Dear Members of The Moravian Historical Society,
Welcome to the 155th Annual Meeting, Lecture, and Reception. We trust you will enjoy an afternoon
steeped in history. For the 155th time, we gather to celebrate our successes, present solutions for our

Minutes of the 154th Annual Meeting, Lecture, and Reception
Sunday, October 16, 2011 - Lititz Moravian Church, Lititz, PA
The 154th Annual Meeting of the Moravian Historical Society was called to order at 2:35 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the Lititz Moravian Church, Lititz Pennsylvania by the President, Brother Stephen E. Cunningham. A welcome and prayer was offered by Rev. Mark Breland.
During the President’s Message, Brother Cunningham thanked the Lititz Congregation for their hospitality during the Society’s time at their Church. He then introduced Board members who were present for
the meeting—Mollie Santee, Barbara Dietterich, Jeffrey Long, Conrad Bowers, Traci Stocker, Sandra Gaspar, and Carol Messina. He mentioned how to the best of his knowledge, this was the first time the meeting was held outside the Lehigh Valley, and the purpose of the move was to show that the Historical Society was for all Moravians.
2.2012 Little Dolls: A Little Tea
Brother Cunningham announced that the John Valentine Haidt painting “Adoration of the Shepherds”
will be returning to the Whitefield house after an extensive restoration project.
He then thanked Sister Mollie Santee, Treasurer, for once again presenting a balanced budget to the
membership, and Kelly Givens, Business Manager, for all of her hard work and dedication during the
past year. A thank you was also offered to Moravian Manor for a donation of prints to the Society. A final
thanks was given to all of the Board members, docents, and volunteers who give their time and talents to
the Society.
Sister Traci Stocker, acting Secretary of the Society, presented the Secretaries Report, which can be
found on pages 2-4 of the Annual Report. Sister Stocker read the list of names of the New Member Proposals:

Note from event sponsor: Embassy Bank for the Lehigh Valley
Some of my fondest memories are those of my childhood and
growing up in Nazareth. Summers were a special time there.
Every weekend I would make the trek from East Lawn Gardens
to the Nazareth Library. My friends and I would meet there for
our sandlot baseball games. Friendships and lasting memories
were created during those summers.
On my way to the baseball games, I would always admire the Whitefield House and the grounds that
surrounded it. In sixth grade, my classmates and I were taken on a tour of Whitefield House. Always
fascinated by history, the tour ignited more interest in the building and the rich legacy it contained. It
was much later in life that I learned about the wonderful, and dedicated volunteers that work tirelessly
to continue the rich tradition that Whitefield House provides to Nazareth and the surrounding areas.
Our community is richer for having this treasure in our backyard and I hope that everyone takes
the opportunity to learn, explore and be inspired by the traditions that are held here.

Brother Cunningham called for members to approve the Secretary’s minutes, which passed unanimously.
The Treasurer’s Report, found on pages 8-10 of the report, was presented by Sister Santee. It was noted
that the numbers from last year are only a 9 month year as a Fiscal year change for 2011 was adopted by
the Board of Managers at the August, 2010 meeting. The Fiscal year now runs July 1 – June 30.
Sister Santee told the membership that a voucher system has been instituted to better control expenses.
She also informed the membership that several bequests have been given to the society recently, but the
money is restricted. The investment committee has chosen an investment vehicle that has been doing
well to date. Also, the Society received a $20,000 grant for the coming year from Northampton County for
docent expenses and operating expenses.
Brother Cunningham made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report, which passed unanimously.
A call went out to any Committee Chair to speak if he/she had any additions or corrections to the reports
presented in the Report on pages 12-16. None wished to speak.
The Report of the Nominating Committee, which can be found on page 11 of the Annual Report, was presented by Brother Cunningham.
Officers being brought forth for nomination are as follows:
Brother Stephen Cunningham, President
Sister Dr. Linda Shay Gardner, Vice-President
Sister Mollie Santee, Treasurer
Sister Traci Stocker, Secretary
Library and Museum Committee member nomination is as follows:
Brother Joshua Fink
Brother Cunningham called for nominations from the floor; none were presented. He then presented a
motion to close nominations and to accept the report of the Nominating Committee as written. The motion passed unanimously.
Brother Cunningham expressed thanks to those who had attended the meeting and opened the floor to
remarks; none were presented. Brother Cunningham made a motion to adjourn the meeting and the motion was passed unanimously. Sister Stocker noted that there were approximately 48 people in attendance at the Meeting.
Following the Annual Meeting, Rev. Dr. Riddick Weber from Moravian Theological Seminary presented a
lecture on “’European Eyesing’ 18th Century North American Moravians: Problems with Applying European Understandings to North American Experience" There were approximately 56 people in attendance.
Respectfully submitted,

