First United Methodist
Music has had a long presence at
First United Methodist Church. Four of
our stained glass windows celebrate
the importance of music in worship to
God. Our church organs have led us in
singing since the 1870’s. Our tower bells
chime the hours and call us to celebrate
Christian fellowship with hymns of praise
of the season.
The versatile Sanctuary Choir leads the
congregation with many types of choral
music, in the classical, contemporary, spirituals, gospel, and folk genres.
First United Methodist Church also has a dedicated brass ensemble which routinely play for
services as a group and with the choir.
Our children meet each Sunday to learn Christian songs which they will perform for the
congregation. There are two bell groups who rehearse and perform pieces for our services.
The players are both church members and guest bell enthusiasts.
Central Christian Church
In 1833, following a revival meeting conducted by
Dr. Joseph Hostetler, a farmer and physician from
Indiana, the Disciples of Christ Christian Church
was started in Decatur. In 1834 Dr. Hostetler and
a small group of people familiar with Alexander
Campbell, Barton Stone and Walter Scott, (early
leaders of the movement) and who lived in the area
along the Sangamon River, gathered in the log
Court House which stood on the town square. This
group organized to become the Christian Church,
the third established church in Macon County.
In 1835 a simple structure of twenty square feet
was built for public worship. It was located on
land donated by Dr. Hostetler at the northeast
corner of Wood and Water Streets and was used for twenty years.
Since that time the church grew in number and so changed its buildings five times. The
present location at Monroe and William Streets was dedicated in 1955. The Nichols
Education Wing was added in 1988 to accommodate the church school and to enhance its
nursery school program.
At present the building, besides providing a beautiful setting for inspirational worship, a
Great Hall for fellowship events and wonderful space for church school classes, is home to
an active preschool program and several programs organized by Baby Talk. Central is also
a favorite venue for concerts, weddings and large group events.
Central Christian Church is part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It strives to
follow the early motto of our movement: “In essentials, unity, in nonessentials, liberty and in
all things, charity.”

First Lutheran Church
First Evangelical Lutheran Church is
beginning its 128th year of community
ministry in Decatur. Established in 1883,
the congregation built in the downtown
area as a way of expressing faith and love
in Decatur. First Lutheran is in its third home.
The William St. church was soon outgrown
leading to the purchase and remodeling of
the old Post Office building. First’s current
building is still contemporary in its design
and function, even though it is over 40 years old.
One of the strengths of the parish is its music ministry. The pipe organ was hand made by
the Hari Kriisa family, a family the church brought as refugees from Estonia. The Bell Choir,
Adult Choir and the Informal Worship Band are the center of the music leadership. We pray
that we at First Lutheran may be a blessing in the Lord’s Sight.

Julie McClarey & Bruce Gibbons- Opening Piano Duet
Julie McClarey and Bruce Gibbons are two talented Christian musicians that continually
share their musical talents with others. We appreciate their piano duet to open our Festival
of Church Choirs program.
JULIE MCCLAREY holds a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance from Millikin University
and has studied in Chicago, Nashville and the University of Illinois. Julie has been an adjunct
professor of piano at Millikin University and also a staff accompanist at Illinois Wesleyan
University. Currently, she is active as a private piano teacher and performer. She is a three
time winner of the World Championship Old Time Piano Playing Competition and has
appeared on the Pat Sajak talk show in Hollywood. Julie was a featured performer at the
International Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, MO and has judged the World Championship Old
Time Piano Playing Competition. She has entertained audiences in Branson and Nashville
where she was pianist/band leader of the Country Music, U. S. A. Show at Opryland, U.
S. A. She has accompanied the Grammy Award winning Blackwood Gospel Quartet and
has performed with Dino Karsonakis, gospel pianist; Jo Ann Castle of the Lawrence Welk
Show and Steinway artist Larry Dalton. She is a passionate performer who plays everything
from ragtime to Rachmaninoff and travels locally and nationally where she presents piano
concerts. She is the proud mother of three children.
BRUCE GIBBONS has been adjunct professor of music at Millikin University for 25 years,
where he teaches piano and organ and serves as pianist for opera and music theatre
classes and productions. He accompanies numerous student, faculty and guest recitals at
Millikin and has performed throughout the United States with various artists. During a typical
semester at Millikin, he will play recitals for 40 to 50 students and faculty. Dr. Gibbons
holds performance degrees from Colorado State University and Louisiana State University,
studying with Wendel Diebel and Jack Guerry. He is the organist at First United Methodist
Church and a bassoonist with the Decatur Municipal Band. In his spare moments, he enjoys
reading, back-packing and hiking. Of the 54 mountains over 14,000 feet in Colorado, he
has climbed all but 50 of them.

