CYVASSE
Valar Morghulis! What follows is the rules guide to Braavosi Cyvasse, a version of the
board game inspired by George R.R. Martin’s saga A Song of Ice and Fire.
Set Up
Each player sets up his/her pieces on one half of the board, separated by a screen to hide the
opposing player’s pieces. Mountain and Fortress pieces do not move after set-up, and remain where
they are placed for the entire game. A player can choose to play with fewer than his/her 5 Mountains.
Most moving pieces have two faces; a player must choose which face of each piece he/she wants to
use during set-up. Pieces may not be turned over during a game.
Any moving piece may be placed on a Fortress piece. Only a Dragon may be placed on a Mountain.
Turn
A player’s turn consists of two phases: Movement and Capture.
A player may leave out any part of his/her turn, but may not move a piece after the Capture phase.
Movement
During the Movement phase, a player
may move one of his/her pieces up to
the maximum number of squares of
that piece’s movement range.
No piece may end their move on a
square occupied by another piece, and
only Dragons may move across squares
occupied by other pieces.
All pieces may move through, or end
their move on, a square occupied by a
Fortress piece.
Capture
During the Capture phase, a player may remove one of the
opposing pieces from the board in one of two ways.
Melee: A melee piece may capture an opposing piece of
equal or lower Power on an adjacent square. The attacking
piece must move onto the captured piece’s square.
Ranged: A ranged piece may capture an opposing piece
of equal or lower Power within its capture range. The attacking
piece does not move onto the captured piece’s square.
Capture Range and Mountains – Mountains count as an additional square
when calculating whether an opposing piece lies within a ranged piece’s
capture range. When capturing Dragons, this includes the Mountain a
Dragon may be standing on.
Only Dragons may move through, or
end their move on, a square occupied
by a Mountain piece.
Trebuchet Movement – The Trebuchet may
only move and capture in the direction it is
aimed in (indicated by the arrow on the
piece’s face). During its Movement phase, the
Trebuchet may only be aimed in a new direction once, though this can be done before or
after it is moved one square. It may also be
only aimed in a new direction during its
Movement phase, without moving a square.
This Trebuchet may capture the Rabble (4 squares away) but not
the Dragon (6 squares away).
This Catapult may capture the Dragon (2 squares away) or the Heavy
Horse (3 squares away), but not the Spearmen (4 squares away).
Flanking
Flanking allows a piece to capture opposing pieces of higher Power. Any friendly piece standing
adjacent to an opposing piece adds its Power to that of the attacking piece.
A Light Horse (Pwr1)
may capture an opposing
Heavy Horse (Pwr2), if
that Heavy Horse is
flanked by a Rabble
(Pwr1).
A Crossbow (Pwr1) may
capture an opposing King
(Pwr3), if that King is
flanked by a Rabble (Pwr1)
and a Spearmen (Pwr1).
Ranged pieces must also be adjacent to the opposing piece to flank it; pieces merely within the
capturing range do not count as being flanked.
These two Catapults (Pwr2) may not capture
the Elephant (Pwr3) through flanking.
These two Catapults (Pwr2) may capture
the Elephant (Pwr3) through flanking.
Skirmish Capture
If, at the beginning of the Movement phase, a melee piece is already standing adjacent to an opposing
piece it could capture, that piece may capture the opposing piece and move into its square in place of
carrying out a regular movement. The same piece may then also capture a second opposing piece
during the regular Capture phase.
Movement Phase (Skirmish) Capture Phase (regular)
An Elephant (Pwr3) may capture a Rabble in a
Fortress (Pwr2) during the Movement phase
with a skirmish capture, then go on to capture a
Trebuchet (Pwr3) during the regular Capture
phase.
Winning the Game
A player wins the game if he/she has captured all of the opponent’s pieces OR enough pieces that the
opponent is unable to capture any one of his/her pieces OR the opponent’s only remaining movable piece is
a lonely King.
Blue only has a Light Horse (Pwr1)
and a Rabble (Pwr1) remaining,
which are unable to capture Red’s
remaining Trebuchet (Pwr3).
Red wins the game.
Valar Dohaeris.
Variants
Mother’s Mercy
Dragons cannot capture or be captured during each player’s first turn.
Pentoshi Trader’s Opening
No screen is used during set-up. Instead, players take turns placing one piece at a time.
Gift of the Many-Faced God
During the Movement phase, a player may choose to turn a piece over to its other face in
place of moving it.
New Banners
When a King is captured, the capturing player may EITHER remove any additional piece
from the board in the same turn OR gain control of two of the opponent’s lowest power
pieces.
White Walker’s Cyvasse
When a King is captured, the capturing player may EITHER remove any additional piece
from the board in the same turn OR return one of his/her own previously captured pieces
to a square on his/her side of the board.
