Bruce’s Babblings
Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The fall programming season is in full swing. We have celebrated “Welcome Back to Worship”
weekend, the choir has been rehearsing for a while now, Sunday School is up and running, and
discipleship classes have begun. It is wonderful to see all of the activity in and surrounding our
building.
I have noticed a couple of things in terms of communication with the church recently. I have
been made aware of individuals who had been hospitalized several days after they had already
returned home. Now, in some cases that hospitalization is just for day surgery and I have had folks
tell me that I don’t need to come and see them just for one day. But in other cases, there have been
folks hospitalized for a few days and I had no idea that they were hospitalized. I would have visited
them had I known they were there.
So, can I ask a favor? If you know of one of the members or friends of our congregation who
is in the hospital or will be going in for surgery, could you let me or the church office know? I
would rather have 10 people tell me rather than everyone assume that someone else has not told me.
Thank you in advance for your help in this.
The second thing I noticed is actually something that myself as well as many of the members of
the Board of Elders have noticed. When the Elders made phone calls to all of our local members inviting them to “Welcome Back to Worship” weekend, many of the Elders encountered disconnected
numbers in trying to reach out to members. We used the most recent congregational directory
which had been printed at the end of July of this year. In spite of that, we were not able to connect
with several people.
If you have recently switched phone numbers, or perhaps have given up your land line at home,
could you call the church and give us the most current number so that we may be able to contact
you in the future? Thank you in advance for your help in both of these endeavors.

Annual Pig Roast
Our annual pig roast will
take place on Saturday, October 10, with serving from 3:30
p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Menu items
will include a pork sandwich dinner for $9.00,
hot dog dinner for $4.00, and ice cream sundaes
for $3.00.
Once again entertainment will be provided
by David Drake, a Wisconsin troubadour who
believes that we need to gather family and friends
and take time to share a tune. Folk music has
always had deep roots in faith and gives voice
to the joy of life for all generations. If you’ve
missed him in the past, you won’t want to miss
him again!
Elections Only
Church Council
We will have an elections-only Church
Council meeting on Sunday, November 15. The
purpose of this meeting is to elect two Trustees,
two Elders, and one member of the Christian
Education Committee. Please plan to join us for
this very important meeting as we elect some of
our future leaders.
Upcoming Sermon Series
Pastor Bruce will be doing a sermon series
from the weekend of October 10 & 11 until October 31 & November 1. The title of the series is
“Building Bridges.” The weekly themes will be:

The Bridge of Sacrificial Giving
At these services we look forward to anthems
by our choir on Sundays, dramas as a part of the
worship on both Saturday and Sunday, hymns or
songs, prayers, and a message from Pastor Bruce.
The series will culminate on October 31
and November 1 as we celebrate Consecration
Sunday. On this weekend we will be asked to
turn in our faith promise or estimate of giving
cards. These are very important as we use them
to craft a budget for the following year. We
hope you can join us for this series as we seek
to build bridges!

TIME!!

18 for a sticky fun time!! It’s our annual Caramel
Bee again!! We will work on Saturday from 9
a.m. to around 2:30-3ish. On Sunday, we will
work following 10 a.m. worship until 2-3ish.

need for this. Also, please bring a non-stick

Czech Brethren &
Moravian Fellowship
As denominational family trees go, we are
connected to the Czech Brethren by John Hus. On
Sunday, October 11, at 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Mills
Moravian Church you will have the opportunity
to hear more about how we are connected in the
past and how we may be connected today. You
will hear a presentation by John Duss, who is
the Executive Director of the Evangelical Church
of Czech Brethren, about who they are and their
ministries. Their work goes around the world in
missions working on relief and development. The
ECCB began ministry in Milwaukee about three
years ago. Come and hear more about how we
might serve our Lord together. You can check

Shelter for
The Homeless
On Tuesday, October 13, our
church will have another opportunity to serve the guests at the
Men’s Homeless Shelter in Madison. Please
take a look at the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board near Fellowship Hall. Providing the
meal is possible when everyone takes a part in
the collecting of food stuffs, making the meal,
delivering and serving the meal.
Please have your food donations in the
church kitchen on Sunday, October 11.

