Short Description
Adamed Group, privately-held Polish pharmaceutical company established in 1986, in the past 28 years has become one of the leaders of the domestic pharmaceutical market.
Parallel to organic growth, in the beginning of a current decade, Adamed made two important acquisitions. Firstly, Agropharm, a Polish OTC product company was acquired,
which strengthened Adamed’s position in this market segment. Secondly, Polfa Pabianice, formerly state-owned enterprise with a broad portfolio of both ethical and OTC drugs
was bought. Consequently, Adamed Group was formed. In the meantime, internationalization efforts were pursued. Currently, Ada med Group has its daughter companies in
Spain, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan. Today, our product portfolio consists of internationally marketed Rx & OTC drugs, dietary supplements and skincare products.
Historically, generic medical products have been a core business of Adamed. However, in 2001, we pioneered drug discovery in the Polish pharmaceutical industry. Through the
years we have built modern laboratory facilities and attracted leading scientists from Polish academia. Today, our research focuses on cancer and central nervous system
disorders, with its outcomes - biologic and small-molecule drug candidates intended for both, further own development and partnering. At present, Adamed Group has almost
1500 employees in Poland, 10% of whom is hired by the R&D Department.

Short Description
Celther Polska conducts internal R&D programs targeted to design own innovative drugs and diagnostic solutions mostly in the area of oncology, cell therapy and wound
healing.
R&D projects
Development of a new platform for anticancer drug screening (UDA – POIG.01.04.00-10-012/11-00)
Tumor cells spontaneously showing alteration growth factor receptor in vivo have failed to be culture under in vivo conditions. A new platform for anticancer drug screening is
developed to test chemical compounds designed against mutated form of the receptor.
Induced multipotent and pluripotent stem cells (UDA – POIG.01.04.00-10-011/11-00)
iPSC have propensity to form tumours. In contrary, multipotent stem cells appear to be less dangerous for prospective treatments, since they are not the source of teratomas.
We have developed new method of converting somatic cells, where de-differentiation is performed without reversing to pluripotency state.
New small molecule drugs for targeted cancer therapy (UDA – POIG.01.04.00-10-037/11-00)
Targeted cancer therapies are intended to interfere with cancer cells growth and progression by blocking specific molecular targets involved in functions related to their
division, cell movement and response to external signaling. The targeting approach developed by Celther Polska utilizes chemical compounds interacting with molecular
pathways triggered by mutated oncogenes. This mutated growth factor receptor is frequently amplified and overexpressed in prostate cancers and brain tumors.
Innovative cellular biodegradable dressing material applicable in chronic wounds and ulcers treatment (UDA – POIG.01.04.00-10-020/11-00)
A good dressing material should not only absorb the secreted substance, but also provide beneficial conditions for wound healing
Products on the market
Primary human cancer cell cultures from a variety of tissue sources, including breast, colon and prostate.
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells)
Celther iPS cells can be easily differentiated to iNS cells, induced cardiomyocytes or hepatocytes as well as other specialised cell lines.
Induced neural stem cells (iNS cells)
iNS cells are self-renewing, multipotent stem cells of nervous system, which in appropriate conditions can be differentiated into neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes.
Induced Cardiomyocytes
Induced human Cardiomyocytes are derived from iPS cells and consist of beating areas containing contracting cardiomyocytes.
Product under development
Innovative cellular biodegradable dressing material applicable in chronic wounds and ulcers treatment (stage of development: clinical studies).

The Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer
The Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer (CITT) was established in 2006; currently, it operates within the Science and International Cooperation Division. The Centre is
a worthy successor to the Team for Inventions and Patent Protection created in the early sixties of the last century. In cooperation with researchers, the CITT drafts application
documentation regarding inventions, utility models and other protected items to be submitted to the Polish Patent Office; it also manages the affairs to be considered by the
Patent Office. The main tasks of the team working in the Centre include: (1) supporting research and implementation projects; (2) providing comprehensive assistance at the
planning stage of research in order to increase chances to obtain legal protection for research findings along with their effective implementation and commercialize them; (3)
helping to analyse inventive designs; (4) identifying and supervising the course commercialization processes (licensing, sales, establishing a company or consortium). In
addition, the Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer provides support when it comes to establishing contacts with investors, entrepreneurs and research teams, and
helps to obtain funds for the development of innovative projects and their protection. For entrepreneurs the Centre is a source of information about R&D projects executed at
the University, apparatus base and possibilities of cooperation. It is a meeting place for researchers and entrepreneurs. The CITT undertaking have been many times praised by
the National Centre for Research and Development (NCRD), which resulted in awarding the Centre additional financing to intensify the process of technology transfer (within
such programmes as, for instance, Kreator Innowacyjności [Innovation Wizard], Patent Plus, Spin-Tech).

