President’s Post
Hello everyone! Just a reminder, we will be meeting in our usual place, Rm
213 at the UWO Alumni Welcome and Conference Center for the rest of the
2015-16 season. Also there will not be a meeting in December as we celebrate
the beginning of the Christmas season with a Christmas Party at Primo's
Restaurant. Sandy & Carolyn have arranged a wonderful evening for us to
enjoy. If you plan on attending please check the newsletter for the RSVP
form.
Sandy Melroy will be on hand to give us a demonstration of painting on silk
fabric. Which is fabulous as we have a workshop featuring Sandy coming up
in February. No doubt the workshop will fill up fast!
We will be having our regular art break during the November meeting so
please bring an art piece you would like to talk about and share with other
members.
Membership dues are now past due. So if you have not paid your dues for the
2015-16 season please pay at the November meeting.
If anyone has an issue, concern or announcement to present at the meeting,
please email or call me and I will place it on the agenda.
Don't forget to take in the Gallery Walk on November 7th to view all our
creative pieces at Becket's Restaurant. Let's all hope for a sell out!!!
See you at the meeting.

Jo Geenan
With more than 40 years of
artistic experience in the
study and use of oils, water
colors and acrylics, Jo has
chosen pastels because she
finds that they allow her to
depict the feeling of light
and place with the greatest
effect. The pure colors and ease in build-up and blending to create both drama and serenity are the joy
expressed in each of her works. An award winning, self directed artist, Jo is very involved in the arts
community of the Fox River Valley. She has been a member of the Trout Museum, and a co-founder of the
original critique group of the Fox Cities. Her work is on display in numerous private and corporate
collections across the U. S.
Pastel is pure pigment, the same pigment used in making all fine art paints. It is the most permanent of all
media, when applied to conservation ground and properly framed. An art piece is created by stroking the
sticks of dry pigment across an abrasive ground,
embedding the color in the “tooth” of the paper,
sandboard or canvas. If the ground is completely
covered with Pastel, the work is considered a Pastel
painting; leaving much of the ground exposed
produces a Pastel sketch. The name Pastel comes
from the French word “pastische” because the pure,
powdered pigment is ground into a paste, with a
small amount of gum binder and then rolled into
sticks. Traced back to the 16th century, its invention
is attributed to the German painter Johann Thiele.
A Venetian woman artist, Rosalba Carriera, was the
first to make consistent use of Pastel.

Member Spotlight
Kathy Murphy
Since graduating with an art major from UWO
I have been privileged to work in art as a
graphic designer. (And get paid)! My first job
was for a furniture manufacturer where I designed their advertising, all publications, and
showrooms as well as some product design and
interior layout design. It was there I also worked as photographer, shooting
large format 4x5 film in the company studio as well as location shooting at
libraries and restaurants all over the country. I even had a darkroom where I
developed film and made prints.
Later in my career, I was a retail ad designer at the Oshkosh Northwestern,
along with Jill Soik, for a few years. Next followed a marketing and design position at a local human
services provider where I also coordinated company events. Now I have the job of my dreams as a graphic
artist at 44 North Advertising & Design.
Challenging me is a constant demand for new ideas that are unique and
creative to help each client increase their bottom line. It is quite a different
mindset then doing a painting to please
yourself and having lots of time to let it
develop. Artists who do commission work
can understand somewhat. Additionally,
I’m always juggling several projects, for
several totally different clients at the same
time, all wanting something creative and uniquely theirs. It is not a very
relaxing job.
My tools are the computer applications Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and
PhotoShop but concepts and designs are also sketched and developed on
paper. Recently, I had a larger project sketching a series of drawings for
storyboards for a videographer who needed to shoot a corporate
commercial at Lambeau Field.
Photography is the medium of choice for my
personal artwork. I really enjoy working with
a camera, but I tend to shoot way more photos than I will ever show or print.
I’m always trying for that image that is truly arresting and memorable. It just
doesn’t happen often enough.
Bookmaking is also a favorite art of mine. I love the process of paper design,
working out the structure and creating an artistic handmade book. Combining
bookmaking with photography is one of my latest interests.
Watercolor is another medium I enjoy, though I have a long way to go before
I can call myself a watercolor artist. Perhaps when I retire I’ll conquer that
challenge. I have a lot of photos to work from!
