The location is in Hangar 45 on the north side of FWA on Ferguson Road. Chapters 2 and 37 have been invited. If you have further questions about the event contact Bob at [email protected]. Grant Nill, EAA 1104937, took a Young Eagles flight in January 2013. The flight was a lot of fun, he recalled. “It was one of the first nice days of the year,” he said. “It was clear skies, 50 degrees, and light wind. It was really cool to see the city from above.” The Young Eagles flight gave him free access to Sporty’s online ground school. “I passed the written with no problem,” he said, Then, in September 2013, he passed his check ride. He now has about 100 hours logged. Grant graduated from Bishop Dwenger High School in May 2014, and spent his first year at Purdue University thinking he wanted to become an airline pilot. But he soon discovered that he preferred general aviation and decided to pursue music as his career. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzBiMQNc4tA He plans to get his instrument and seaplane ratings when time and money allow, and says someday he’d love to own his own airplane, like a Taylorcraft L-2. He attended EAA AirVenture Oshkosh for the first time in 2014, and said “It was the greatest week of my life. The people are all really interesting and flying is the glue that holds them together.” 3 E A A C h a p t e r 2 E n c ou r a g e s a n d P r o m o t e s Sp o r t A v i at i o n a nd A e r o n a u t i c a l E duc a t i o n i n N o r th e a s t I n d i a na C h a r t e r e d O c t o b e r 1 , 19 56 www.eaa2.org ~ www.eaa.org ~ www.youngeagles.org ~ www.smdairport.com A r e y o u a p i lo t ? Les notes that this panel is from either a Fairchild PT-19 or PT-26. These primary trainers for the Army Air Corps/ USAF were used from 1939 through the 1940’s. Our Young Eagles have already benefited from this table top display in the ground school portion of the YE experience. When they get into their flight, they already know some of the instruments! Thank you Les for your contribution to the Chapter and to our mission to encourage and promote aeronautical education and to pass on aviation to the younger generations! Jim showed his RV-12 project and answered questions about this 2-seat, all aluminum light sport kit from Richard VanGrunsven at Van’s Aircraft (see www.vansaircraft.com). The kit comes with many components pre-drilled so they can be fitted together and then holes drilled full size. Several previous and current builders of various aircraft commented on the level of refinement shown in the detailed RV12 builder’s manual. The kit uses mostly pulltype aircraft rivets so riveting goes much faster that other Van’s aircraft designs that must have every rivet hole dimpled for flush rivets. Thanks to Jim and family for hosting a great time, answering many questions, and supplying snacks and drinks! 5 E A A C h a p t e r 2 E n c ou r a g e s a n d P r o m o t e s Sp o r t A v i at i o n a nd A e r o n a u t i c a l E duc a t i o n i n N o r th e a s t I n d i a na C h a r t e r e d O c t o b e r 1 , 19 56 www.eaa2.org ~ www.eaa.org ~ www.youngeagles.org ~ www.smdairport.com A r e y o u a p i lo t ? This two part series will explore recently announced hardware and software that makes your flying easier and lets you use many of the ADS-B IN benefits. The vast majority of pilots use the Apple IPad tablet and ForeFlight software as their preferred planning and mapping app. This first article will focus on this very popular combination. Sporty’s Pilot Shop has been a major factor in popularizing this combination and educating the pilot population of how useful it is. Sporty’s and Appareo (The hardware developer behind the Stratus series of portable ADS-B Receivers) have added the ADS-B IN capability of receiving weather and limited traffic in your cockpit. backup horizon and altitude that is synced with your course and with ForeFlight’s new three dimensional terrain view. Due to the higher computation rate required, this works best with the processors in the IPad Air 2 and IPad mini 3. Also note that the IPad Air 2 has an improved 10” screen with 50% better contrast for daytime flying applications. Mark Beck, Mike Blombach and many others use this combination for their flying and love it. When I saw how powerful this was, I realized that this combination would replace the Dynon Skyview that I planned to install in the panel of my Zenith Zodiac kitplane! Not only will this save a lot of money, but I can remove the IPad when I am done flying and use the tablet for other things. ForeFlight / Stratus 2S with terrain New offerings for this year include the Stratus 1S and 2S GPS and ADS-B receivers. The 1S offers GPS and ADS-B IN weather and limited traffic reporting. The 2S adds dual band IN plus electronic attitude gyros and an altitude pressure reference – all in a battery powered portable device! The 2S provides the artificial horizon data to the ForeFlight to provide a Note that this is to be used as a backup to your primary instruments only. The 2S provides GPS speed and not airspeed. It provides a reference cabin pressure altitude instead of static port pressure. Even so, as long as you cross check (Continued on page 7) 6 E A A C h a p t e r 2 E n c ou r a g e s a n d P r o m o t e s Sp o r t A v i at i o n a nd A e r o n a u t i c a l E duc a t i o n i n N o r th e a s t I n d i a na C h a r t e r e d O c t o b e r 1 , 19 56 www.eaa2.org ~ www.eaa.org ~ www.youngeagles.org ~ www.smdairport.com A r e y o u a p i lo t ? This is a great way to get the benefits of ADS-B IN weather. Note that the ADS-B IN traffic is quite limited – continue your scan!