President of the Board of Managers Report
Greetings Members of the Moravian Historical Society,
Dear Members of the Moravian Historical Society,
The Publications Committee is comprised of Craig Atwood (chair), Traci Stocker (secretary), Otto
Dreydoppel, Paul Peucker, Tiffany Fisk-Watts, and Megan van Ravenswaay (ex-officio).
The most important news is that our new website was launched, with the help of Heather Reinert. The
new website has a beautiful design which continues the committee’s efforts to create a contiguous aesthetic brand for the Society. It is easier for users to navigate and staff to update than the previous site.
Dr. Scott Gordon of Lehigh University was selected to present the annual lecture in 2012. Dr. Gordon is a
popular lecturer who is well known for his research on the Moravians in Pennsylvania during the 18 th
century. Thanks to our site director, we reduced the production costs of our publications and found donors willing to assist in funding.
The Journal of Moravian History is now being published by Penn State University Press, and the subscription rate for the Journal has been reduced to $30 per year. Paul Peucker continues to serve as the
editor, and he reports that the new procedures established by Penn State have facilitated the editorial
process. The Journal continues to receive high-quality submissions representing several academic disciplines. Penn State makes the Journal available on-line through academic libraries and has digitalized all
of the past Transactions of the Moravian Historical Society as well.
During 2012, the committee lost one member through resignation and another through inactivity. The
committee has invited Dr. Robert Smith of Northampton Community College and Jane Burcaw of Moravian Theological Seminary to join the committee, pending approval of the Society. In the coming year the
committee plans to expand the offerings of the website, review the design of all publications of the society, including brochures, will start producing a regular newsletter for members, and continue to expand
the Society’s presence through social media.

It is bittersweet to write my final address for the annual meeting. I have served as board member for eight
years, with the final three as President. I am pleased to speak on the past year, as I am extremely proud
of my final year in office.
The past year was one of transition. The Society took time to reflect on our current status and future
goals. In doing so, we found an ally in the Moravian Archives, Bethlehem, Pa. With similar missions,
volunteers, and members, we have chosen to affiliate, in order to share staff and resources. Both
organizations have agreed to move into the affiliation in phases. Phase One went extremely smoothly,
thus Phase Two was entered and has also been extremely successful.
In my 8 years at MHS, I have worked to ensure the history of the Moravian Church will be protected and
shared. I look forward to attending events as a guest, serving when called as a volunteer, and continuing
to spread the word of the treasures held at Moravian Historical Society.
Sincerely Yours,
Stephen E. Cunningham

Whitefield House Site Director Report
Dear Friends,
Thank you to the Moravian Historical Society board, staff, volunteers, and members for the warm welcome I received upon accepting the Director position in January. I am very pleased to share highlights
and challenges from the past year along with goals for the future with you.
Community outreach is one of my top priorities. I am eager to share that the Historical Society is an
active and eager leader for entertaining and educational experiences for adults, youth, and families from
all walks of life. To do so, I have connected with countless businesses, business leaders, non profits and
service clubs to spread awareness and make friends. I have provided “behind the scenes” tours to many
people who were simply astonished by the beautiful property and the phenomenal collection at the
Whitefield House, some in turn have become members and project sponsors, including this afternoon’s
sponsor: Embassy Bank for the Lehigh Valley. I, and other staff and volunteers, have attended several
special activities off site to speak with the general public, to spread the word about the Society, and to
collect contact information to widen our audience. I am thrilled to be a part of the launch of our new
website, our active Facebook fanpage, and working towards a paper newsletter for members. Moravian
Historical Society is a treasure in the Valley and I strive for the day that awareness of our importance is
reflected through our membership, event attendance, and museum visitation statistics.

