Welcome to Mary Kay Karen
Welcome to Mary Kay
Dear “Super Star”!
I am so excited to be among the first to congratulate you on your decision to become an Independent Mary Kay Beauty Consultant. You are now a member of one of the most exciting units
in all of Mary Kay...Super Stars! We are delighted to have you on our winning team. We are a
top Unit and we want you to go to the top with us. There must be a million questions running
through your mind right now and I can assure you that this is normal. As your Sales Director, I
am going to guide you in taking the path that Mary Kay has set up for you to be successful. I
want to help make your career both profitable and fun!
Your journey in Mary Kay will be one of both personal and professional growth. I encourage
you, first and foremost, to be a good student. You can learn all you need to know about makeup in one day but you will spend years discovering yourself, developing people skills and mastering the art of attitude, time and money management. Your journey will be both exciting and
rewarding.
Your first few weeks in Mary Kay may seem like a whirlwind, but once you complete your initial
training, you will be prepared for SUCCESS! A support system of learning has been developed
just for you. Begin with this packet. Each assignment is designed to build a specific skill. When
your kit arrives, be sure to read your Mary Kay Career Essentials thoroughly at least once, listen to the cd’s, and DO WHAT THEY SAY. The company’s path to success is proven. If you
do what it says, your business will grow and so will your income! The company’s Mary Kay
InTouch Web site at www.marykayintouch.com is also an incredible source of training, ideas
and information to help you get started and grow every step of the way. We also have a Unit
website where you will find a monthly newsletter, training center and much more. I encourage
you to check in often to see what’s new: www.unitnet.com/karensaphos.
Your weekly success meetings and new consultant trainings are among your first steps to success. They should never be missed. Every week, consultants from our unit gather for training,
recognition, encouragement, motivation and PRIZES! It is a great time to learn, share and
bring guests to be your models or who may want information about the Mary Kay business opportunity. If you live outside the Houston area, I will assist you in finding an Adopted Director
so you can attend local Success events and training classes. After all, they are designed for
your success! Mary Kay always said, “If you’ve had a great week, the meeting needs you. If
you’ve had a challenging week, you need the meeting!” Always come with an attitude to learn,
share and grow.
I am excited to have the opportunity to work with you! I am committed to empowering you to
fulfill your mission. I will match my time with your efforts. Be patient with yourself and just take
it one step at a time. The seeds of greatness are planted within you!
Your Sales Director,
Karen

As a member of the “Super Stars” Unit, I would like to share a portion of our heritage with you.
You have joined one of the most prestigious, successful and best trained groups of women in
the Mary Kay organization.
We debuted as a brand new Unit in June of 1990. Just six short months later, we had our first
offspring unit! We have earned 9 Mary Kay Career Cars —one every two years since February
of 1980. That’s almost $300,000 worth of FREE cars!!!
We have achieved a Unit Club for the past six years, with a career high of $500,000 in one
year! We have sold in excess of $3,000,000 (three million) in Mary Kay products over our 14
years as a Unit. That’s a lot of lipstick, wouldn’t you agree?
There are a several women who have shared their desire to become Directors in our Mary
Kay “family”. When we reach our goal of five women reaching their dreams we will become an
Executive Sr. Sales Unit. That means that because of the women who have elected to promote themselves to Directorship, we will be on our way to becoming a National Sales Unit and
we will become one of less than 300 “Areas” in the entire Mary Kay company—world wide!
In order for us to take this step as a group, at least 5 more women will earn the position of
Mary Kay Sales Director. It could be YOU! It doesn’t take long to catch the vision of what Mary
Kay can mean to you, your family and your future, so should you decide to become one of
these women—I will teach you how and work with you every step of the way! Why not become
one of the highest paid women in America? More women earn in excess of $100,000 per year
in Mary Kay than in any other company in the United States! It can be YOU! Why not believe
that the next success story in Mary Kay belongs to you? If you can conceive it and believe it,
you can achieve it! Jump in. Join our mission, dream big dreams and watch what God will do
through you in this company. Mary Kay always said, “You can do anything you want to do, if
you want to do it badly enough —and you are willing to pay the price”.
Mary Kay Image & Attitude
Now that you are in the beauty business it’s important that you always look and act the part of a successful professional beauty consultant! You only get one chance to make a good first impression!
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Taking pride in your appearance is paramount! Your appearance is the outward
sign of your level of self-confidence and self-esteem.
