Print troubleshooting is available here: http://keyka.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/01/print-troubleshooting-for-pdf-sewing-patterns.html ********************************************************************************************************** General Info Supplies: ¼ yard 100% cotton focus fabric (checked fabric in photos) – NO synthetics or blends ¼ yard lining fabric (red polka dot fabric in photos) ¼ yard heat resistant batting like Insul~Bright ¼ yard cotton batting 5-6” piece of ribbon Seam Allowance: If your presser foot is ¼ - ” wide, use the edge of the foot as the allowance. It is a very easy to follow guide. Otherwise use a ” allowance. Allowance is included in the pattern pieces. Topstitch: Edge of standard presser foot or ¼”-”. Grain: Suggested grain lines are marked on the pattern pieces, but the grain can go either way. ------------------------------1. Cut Pieces ------------------------------Focus Fabric: Cut one piece A Cut two piece B Lining Fabric: Cut one piece A Heat Resistant Batting (Insul~Bright): Cut one piece A Cotton Batting: Cut one piece A ------------------------------2. Make Pockets ------------------------------a) Fold each pocket piece in half WRONG sides together. b) Press the folded edge. c) Top stitch along folded edge of the both pocket pieces. ------------------------------3. Attach Pockets ------------------------------a) Lay heat resistant batting piece A down on your work surface. If the batting has an obvious foil side lay the piece down so the foil side is on the bottom. b) Place cotton batting piece A on top of heat resistant batting piece A. c) Lay lining piece A RIGHT side up on top of batting pieces. d) Place pockets on top of lining piece A. e) Matching up bottom curved edges and pin or clip pockets in place. Tip: Use binder clips from the office supply store to hold layers of fabric together. f) Stitch around curved bottom edges attaching pockets to lining and batting pieces. ------------------------------4. Sew Loop ------------------------------a) Lay focus fabric piece A RIGHT side up and mark the center of one curved end. b) Bring the cut ends of ribbon together to form a loop. c) Hand stitch the ribbon loop securely to the RIGHT side of focus fabric piece A at center mark. The loop is facing in toward the center of the fabric piece as shown in photo. ------------------------------5. Attach Back ------------------------------a) Lay lining piece A with attached pockets RIGHT side up. b) Place focus fabric piece A with attached loop face down on top of lining piece. The focus fabric piece A and lining piece A are now RIGHT sides together with the pockets sandwiched in the middle. c) Pin in place around outer edges. d) Beginning below the upper right hand curve, sew 4-6 stitches and then back stitch. e) Increase your stitch length to a basting stitch and sew about 2.5” along the flat side. Back stitch 4-6 stitches over the upper edge of the pouch. f) Adjust your stitch length back to a regular straight stitch length and finish sewing around the outside edge. g) Press the stitches around the outside edge to shrink them and then press the seam open flat in the upper right hand side where the back stitching and long basting stitches are located. h) Notch curved edges. i) Trim any excess batting back close to stitches to ease bulk from the seams. j) Turn potholder RIGHT side out through the opening and press to neaten the edges. Tip: The pockets may end up on the focus fabric side when turning. Simply pull the pocket around the bottom edge so it is now on the lining fabric side. ------------------------------6. Finishing ------------------------------a) Slip stitch opening closed. Tip: To learn the basic slip stitch go here: http://keyka.typepad.com/my_weblog/200 8/11/how-to-slip-stitch-a-seamclosed.html b) Fold the loop down on the pocket side of the potholder and pin in place. c) Top stitch around outer edge stitching over the ribbon so it will be held out of the way when the potholder is in use. d) Top stitch through the center to help make folding easier. e) Clip any stray threads.
