In order to provide you with the best care, please read the following instructions carefully and follow it precisely. FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY RESULT IN CANCELLATION OF YOUR PROCEDURE BECAUSE OF SAFETY ISSUES. Before the Procedure What medications can I take? Blood pressure meds, diabetic meds, asthma meds and other meds that are necessary for your health. These meds can be taken in the morning of your procedure with a sip of water. Please bring your blood pressure medication with you. If you are diabetic please check your sugar level in the morning of the injection day, (ideally should be less than 140). We encourage you to take your prescription pain medication that we prescribe to you with a sip of water the day of your procedure unless told otherwise. What I have to do before the injection! • If you are taking Coumadin you will be instructed to go to the lab the morning of your procedure to have INR/PT stat blood work in order to minimize any chance of bleeding; (ideal INR level is 1.2-1.5, anything above that is considered risky to perform the injection). • Patients have to shower or bathe prior to procedure to avoid increased risk of infection. • Remove all jewelry (including belly-button rings). • You can eat a light meal 4 hours before the injection providing you will not be sedated, especially if you are a diabetic patient. • If you are having a Discogram or having conscious sedation you may not have anything to eat or drink 6 hours prior to injection. • If you are scheduled for a Discogram, you need to bring the MRI film. The procedure may need to be rescheduled if the films are not available. Medication to be stopped 7 days prior to the injections (unless otherwise indicated): Aspirin or Aspirin products, such as: Diflunisal, Dolobid, Salsalate, Ecotrin, Bayer, Anacin, Excedrin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Advil, Ketoprofen, Naprosyn (Naproxen, Aleve), Relafen, Fish Oil and Vitamin E. You also need to stop taking Garlic as a supplement and in your diet. Garlic is a blood thinner. This is in order to decrease the chance of bleeding during and after any injections or procedures that we do. What will happen at the time of your procedure? • You will meet the staff who will be assisting the Doctor during the procedure. • You will be asked to sign a consent form for the procedure. • Depending on the procedure, an IV may be started in your arm. Depending on your procedure you may receive antibiotics or medicine that will make you sleepy. Should you have any reason that prevents you from attending your appointment, please call the clinic 48 hours before if possible, so we may accommodate another patient who is waiting to have an urgent procedure. If you are on the following blood thinners, please contact your physician for clearance to stop the medication: Coumadin, Plavix, Heparin, Arthrotec, Voltaren, Lodine, Indocin, Toradol, Anaprox, Daypro, Tolmetin, Clinoril, Pletal, and Trental. After the procedure • • • • You will be observed for 30 minutes to one hour to observe your response to the treatment. For your safety and the safety of others you will not be allowed to drive home. If you do not have a driver your procedure will be cancelled. You may experience some initial increase in your symptoms after the procedure, this is not uncommon. You should begin to notice improvement within 3-5 days. These improvements may be gradual. You have to go home and rest for the remainder of the day and may return to regular activities gradually the next day. Many people experience some increase in their symptoms for a day or two, but the pain should begin to improve by day 3-5. Improvement varies from person to person; your improvement may be gradual. Thank you for you cooperation.
