President’s Message
As another school year has begun, we again ask where the time has gone. I
am sure our previous leaders also felt that way. How quickly 85 years have flown
by. Our address has changed, the client’s needs have changed, our mission has
changed, and so has our name. The things that have stayed the same for all of these
years have been our commitment to the Berks County community and our passion
to help those struggling with blindness or visual impairment and their loved ones.
Whether an educational session, one on one counseling, support groups, lunch
bunch, socialization programs, vision screenings, health fairs, home visits, Spanish speaking sight loss
support group and counseling, workshop employment, summer camp, or referrals to other agencies, our
commitment is strong and true. We continue to look for other ways to help our community and to expand
our services to meet the changing needs.
To continue celebrating our 85th anniversary, we have several events planned in October. We will host
a yard sale on Saturday, October 11th from 7AM-1PM, our 3rd annual Harvest Fest and 2nd annual Run/
Walk for Sight will be on Saturday, October 18th with the Run/Walk beginning at 9AM and the Harvest Fest
from 10AM to 2PM, and a joint fundraiser with Kutztown University with a Dine in the Dark program on
Friday, October 24th. Please continue to check our website at www.vrcberks.org for more details on all of
these events.
Thank you for your support of our agency.
Here’s to our first 85 years and the upcoming 85!
Until next time,
Lori Schermerhorn, President/CEO

Vision in School
Vision is more than just the ability to see things clearly, or have
20/20 eyesight. Here are a few skills children need for reading
and learning:
Visual acuity The ability to see clearly at various distances
for viewing the chalkboard, the computer, and reading a book.
Eye focusing The ability to quickly and accurately maintain
clear vision when looking form the chalkboard to paper on a
desk and back again.
Eye tracking The ability to keep eyes moving along a printed
page, or following a moving object like a thrown ball.
Eye-hand coordination The ability to use visual information
to direct the hands when writing or trying to hit a ball.
Visual perception The ability to organize images on a
printed page into letters, words and sentences, and to
understand what is read.
Section 1402, of the PA Public School Code of 1949 requires
schools to test a child’s vision at least annually. Early detection
of visual problems is important in order to give the child the best
opportunity at a full education. Undetected vision problems may
lead to other difficulties in school, such as behavioral issues,
distractibility and hyperactivity.
A child may not tell you that he or she has a vision problem
because they may think the way they see is the way everyone
sees. Here are some signs that may indicate a child is having
vision problems:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
Short attention span
Avoiding reading or other close activities
Frequent headaches
Covering one eye
Tilting the head to one side
Holding reading materials close to the face
An eye turning in or out
Losing place when reading
Children need many things to be successful in school,
and good vision is one of those things.

Summer Sizzled at VRC
The summer of 2014 brought with it two weeks of activities
for the clients of Vision Resource Center
Children with visual impairments in grades 2 through 8 had the opportunity to
attend a week of daycamp that was filled with fun and fulfilling events. The children
traveled to the Fightin’ Phils stadium where children, volunteers, and staff were treated
to a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium, an autograph signing with players from
the Fightin’ Phils, and time in the Fun Park to enjoy the moonbounce and sliding
board. The children also traveled to Shady Hollow Assisted Riding for the experience
of riding and grooming horses. Musical guests entertained the campers during the
week, as well as presentations with Seeing Eye puppies, reptiles, and amphibians. The
children’s camp week culminated in a picnic where attendees enjoyed the music of
Jim Meck.
Adult Activity Week followed the children’s daycamp with the options of four day trips
and a picnic for adult clients to attend as they chose. Calvaresi Winery was a popular
site for education about wine and winemaking, as well as a tasting for everyone
attending. The adults also traveled to a tour of the Fightin’ Phils stadium, as well as
a group picnic where everyone was entertained by the banjo expertise of Conlan
Kerschner. Adults in their 30s through their 80s rode horses at Shady Hollow Assisted
Riding and picnicked on the grounds of the farm.
Children and adult clients, as well as volunteers and staff, made memories and
friends during the VRC summer activities. Everyone involved is grateful for the
generous donations of Berks County residents and businesses that made the special
moments possible.

