In 1997 the Ridley Bikes brand was founded. In the early beginnings, Ridley Bikes was only distributed on the local market, but in a few years time, Ridley Bikes became market leader on the Belgian market for race bikes. In 2001, we started our own branded component line 4ZA (pronounced forza). The company structure was reorganized in 2002 to prepare the launch into the international market. Ridley HQ doubled in size from 2.500m² to 5.000m². International break through was realized in 2004 with Ridley Bikes delivering race bikes to strategic countries (aka as the “bike countries”) within Europe. Thereafter, Ridley Bikes started to deliver race bikes worldwide. In Europe we provide our customers with a door-to-door service and the intercontinental markets are serviced through a distributor. In 2008 we started an second production site in Moldova. 2010 is the year of the Ridley move. Ridley Bikes moved to their brand new EHQ of 12.000m². The partnership with our professional teams is a key factor in the development of our products. The sponsorship and collaboration goes much further than only supplying the bikes. Ridley has a close relationship with both riders and mechanics to fine tune the development of our products. Feedback from the riders and mechanics is crucial and taken into account at every step of development. Our teams ride our stock frames, this allows us to test our products in extreme conditions. In this way, our product goes into the consumer market the best possible way. We call this Ridley Partner Development Philosophy. Our Flemish roots and sponsorship of the teams Belgian teams Telenet-Fidea and Sunweb-Revor explains our commitment to the local cyclocross scene. Feedback from the riders and mechanics resulted in specific cyclocross features on our frames and the first full carbon cross frame in 2005 named the X-Night. The riders helped us in the continuous search to improve our frames which resulted in the X-Night being the fastest and most advanced cross frame on the circuit. In the beginning we worked with local U23 road teams, this gave us ideal testing opportunities because the riders were spending countless hours training and racing on grueling Belgian pave. In 2005 the Pro Tour was launched by the UCI and we signed a 4 year contract with the Belgian Lotto team (Silence-Lotto). The collaboration with Lotto took Ridley to a new level. Not only did we win numerous titles, more importantly, we established a good relationship with the riders and mechanics. During this critical development timeframe we found two distinct requirements : superior stiffness vs light weight (or ideal ratio between stiffness and weight). Our sprinters wanted a superior level of frame stiffness and our climbers requested a lighter frame that did not compromise the frame’s responsiveness. We quickly attained the goals for both groups of riders in 2006. The Noah was constructed to surpass the Ridley standard for frame stiffness for strong sprinters like Robbie McEwen, whilst the Helium provided additional comfort combined with our best stiffness to weight ratio. In 2007 we set a new Ridley standard in further reducing the weight of the Helium so that a complete bike would weigh significantly less than the UCI 6.8kg limit. Conclusion : aerodynamics is our direction. With the production of our first Noah we found that we could build stiffer frames than the rider could handle. With the Helium we already had a bike lighter than the UCI required limit. The goal was not only, like many brands do, improve the streamline of the bike. BUT for us a perfectly streamlined bike was just the basis to start looking for the real aero drag problems on a bike. Therefore, Ridley Bikes launched the Ridley Aero Project (now know as FAST-concept). After 2 years of extensive testing in the wind tunnel and on the track, Ridley Bikes introduced the new Dean and Noah to the market. Every detail of these frames has been studied carefully, equipped with F-Splitfork and F-Surface technology. In the Tour de France of 2011 we introduced the F-Brake, the first “real” integrated brake (for more info see FAST-concept p 10-18). 