Inside Out` Festival as collaborative platform
Inside Out Festival
Sally Taylor Executive Director TCCE
The Inside Out Festival was established in
2009. Its aim was and continues to be to
showcase the contribution of its London
university members to the capital’s cultural
life.
Approximately 40 events took place that year in a range
of HE and cultural venues including: Somerset House,
National Portrait Gallery, The Courtauld Institute of Art,
King’s Place, Bridewell Theatre and Maughan Library.
Although there was no set topic for the festival,
overlapping themes did emerge, including the nature
and purpose of creativity…
Inside Out Festival 2009 opening debate: ‘Art - what’s it good for?’ chaired by
Michael Portillo
David Toop’s ‘The Laptop Orchestra’ in King’s College London’s Chapel
Arts Industry: ‘Inside Out will showcase the “knowledge
exchange” which has been the hallmark of LCACE’s mission
to build links between its nine partner universities and the
arts world.’
In 2010, the festival grew to include over 50
events across a wide range of art forms, including
exhibitions, music, literature, film, visual arts and
fashion.

As well as Somerset House, the NPG, ICA and the
Courtauld Gallery, the following new arts partners became
involved: The Arts Catalyst, Tate Britain, Barbican,
Southbank Centre, South London Gallery, British Academy,
the RSA, British Council, Calvert 22, The Arts Catalyst, the
Ballet Boyz and the House of Fraser.
2010’s opening debate featured the Rt Hon David Willetts,
Minister for Universities and Science, amongst others and
the focus was ‘Should the University survive in its current
form?’
2010 also brought us a new media sponsor, the
New Statesman, alongside Times Higher.
Coverage included radio (Today Programme and
BBC Radio London) and articles in the Guardian
and Guardian Blog.
