Gulbenkian Film July 2016 2 / Gulbenkian Film Fri 1 Jul, 6.15pm Fri 1 & Tue 5 Jul, times vary The Jungle Book 3D Green Room (18) (PG) Disney’s new animated retelling of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book is a triumph. Raised by a family of wolves, Mowgli encounters an array of jungle animals in an epic journey full of fun, friendship and selfdiscovery. AD Patrick Stewart is a revelation in Jeremy Saulnier’s savage, gory and refreshingly shocking horror/thriller. Visceral and bloody, Green Room’s spiky bursts of violence are touched with both black comedy and sociological insight, in a brilliant mix that further cements Saulnier’s growing reputation as one of US indie cinema’s most innovative voices. Sat 2 Jul, 5.30pm Sat 2 & Wed 6 Jul, times vary Salt Of This Sea (no cert) Our Kind Of Traitor (15) Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir’s acclaimed drama – romantic, sad and exploratory – follows a woman from Brooklyn to the West Bank and Israel in search of her roots. When Soraya fulfils a lifelong dream of returning to Palestine she is confronted with the painful realities of the region’s past and present. Ewan McGregor, Damian Lewis, Naomie Harris and Stellan Skarsgård give superbly polished performances in Susanna White’s stylish, pacey and cleverly constructed spy thriller, based on the John le Carré novel. SUB Arabic w/Eng ST AD Gulbenkian Film / 3 Sun 3 Jul, 6pm Refugee Tales: The Immigrant (no cert) One of Charlie Chaplin’s most beloved short films, The Immigrant is a masterpiece of silent romantic comedy. It forms part of a free event held in partnership with the University of Kent School of English. Silent w/Eng intertitles Fri 8, Sat 9 & Thu 14 Jul, times vary A Hologram For The King (12A) Tom Hanks plays Alan Clay, a washed-up businessman who’s lost his house and his wife in the economic downturn. Desperate to turn things around, he travels to Saudi Arabia to try and sell a holographic teleconferencing system to the government. SUB Hard of Hearing subtitled screening Thu 14 Jul Sun 3 Jul, 8.15pm Fri 8 – Mon 11 Jul, times vary Fire At Sea (12A) Money Monster (15) Winner of the Golden Bear for Documentary at the Berlinale, Fire at Sea explores the chaos and despair of the ongoing migrant crisis. Set on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, one of Europe’s most symbolic borders, Gianfranco Rosi contrasts the settled lives of locals with the complete disenfranchisement of the migrants, desperately seeking a place of greater safety. George Clooney and Julia Roberts star in Jodie Foster’s terrific satirical thriller. Clooney plays Lee Gates, a Jim Cramer-esque financial TV personality who’s on-set delivering a show when he’s taken hostage by Kyle (Jack O’Connell), a viewer who lost all his money following a bad tip from Lee. SUB Italian w/Eng ST SUB AD Hard of Hearing subtitled screening Mon 11 Jul 4 / Gulbenkian Film Sun 10 & Wed 13 Jul, times vary Fri 15 & Sat 16 Jul, 8.30pm Embrace Of The Serpent (12A) The Nice Guys (15) Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Film, Ciro Guerra’s Embrace of the Serpent has been hailed as a masterpiece. It takes a breathtaking journey through the Colombian Amazon, following the interwoven stories of two European explorers; one in the early 1900s, the other 40 years later. SUB Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe make a perfect odd-couple in this hilarious, offbeat bromance. It’s by Shane Black, director of cult hit Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and employs a similarly louche wit. It’s almost absurdly entertaining, with Gosling and Crowe enjoying a surprising chemistry; and Crowe in particular revealing excellent comic timing. various w/Eng ST Fri 15 & Sun 17 Jul, times vary Sun 17 Jul, 7.45pm Poor Cow (15) Alice Through The Looking Glass (PG) Ken Loach’s first feature, a landmark in British social realism, is now available in a new digital restoration. This snapshot of ‘60s London stars Carol White as young mother Joy. Beautiful and resilient, she’s nevertheless struggling to cope while her husband (John Bindon) is in jail and clutching at happiness, she falls instead for his friend Dave (Terence Stamp). Enter Wonderland again with James Bobin’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, a spectacular new adventure sequel to Tim Burton’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland. Also Sat 16, Tues 19 & Thu 21 July, as family screenings. AD Gulbenkian Film / 5 Sat 16 & Sun 17 Jul, times vary Tue 19 Jul, 6.30pm Race (PG) Versus: The Life & Films Of Ken Loach (12A) A thrilling, timely biopic of Jesse Owens, the legendary AfricanAmerican athlete who triumphed at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, winning more medals than any other athlete and defying Hitler’s attempt to exploit the Games. Mon 18 & Wed 20 Jul, times vary Mon Roi (15) Versus is a humorous, provocative and revealing account of one of Britain’s most celebrated filmmakers, Ken Loach, as he looks back at over fifty years in cinema. Granted exclusive access, director Louise Osmond (Dark Horse) follows Loach on-set as he completes his final feature I, Daniel Blake and reviews the creative peaks, trials and tribulations of his career. Fri 22 & Mon 25 – Thu 28 Jul, times vary Me Before You (12A) Mon Roi is an intoxicating love story, following the tempestuous, ten-year romance between two 40-something Parisians. Filmed closely as they eat, talk, laugh, make love and argue it makes for an immensely memorable film; funny, charming and moving in equal measure. Emelia Clarke (Game of Thrones) plays Lou, whose cheery attitude is put to the test when she begins working as a carer for embittered, cynical Will (Claflin), a wealthy banker paralysed by an accident two years previous. SUB SUB French w/Eng ST AD Hard of Hearing subtitled screening Mon 25 Jul 6 / Gulbenkian Film Fri 22 & Mon 25 Jul, times vary Fri 29 – Sun 31 Jul, times vary Where To Invade Next Tale Of Tales (15) (15) Oscar-winning documentarian and political provocateur Michael Moore (Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling for Columbine) is back – just in time for US election season. Hailed as a return to form by critics, it’s an expansive and subversive comedy with Moore traversing the globe to find solutions to America’s problems in the workings of other countries. Inspired by seventeenth-century Neapolitan fairytales, Tale of Tales is a gorgeously grotesque triptych of fables that sees a king and queen (Reilly and Hayek), unable to conceive, seeking gruesome advice from a sorcerer; Toby Jones as a monarch nursing a pet flea until it grows alarmingly in size; and Vincent Cassel’s sex-obsessed leader being tricked into an undesirable tryst... Tue 26 – Thu 28 Jul, times vary Fri 29 Jul – Thu 4 Aug, times vary Elvis & Nixon (15) Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (TBC) In 1970, Elvis Presley pitched up at the White House and requested a meeting with then President Richard Nixon. What followed was surely one of the weirdest high-level meetings in American political and popcultural history. AD A hilarious feature-length riff on Jennifer Saunders’ best creation, the unfortunate PR ‘guru’ Edina Monsoon (Saunders) and her sycophantic former model pal Patsy (Joanna Lumley), still drinking, partying and drugging to excess.