We had a FANTASTIC RALLY DAY on September 13 as we enjoyed
a great breakfast and enjoyed fellowship time after registration. Then
at the 10:00 worship service, the Sunday School staff was installed and
the children sang a favorite song. Bibles were presented the following
Sunday to Parker Blomgren, Aaron Dehnert, Brock Levake, Haley
Walters and Tera Walters. This year we are studying a new curriculum.
During the month of October, the children will be working on our project to sell on October 24 at the
church Market Day. The Sunday School Moravian Market will once again be available periodically
throughout the year. The children will earn their “Moravian dollars” during our Sunday School hour
and for attending worship services to “purchase” items from the Moravian Market.
As a “heads-up,” during the month of November we will begin practices for our annual Christmas
program to be held on December 19, 2015, during our regularly scheduled worship service at 6:00
p.m. More information will be shared in the November Messenger.
We are looking forward to another awesome year! Each Sunday morning begins at 8:45 a.m.
in the Sanctuary unless otherwise noted and concludes at 9:45 a.m. Please pick up your child
at his/her classroom at that time. If you haven’t had the opportunity to register your child(ren) for
this Sunday School year, or have any questions or concerns regarding registration, please contact
Sue Trumpf. She will be available most Sundays, or you may call her at 920-723-9386. God’s
blessings to everyone as we enter into another school year.
Discipleship News
Book Club
The discipleship program has begun for
this year. We have had our parent and student
meeting and have already had our first class. This
year we will have somewhere between 13 and 15
students. Please hold our discipleship program
and the students in your prayers as they learn
and grow together.
This month the book club will be
held on Thursday, October 8, at 10:00
a.m. in the Gathering Room. The book
this month is “My Grandmother Asked
Me to Tell You She’s Sorry” by Fredrik
Backman. All are welcome!