Short Description
ETTBio (Effective Technology Transfer in Biotechnology) aims to identify, exchange and share good practices enabling successful and effective technology transfer in
biotechnology.
ETTBio addresses the challenging issue of untapped economic potential of research institutes and universities as a source of innovation and, hence, efficient regional economic
development. The project focuses on biotechnology as the key sector, the key enabling technology in 21st century Europe. The sector ha
s very specific characteristics, which have a significant impact on a successful design of the technology transfer process. The potential of biotechnology is, however, hindered by
lack of experience and deficiencies in existing policies.
ETTBio tackles such deficiencies. The project aims to identify, exchange and share good practices enabling successful and effective technology transfer in biotechnology, and
improve local and regional policies accordingly. Improved policies can then lead to a higher number of new companies, creation of new jobs, higher tax income, as well as an
increase in the regional innovative capacity and economic performance.
In order to achieve that goal, 10 project partners from 7 Member States collect and analyse good practices in biotechnology transfers, exchange know-how on them, adapt
selected good practices to their regional contexts, and develop regional implementation plans for good practice transfer.
The project benefits from heterogeneous character of the partners: in terms of geography; level of experience in policies on technology transfer in the biotechnology sector;
and link to direct policy-making. Diversity of the partnership makes gathering of all the relevant information on the subject possible. Eventually, the partners use their findings
for concrete policy actions.
The project is co-financed by the European Union (ERDF – European Regional Development Fund) and made possible by the INTERREG IVC Programme. The project is running
from 1st January 2012 until 31st December 2014 with a total budget of 2.2 million Euro. The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European
Union’s Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the
environment and risk prevention. EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for
regional policy-makers.

development of new methods and novel drugs for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological diseases such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, addiction, Parkinson’s
disease, learning and memory dysfunctions. The main goal of the above efforts is to improve the efficacy of pharmacological treatment, investigation of pathological
mechanisms, analysis of psychiatric drugs action in animal models of human diseases. The changes induced by drugs are tested at levels of: receptor binding, second
messengers, release and metabolism of biogenic amines, behavioral responses, receptor’s density and localization, protein kinases, genes’ expression and cytokines activity.
The Institute has the status of Centre of Excellence in Neuropsychopharmacology FRAM as well as is a member of Consortium (with Jagiellonian University Medical College)
which has been awarded by Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education with the status of Leading National Research Center KNOW 2012- 2017 in medical sciences.
Currently, one of IP PAS priorities is the implementation of translational medicine in the field of psychopharmacology and the conversion of scientific discovery into real human
health improvement. In this direction a number of initiatives are taken to bring together research scientists and partners from industry to speed up the translation of medical
advances from the laboratory to clinical practice. The subject of the offer is a group of mixed dopamine and serotonin modulators. Compounds may be regarded as drug
candidates for the treatment of schizophrenia symptoms and cognitive impairment. Key facts: - Lead structures classified as multimodal agents (serotonin, dopamine receptors
ligands) - Lead structures display anti-psychotic, pro-cognitive and pro-social efficacy; the latter suggesting favorable effects on negative symptoms of psychoses Uncomplicated synthesis In vitro testing: - Compounds display high affinity for dopaminergic D2 and D3 receptors and serotoninergic 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, 5-HT6, 5-HT7 receptors;
they were mostly classified as D2, 5-HT2A antagonists - Compounds have no affinity for M1, H1 lowering the risk of side effects related to cholinergic-, histaminergic- activity Lead structures are brain penetrant - Lead structures display acceptable CYP interaction, no toxicity (hERG) In vivo testing: - Favorable profile in tests predictive of anti-psychotic
activity: PCP-induced hyperactivity, conditioned avoidance response (CAR), prepulse inhibition (PPI), social interaction - Pro-cognitive efficacy in the novel object recognition
(NOR) test, attentional set shifting (ASST), and others suggesting an enhancement of prefrontal flexibility disturbed in schizophrenia - Activity was confirmed following oral
administration - Lead structures don’t affect ECG in guinea pigs and show lack of cardiovascular effects in rats, suggesting the lack of cardio-toxicity

