Somerset Art Weeks Festival 2013
Free Guide Somerset Art Weeks Festival 2013 21st September to 6th October An Abundance of Creativity, Celebrating Somerset’s Artistic Output. Exhibitions, Events, New Commissions and Artist-led Projects. Welcome... ‘Somerset Art Weeks is a much-loved and thriving annual event and I’m proud to support it. It plays an invaluable role in identifying and celebrating a huge variety of creative activities and projects in this county, finding emerging artists and raising awareness of them. I urge you to go out and enjoy this glorious festival of cultural exploration.’ Kevin McCloud Somerset Art Works is an artist-led organisation, we are Somerset’s only countywide agency dedicated to developing visual arts, weaving together communities and supporting the artists who enrich our lives. We create projects to encourage an atmosphere of adventure and experimentation in Somerset, inspiring artists and encouraging audiences to experience art at first hand. Somerset Art Works (SAW Ltd). The Town Hall, Bow Street, Langport, Somerset TA10 9PR t: 01458 253800 e: [email protected] w: www.somersetartworks.org.uk SAW offers an integrated membership service, professional development programme and curatorial services to support practicing artists and organisations in Somerset: providing bursaries, developing commissions, supporting collaborative working, providing networking and showcase opportunities, including our diverse annual Art Weeks event. Follow us on: twitter.com/SAW_Ltd www.facebook.com/somersetartworks www.somersetartworksblog.blogspot.co.uk ...to Somerset Art Weeks Festival 2013. An art festival involving a total of 109 exhibitions, events and artist-led projects in Somerset with more than 400 artists participating. It’s a phenomenal achievement that has required an enormous amount of effort by those participating and by the team running SAW in Langport, with support from our funders, Friends, sponsors and partners. On offer is a range of work from cutting edge contemporary arts to traditional crafts. ‘Make the Most’, an exhibition of new work from five internationally-renowned makers and curated by Craftspace, is at Barrington Court - itself a magnificent National Trust house. The works on display are made from locally sourced materials - willow, stone, paper, leather and wood - and transform the house and garden. We have combined with The National Gardens Scheme to create an art trail called ‘Abundance’ which highlights Somerset’s wealth of established and emerging talented artists working in the county. Other projects highlighted during the festival include ‘The Company of Cranes’, providing an artist’s view of the successful re-establishment of these magnificent birds to Somerset Levels. Artist Melanie Tomlinson is leading the project, working with schools and communities. A bold new art project is happening in Bruton, opening next year in the Spring. Hauser and Wirth are building five new spaces for international contemporary art. Director Alice Workman will give a talk about the project at Bruton School for Girls on the 25th September. Part of this year’s programme, there will be art professionals and artists sharing new ideas and knowledge of contemporary arts that are relevant to Somerset. But most importantly Somerset Art Weeks Festival 2013 is about exploring Somerset and seeing and buying art! During the visit to Cannington, Gloucester based artist Alison Cockcroft became interested in the idea of the walled gardens as a controlled environment for nurturing plants and particularly in the somewhat artificial methods employed by horticulturalists to encourage reproduction. Alongside Alison, Somerset artist Kitty Hillier explores her idea of ‘Walled Garden’ relating to the physical appearance of the space. The notion of ‘walled garden’ is taken as the ‘frame’, so that the viewer finds themselves actually inside the piece during their visit. The artworks within are to be constructed from wood, canvas, sand, paint as well as using some of the skills and techniques that she learnt about during her residency at Stroud Valley Arts Space (SVA) in May. In the last 10 years the NGS has donated £22 million to the charities it supports. In particular, the NGS has become the major regular funder of Cancer Macmillan & Marie Curie. 18 Abundance Garden Trail About the Garden: Located in the village of Cannington, Somerset, the Walled Gardens lie within the grounds of a medieval priory and were officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward in 2009. They are accredited as a ‘quality assured visitor attraction’ by VisitEngland, and are a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommended garden. There is also a tea room, plant sales area and a gift shop. The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) was founded in 1927, by opening private gardens of quality and interest to the public. The money raised was contributed to nurses of the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI), the forerunner of the district nursing movement. In the first year 609 gardens raised over £8,000. Through researching the ‘dispersal’ of Hadspen via the plants and seeds people bought there and planted in their own gardens, and conversations with plantswomen and visitors, the work studies the relationship between time, the garden and the gardener. The artists own collection of fading plant labels from Hadspen, studied under the microscope with their equivalent seed, begins to draw out the changing context of the garden, with the finished work showing at Tintinhull, where Penelope Hobhouse contributed to Tintinhull Garden during her residency there, who created the garden of Hadspen before the Popes. Ceramics | Glass | Painting, Prints, Drawing | Photography The Garden Studios Four effervescent artists showcase their very different skills in a beautiful, but hidden part of Wells. Jo Lucksted’s ceramics are as joyous as they are beautiful. And very, very desirable. Frances Harden’s photography and paintings amply demonstrate her eye for colour and composition. Edgar Phillip’s painted glass uses rich medieval colours and subjects in a masterly way. Chris Lee’s pen and ink drawings portray an intricate architectural world sketched from a precarious three legged stool. Great work in a great location, what more could you want? Cake? Or, contact Stephanie at the office 01458 253800 Why do we need the Somerset Art Weeks Festival? The Somerset Art Weeks Festival is the perfect opportunity to bring together and celebrate the work of visual artists from within Somerset and further afield. Throughout the years SAW has progressively built partnerships with local and national organisations in order to help artists to develop and showcase their work to the public. The Festival celebrates SAW’s commitment to create opportunities for artists to research, collaborate and make new work in a largely rural community with limited resources and few dedicated gallery spaces for contemporary art making. As the title of some of the headline projects this year suggest, we ‘make the most’ of what we have, showcasing an ‘abundance’ of creativity and talent found in Somerset.
