glossary
Alignment – The path the bus travels along a particular
line.

particular line.
Line-up – Scheduled time when most major local lines
arrive Downtown at the same time to provide transfer
opportunities. Line-ups occur on late-night and Sunday
trips.
On-time performance – This is an indicator of service
reliability. Buses that arrive up to five minutes after the
established stop time are considered on-time.

4/9/2015 12:20:05 PM
bus stop service improvement project
To improve bus service, COTA is reviewing the
spacing and locations of bus stops. Bus stops
should be spaced to balance the need for quick
travel times, and how far customers have to
walk to get to the stop. Strategically spaced
bus stops have positive impacts on quality of
service and time efficiency. In 2010, COTA started
reviewing all existing bus stops to ensure spacing
is consistent with new land use and population
density guidelines.
Bus Stop Spacing Guidelines
Population Density
Bus Stop Spacing Standard
High Density
20 people/acre
500-700 feet
Fully-developed Residential
10-20 people/acre
700-850 feet
Low Density Residential

bus stop service improvement project
Other Factors Affecting Bus Stop Placement
• Ridership
• Pedestrian amenities like sidewalks and crosswalks
• Special populations
• Nearby destinations
• Transfer opportunities
Some bus stops on the following lines were reviewed
through the Bus Stop Service Improvement Project for
the May 2015 Service Change:
11 Oak-Bryden/St. Clair
19 Arlington/Grandview
56 Tuttle Crossing
58 Dublin Express
59 Dublin Metro
80 OSU/Lennox
82 Grandview/OSU
84 Hilliard/Arlington/OSU
Commuter bulletins were posted at all stops proposed
for removal in order to gather customer feedback, and
the public comment period lasted for three weeks. After
the public comment period ended, COTA addressed all
public comments and reevaluated all stops that received
feedback in order to produce a final stop removal list.
For a complete list of bus stops affected, contact
COTA Customer Service at (614) 228-1776,
TTY/TTD (614) 275-5878 or visit the COTA website at:
cota.com/bssip.

4/9/2015 12:20:05 PM
transit system redesign
Through 2017, COTA will be making significant
changes to its bus system as a part of the Transit
System Review/Redesign (TSR). These changes
will improve service throughout the region by
increasing trip frequency on several lines, adding
consistent service on nights and weekends,
improving crosstown connections, minimizing the
need to travel Downtown if it is not your final
destination, and adding service to new areas in
the community. For more information, visit COTA.
com/TSR.
More people in central Ohio will have access to
COTA’s system when the TSR has been completed.
However, in order to make these changes, some
current service will be changed, combined with
other service, or discontinued. If you are losing
your current access to COTA’s system, there may
be other transit options available for you to travel
to work, school, medical appointments and other
locations throughout the community.

5 *
*The schedule shown may not include the correct
times for this line.
1 The first thing you will look for is your line number
and name. Our example is the 8 Hamilton Ave. The
8 Hamilton Ave. bus travels between Downtown
and the Hamilton Ave. area.
2 Look for your travel day (i.e., weekday, Saturday or
Sunday) and if you are going to Downtown or from
Downtown.
3 Find the location point closest to where you want to
get on the bus. For your exact bus stop, use Google
Transit or call (614) 228-1776.
4 Find the time you need to leave (i.e. 7:16 a.m.).
5 Move across the same line to the time you will get
off the bus (i.e. 7:52 a.m.).

mobility services
Mobility Serives is COTA’s paratransit
service for eligible persons who are
unable to use the fixed-route service as a result of their
disability. Guidelines for eligibility are based upon the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Inability to drive
a car, the distance from a bus stop and age are not
qualifying conditions in determining eligibility.
For more information on applying for Mobility Services, visit
COTA.com/mobilityservices.
Using fixed-route bus service
COTA reduced fare cards (Key and Senior IDs) allow
passengers to ride COTA’s fixed-route service for $1.

and adds flexibility to your travel plans. For fixed-route
information, visit cota.com, or call (614) 228-1776.

bike & bus
Designed to securely accommodate
most types and sizes of bikes, Bike & Bus
makes loading and unloading as easy as, well, riding a
bike. Visit COTA.com/bike for additional information.
HOW TO LOAD YOUR BIKE
STEP 1: When you see your bus
coming, remove all loose items
that could fall off your bike.
STEP 2: Make sure the bus driver
sees you want to load your bike.
When the bus stops and the
driver acknowledges you, you can
begin to load your bike. Always
load from the curb side.
STEP 3: Squeeze the handle on
the bike rack to release the latch
and lower the rack. Then, lift you
bike onto the rack and position
the bike into the rack’s wheel
wells. Next, raise and pull the
support arm up and over the
bike’s front tire. After loading,
board COTA and enjoy the ride.
Tip: Be polite. Use the closest bike
rack to the bus if you are the first
to load a bike.
UNLOAD IN A SNAP
STEP 1: When you get close to
your bus stop, please remind the bus driver that you
need to unload your bike.
STEP 2: First, raise the support arm off the front tire
and lower it out of the way. Then, lift your bike out of
the rack. If yours was the only bike on the rack, return
the rack to the upright and locked position. Last,
signal the bus driver that you removed you bike.
For safety reasons, operators cannot assist bike-rack users. You
must be able to load and unload your bike correctly without the
operator’s assistance. Bikes are mounted at the user’s risk. COTA is
not responsible for any theft or damage while the bike is mounted
on the rack or located at any COTA facility.

Your bus operator is there to help you arrive at
your destination quickly and safely.
Fold up strollers
COTA is happy to accommodate strollers when bus
operators feel there is plenty of space to keep everyone
safe.
Move toward the back of the bus, place children in seats
or on your lap and fold up strollers. Strollers should not
be left in aisles.
Be sure to remember that seats in the front of the bus
are for seniors and those with disabilities.
Strap in
If you use a mobility device, allow the operator
plenty of room to strap you in. This must happen
before the bus can continue.
