Alvernia in the Community
Alvernia announced a major new scholarship initiative
this week — that will benefit Berks County high school
students, and eventually students outside the region.
The scholarship has been made possible by the generous support of Shirley Boscov, her son Jim, and his
wife Cindy.
Students from Berks county high schools interested in
attending Alvernia and majoring in the arts, education,
business, or the sciences of health care, may now apply for a Shirley and Joseph Boscov Scholarship award
which blends merit and need based aid. The amount
of each annual award given will be $15,000, making
the Boscov Scholar Awards the highest merit awards
provided by the university. Applications will be reviewed
in January and qualified students will be invited for interviews. The program will be expanded to support students outside of the county in ensuing years.
The Shirley and Joseph Boscov Scholars program is
a dramatic extension of the Joseph L. and Shirley K.
Boscov Scholarship Fund, created in 1996 to benefit
graduates of Berks County high schools. It has helped
many Alvernia students realize their dream of a quality, private, higher education in Berks County.

Four faculty members have been awarded Faculty
Excellence Grants for the spring 2011 semester.
Richard Stichler (humanities) for collaborative
research with professors at Peking University and the
China University of Politics on “Western Interpretations of Chinese Philosophy;” Takele Mojire (humanities)
for an article on “The Impact of Foreign Aid on the Quality of Life” in Sub-Saharan Africa; Ana Ruiz
(psychology) for a paper to be presented at the Oxford Roundtable on “Social Justice for Women by Women;”
and Judy Warchal (psychology) for an article and presentation at the Fourth International Symposium on
Service Learning on “The Long Term Impact Of Multiple Undergraduate Service Options On Alumni.”
Kathy Davis (grad and cs) attended now the Women In Educational Leadership (WELC) Conference at the
University if Nebraska, Lincoln last week, where she co-presented “Expectations of Female Presidents vs.
Male Presidents in Higher Education.”
25 YEARS OF SERVING BERKS COUNTY
Tomorrow evening, Leadership Berks will celebrate its 25th anniversary, during a Gala at the
Crowne Plaza hotel. Alumni of the program will be in attendance along with supporters, and
organizations that have benefited from the program over the last quarter-century.
Since its inception, more than 700 graduates have contributed over 45,000 volunteer hours to
complete 150 service-learning projects for local nonprofit organizations.

On Sunday Oct. 24, VA Productions and the Rotary
Club of Reading are hosting a private charity event at
the Reading Movies 11 & IMAX Theatre, featuring the
premiere of ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition
and the Behind the Scenes Video of the episode.
Children of faculty
and staff are welcome
This episode, beginning at 8PM on ABC, features
a new home built by volunteers for Trisha Urban of

their time,
talent, and/or
treasures
to help the
colaborative
project become
a reality.

Rumor Has It...
The new four-stop elevator in Francis Hall is
operational! It can now be used to gain access to
the 100, 200, 300, and 400 levels. Individuals with
mobility challenges can gain access to the elevator
by entering the building at its south end near the
Maintenance Garage. Once inside there is an
obstruction free “accessible route” to the elevator
located adjacent the grand stair at the center of the
building. There is also brand new set of rest rooms
near the new elevator on the ground level.
-Does you have extra office supplies? Don’t throw
them out. Post them on the S Drive, and give them
a new home. Look for “Clare’s List” for the form.
