Kishin Daiko is a multi-ethnic, multi-generational
taiko group that exemplifies harmony with
diversity in their membership makeup and the
music they play. Kishin Daiko’s music consists
of traditional and adaptations of traditional
Japanese taiko pieces, along with original
compositions by contemporary musicians and
Kishin members.
Most of the various sized drums
used by Kishin are handmade
by the group members. The
time-consuming process of
making and maintaining their
own drums helps members
better understand and gain
respect for the instrument and its sound.
Various melodic wind instruments such as the
fue (bamboo flute played horizontally) and the
shakuhachi (bamboo flute played vertically)
are also incorporated to
complete Kishin Daiko’s
original ethnic sounds.
Kishin Daiko devotes itself
to sharing Japanese
culture and promoting
community harmony
through the group’s
uniquely engaging and
diverse expression of taiko
music. We invite you to

HISTORY
Kishin Daiko, formerly West Covina Taiko,
was established at the East San Gabriel Valley
Japanese Community Center in 1981. With
help from the late taiko craftsman, Stan
Morgan, a handful of members and their
families built Kishin’s first set of drums from
old wine barrels.
The Japanese characters for Kishin mean
“energy, spirit, and heart.” Renowned
musician Masakazu Yoshizawa took Kishin
Daiko under his wing and taught taiko
fundamentals and how to play other
traditional Japanese instruments.
Today, with over 30 active members,
Kishin Daiko performs at various school
functions, corporate events and cultural
festivals while also providing classes and
workshops for all ages and experience levels.
Their performance highlights include the
2016 Special Olympics Torch Run in West
Covina and the LA Clippers’ Japanese
American Community Night at Staples
Center in Downtown Los Angeles.

2016 marks Kishin Daiko’s 35th anniversary. In
celebration of this milestone, we are holding a
concert to share over three decades of music
with the community, our supporters and the
general public.