The Moravian Historical Society
155th Annual Meeting, Lecture, and Reception
155 years of active collecting has brought together a phenomenal museum collection which exemplifies
the fact that Moravian history is also American history. One challenge that we hit this year was the
discovery of Dermestid beetles in the mission collection storage space and exhibition. This beetle loves
protein, thus fur, wool, and leather objects are especially attractive to them. We are using the process of
freezing and thawing to kill the beetles and implementing monitoring procedures to prevent further infestations of this and any other type of museum pest. We are taking advantage of this challenge by recataloguing each affected object. We are noting where every item is stored, what condition it is in, and
photographing it. We will upload these details into our database to expedite future access to the collection. Re-cataloguing also provides another exciting benefit: we are rediscovering objects that have been in
deep storage for years. In fact, in August we found a very unusual and rare personal Lot system utilized
by Bishop Loskiel who lived in Bethlehem in the early 1800’s.
Many thanks are due to the members of this committee who have worked diligently and purposefully this
year to plan and mount an exhibit, as well as to process, preserve, and safeguard many precious artifacts
which have been entrusted to our Society.
Another area that I feel strongly about is public programming, especially for youth. I am very concerned
about ensuring that Moravian Historical Society has the dedication and talents of the next generation of
guests, board members, members, donors, and volunteers. To do so, I am actively working to renewing
our relationship with the Nazareth Area School District, which has included a presentation before the
school board, providing programs/activities for teacher use, and meetings with administrators. Most notably, in mid-October, I will host a two hour meeting of all Nazareth Area School District K – 12 art department teachers, highlighting how they may utilize us to help teach their subjects. Once the schools
begin to use us as an educational resource, we may apply to the State to become Education Improved Tax
Credit (EITC) qualified, opening another door to allow corporate support of our educational mission.
Another exciting growth opportunity is the Whitefield House Bookshop. Nazareth does not have a unique
store which features a wide variety of local and Moravian history books, handmade gifts by area artists,
and hard to find items. For the first time ever, the store will feature Moravian stars shipped directly to us
from Herrnhut, Germany, original artwork from a local artist of colonial Pennsylvania Moravian
descent, and pottery handmade by a Moravian pottery scholar in North Carolina. We will become the
location to find that perfect gift for the friend who has everything. We will work towards converting the
shoppers into donors, members, museum guests, and volunteers.
A goal on the horizon is to take a fresh look at the needs of the Gray Cottage. The building has received
extensive preservation/restoration efforts over the past decades; however, the structure is showing water
damage and roof failure. We are working to secure costs of the needed repairs and considering the best
fundraising efforts in our current economy. We will keep you as members abreast of all decisions as we
will need your support to help preserve this significant structure.
Again, these are just a few highlights and goals. I thank everyone for the warm welcome to the Moravian
Historical Society. I am very proud to be a part of the history of the organization and I look forward to
many successful years.
Respectfully,
Megan van Ravenswaay

Maintenance & Grounds Committee Report
Brother Lou Dishong serves as committee Chair while Brother Jeffrey Long functions as Board of
Managers Liaison to the Maintenance and Grounds (M&G) Committee. Dedicated committee members
include: Brother Conrad Bowers, Brother Chris Carson, Brother John Egerton and Brother John Stocker.
Whitefield House Site Director Sister Megan van Ravenswaay and Business Manager Sister Kelly Givens
work directly with the committee to address various issues associated with the Whitefield House, Gray
Cottage, Ephrata Tract and rental properties. M&G holds regular 5:30 p.m. meetings at the Whitefield
House on the fourth Thursday of each month.
Grant monies from the ‘Larger Life Foundation of the Moravian Church, Northern Province’ and the
United Brethren Congregation were matched with dedicated funds bequeathed to MHS for completing
much needed masonry and roof repairs to the Whitefield House. Funded in-part by C.F. Martin Co., Inc.,
M&G also coordinated installation of a replacement brick sidewalk leading from the parking area to the
main and side entrance porches of the Whitefield House. Completion of the new sidewalk and extensive
renovations to the main entrance porch were celebrated with an official ribbon cutting ceremony
coordinated by MHS staff on August 23rd.
In addition to the removal of two dead trees and a bee hive nest (honey bees) from the Ephrata Tract
M&G cooperated with MHS staff during warm weather months to manage volunteer groups for regular
property maintenance. M&G also cooperated with MHS staff and L&M Committee to bag and seal
collections boxes, in response to pest infestation of collections items.
In response to concerns expressed by the current insurance carrier, M&G has initiated an evaluation of
various MHS properties … specifically concerning the condition of the Gray Cottage roof, log walls and
heating system.
Maintenance requests by MHS tenants are continually being addressed. A new tenant was welcomed into
the Bell Cottage in early May while efforts to find a new tenant for the upstairs Jordan House unit (empty
since June 1st) are on-going.
In September, Brother Lou Dishong resigned from the committee. Brother John Stocker was warmly welcomed as the new committee chair.