2009 an 2010 Ridley teamed up with the new Pro Tour Team Katusha. Since 2011 Ridley has a partnership with Pro Team Vacansoleil-Dcm. This Pro Team consist of riders such as Belgian champ Stijn Devolder, Bjorn Leukemans, Romain Feillu, … Both parties had the desire to race with the fastest bike in the world. The riders are all aboard the Ridley Noah and Helium for the road races and on the Ridley Dean for time trial. Ridley is also involved in triathlon with Belgian based U-Place team (Bart Aernouts, Tine Deckers), Italian based Peperoncino team and US based Zoot team. Obviously our FAST concept developments play a key role in our Tri bikes. Our future continues with aerodynamics. In 2010 Ridley Bikes moved to a 12.000 m² high tech building. The new building is equipped with the newest technology which allows us to build the best bikes in the world. Furthermore, Ridley Bikes will build its own wind tunnel within the factory setting in the Belgian headquarters which will allow us to develop our aero technology in the best possible circumstances. Pro Cycling Team ABOUT RIDLEY | 2 WE ARE BELGIUM Flanders, the Flemish region of Belgium is infamous for serving up the harshest cycling conditions- where driving rain, cobbled noncategory climbs, snow and ice are the norm for its 6,000 racing clubs. This place, the pounding heart of a passionate cycling nation where the most revered Spring Classics unfold, is the cold steel anvil where flesh and bone are forged into the greatest racers of all time. This is Belgium, home to Ridley Bikes, and it is here where our products are engineered, hammered into raw form by the roads themselves, and where we refine them in competition. This is Ridley. We are Belgium. RIDLEY DEVELOPMENT PHILOSOPHY: “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION” On all Ridley frames we follow one development philosophy – ‘FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION.’ Every tube shape, frame construction and geometry is chosen for a specific reason. From the beginning, reliability, stiffness and strength have been the essence of our design. Why take risks in designing when nature offers some solid and well proven examples? Most of our tube shapes are inspired from shapes found in nature. For example in our road range a water droplet shape is featured in our aero shape, an oversized circle is the basis for our stiffness to weight range and a diamond is foundation for our strength range. Reinventing and optimizing nature’s examples have led to a range of top performance bicycles. These are the fundamentals required to resist the toughest cycling conditions in the world, our home ground - BELGIUM ABOUT RIDLEY | 3 RIDLEY PRODUCTION – STEP BY STEP A. DEVELOPMENT PROCESS Goal : To build the best race bike in the world! The concept of each and every Ridley design originates from the same precept: cycling amateurs, professionals, cycling clubs, all with the same goal - race on the best and fastest bike in the world. Our development process is both simple and efficient. 1. We start a wish list with clear goals to be implemented in our range. 2. Every solution is thought-out with our the same philosophy – “form follows function”. 3. Before we put our frames inro production our comprehensive list is converted to 3D computer designs on which we carry out extensive testing. A few examples of computer simulated tests : Integrated seat tube The integrated seat tube with the corresponding seat post clamp provides extra stiffness and an improved aerodynamic function. Standard Oversized RS ISP Headset The oversized lower bearing in the head tube, introduced by Ridley in 2001 on the Damocles, is the norm in the bicycling industry now. The vibration on the fork is significantly reduced because the forces developed in the head tube are spread over the larger surface of the oversized bearing. This improves handling and provides extra stiffness on the fork. Aero In addition to physical windtunnel testing we work heavily with 3D simulation modeling which allows us to cover all variables. ABOUT RIDLEY | 4 4. The prototypes developed from these designs are originally stress tested on the computer. Once these model tests are satisfactory we move the testing process to the field and our Ridley professional riders. 5. These prototypes are continuously fine tuned until every detail has achieved our standards. The choice of the different carbon fibers is crucial. RIDLEY CARBON FIBER SAVE WEIGHT Our carbon frames require more than 100 different carbon fiber materials. Every layer of carbon requires the exact strength and stiffness with different lay-ups in different frame locations. We use the knowledge and experience of our engineers to determine the correct layup schedule of the carbon layers in order to obtain the best result. Our ton rating is very simple – it simply refers to the strength rating, or tensile modulus of the carbon. The higher the rating, the stronger the carbon, thus less material is required. Our ton ratings are 50, 40, 30 and 24-ton high modulus carbon fiber. However, each type of carbon has distinct characteristics : we use the type of carbon best suited for the location and ride characteristics of each frame. We use different techniques to save weight in our frames. Having a clean internal frame tube is an essential part of the process as it