The November 14th meeting will be our Annual General Meeting
(AGM) where, among other things, we will vote in our new Directors.
Please make an extra effort to attend this meeting so that we can
have a Quorum. We need a two-thirds majority in attendance.
3000 Mile Buddy Flight
We are very anxious to hear the details of Peter Meszaros and William Yaworski’s trip down to Freeport
Bahamas in Peter’s Cessna 172 (including a no-doubt tense 80 mile flight over open Ocean!).
We received a few “teasers” from William but they’re saving the good stuff for a full slide presentation at
an upcoming monthly members’ meeting.

Banner Plane
This month marks the first EAA Chapter 65 Newsletter with a new monthly updated “Banner Plane”.
Each month one of our member’s aircraft will be profiled along with some interesting build and bio
information. I’m sure we’ll see Al Grant’s RV-6 back on top in one of the coming months!
Our Banner Plane on the cover of this month’s Newsletter is our Treasurer,
Mark Rataj’s RV-7A, C-FZUM.
Mark has been an AME for Air Canada for 34 years with both M1 and M2 ratings
and has endorsements for the Airbus A-319/A-320/A-321, Embraer EMB-190,
Boeing B-767 and B-777.
It took Mark 4½ years (about 2500 hours of construction time) to build his RV-7A,
as well as quite a few hours of assistance from his brother Bernie.
The aircraft was ordered and built as a number of subassemblies. The tail kit was
ordered from Van’s Aircraft in late 2005. The kit arrived January 4, 2006 at his home and construction
began. The empennage was completed to the pre-cover inspection level at the end of March 2006.
Thereafter, the wing kit arrived on September 6, 2006 and the fuselage kit arrived on May 30, 2007.
Bill Tee, the MD-RA inspector carried out the pre-cover inspection of all components constructed since
the start of the project on November 16, 2007.
The engine, propeller and avionics were
purchased in 2008 from Aero Sport Power,
MT Propeller and Aircraft Spruce and
installed through to the end of 2009
On January 20 and 23, 2010 all parts of the
aircraft were moved from his home to
Stoney Creek Airport where mounting of the
wings and empennage to the fuselage and
final airframe and systems preparations
proceeded through to June 12, 2009 when
the aircraft weight and balance was carried
out.
On July 3, 2010 the final inspection of CFZUM was carried out by Jamie Alexandre,
the MD-RA Inspector, at Stoney Creek
Airport
C-FZUM was completed and test flown on July 10, 2010.

Mark Rataj’s RV-7A C-FZUM ...continued
Currently, the aircraft has 210 hours of airtime on it.
It cruises between 135 kts and 162 kts depending
on the altitude and power setting used.
Mark, as an (over) qualified AME, meticulously
maintains the aircraft himself.
The engine is an O-360-A1A from Aero Sport
Power. It is a hybrid engine in that it uses a
Superior Air Parts core with roller lifters for the cam
shaft, dual E-Mag Air self powering electronic Pmags for the ignition and ECI silicone carbide
treated cylinders.
Avionics are dual Advanced Flight Systems AF-3500 displays with Advanced Flight Systems AOA sport
for angle of attack warning, TruTrack Digiflight 2 dual axis autopilot, Garmin 496 GPS, Garmin GTX-330
transponder, a Garmin SL-40 comm. and a Kannad 406AF ELT.
Electrically the aircraft is powered by all B
and C Specialty Products components
including dual alternators. It's an all-electric
system, no vacuum pumps installed.

Around the Club
The new hangar construction at the Airport is progressing
daily. It is now completely enclosed and the concrete floor
has been poured.
William sent in some pictures of the process of pouring,
spreading and smoothing the new floor.
Progress is also being made at Dale McCrum’s place in
Rolling Dam, New Brunswick...
We are currently in the process of organizing and centralizing all record keeping and documentation of
the EAA Chapter 65.
Our club and its history is 55 years old. Most of the original members are gone and many memories
have already been lost.
Photographs and News Articles are fading as much as the memories themselves.
We would like to gather together any photographs, documents and articles making up the history of the
club and file them away in an organized system.
We would also like to digitize everything and store it away electronically along with backup copies.
If you have anything that chronicles EAA Chapter 65 in any way, we would appreciate if you could pass it along to the club, or at very least,
lend it for the purpose of scanning and duplication.
Please take the opportunity to save the history of the club and bring the materials to one of the next few meetings. If that isn’t convenient,
please pass it along to someone who can attend.

Winter is Coming
Most of the incidents and a few of the accidents every winter result from trying to taxi, land or take off in conditions
not suitable for such operations. Winter weather can make ground ops treacherous in a number of ways. Icy
runways can cause loss-of-control accidents on landing, which can be high-speed because there’s limited braking
power. Get braking reports and listen to them. Deep snow, especially if it’s wet, can greatly increase takeoff
distance and increase landing roll. It’s often said that the Inuit have a hundred words for snow; we should aim to
be as sensitive, because the kind of white stuff we’re landing in can greatly impact our controllability and
performance.
The kinds of common-sense things we do in regard to ice at any time of year make twice the sense in winter,
when you’re more likely to accumulate ice and far more likely to pick up the worst kind, freezing rain. Even if
you’re in an airplane not equipped for flight into known icing, you need to avoid it and, if you get surprised, get out
of it quickly, even if that means turning around and going back to where there was no ice before. If you do
inadvertently pick up ice and can’t escape it easily, then be smart. Tell the controller that you’re picking up ice and
seek help in finding an altitude that’s ice-free. With freezing rain, that can be a higher altitude, though a smooth
180 as soon as you start picking up clear ice, if possible, is almost always a better bet. If you do pick up ice that
you can’t shed, when you come in to land, keep your speed up — ice increases your stalling speed, though by
how much is hard to tell, so be conservative. Also, limit, if possible,
the use of flaps. More than one iced-up airplane has been on
approach and under control only to stall suddenly when flaps were
applied.
