Inside Out Festival Sally Taylor Executive Director TCCE The Inside Out Festival was established in 2009. Its aim was and continues to be to showcase the contribution of its London university members to the capital’s cultural life. Approximately 40 events took place that year in a range of HE and cultural venues including: Somerset House, National Portrait Gallery, The Courtauld Institute of Art, King’s Place, Bridewell Theatre and Maughan Library. Although there was no set topic for the festival, overlapping themes did emerge, including the nature and purpose of creativity… Inside Out Festival 2009 opening debate: ‘Art - what’s it good for?’ chaired by Michael Portillo David Toop’s ‘The Laptop Orchestra’ in King’s College London’s Chapel Arts Industry: ‘Inside Out will showcase the “knowledge exchange” which has been the hallmark of LCACE’s mission to build links between its nine partner universities and the arts world.’ In 2010, the festival grew to include over 50 events across a wide range of art forms, including exhibitions, music, literature, film, visual arts and fashion. Histories of Hatred, Birkbeck Cinema As well as Somerset House, the NPG, ICA and the Courtauld Gallery, the following new arts partners became involved: The Arts Catalyst, Tate Britain, Barbican, Southbank Centre, South London Gallery, British Academy, the RSA, British Council, Calvert 22, The Arts Catalyst, the Ballet Boyz and the House of Fraser. 2010’s opening debate featured the Rt Hon David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science, amongst others and the focus was ‘Should the University survive in its current form?’ 2010 also brought us a new media sponsor, the New Statesman, alongside Times Higher. Coverage included radio (Today Programme and BBC Radio London) and articles in the Guardian and Guardian Blog. Inside Out 2010. Museum of Brands, St John’s Church, Freeword Centre, BFI, Goodenough, Bars, pubs and clubs too Opening Event: University Challenged • Bamber returns! • A cross between University Challenge and Question Time • One of the panellists subsequently knighted Use of social media • 2012 first year to seriously use Twitter, Facebook and Linked In • Twitter in particular pushed up audiences v significantly Where are all the women?
