Publication No. 11 29th June 2016 Motto - Expect the Best School Vision - Students are empowered to achieve as confident responsible life-long learners Tena koutou katoa Special Urgent Request. This Saturday the Helensville Historical Society will be running their celebration day in our school Hall. They have contacted the school asking if we could assist with some volunteers, who would donate 1/2hr of their time – either at 11.00am or 12.30pm – to help run the kitchen (refilling tea pots and heating food if necessary). Kerry and Rachel have already offered, so if you can too, please let Kerry know as soon as possible. ______________________________________________ Extremely Jealous Principal. I know right now as I am writing this newsletter, Room 5 are listening (via Live Streaming) to both Richie McCaw and Sir John Walker – as part of their ISport Foundation Leadership Day. ______________________________________________ Sir Peter Blake Trust and Room 5 Our Leadership Week kicks off this Friday, with ‘digital’ Dream Team sessions featuring Keven Mealamu, Dai Henwood and Dr. Michelle Dickinson (aka. Nanogirl), we’re really excited hearing them. The theme for 2016 is #believeyoucan, which is taken directly from Sir Peter’s last voyage when he wrote, ‘To win, you have to believe you can do it’. ______________________________________________ Electives These are in the final stages of organization – costs and choices will be out to you soon. Remember your child will be asked to select their three favourite choices. The activities will range in both cost and enjoyment areas. ______________________________________________ Yeh! – Shade Sail for the Playground Equipment. We have been very lucky to secure 50% of the funding necessary to have the shade sails installed, from Trillion Trust. The contractors have been engaged, with an expected start time 5 weeks from now. ______________________________________________ Anti-slip mats. A big thanks to Andy Stonelake. Anti slip mats have been installed on the ramps outside Rooms 1,2. ______________________________________________ Assembly Last week of School. This assembly is going to be a big one – with Guitar performances / Wearable Arts Show / and if they can get away from work, a farewell to leaving Board Members. To help us get through all this before home time, we will be starting the assembly at 1pm. If you are able we encourage you to come along and watch the students model their costumes, marvel at their creativity and farewell some hard workers. _____________________________________________ Senior School Reports. Years 4 to 8 Interim reports will be coming home on Friday next week. These reports are designed to reflect how your child is lining up to achieve the National Standard at the end of the year. Please remember this is an estimation of progress, as the National Standards are a criterion based measurement tool. In some cases classes may not have covered some of the years content yet. _____________________________________________ Fundraising Meeting Thursday 30th (tomorrow) 8.45am – All welcome. _____________________________________________ Rippa Rugby Yr 7/8 Girls – next Wednesday _____________________________________________ Busy Term 3 Over previous newsletters, you would have read mention of 2016 being a year where school starts consulting with the Community, in order for us to start reviewing and constructing our strategic direction for 2017 onwards. Now that the new BOT is in place this consultation can now start. We will be asking Parents, Students and Teachers, what we have done well? What we need to change? And what we believe the future of education will look like and how we cater for change here at Waitoki? One of my jobs over the holiday period is to construct these response surveys – but the reality is they will only be of use if we get your ideas. Once they have been received, the Board and I will begin collating responses, and establishing the common voice of the community, which will guide the construction of the strategic plan. _____________________________________________ Conservation Conservation has been the school’s theme this term and one aspect we’ve been looking at is recycling and how much waste goes into landfills. You will notice we now have our worm farm up and running for food scraps, and an extra recycling bin for soft plastics of which we have many each day, chip packets, snack bars, plastic bags, glad wrap etc etc. We are learning to recycle everything we can! ______________________________________________ Lost Property Please don’t forget to have a look through the lost property, you’ll be surprised what you can find!! Anything left at the end of term will be donated to the local hospice shop. _____________________________________________ Ag day animals If your child is looking for a baby goat to rear for Ag day, here are some details we’ve received of goats due to be born very soon!!
