Threads

Choosing the Right Thread
Confused about whether you can use the same thread for hand and machine sewing?
Threads are made from a mixture of materials, both synthetic and natural, and each one has its own versatile
characteristics which harmonise with specific textiles. Buying thread can be really enjoyable or just plain frustrating if you
don't have a clue what to use, so here’s a quick run-down on what's what in the world of threads...
Sewing Thread
It’s a good idea to ask yourself the following questions so you can work out what you need for your project.

What are you making?
What fabric are you going to use?
What is the fabric made from?
What colour is the fabric?
Do you want a matching or contrasting thread colour?
What sort of texture is the fabric? Fine or thick? Stiff or stretchy?
Are you going to hand sew or use a machine?
Choose your thread based on the characteristics of the material you are working with, and select the best products
you can afford. We only stock quality, trouble-free threads to keep your machines running smoothly. Take a look at the
properties of the different threads, and see if you can narrow down your search.
Polyester
All-purpose polyester thread works best for most projects done with a sewing machine as it can
be used at top machine speeds. This synthetic thread will have some flexibility to it, so it's a good
choice for textiles with stretch, and it's colourfast and can be washed or dry-cleaned. It gives the
look of a cotton thread but provides superior strength and durability. Note: good quality polyester
survives higher washing temperatures, however inferior quality thread will pucker your fabric as it
shrinks to its 'memory' state.
Use for hand sewing but also perfect for your machine.
Quilting Cotton
A natural fibre which does not stretch or break easily. It's a good, general purpose thread which is
strong enough to withstand years of washing. As cotton does not have any elasticity, you wouldn't
choose it for use with a stretchy fabric. Cotton thread can also be dyed easily. If you have a cotton
fabric, you should work with a cotton thread.
Perfect for hand sewing and machine use.
Mercerised Cotton
Mercerised cotton is shinier and stronger than untreated cotton making it ideal for tougher jobs. It
also resists mildew. It accepts dye easily so is perfect for colour matching but doesn't stretch, so
shouldn't be used on stretchy fabrics. Mercerised cotton is also known as Pearl or Perle cotton.
Perfect for hand sewing and machine use.
Rayon
Rayon is a man-made fibre which is popular for use on embroidery machines as it performs
well at high speeds without fraying or breaking. Rayon offers a smooth and consistent stitch
which gives you a high quality finish, and although it isn't as strong as some other threads, it's a
convincing contender due to the shimmering spectrum of colours available and as a cost-effective
alternative to silk. Some rayon threads are colourfast but in general they do fade over time, you
can prolong their life by washing items with bleach-free products.
Use for hand sewing but also perfect for your machine and particularly good for embroidery.
Silk
Silk thread has a triangular shape which gives off its trademark sheen when light is reflected. It's
smooth, absorbent, flexible and washable and is superb for hand stitching delicate materials.
Couture garments are generally hand sewn with silk as using a machine can snag such exquisite
fabrics. Silk is perfect for embroidery, jewellery, lingerie and tailoring.

Never be tempted to use standard sewing
thread for embroidery. It is highly twisted and
therefore stronger and heavier than embroidery
threads. This can cause puckering of the design.
They are also designed to blend in with the fabric so
results can be dull and disappointing. Decorative embroidery
threads are thinner, lustrous and less twisted and the right
weight and strength for successful embroidery with very
bright and pleasing results.

will run smoothly through a machine on reduced speed and tension. Use a
large eyed needle (e.g. topstitch). When sewing by hand use short lengths.

thread due to its elongated eye and special
shaft design to prevent shredding and splitting.
The metallic thread will abrade the eye of the needle
and reduce its life so change it frequently.
Never use the same needle for rayon or polyester afterwards