First Baptist Church
First Baptist Church has been a
presence in Decatur for more than
165 years. Throughout that time and in
several locations, the church’s ministry
has always included worship and music
combined with service to the local
community and missions around the
world. In 2005, the church moved to its
fourth home at 1320 Arbor Drive.
Pastor Steve Mechem sees “the ministry
of the church as inward and outward experiences that are sustained by grace and love.”
First Baptist makes an impact in the Decatur community through various ministries, including
the free MUSICAMP held each summer for elementary school children. The “Music For a
Season of JOY” concert series in December each year draws people from Decatur and the
surrounding area for concerts and complimentary luncheons. Other bridge events include
the Summer Block Party, Trunk or Treat, One Church - One School, Faith in Action Sundays
and Tail Gate Parties. Michael Waltenberger has been the Minister of Music since 1989.
First Baptist Church is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches/USA and American
Baptist Churches of the Great Rivers Region.
First Presbyterian Church
First Presbyterian Church is where “tomorrow meets today.”
Located in downtown for nearly 120 years, we are a diverse
congregation that draws members and friends from all of
Macon County. Extensive remodeling over the last few years
has produced a comfortable, well-suited home in a 19th
century building for a 21st century congregation.
Mission, ministry, and music are the common threads woven
together in this family of faith. People of many backgrounds
interweave their many talents to bring exciting life to our
congregation. Musical talents play a major role in the rich
diversity of our programs. All ages are also provided with
opportunities for education and fellowship. Church school
classes and adult education programs teach us the Good
News of the Bible while soup suppers, potlucks, workdays, retreats, walkathons, to name just
a few, bring us together to share in the Good News and to spread it to others.
Our congregation is a family that worships and prays together inside and outside the church
walls. We actively witness beyond ourselves through our common ministries. We share in the
joy of birth and the sorrow of death. We care for and visit those with physical illnesses; we
counsel and pray for those emotionally burdened. We celebrate all aspects of God’s gifts
and use them to build a strong church family.
As faithful followers of Jesus Christ, this progressive community of hope endeavors to be
an open, caring, compassionate congregation for all persons, regardless of age or gender,
race or sexual orientation. We celebrate, explore and demonstrate our faith in loving and
faithful service, and seek to bring about positive change in our community and world.

Tabernacle Baptist Church
Tabernacle Baptist Church has been ministering in Decatur since 1938. Originally
it was located at 2000 N. Main and after many expansion projects, ground was
purchased at 650 N. Wyckles Rd. across
from the Decatur Conference Center and
a new building was built. TBC has a vision
to “Gather, Grow, and Go”. Our Gathering on Sunday mornings celebrates God
for who He is and what He has done in
our lives. The Gathering helps people to
Respond to Him through relevant, indepth teaching and multi-generational music and other artistic expression. There are opportunities to be musically involved through our Worship choir, Orchestra, Vocal and Instrumental worship teams, Children’s Arts program called “Collage”, Sr. Adult Choir, Jazz
ensemble, and seasonal Handbells. Also, experience the community of fellowship as Life
Groups meet throughout the month to “Do life together”- praying, recreating, sharing,
and ministering through community ministry projects. Dr. Wes Feltner is the Sr. Pastor and
Chris Vieth is the Minister of Music and Worship Arts.
New Salem Baptist Church
New Salem Baptist Church is one of the oldest
African-American churches in the Decatur area. It
was founded by a missionary from the New Salem
Baptist District Association of Illinois, the Reverend
G.W. Walker, in September of 1928, and hence the
name of New Salem.
For most of its history, New Salem Baptist Church
was located in what was commonly known for
years as the East End of Decatur, in several different
locations, until it moved to its present location at
1415 North Edward Street. During its history as a church, it has had only seven pastors,
with the Reverend Samuel Wesley Hale, Sr., serving as its pastor for forty-nine years. New
Salem has never been a large church; but it has always been a good, strong church. Down
through the years it has developed a core of dedicated Christians, who have been faithful
to the work and mission of the church and its Christ, and it continues to do so. New Salem
Baptist Church of Decatur is involved in, and is well-known throughout the district, state and
national work of the denomination. At the present time, the church is without a pastor. The
Reverend Doctor Eddie Mabry serves as pulpit supply, until the new pastor is selected, and
as the Minister of Music.

Main Street Church of the Living God
The Main Street Church of the Living God
is the church where you will find friendship,
fellowship and love. Founder and Pastor
Overseer Thomas and First Lady Margaret
Walker and our church congregation
welcome sinners and saints to join
our family and experience a personal
relationship with God. Our Pastor has taught us to focus on others and realize that our
blessings come by serving those who are less fortunate and to realize that misfortune could
befall anyone on any given day.
To that end, we are known for taking our ministries beyond the church doors and helping
those who are in physical and spiritual need. For nearly 20 years, Main Street has worked
closely with community partners to ensure our local environment is safe, secure and healthy.
Located in the heart of the inner city, our doors are open seven days a week.
We have been blessed to feed those who hunger both physically and spiritually. Monday
through Saturday, we serve Decatur area youth through after school and summer
programming. Our youth ministry, Youth With A Positive Direction, connects young people
(ages 5-18) with progressive, constructive activities to decrease potential destructive
behaviors that could lead them down the wrong path.
Pastor Walker instructs our congregation to follow the example led by Christ our Savior and
that is to Simply Serve. He teaches that if we set our minds on Simply Serving God and his
people, you will reap a tremendous blessing for your family, church and community.
First Christian Church
First Christian Church is one of the
oldest churches in Decatur. Formerly
meeting in their old building on Church
Street, they now are situated on the
east side of MacArthur Road about
one half mile north of Pershing. Their
worship style would be considered
contemporary, yet they regularly
incorporate traditional elements as
part of their worship experiences. First
Christian Church invites you to join them for worship at any of 4 service times: Saturday
evenings at 5:00 p.m., and Sundays at 8:00 a.m., 9:20 a.m., and 10:50 a.m. The Worship
Arts department is led by Michael Engelhardt, Worship Arts Director; Bill Cunningham,
Associate Worship Leader; and Fred Saurmann, Technical Director. Wayne Kent serves as
the Senior Pastor of First Christian Church.
