June 2012 - Chapter 585
Watervliet 40C June 2012 Chapter 585 Meeting Wednesday, June13, 2012, 7:00 p.m. at the Chapter Clubhouse, Watervliet Airport Board of Directors Meeting Date & Time to be announced PRESIDENT’S CORNER Greetings, If any of our members have some free time on the weekend of June 8-9-10 we would appreciate some help the Boy Scout weekend. Saturday the 9th will be the busy day. Make sure to stay for the dinner at 6:00 pm on Saturday. The other day I received a call from my nephew in Arizona. He flies a 172 out of Deer Valley Airport North of Phoenix. It is the busiest general aviation airport in the world with over 400,000 operations annually. The number two airport is Van Nuys California with about 360,000. They have three flight schools with students from all over the world. As he was approaching to land, the elevator jammed. He called the tower and advised them of his situation but didn't declare an emergency. They instructed him to use the longest runway and cleared the airspace of all the other traffic. That was a major job since there are well over a thousand take-off and landings every day at Deer Valley with a half dozen General Aviation airports, two major commercial airports and Luke Air Force Base all within about fifteen miles. You can imagine the number of planes in the air. As the elevator was jammed, the trim tab was of little use, so he had to land only by use of the throttle. One interesting note was the memory of an article by Barry Schiff in one of the aviation magazines written years ago about this same situation, He said it came back so clear it was like he just read it. Clean-up day at 40C, the guys had been at it since 8am so Sharon brought hotdogs and drinks to make sure they had enough energy to get the job done. He made a good landing and was congratulated by the tower. Everything turned out well except now he has another problem. Some time between landing and taxiing back to the hangar, whatever was jammed became unjammed. The mechanics took everything apart and examined it, but at the time I talked to him they still had not found the culprit. KEEP LOOKING!! Don Last minute pre-flight, everything is okay and set to go. Jake and the BD5 are flying again in the Hartford Strawberry Festival Parade, June 9th at 1 p.m. Editors Note…..Deadline for articles and information for the July 2012 Newsletter will be Friday June 29th. 1 Chapter 585 Meeting Minutes May 9, 2012 Submitted by Dovie Downey for Bill Greenley, Secretary President Don Carney called meeting called to order at 7:05pm. The little boy (who had been looking out the window of the airplane) turned to his mother and asked, "If big dogs have baby dogs, and big cats have baby cats, why don't big airplanes have baby airplanes?" The mother (who couldn't think of an answer) told her son to ask the flight attendant, so the boy went down the aisle and asked the flight attendant. The flight attendant, who was very busy at the time, smiled and said,"I saw you talking with your Mom. Did your Mom tell you to ask me?"The boy said, "Yes, she did." "Well, then, you go and tell your mother that there are no baby airplanes because Southwest always pulls out on time. Have your Mom explain that to you."