Market Day The Work of our Boards
“To market, to market, to
buy a fresh pig….. “
I know I’m dating myself
with this old nursery rhyme,
but some things are just too good to let go of.
One of those things is Market Day. This year
marks our 55th annual Market Day--an event
that showcases the talents, skills and abilities of
our Moravian women. This year’s Market Day
will be held on Saturday, October 24, from 9:00
a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event is open to the public.
Friends and family are welcome!
We are bringing back many of the things
the Lake Mills community has come to love. A
Silent Auction will be held throughout the day and
winners will be announced at the end of the event.
The Craft Room will show off the crafting talents
of our women, including items like embroidered
towels, mittens, scarves, quilts and blankets, hot
pads, seasonal decorations and much more. Our
Bakery will have cookies, breads, pies, bars and
butter horns for sale. The New-to-You room will
have slightly used items that will be new and
exciting to you at GREAT prices. Our Produce
room will feature home-canned goods, fresh
produce, herbs, dried flowers and gourds. The
Baubles, Bags and Bling room will highlight
stylish gems like jewelry, handbags, jackets,
gloves and hats. Stop by the Moravian Room
for merchandise with a Moravian flair - Advent
stars, ornaments, jewelry, and cookbooks, among
other things. The Sunday School children will be
selling their recipes in a jar - always a favorite!
And the famous Candy Booth will have the
ultimate in caramels and other candies to please
your sweet tooth.
New this year, Nancy Schultz will offer
instruction on how to assemble beautiful ornamental pumpkins that you can use in a centerpiece
or display. Pumpkins are made from flannel and
other materials, filled with rice and topped off
with a real pumpkin stem. They are beautiful
and look great in a fall display! Nancy will offer
these lessons throughout the day in the Produce
Room and you will be able to take home your
finished product.
Learn how to make a Moravian star! Suzanne Becker will be in the Craft Room offering
Moravian star lessons throughout the day. Stop
by to learn this Moravian tradition. Make your
own star to take home with you.
Our fabulous Moravian luncheon will begin
serving at 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Bring an
appetite. The ladies will be serving our traditional
Swiss steak dinner with delicious sides. Always
plenty to eat. Meals are $10 for adults and $5 for
children 11 and under. Can’t stay for lunch? We
will also be taking orders to carry-out the same
delicious meal.
Bring the kids too! If they get tired of shopping, let them play in the nursery. Our fabulous
volunteers will be on-hand to keep them entertained and safe.
It takes a lot of willing hands to make
Market Day a success. We can always use more
help. Consider donating a gift basket or items to
the silent auction, baked goods for the bakery,
slightly used items for the New-to-You room
(no clothes or shoes, please), help serve in the
The Board of Elders met on August 20 for their regular monthly meeting. Following are highlights of that meeting:
• in terms of youth ministry, it was noted that the numbers for people attending summer church
camps this year were down across our region from previous years.
• the mission trip to Pittsburgh was very successful. We look forward to having the group share
their experiences with us on September 26 & 27.
• it was noted that Mia Wollin and Heidi Wendorf were wanting to step down from being leaders of
Mini-Moravians. A list of possible leaders was talked about and Bruce was going to ask someone
to lead this group.
• as we discussed recent worship services, it was suggested that on the really hot days in the
summer perhaps we could worship in the air-conditioned music room, particularly for Saturday
night worship and possibly even on Sundays. This will be taken under advisement.
• Bruce distributed the plans for this school year’s discipleship program. He also noted that he
thought there could be anywhere from 12 to 18 students in the program this year.
• it was noted that the Southern Wisconsin Moravian Churches are planning a Concert for Missions
to be held at LMMC on Sunday, September 27 at 4 p.m. Money will be split between the Tricklebee Café in Milwaukee and the water project for Ahaus, Honduras.
• the Elders approved the baptism of Levi James Schroeder, which will take place on September
26. He is the son of Scott and Angela Masche-Schroeder.
• they also approved a release of membership for Samantha Austin who is currently attending a
church in Minnesota where she is living.
The Board of Elders also met on September 17 for their regular monthly meeting. Following
are highlights of that meeting:
• it was noted that Anna Hoyt has agreed to take over the leadership of Mini-Moravians. She will
be assisted by Sue Trumpf.
• we look forward to hearing the mission presentation from the Pittsburgh mission team on September 26 & 27.
• we shared our experiences of the phone calls we made for “welcome back to worship” weekend.
Overall, it was a very positive experience but we as a group were surprised at how many numbers
had been disconnected.
• it was noted that Bruce will be doing a fall stewardship series beginning the weekend of October
10 & 11 and culminating on consecration weekend on October 31 and November 1. Please see
more information about this series in this edition of the Messenger.
• we talked about recent worship services and plans for upcoming worship services.
• the Pastor’s report and various committee reports were shared and approved.
The Board of Trustees met on September 10 for their regular monthly meeting. Following
are highlights of that meeting:
• the treasurer’s report was shared and it was noted that giving is down significantly from previous
years but that all of our bills and financial obligations are paid in full.
• various committee reports and the Pastor’s report were accepted
• it was noted that the windows in the Luke Room need a new outer combination window. We will
seek a bid to have these replaced.
• a bid was accepted to have the stained glass windows repaired or replaced. They are able to do
the work this fall with no disruption in our worship schedule.
• it was noted that Aaron and Paul Crossman repaired the parking lot drainage man hole. Thanks
to them for taking care of this.
• it was noted that the tuck pointing is done and that the work came in under the price that was bid.
• we are looking into new gutters on certain sections of the church.
• it was noted that the “No firearms allowed” signs are here; some have been put up and the rest
will be put up in the very near future.
• it was decided to explore upgrading the Fellowship Hall ceiling fans.
• there is a stump from an evergreen tree by the bell tower entrance that needs to be removed. The
Trustees are looking for bids to have that work done.
• it was noted that it would be good to place gutter guards on the parsonage gutters.