helps to reduce weight as well as allowing a more dense and strong carbon layup. Foam cores are used during frame construction as a mold allowing the woven carbon layers to be layed-up creating the structural integrity of the frame.The carbon is wrapped around the foam cores which eliminates the possibility of internal wrinkles within the tube. Once the carbon is cured we carefully remove the core.leaving a clean and empty frame. Excess carbon material and the use of heavier alloy materials is avoided by utilizing a hollow carbon shell in the bottom bracket junction of the frame. At both sides of the bottom bracket shell we use bonded cups instead of a full alloy bottom bracket tube. This enables us to reduce the weight by 100g. B. PRODUCTION OF RAW FRAMES After the development phase, we produce moulds for the production of raw carbon frames. Once the moulds fully developed, frames can be produced in whatever quantity is dictated by the demands of the market. ABOUT RIDLEY | 5 C. FINISH OF THE FRAME The raw frames are quality checked thoroughly with special attention to our carbon frames before they are sanded and prepped by hand. D. FROM FRAME TO BIKE Frames can be assembled utilizing thousands of individual components and tens of thousands of possible variations. Assembly is done individually by trained mechanics and thoroughly by hand. Customized component color: ABOUT RIDLEY | 7 RIDLEY ECOLOGY PAINTING We entered the universe of cycling as painters, and it remains a core technology at Ridley. We are still painting our frames here in Belgium where we relentlessly work to improve the luster and durability of our frame finishes. With our patented F-Surface technology, we integrated the painting process with aerodynamics, applying textured coatings on key areas of frame tubes to control air flow. (ANT)ARCTIC MATTERS: FROM EXPEDITION TO ZERO-EMISSION EXHIBITION: Ridley is partnering this artistic project aimed at raising public awareness of the consequences of climate change. In practical terms, (Ant)Arctic Matters consists of twelve containers (each 12 metres long) which have been converted by various Belgian artists to create a travelling exhibition on the theme of climate change. Our commitment to a professional quality finish goes deep below the surface of our frames. We have invested heavily to reduce the environmental impact of our processes to award-winning levels. Powder coating, used for our aluminum and aluminum carbon frames, has the smallest ecological impact of all painting systems, and we go further by directly recovering 98-percent of the overspray, and then filtering the remaining 2-percent from the atmosphere. During winter, we recover the filtered air from the painting booths to heat the factory. Carbon frames, which cannot withstand the elevated temperature of the powder coat process, are painted with a solvent-free, water-based system. Computer-controlled equipment reduces or increases the spray volume automatically, according to the complexity of the part to conserve energy and eliminate waste. RECYCLING: LEADING THE INDUSTRY In an effort to lead the bicycle industry’s efforts to make our sport more environmentally sound, we have initiated a unique recycling program at Ridley. All frames returned to Ridley, whether through warranty or crash replacement are recycled. Aluminum frames, carbon frames, aluminum parts, carbon parts, are all put into our recycling program. It’s not just the frames and parts, however, we also recycle all boxes, frame cartons, packaging and wrapping material to do our part to leave less of a footprint in our manufacturing process. We build really fast bikes and will continue to push the envelope of technology and we are proud to also put the same amount of energy and emphasis into our recycling program. The exhibition set out from Bruges at the end of 2009 for a three-year trip around the world on board cargo ships. In the energy container Ridley will provide several types of bicycles with which will generate electricity through a human power. Using pedal power to generate electricity is a very effective and creative way to draw people into understanding the power of power. This new building is a zero emission building with 1584 solar panels which are capable of producing 380160 WP. This photovoltaic installation produces more energy than needed for the factory with the remaining power submitted back into the national electrical system. ABOUT RIDLEY | 8 A SHORT SUMMARY OF RIDLEY’S GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY Whenever you hear the word ‘fast’, your pulse starts racing. That’s probably also why this catalogue caught your eye. You’re intrigued by speed and aerodynamics. Basically, you’re a human speed machine, living