ReelBean 4
ReelBean is a full-featured movie converter, player and editor application for Mac OS X. The
latest release, ReelBean 4, runs on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and the download package also includes a previous version that runs on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. Many of the features of the application are available when the application runs in demo mode. Purchase of a license for $15 from
http://www.js8media.com/store enables all the pro features of the application, such as exporting, track extraction and manipulation, and others.
Formats
ReelBean can play any of the video and audio formats supported by the Mac, and supports use
of third party plugins that make proprietary formats available too. These include all of the following formats, and many more: 3GPP, 3GPP2, AIFF, AU, AVI, DV, FLC, MPEG-1 Muxed, MP3,
M4A, iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, Quartz Compositions, QuickTime (H.264/AAC), WAV, WMV
(with plugin component), FLV & DivX (with free Perian component installed.)

System Requirements
• Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (for ReelBean 2.99, in the Tiger folder of the download installation package.)
• Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (for ReelBean 4, in the Leopard folder of the download installation
package.)
Installing
The ReelBean software is distributed as an Internet-enabled disk image, i.e. in the file called
ReelBean.dmg which can be downloaded to your desktop by clicking on the Download button
on the http://www.js8media.com/reelbean web page. When downloading it using the Safari
web browser the disk image will be automatically mounted in a Finder window, displaying the
following files:
• Leopard folder, containing the ReelBean application file for Mac OS X 10.5
• Tiger folder, containing the ReelBean application file for Mac OS X 10.4
• ReadMe text file containing release note information.
• ReelBean user guide document (this file).
Simply drag the ReelBean application to your hard disk drive (normally the /Applications
folder) to complete the installation.

Upgrading from ReelBean to ReelBean Pro
After installing ReelBean you will be able to perform all of the operations listed under the ReelBean column of the table on page 2. Upgrading to ReelBean Pro (a license costs $15) allows access to all of the additional features listed in the ReelBean Pro column of the table. These include such features as exporting to all of the formats shown in the ReelBean export drawer, as
shown below, displayed by clicking on the red button at the bottom of the main player window.

You can upgrade to ReelBean Pro by either of the following methods:
• Selecting the “Buy ReelBean Pro...” item from the ReelBean application menu.
• Visit the http://www.js8media.com/store page
When you click on the Buy Now at either the JS8 Media store page or on the ReelBean web page
you will be taken to the PayPel web site where you can choose to confirm your purchase option.
If you do so an email will be sent to you containing your ReelBean Pro license code. Open
ReelBean’s registration panel by selecting the “Registration...” option from the ReelBean menu.
After you’ve entered your license code you should see the message indicating ReelBean Pro is
activated, and all the export features will now be accessible. You will also see in the About
panel that you are now running ReelBean Pro.

Checking for updates
You can manually check for an updated version of ReelBean by selecting the Check for Software
Update item from the ReelBean menu. If you would like ReelBean to automatically check for a
new version when you start the application you can set the Software Update preference. No
personal information or data from your computer is sent when the check is made.
Removing ReelBean
To remove ReelBean software from your computer simply drag the ReelBean application file to
the trash folder.

Playing Video with ReelBean
All of the normal features you would expect of video playing software are available in ReelBean, plus many that are only available in pro versions of many other apps.

Exporting Video and Audio to different formats
The red button at the bottom of the main player window opens a drawer containing a list of the
conversion formats available using ReelBean. The export button at the bottom of the drawer
will be enabled if you are running ReelBean Pro. Simply select the required format and click on
the export button, or double-click the format and the conversion will proceed. Various formats
display an extra dialog window to allow you to fine tune the details of the conversion. The exported file will be place on your desktop.

Scene Selection
From the Window menu you can choose the Scene Selection feature. This will create a drawer
with scenes from the video, to ease navigation. Double-clicking on a scene causes the player to
jump to that scene in the video.

Chapters
QuickTime movies can contain what is known as a chapter track. Applications such as
MovieChapterizer allow you to add chapter names to parts of the movie you choose. When
ReelBean opens a file that contains chapter markers it will display an extra window that allows
to jump directly to any of the named chapters.

Track Extraction
If you don’t want to export the whole movie, but instead want the video, or just the audio, or
maybe just one audio track (videos can often contain multiple video and audio tracks) you can
use the Extract Movie Tracks item from ReelBean’s Window menu.