ALWAYS wear a skirt or dress when conducting MK business, when holding
appointments, and attending trainings and meetings Slacks, jeans or shorts are
NOT acceptable attire for any MK function!
Keeping your starter kit and mirrors clean and neat is an important part of Business Etiquette. The same applies when you display personal items, such as a
compact.
You must wear the product. You are your best advertisement. Be sure your
makeup looks flawless!
Keep your automobile clean INSIDE and OUT as an outward sign of your commitment to professionalism.
Mary Kay offers custom career jewelry to enhance our wardrobe and recognize
your achievements. Wear your MK pin to advertise your new business!
Arrive at all appointments, events and meetings with a 100% positive attitude. It
is said that 90% of our success is in our attitude! It’s also been said that attitude truly does determine your altitude.
We believe what we hear most often, so be sure you are hearing positive words from yourself and others about your
business. Associate with positive people, and when something negative happens, shake it off and move on.
MEETING ETIQUETTE
1. Punctuality is very important now that you are
in business. Always arrive 10 to 15 minutes
early to all events, meetings, and appointments.
2. Make every effort to bring guests to all events.
3. Socialize with fellow consultants before and/or
after meetings or events, not during.
4. Talking and whispering during the meetings is
rude and disrespectful to the speaker and/or Director.
5. Chewing gum during meetings and/or events is
distracting and unprofessional. Mints or hard
candy are better choices.
6. Electronic devices such as cell phones and beepers should not be in use and should be turned off
during meetings and events.
7. Small children should not be brought to meetings
and/or events. You’ll want to arrange dependable
childcare for meeting and training times.
8. Cheer and applaud for others the way you would
want to be applauded.
9. Look for the best in everyone! In Mary Kay, we
“praise women to success”!
10. Mary Kay, Inc. asks that we refrain from smoking
or consuming alcoholic beverages at all Mary Kay
events and functions. Thank You!
BUSINESS TIPS
1. Contact your director several times a week for direction. I
am your Mary Kay coach, and the more personal training
you receive, the better you will become.
2. Fill out your Weekly Accomplishment Sheet each week
and bring a copy to Success meeting, email or online.
3. Always sell TimeWise or the Classic Basic as a set to the
first time customer. This will ensure that she receives the
full benefit of her purchase.
4. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. is people time. Keep calls in this slot.
5. Call ahead to confirm all appointments.
6. Remember to ask, “Is this a convenient time for you to
talk?”
7. Limit telephone conversations to three minutes. Time is
valuable...yours and hers.
8. When arriving at your customer’s home, knock on the
door and take a step back.
9. Take no more than two bags to the door at a time.
10. Deliver orders promptly and neatly. By law, products
must be in their boxes/packaging.
11. Label product on the bottoms and backs, never on top or
front and never on the boxes.
12. When a customer complains about a product, promptly
offer an alternative product or refund.
13. Send thank you notes to all hostesses for booking and
again for holding the class. Notes to new customers will
also be appreciated and say a lot about you!
Pearls of Sharing
You can earn your Pearls of Sharing immediately, honoring one of the things Mary Kay Ash asked all consultants to do:
share the information about Mary Kay with every woman to enrich her life! Whether you set out to build a team, women will
be curious about why you love what you do and how you make money. When an opportunity presents itself, with someone
you would love to work with, you will want to know how to share information and answer questions.
Earn your Pearls of Sharing Earrings simply by having three adult women listen to the Mary Kay
opportunity or attend an event as your guest with your first two weeks. This can be done at your or
my home, a coffee shop, the Success Meeting, or by phone with your Director. This can be done
individually or in groups.
Next, earn your matching Pearls of Sharing Bracelet by having 3 additional adult
women listen to the Mary Kay opportunity within your first month. Same guidelines
as above.
Then, earn your Pearls of Sharing Necklace by having your first new team member
during your first month. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 … simply by making a list of the sharpest women you
know, coordinating a time with your Director for the “sharing” sessions or binging them as your guests
to an event and turning in each coupon to your Director as you complete your challenge. You can do it!
Use this script to schedule the sharing sessions:
“Hi ______, this is _______. I am so excited! I’ve started my own home-based business with Mary Kay and I’m beginning
my training process. One of my first challenges is to learn how to share the Mary Kay story with other women. My director
has asked me to schedule three sharing sessions with the sharpest women I know and that’s why I’m calling YOU! I’ll earn
a beautiful pair of pearl earrings just by completing my challenge! Isn’t that exciting? Here’s what it entails … we’ll set a time
with my Director to share the benefits of Mary Kay and the marketing plan with you – I’ll be learning and in addition, getting
your valuable feedback on my new business. Who knows, it might be for you or it might be the last thing you would ever
want to do. But I feel comfortable with you and I’d appreciate your help so much.”

