“BE the change you want to see in the world”
Greetings!
My name is
Ruhel Islam,
Small Business
Owner, fellow
human being,
involved citizen,
gourmet cook, and
hopefully - friend.
I welcome you
to Gandhi Mahal
Ruhel Islam
where we are
Owner, Gandhi Mahal
dedicated to bring
peace by pleasing the palate.
As we witness the turmoil in the Middle
East and watch with eyes riveted to the
struggles of people fighting for human rights,
we know there is much work to be done in
order for their battles to be won. My heart is
with them as they work through the issues
facing any new democracy, and I have deep
hopes for peaceful transitions that result in a
better life for the citizens.
Here in the United States of America, we
watch with anguish as uninformed, foolish
people burn the Quran out of ignorance about
other religions. I am very saddened by this
Ruhel Goes Back to School!
Gandhi Mahal is one of 200 entrepreneurial small businesses in the country
chosen from 17 cities. A Kick-off Celebration was held in April where all the Minneapolis small business participants were
introduced to each other and the sponsors of
the program, including R.T. Ryback.
The goal of the SBA Emerging 200 initiative is to identify 200 inner-city businesses
across the country that show a high potential
for growth—and to provide them the network, resources and motivation required to
build a sustainable business of size and scale.
SBA is increasing outreach to areas historically challenged by high levels of unemployment and poverty. Bolstering entrepreneurial
success in these areas will generate new
type of intolerant behavior.
This is an excellent example of why
education and knowledge are so important.
Not just an academic education, but a cultural
education. It is so very important that we give
our children knowledge of all kinds, so that
they make INFORMED decisions and form
educated opinions based on facts, not naive
beliefs passed on from generation to generation.
Being aware and respectful of other cultures sets a course to a global cooperative network for the good of all mankind, and blazes
a trail of peace. We can set good examples
of this by volunteering, doing random acts
of kindness, helping others, teaching friends
about your culture and learning about theirs,
there are so many ways of learning from and
teaching each other - at any age.
Let’s do our part to educate others, especially our children, that tolerance, acceptance,
and even celebration of diversity is something
that builds peace and community all over the
world.
Peace be with you - brothers and sisters,
jobs, attract investment, and provide a more
sustainable economic base in distressed areas.
The SBA Emerging 200 initiative will enable
the participating small businesses to engage
in an intensive curriculum focused on developing a winning, expansion strategy for their
business, including options for capital access
and contracting. Participants also will have
the opportunity to work with experienced
mentors, attend workshops and develop connections with their peers, city leaders, and
financial community. The initiative will run
executive training series in a number of urban
areas and Native American communities during the 2010 cycle.
We are very proud to have been chosen
for this honor and look forward to making
the most of the networking and resources that
will be made available.
Get Ready, Get Set, PLANT!
It’s time to plan, and plant. What better
way to sooth your cabin fever than to plan
your garden! And while you’re at it, you
could start some seedlings so you’re a little
ahead of the game by the time the last frost is
past. We have green chili peppers and squash
started and we are planning “lasagna gardening” – more to come on that subject.
Maybe you are feeling ambitious – in
which case you could plan and build a new
garden patch. Even a small, simple garden
patch can bring a sense of accomplishment
and happiness, your pride and joy! And a
garden is a good way to get some exercise
while you grow and harvest your own organic
healthy food, so get off the couch!
If you end up with too much of something, share it with your neighbors, or bring
some to your family members.
If you don’t have property for a garden,
ask your council member about Community
Gardens, let them know you would benefit
and appreciate having one in your neighborhood. Maybe you could help your neighbor
with their garden!

“Commit a Random Act of Kindness
and a Senseless Act of Beauty today!”
One day people will educate
themselves and their children
about other cultures so that
fears borne of ignorance
will disappear, and peaceful
coexistence will take place.
The first meeting to discuss the creation of a Longfellow Foodbank and Cold Storage space was held April 20.
First Meeting to Discuss Foodbank and Cold Storage
A meeting was held on April 20 to begin
the discussion about how to make Ruhel’s
vision of a Longfellow Foodbank and Cold
Storage space a reality.
This first meeting was well-attended, and
we discovered that there are many organizations and groups that have similar goals. It
would be good if we could connect with the
people who are part of these organizations to
share information about what works well and
what doesn’t. Think of the efficiencies that
could be possible if resources were pooled
and information is shared.
Ruhel’s vision is leading to action. If you
share our excitement and determination for
improving our quality of life, we invite you
to help make it happen.
The next meeting will be in the Gandhi
Mahal Community Room (which is another
of Ruhel’s visions which has become reality).
Please join us!
YOU ARE INVITED!
Please attend the next meeting, facilitated by
Carolyn Carr and Mindy Ahler Olmstead.
Help to shape our future!
Tuesday, April 26, 6:30–8:30pm
Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed.
Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.

Gandhi Mahal Hosts Fundraiser for
Pathways to Children Organization
“In a sense, the concept of ‘us’ and ‘them’ is almost no longer relevant,
as our neighbors’ interests are ours, as well. Caring for our neighbors’
interests is essentially caring for our future.” – the Dalai Lama
Pathways to Children offers unique global
journeys to allow individuals the opportunity
to connect with poverty stricken children and
make a meaningful and measurable difference in the world.
Grace Strangis, Founder & Executive
Director of Pathways To Children, was a
panelist on March 12th at the Connect India
2011 event. Pathways to Children trips are
designed for busy professionals, dedicated individuals and corporations who want to make
the world a better place. Pathway projects are
intended to help poverty stricken children and
their families advance their education, health
care and basic survival needs.

Ruhel Elected to Lake Street
Council Board of Directors
The Lake Street Council recently elected
Ruhel to be on the Board of Directors. Ruhel
accepts with honor and says:
“I am looking forward to helping to build
trust between government, independent organizations, businesses and residents. I want to
help make processes easier and more efficient. It is good to be involved in decisionmaking that takes our society forward, hopefully toward a more sustainable and healthy
economy, and a healthier environment for
small businesses and residents of the Lake
Street and Longfellow neighborhoods.”
Keep the Earth Clean!
by Hafsa Islam
Why don’t people
keep the earth clean?
This is why there are
green houses, the big
help and friends for
change, this makes
me wonder will earth
be a piece of garbage.
Garbage is not what
we need, we need a
beautiful earth that is
healthy.

Hafsa Makes an Important Point
Our
planet does it’s best to take care of
itself but it is up to us to make sure we are
aware of what we are doing to the earth.
It
is the responsibility of all people to keep
it clean and take care of it
–
it’s the only
planet we’ve got! teach others and let your
government know you think it’s important.