This is the Moravian Women’s big fundraiser

support local, national and international missions

News Around
The District
Several of our pastors from the Western
District, Eastern District, and Canadian District
gathered in the Pocono Mountains for a clergy
Cup of Covenant retreat. Pastor Bruce and Pastor
Jane Harberg from our congregation were a part
of that retreat.
The Western District now has four students
enrolled at Moravian Theological Seminary.
Our very own Ben Lippert is in his second year
and our very own Dan Miller is in his third and
final year. In addition, Greg Behrend is also
in his second year and James Heroux from the
Sturgeon Bay congregation is in his first year.
It was recently announced that Rev. Kurt
Liebenow has accepted the call to serve the
Watertown Moravian Church. Kurt currently
serves the Christian Faith Moravian Church in
DeForest. He will conclude his work in DeForest on November 1 and will begin his work at
Watertown on November 16. Please keep Kurt,
his wife Kathy, and her son Jared in your prayers
as they make this transition. Please also hold
the Christian Faith Moravian Church in your
prayers as they enter the call process. We also
encourage your prayers for Downey Moravian
in California, Grace Moravian in Michigan, and
Main Street Moravian in Northfield, Minnesota.

Sanctuary
Revitalization
Committee Updates
Your Sanctuary revitalization committee
continues to work very hard to get projects done
to update our worship space. The first contract
has been approved. You soon ought to be able
to see some repairs and replacement of some of
our stained glass windows, which is scheduled
to begin in September. The rest of the work will
be done after the first of January. We ask for your
patience and cooperative spirit as we will need
to be flexible during the first several weekends
of the New Year while work is being done in
our Sanctuary. Members of the committee are
Mike Denzin, Diane Fronek, Tammy Messmer,
Jay Meister, Mike Miller, and Pastor Bruce. If
you have questions or concerns about the project
please speak to these folks.
Tree Removed
You may have noticed that an evergreen tree
near the bell tower entrance has been removed.
It was decided that the tree had to be removed
because it was hampering the drying in the bricks
following any kind of moisture. The lack of
drying caused problems with our tuck pointing.
So, to be good stewards of the building it was
decided to remove the tree.
Mt. Morris Woodcutter’s
Day October 31
The 10th Woodcutter’s Day at Mt. Morris
will take place Saturday, October 31. Mt. Morris
will have lodging available
Friday night and will provide
Saturday breakfast and lunch.
We have a number of dead
trees to cut down, block and
split for firewood. We welcome and encourage
anyone who is interested to join us. We ask
that you bring/use your own chainsaw and that
you bring gloves. To register, please email Mt.

Hot Cocoa Mix from the Stewardship Committee
The crisp fall air is soon approaching. Warm your belly with some hot cocoa, warm your heart
by sharing with a friend. Recipe below makes 4 cups of dry mix.

3/4 cup mini chocolate chips
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Combine and keep in an air proof jar, like a mason jar
To make hot cocoa add the following to a mug and heat to desired temperature
• 2 tablespoons hot cocoa mix
• 1 cup milk
Optional: To make pumkin spice cocoa mix add to the dry ingredients
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/8 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

The world’s largest Christmas project of its
kind, Operation Christmas Child, uses gift-filled
shoeboxes to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible
way to children in need around the world.
Since 1993, the Samaritan’s Purse project,
Operation Christmas Child, has collected and
delivered more than 124 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 150 countries and
territories. In 2015, Operation Christmas Child
hopes to collect enough shoebox gifts to reach
another 11 million children. Shoebox gifts are
collected in the U.S., Australia, Finland, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, and the
U.K. More than 500,000 volunteers worldwide,
with more than 100,000 of those in the United
States, are involved in collecting, shipping, and
distributing shoebox gifts.
Individuals, families, churches and groups
fill empty shoeboxes with a “wow” item—like
a doll or soccer ball—and other fun toys, school
supplies, hygiene items, and notes of encouragement.
During National Collection Week, Samaritan’s Purse collects the gift-filled shoeboxes at
more than 4,000 drop-off sites in all 50 states
and Puerto Rico. More information about the

filled and the collection boxes for donations will

Looking Ahead to
Christmas Eve
It is not too early to be looking ahead to
Christmas Eve. Please note that we are going
to tweak our schedule a little bit for Christmas
Eve this year. We will have three Christmas Eve
services at 3:30, 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The reason
for the change is that in the past couple of years
we have actually had to turn some people away
from our earlier service. We hope you can join
us for one of these services and be thinking now
of who you would like to invite to join you for
the service.