life in the fast lane. That’s why you might not have the time to flip through the whole catalogue. So here’s a short summary of our new groundbreaking technology. In other words: the ‘fast’ version of our FAST-concept. Most brands work in the same way, only focusing on streamlining the bike with droplet shaped tubes. For us, this is only the beginning. Our engineers, in their constant strive to develop the fastest bike in the world, analyzed aerodynamics to the bone. Please read on… F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT | 10 F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT | 11 MISSION ACCOMPLISHED THE FASTEST BIKE IN THE WORLD: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? Why does Ridley focus on aerodynamics? For many years, the goal of most bike manufacturers has been to develop a bike as light as possible. Yet in this field, most of what can be done has been done: reducing bike weight even further would endanger a rider’s safety. That’s why UCI-rules state that the weight of a professional racing bike has to be at least 6,8 kg. So as the weight of a bike has been finetuned to its fullest potential, the bike industry had to look elsewhere to improve bike performance. The stiffness of a bike maybe? Also in this case: what could be done, has been done. Making bikes even stiffer would make them totally uncomfortable to ride and very hard for the riders body to handle. Aerodynamics is the field where future bike technology will be shaped! That’s why aerodynamics have been Ridley’s point of focus during the past 6 years. In 2006 we started developing our aero range, which was launched in the Tour de France of 2008. Result: a time trial win, a sprint stage win and second place in the general classification. During the following years, our engineers kept analyzing and finetuning aerodynamics to the bone. Their mission: develop the fastest bike in the world. Result: So for us the most important feature is the speed of the bike. Our goal has always been and still is to develop the fastest bike in the world. The aerodynamics of a bike have a huge impact on the speed a rider can obtain on his bike! Fortunately, contrary to stiffness and weight, the field of aerodynamics still offers an enormous range of possibilities for improvement. THE F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT: REDEFINING AERODYNAMICS Did you know that at a speed of 40km/h, more than 2/3 of the total power a cyclist has to deliver is due to air resistance? So needless to say that the aerodynamics of a bike have a huge impact on the speed a bike can obtain! Ridley was one of the first in the bike industry who realized the importance of the aerodynamics of a bike and started developing its own aero technologies. During the past years, we have build several proven and patented technologies . You might think: “Nice, but so do the other brands.” Indeed, nowadays you hear many bicycle brands talking about aerodynamics. Everybody is aware that this is indeed the field were future bike technology will be shaped. However, most brands work in the same way, just focusing on streamlining the product. Of course ‘streamlining’ is important. It is after all the beginning of the development of an aero-bike. But it’s just that: the beginning. Unfortunately, this is also where most brands stop, putting the complete and sole focus on streamlining. At Ridley, we start were the others stop. Streamlining is only the start of further redefining aerodynamics! F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT | 12 SHAPING THE FUTURE BY STARTING WHERE THE OTHERS STOP … Our starting point: a perfectly streamlined bike, optimized on stiffness. With this perfectly streamlined bike in hand, our engineers started looking for the real problems causing drag, the natural resistance force that is restraining forward progress when cycling. If you are riding solo, you spend about 70% of your energy overcoming this resistance! When testing our products in the windtunnel, our engineers discovered 3 major issues increasing drag. In order to make the bicycle faster we had to work on these issues. Result: the FAST-concept. A tripod concept containing 3 major groundbreaking technologies, each working on a different field of the bike. Put them together and you get the fastest bike in the world. F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT | 13 Most turbulence created by the bike is caused by the wheels (and spokes). At the top of the wheels the spokes are moving forward while colliding with the frontal wind. This causes a major turbulence, creating drag and slowing down the bike. With our splitfork we guide the incoming frontal air away from the spokes and create in this manner an