Vision Lunch Focuses on
Special Needs Planning
The presenters at September’s Vision Lunch at VRC were Mike and Chris Butterworth
of M.P. Butterworth and Associates in Reading. Mike holds a certification as a
Special Care Planner, while Mike and Chris are both Chartered Special Needs Consultants.
Topics that were covered at the lunch
included the consequences of having no
financial plan in place for someone with
special needs or a disability, what a Life Plan
actually entails, a timeline that illustrated the
stages involved in planning, and the steps
that have to be taken to make the plan come
together. The emphasis was strongly placed
during the program that a Life Care Plan’s
goal is to ensure a continuing quality of life in
all areas, and that most families are unaware
of how to get started to achieve that goal.
Lunch attendees included VRC staff and
clients, many local professionals who interact
with children and adults with disabilities, and
other members of the community who came
to share information, social time, and lunch
with the group.
Mike Butterworth is a graduate of Kutztown
University with a degree in Education, and
a concentration in Special Education and
Elementary Education. He has been in the
Financial Services industry since 1984.
Some of the services available from M.P.
Butterworth and Associates are financial
reviews, assistance with Social Security
applications, college saving plans, trusts and
annuities, retirement, beneficiary, and estate
tax planning, and long term and disability
insurance.

Services Provided by Vision Resource Center of Berks County
Vision Screenings The Prevention of Blindness program targets the
children of Berks County. This is a free screening service that is provided
to children between 3-5 years of age. This service is provided at day care
centers, preschools, nursery schools, Head Start Centers, and kindergarten
registrations. These screenings are designed to detect eye issues at an
early age because the earlier the detection, the earlier treatment can begin.
Adult vision screenings are provided at various health fairs and community
events throughout the year. These screenings are designed to assess an
adult’s vision changes.
Sight Loss Support Group This group meets monthly to provide support
and problem solving for clients. This meeting is open to individuals who
are blind or are visually impaired and their family members, friends, and
caregivers. This meeting is designed to discuss the latest technology and
medical breakthroughs that may be of interest to the attendees.
Caregivers Sight Loss Support Group This group meets bi-monthly to help
other caregivers be a support for their visually impaired family member.
Caregivers need the support of others that have experienced the difficulties
with complete or partial vision loss and the changes that occur in
everyone’s life.
Counseling Is available for individuals who are struggling with the
adjustment of a visual impairment or blindness. Counselor and client will
work together to reach goals that are obtainable. The meetings will be
adapted for each client’s needs and desires.
Lunch Bunch This group meets monthly at various restaurants throughout
Berks County as a means of socialization. This group is open to those with
visual impairments or who are blind and their family members, friends, and
caregivers.
Assistive Devices A variety of assistive devices are available for individuals
to purchase or lease. These items are available to assist an individual with
vision issues to lead a more productive and independent life.
Vision Resource Center of Berks County
Spanish Speaking Sight Loss Support Group This group meets monthly to
provide support for those within Berks County who are blind or have vision
loss that feel more comfortable within the Spanish speaking community.
This group meets to discuss problems and possible solutions for difficulties
they are having dealing with everyday life with their visual impairment.
Education Programs Several education programs are available for different
age groups of children. These programs are designed to discuss eye health
and eye safety rules. Adult education programs can also be performed
concerning specific eye issues or ideas for continued independence within
the home with a visual impairment.
Information and Referral Services Following an individualized home visit,
information and releases are obtained to discuss the best way to assist
the client. If further assistance is necessary, referrals are made to the
appropriate agencies to best address the client’s individual needs for
success with their visual impairment.
Workshop Services Employing over 50 visually impaired, blind, or
challenged individuals, the workshop promotes developing skill sets unique
to each person’s abilities and interests. Pride in work done produces a
quality product for the customer. Each employee is paid for their specific
amount of work performed. All work is done specific to the customer’s
specifications.
Visually Impaired Support Groups at Local Assisted Living Facilities These
groups are to assist residents within Assisted Living Facilities to maintain as
much independence as possible while living with their visual impairment.
This group is to be a support to help other residents with daily issues they
may face due to their visual impairment.
