneak-peek”
Saturday, Feb. 24th at 11 a.m.
This will be a wonderful addition to our city parks and recreation department.”

BRIAN LEE
JONES
Back on the launch of the
original Xbox there was a title
called Fuzion Frenzy that was
pretty clearly an attempt to mimic
the successful and fun Mario
Party titles from Nintendo. While
the original Fuzion Frenzy was
pretty fun, it was missing some
key features, which thankfully
where looked into for the sequel
on the Xbox 360.
Fuzion Frenzy 2 for the
Microsoft Xbox 360 is the ultimate party game for gamers of
all ages. Mixing mini games with
an innovative card system, players can battle online or offline
with up to three other players in
over 40 mini games. The developers this time are actually from
HudsonSoft, the same group behind the Mario Party games.
While lacking in a lot of charm
and character, Fuzion Frenzy
makes up for it with a fast paced,
mini game focused party game
that is easy to pick up and fun to
play.
The mini games are quite varied, ranging from battling in
tanks, attacking each other with
flamethrowers and some simplistic button mashing games like
conveyor smash or turbine
jumper. Classics like the Super
Monkey Ball clone that has players rolling around in metal orbs
trying to knock each other off
and many other types of games
keep the game fast paced and
fresh.
While mainly focused on the
mini games, there is an inventive
new twist with the card battle
system in which the four players scramble to collect cards in
a quick 5 second battle. The
cards multiply your points for the
next round, giving you an advantage even if you lose the game.

This makes the gameplay more
random and evens things out
for gamers who don't play

move for keeping things fun

Diamond Ring Roundelay
Who would ever expect to find
a lovely diamond ring lying in the
parking lot of a market? You can
imagine my surprise when I
picked it up. Many questions
crossed my mind. How did it
get there? Did it slip off of
someone's finger? Did someone
get mad at her boyfriend and
throw it away? Was someone
grieving and upset when they
found it missing?
I called the store and told them
I had found a ring and would like
to return it to the owner. I gave
them my name and phone number expecting the phone to ring
at any moment. I prayed and
asked God to let the owner of
the ring contact me. Nothing
happened for about seven weeks.
Then one evening a message was
left on our answering machine
asking if I happened to be the
person who found a diamond
ring in the market parking lot. I
responded to the call. The lady
who owned the ring had put it in
her pocket, not knowing that
there was a hole big enough for
the ring to slip through.
Of course, I had to write a
poem to tell you all about it:
DIAMOND RING ROUNDE-
LINES FROM LORIE
By Lorie Pope Pauly
LAY
When I stepped out of my car,
I could not believe my eyes,
When I picked it up,
Much to my surprise,
I held a lovely diamond ring,
In my bewildered hand.
Why it was lying in a parking
lot,
I could not understand.
I left my name and phone
number,
At the very nearest store,
Hoping that the owner,
Would come knocking at my
door.
Weeks went rushing by,
And there was no reply.
Why didn't someone claim it?
I often wondered why.
I asked God to help me,
As I bowed my head in prayer.
I wanted to return the ring,
And do what I knew was fair.
In another part of town,
A young woman, too, was
praying.
"Please help me find my ring!"
Were the words that she was
saying.
The store had given her the
wrong number,
When she made her frantic
call.
No one knew how to help her.
She got nowhere at all.
Finally a telephone operator,
Listened to her plea.
Took the time to aid her,
And she finally found me!
When I returned her lovely
ring,
We both became aware,
That God had solved the
problem,
When we called out to Him in
prayer.
The moral of this story is:
When things seem hopeless,
don't dismay!
No matter what befalls you,
Get on your knees and pray!!!

COVINA — Around 12:30
PM on Saturday, February 10th,
there was a traffic collision in the

A white sedan was traveling

After turning into the left turn

As the sedan continued with
its turn, it was struck almost
headon by a pickup truck. Both
vehicles suffered major damage.
The male driver of the sedan
received minor injuries and
would seek his own medical attention, if he felt the need to do
so.

Exercise - Clare
Morvay Turns
90 And Is Still
Teaching Fitness
MONROVIA — Age is just a number
to Santa Anita Family YMCA fitness instructor Clare Morvay who turned 90 on
Tuesday, January 30.
She's been teaching her Total Body
Stretch class at the SAFYMCA in
Monrovia for 20 years and has no intention of slowing down, except maybe to
enjoy the birthday party that staff and her
students - many of them 30, 40, even 50
years younger than their teacher - plan to
have for her on Tuesday morning after
class.
"Clare is a tremendous testimony to the
benefits of regular exercise and staying
physically active.
She exudes what the YMCA is about spirit, mind, body said acting program director, Cheryl Reynolds.
Morvay teaches her stretch class at the
SAFYMCA twice a week, at 9:15 a.m. on
Tuesdays and Thursdays, and teaches a
Silver Sneakers class when her schedule
allows.
In her stretch class, Morvay's students
do not use any equipment.
"I want them to use their bodies," she
said.
Morvay also regularly conducts a
stretch and walk class at the Monrovia
Community Center, called Senior
Stompers, where some of her pupils have
been with her for over 10 years.
"We don't stomp grapes or anything,"
laughs Morvay. "We do our stretches and
then go take a walk around the neighborhood. You don't need all that equipment,
just walk," she said.
Morvay, a 40-year resident of
Monrovia, said she has always been active and athletic, and before her husband
died they would play golf together.
Morvay didn't start right out as a fitness instructor at the SAFYMCA.
Shortly after retiring from her job at
the former Crest Molded Products company in Monrovia in 1985 (where she
notes they made the plastic molded connector bodies for the first U.S. spacecraft
to land on the moon) she joined the
SAFYMCA as a member and signed up
as a student in the stretch class.
When the instructor quit, she was asked
if she would like to teach the class, and
did so on a volunteer basis for 10 years
before she became a paid instructor at
the age of 80.
Reynolds calls Morvay a tremendous
asset to the organization and the people
she meets, always demonstrating the
YMCA's four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
"Clare cares about her students and the
YMCA that she calls her family. We never
have to worry about her Total Body
Stretch class.
She is always on time, and never calls
in sick, and she always brings a smile to
my face," said Reynolds.
So, on her 90th birthday, her students
and the SAFYMCA says, thank you,
Clare, Happy Birthday and many, many
more. Hardly a stretch about someone so
loved and appreciated.