Library & Museum Committee Report
The Library & Museum Committee met regularly throughout the year. Newly-acquired artifacts, books,
and ephemera were presented and voted upon for accession, decisions were made concerning loan requests, exhibits and programs, and many work sessions where the committee worked hands-on with objects new to our collections or sorted, processed and stored items that had accumulated and needed committee attention. Barbara Dietterich, Traci Stocker, Jane Marshall, Erika Still, Jack Hommer, Anne Howlett, and Emma Williams comprise the committee. Amy Frey joined the group in early 2012.
In the absence of a staff liaison for the committee from June 2011 to January 2012, plans for future exhibits were modified. The committee created the 2011 Christmas exhibit. The theme was “Scenes of a
Moravian Christmas” with two displays from the Trein Putz, the large Advent star hung in the Saal, two
putz-in-a-box dioramas loaned to us by Rev. Roy Ledbetter, a collection of children’s Christmas books
with a manipulative children’s putz, as well as small displays of the Moravian lovefeast, beeswax candles,
and the Christmas Eve lovefeast.
On December 4, 2011, the Library & Museum Committee coordinated and hosted a special Christmas reception to welcome back the restored Haidt painting, Adoration of the Shepherds. The conservator, Aella
Diamontopolous, explained the restoration process. The Whitfield Chapter of the Questers International,
helped to fund the project with a grant, were special guests at the reception.
The Civil War exhibit has remained. The MHS again participated in the joint venture and Civil War concert with the Nazareth Rotary Club in March and the Civil War exhibit was the focus of their visit.
After entering into the affiliation with the Moravian Archives, Dr. Peucker met with the committee in December to discuss the committee’s activities and procedures. He was again present with us in January
when our new Site Director, Ms. Megan van Ravenswaay, was introduced to the group.
During the months of January and February, B. Dietterich and C. Messina spent several days sorting
and identifying over 400 items that need to be either processed into the collection or considered for accessioning into it. B. Dietterich created databases for each category. The committee has since accessioned
many of these items into the collection and has met monthly for work sessions to continue sorting, recording, boxing and storing the assortment of processed and unprocessed items in both the Curator’s
and the Director’s Offices. These work sessions will continue until all items have been properly dealt with.
In February as dolls were being unboxed for exhibit at the Little Girls’ Tea, it was discovered that there
was a bug infestation in the third floor Missions Room. After consultation with an expert, procedures
were determined to contain, eradicate, and clean these carpet beetles from the affected items. The committee, with the assistance of the Maintenance and Grounds Committee, bagged and sealed all boxes in
the Missions Room as the first step in the eradication process. Supplies were purchased to continue the
prescribed treatment. The cleaning procedure continues, with committee members being trained on proper cleaning and storing procedures.

Dear Members and Friends,
The Moravian Historical Society by-laws require a minimum of fourteen volunteers to serve as the Board
of Managers. There must be at least four officers (president, at least one vice president, secretary, and
treasurer). Six out of the fourteen board members must be members of the Moravian Church.
The by-laws also require that new volunteers added to the Library and Museum, Historic Sites and
Monuments, and Publications Committees are voted on by the membership.
Darrell Crook and I served as the 2012 Nominating Committee, both as co-chairs. We were tasked with
the responsibility of replacing two officer positions and adding two new board members. The committee
generated a list of potential new members to join the Board of Managers. Potential new board members
were contacted regarding their willingness to serve. Present officers were also contacted to ask to continue in their position. Present board members were contacted regarding their willingness to serve as an officer.