airstream, away from the wheels. Then we saw that the best competitor fork had less drag than our F-Splitfork™. Obviously such a test is Non-Significant, because when you ride a bike the wheels are always turning. So we performed a second test with the wheels turning: Test# fork blades Wheel Drag [N] 2 4 F-Splitfork™ Competitor fork double single turning turning 19.9 21,5 Difference [N] Difference % 1,60 7,44% Final conclusion: Drag is increasingly lower on the F-Splitfork™ as wheel speed is increased. The F-Splitfork™ has 7.44 % less drag then the competitor fork used in this test. The data shows the Ridley F-Splitfork™ out-performed the competitor's forks. F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT | 14 Setting a new industry standard by creating a groundbreaking innovation : the first real integrated brake ! There is off course no doubt about the necessity of a brake on a bike! But this brake, like other bike components, creates turbulence and causes drag, restraining the speed a bike can obtain. That’s why it has been one of the main goals of bike manufacturers to integrate the brakes as much as possible. Until now, many efforts have been made, yet no one was able to truly integrate the brake into frame and fork. Following years of in-depth testing, we therefore started developing our own brakes and integrated these into the frame and fork itself. The result: the first real integrated brake. This innovative setup results in less drag and cleaner lines: a faster, sleeker and better solution. In other words: the first brake in the world which makes you faster! If you see the picture of this unique brake system there’s no need to tell the aerodynamic advantage of this brake. Normal brakes, which are obvious undesirable obstacles in the airstream, create turbulence while the position and shape of our speed brakes reduces the air resistance to a very minimum. Moreover, creating the brakes like this, we are able to lengthen the F-Splitfork™ from dropout to fork crown, giving the bike even more of an advantage. F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT | 15 Track Test Following tests are performed on a closed track, so we can compare our windtunnel test result to a "riding" test. The rider keeps a constant speed and we measure the Watts needed to reach the speed, as well as the heart rate. Besides your heart beat goes down by 2,64% which was about 3 bpm for our professional testrider. Final Conclusion With the Noah FB you save more than 20 Watt (14,11 + 6,08) compared to a normal road bike, while your heartbeat goes down by more than 4%. This means that the track test proves our windtunnel results, our FAST-concept bikes make professional riders faster and conserve energy. F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT | 16 The first real integrated bicycle brake: F-Brake ™ Our integrated brake (F-Brake™) has 5 major advantages: Better aerodynamics: • The head tube in the front of the bike is in direct contact with the frontal wind, without a major caliper in the front which acts like an obstacle and causes turbulence. •The turbulence caused by the integrated brake arms is minimal because of the aerodynamic shape and the position behind the fork crown. • The proven advantage of the F-Splitfork™ increases, due to the fact that the split section in the fork can be increased in length from drop out to the fork crown. Saving weight: the average high-end alloy brake caliper weighs about 300gr. The F-Brake on the contrary is carbon and part of the frame/fork. Better braking performance: the brake is part of the frame structure, and not a caliper bolted on a fork. Two parts bolted together always have minimal movement. Our integrated brake has virtually no movement and therefore very consistent in brake power without losing “movement” power. Less maintenance needed. More easy to adjust: you can “open” your brakes on the handlebar. F.A.S.T.-CONCEPT | 17 The frontal wind has to “pass around” the tubes of the bike, and has to change its direction to follow the profile of the bike. To make it easier for the airstream to follow the profile of the bike and stay close to the bike, the tubes are designed in a droplet shape. However, even then it's not possible to keep the airstream in touch with the frame at every location. At sudden locations the airstream releases the frame, creating a wake on these locations which increases the drag. Therefore we did extensive wind tunnel testing and used oil mapping technology to locate the places where the wind releases the frame. To avoid the airstream releasing from the frame on these locations, we apply a structure surface on well defined locations in order keep to the wind close to the frame. Which in its turn, reduces drag.