Organizing Your Samples & Inventory
I will share with you the ultimate organizational system and ways that you can improvise until you are ready to make the
investment in this optional & optimum system!
“Ultimate System” for organizing your samples: (I recommend this right from the beginning if at all possible. It will
make that much difference to you!)
Purchase a “double face case” from Get Organized Company
www.getorganizedco.com
800-245-0646
In this case you will organize ALL of your samples (full-size foundations, Look cards, cotton balls, disposable applicators, sponges, eye, cheek, lip colors, lip & eye pencils, lip
glosses, dual-coverage powder demos, etc. This is everything you will need to take to a
makeover (group or individual). THE BEST!
STORING YOUR EXTRA SAMPLES AT HOME:
Purchase two, 2-sided plastic hanging earring organizer with 40 pockets on each side (Container store, Wal-Mart, etc.).
Bag #1: One side will hold lipstick & lip gloss samples and the other side will hold eye color samples
Bag #2: One side will hold cheek color samples – the other side lip & eye pencils
Label each pocket with names of products in alphabetical order. You refill your double face case from these. When a slot
is empty, you’ll know it’s time to reorder!
Purchase a hanging shoe bag. I have one with 18 pockets that hangs on the back of my product closet door. This will be
used to store things like:
Cologne samples
Applicators
Sponges (removed fromthe back of dual-coverage powder samples)
Look Cards
Spa samples (lotion & body wash)
Etc.
It’s best to use a lateral file system for things like: beauty books, Look Books, sales tickets, profiles, etc. Make a hanging
file for each of these items, label it and keep each item in it’s folder. Of course, you can store these any way you like, but
learning to keep everything you can in a lateral file, saves lots of space and makes it much easier to find!
PACKING YOUR INVENTORY
First of all, the most important thing to pack is THE ROLL-UP BAG – “Total Pampering Package” set! Here’s
how: Take the items that are underlined out of their boxes/bag before placing in pocket. Leave all other items in their
boxes and place in pockets. You may want to fold the unused boxes and store in a ziploc bag in case you need them.
Pocket #1 – TimeWise 3-in-1 Cleanser, Moisturizer, Foundation, Day & Night Solution, Visibly Fit Body Lotion & AgeFighting Eye Cream.
Pocket #2 – Custom Compact, Dual-End Eye Applicator, Cheek Color Brush, 3 Eye Colors, Cheek Color, Lipstick, Eye
Liner, Lip Liner, Lip Gloss, Mascara, Lip Outliner & Eye Primer
Pocket #3 – Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover & Extra Hydration Moisturizer
Pocket #4 – Satin Hands & Satin Lips Mask & Balm
With this you are set to sell THE BAG! All you need to do is trade out: Cleanser, Moisturizer, Foundation, 3 eye colors,
cheek color, Lipstick, Eye Liner, Lip Liner, Lip Gloss, Mascara! If she chooses the Age-Fighting Moisturizer with SPF
instead of Age-Fighting Moisturizer – simply replace.…
It is so much easier to take things out of THE BAG to sell individually than it is to put the bag together with a customer
waiting. The ultimate is to have 4-6 BAGS ready to go at all times!
Organizing Continued …
Lip, Eye & Brow Pencils: rubber band all eye pencils together, lip pencils together and brow pencils together. Place all
three bundles in an empty Miracle Set bag (or bag of choice). When you need a pencil, all you have to do is grab the bundle and pull out the correct color! You can also bundle mascaras together and put in the same bag.
Least Expensive Way to Carry Inventory:
1. Go to Wal-Mart and purchase a large container box with a lid that folds on top (Sterilite 62 Qt.)
2. Go to the fishing & tackle department at Wal-Mart and purchase 3 clear plastic fishing tackle all purpose boxes. You’ll
use one for your cheek colors, one for your eye colors, and one for your duet eye colors and all applicators (sponges,
cheek color brushes, dual end applicators, retractable blush brushes and round powder brushes). Label the slots in alphabetical order and then put the products in each little square or rectangle.
3. Buy about 4 small plastic containers with flip top lids (Sterilite 7 Qt) Box #1: place your medium & full coverage
foundations. Box #2: lipsticks & glosses standing up with the names facing up, also will hold Lip Outliner Pencils and
Satin Lips Sets (masks & balms). Box #3: Dual-coverage & Crème -to-powder foundations lined up in a row so you can
read color, bronzing powders and concealers. Box #4: Custom compacts, foundation compacts, & loose powders.
