To all you lovers of the good things in life: good company, good live music and especially the finest ales & pies, welcome to the Smugglers Den. Our selection of ales this year brings you an eclectic mix of North and South. We have our biggest selection of Cornish ales to date, but also an interesting choice from up North. Many are light in colour, some are dark, some have a low ABV, some are a bit stronger, all are to be enjoyed!! The last twelve months has seen the emergence of more new micros in Cornwall. Penryn has the Rebel Brewing Company, (Barrowboys & Cornish Sunset both 4.0% & their 80/- Eighty Shilling at 5.0% which is making a name for them). The Harbour Brewing Co has also started up at Kirland North Cornwall, (Amber 4.0% & their Light Ale 3.7%). Another new brewery is Frys who are based in Boyton near Launceston: Haven 4,2% & Ruby Chough 4.5%. They started brewing last year and have recently started increasing their production, so expect to see more of them! New boys the St Ives Brewing Co have their 4.0% ale Boilers which is also being well received around the county. New for us this year is Penzance Brewery which was established at the Star Inn at Crowlas in 2008. Look out for Potion No 9 at 4.0% & Crowlas at 3.8%. Next time your down that way pop in for a pint, there’s usually a new brew to taste! St Austell Brewery’s Head Brewer Roger Ryman has crafted a couple of Festival Ales for us, so do try Smugglers Vintage at 6.00% and Fishermans Ale 4.6%. For your convenience we’ve listed our ales in order of their alcoholic strength expressed as ABV%. Many thanks to our friends at CAMRA, who have as always provided their support, but I am particularly grateful to Steve Wilmott for his advice and assistance. We also have a range of traditional cider for you to sample and naturally a wide range of soft drinks for youngsters and non-drinkers alike. Our kitchens have been working tirelessly to bring you a wide selection of pies & pasties: some are a plateful, (available in the pub and restaurant), some are designed for grazing in between pints. All are delicious! We also have a Hog Roast on Sunday, just for fun. Big thanks to all our team who have worked so hard to make the festival happen, my managers Sonya & Mick and their teams, Head Chef George and all the kitchen brigade, all the set up crew so ably led by Brian and stage management by Arthur Curwen. Most important of all, Simon & Sue wish you all a wonderful weekend and thank-you for making our Ale & Pie Festival so special.