4. In the big container with fold out lid, arrange cleansers, bars, moisturizers, Velocity, acne treatment gel, sunscreen, Intense Moisturizing Cream, Oil-Free Gel, Satin Hands bags, etc. There should be room to lay your eye & cheek color
boxes on their sides in this box too and to place the box with compacts, etc. in it. You should also be able to put in your
bag that contains all your pencils grouped together with rubber bands
This should give you everything you need, along with your filled ROLL UP BA GS to keep inventory in your trunk at all
times. If you live in a hot climate be sure and add blue ice that has been wrapped in a thin towel to collect condensation.
If it is extremely hot where you live you way consider putting everything in a cooler with the blue ice.
.
Ultimate Inventory Carrying System:
There are two companies (I prefer the one from MK)
1. Purchase the Wheeled Cosmetic Carrier & Slip-On Color Case. You can order this on the Mary
Kay web site www.marykayintouch.com on the bottom right side you will see a category call MK
connections.
2. Insulated Product Bag Set on Wheels. It comes with two smaller bags that link together, carrying
more product then one large bag and easier to handle. To order from Get Organized Company— 800-245-0646 www.getorganizedco.com
Once you’ve built your business and have a little extra cash on hand, this is a wonderful inventory system to have. Of course, you might be so used to and satisfied
with the Wal-Mart system, that you won’t have a need to switch!
What to take to a makeover (group or individual):
• Your binder with ALL your skin care class & recruiting materials (see organizing your binder for details).
•
Your double face case (listed above from Get Organized) with all your samples, headbands, cotton balls, sponges,
etc. (everything you need to demonstrate that isn’t in your starter kit.
• Your ROLL UP BAG for closing (lay on table and work out of THE BAG)
• Your Starter Kit with face cases (trays & mirrors), OR a large tote bag that all face cases will fit into stacked on top
of each other (two stacks), with your ROLL UP BAG and Binder placed on top.
You can either leave your inventory in the car and once you’ve helped each woman with her purchase ask someone
(usually the hostess) to join you outside while you fill the orders . It’s a good idea to keep a flashlight in your trunk so
you can read all the small names on the boxes! Or if space is available you can bring your inventory in with you. Re member, that order filling is made simple by packing all of your ROLL UP BAGS in advance and letting that be your
starting point for anyone who purchases THE BAG!
For those who purchase less than a BAG, simply take a Mary Kay plastic bag and fill it with all of the individual products
ordered. Be sure to give her a copy of her receipt, asking her to double check the contents of her bag or BAG! This saves
a lot of phone calls saying, “I didn’t get such and such.”

New Consultant Power Start Booking Approach
The following dialogue is for new consultants to use
with friends, family, co-workers or acquaintances to
book Perfect/Power Start. When I was new, it was
tempting to say, “I’m selling Mary Kay now”, or
“Would you have a party for me?” I’m so glad my
director taught me from Day One that conversational words like these don’t work! Booking has
always come very easily for me, because I simply
followed my director’s directions, mimicking her
phrasing & enthusiasm until I developed my own
confident, professional style.

and that way when you call your friends, you’ll have a specific time in
mind. You know … that way it will be more like an “invitation” to your

schedule to do something just for YOU? I would also value your opinion so much since it’s busy
women like you who made Mary Kay the #1 best selling brand in the U.S. today! I promise it will be
fun and be worth your time! What do you think … are you willing to help me? Great! Is _______ or
________ best for you?
Tried MK once: “Oh really? When was that?” (They will answer) “_____, I’m so glad you said that
because Mary Kay has changed so much since then! Did you know that Mary Kay is the #1 best selling brand of skin care & color cosmetics in the U.S. today? Is there any reason why you wouldn’t be
open minded to trying Mary Kay again AND help me complete my training? It will help me so much
and I think you’ll be glad you did!”
Already have a consultant: “Great – then you know just how great Mary Kay products are! You
know in Mary Kay we are careful not to infringe upon each other’s business so you would remain the
customer of your current consultant. However, it would be perfectly okay for you to introduce me to
some of your friends who do not have a consultant. This would really help me begin my business! Is
there any reason why you couldn’t help me to complete my training and spread the good news of
Mary Kay to the women you know? We’ll have lots of fun and I will be forever grateful for your support! Is ______ or ______ best for you?”