Short Description
NanoVelos is a biotechnological start-up set up by Professor Tomasz Ciach from the Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering and by
Polish-Israeli VC fund GIZA Polish Ventures. NanoVelos is developing a unique drug delivery platform made of polysaccharide nanoparticles for anticancer drugs delivery.
NanoVelos nanoparticles provide precise drug delivery with fully controlled release. As research showed application of known anticancer drugs encapsulated in NanoVelos
nanoparticles radically improves therapy efficiency and decrease side effects.
TECHNOLOGY
The production process is based on the polysaccharide chains self-assembly phenomenon without use of any toxic materials or metal particles. It allows to form the
nanometrical sphere with polysaccharide frame outside and all drug molecules inside.
ADVANTAGES
The NanoVelos' particles are fully biodegradable. In comparison to currently known and investigated solutions are stable, can circulate in the vascular system for a long time
and does not cause blood plasma protein aggregation. The particle is in a form of hydrogel which prevents interactions with proteins and inflammatory system response.
The main competitive advantage of the NanoVelos technology is utilization of Warburg effect for targeted anticancer therapy. Cancer cells in comparison to original cells have
about 200 times higher demand for glucose. NanoVelos particles outside layer is made of polysaccharide (the drug is encapsulated inside particle) which makes them an
"attractive" source of energy for cancer. By the Warburg effect utilization the cancer cells are actively targeted by NanoVelos nanoparticles carrying anticancer drugs inside.
What’s more, the NanoVelos nanoparticles structure allows significantly reduce anticancer therapy side effects. Fast drug release is possible only after getting to the targeted
cancer cell.
APPLICATIONS
NanoVelos drug delivery platform dedicated to anticancer drugs targeted delivery. The NanoVelos first product is doxorubicin encapsulated in NanoVelos nanoparticles. As in
vivo trials proved the application of NanoVelos technology for doxorubicin administration improves its accumulation in tumour by over 5 times with almost no side effects
comparing to the classical doxorubicin therapy.

Pure Biologics has commercialized technologically-advanced platforms for recombinant protein production and purification, as well as proprietary methods for the selection of
recombinant antibodies, for biomedical and diagnostic use. The company’s technologies are supported by extensive R&D activities and the unique in-house expertise and
know-how of the company.
PureSelect™ - A human recombinant monoclonal antibody selection platform against custom molecular targets, including whole cells. Currently, most antibodies used in
biomedical research and biotherapeutic applications are obtained by in vivo immunization of animals and subsequent selection utilizing hybridoma screening technology. The
antibodies obtained in this way need to be further ‘humanized’ in order to be safely used in clinical studies. Our technology allows for in vitro selection of high-affinity human
recombinant antibodies against practically any custom antigen, including whole-cell immunization, without the need for subsequent humanization. Finally, the selected
antibody fragments can be converted (using recombinant DNA technology) into the other antibody formats, including: full IgG molecule, Fab or scFv dimer, and further
chemically functionalized to give rise to a drug lead candidate, for example, an antibody drug conjugate (ADC), or molecular diagnostic tool, such as a fluorescent labeled
probe.
PurePerformance™ - A recombinant protein production capability that delivers high bioequivalence. The company provides a complete gene-to-protein service. Starting from
sequence optimization and vector construction, through biomass production to delivering pure protein products.
PureFold™ - Pure Biologics has a proven track-record for successfully producing proteins with high bioequivalence. Additionally, it offers its own high-throughput screening
platform utilizing proprietary conditions for successful refolding of proteins from inclusion bodies, to give rise to biologically active macromolecules.
PureAnalytics™ - As part of the company’s focus on product quality and biological function, Pure Biologics offers a comprehensive range of bioanalytical protein
characterization methods, including MS, MS/MS, DLS, CD, SEC, DSC, Biacore/SPR and ELISA. The company is therefore uniquely positioned to be able to offer its clients an
unparalleled service with respect to bioequivalence testing and biophysical characterization.
PureCD™ - companion diagnostics. Pure Biologics is focusing its activities on helping clients take advantage of the FDA-driven approach to support co-development of
companion diagnostics alongside the R&D of novel pharmaceutical and biotherapeutics.
Internal R&D
-Development of a diagnostic screening test for early detection of selected cancers using serum-derived microRNA as biomarkers
-Development of antibody-based diagnostics of urological cancers
-Development of diagnostic tests for veterinary medicine
What business partners are we seeking?
-Pharmaceutical and biotech companies with R&D programs on biologics and innovative drug development, interested either in developing or producing new recombinant
proteins as therapeutics or as companion diagnostics to their small molecule or bio-therapeutics;
-Research-intense SMEs and Academic labs developing or utilizing, recombinant proteins or antibodies
-Entities working on assay development (e.g. for diagnostic tests) seeking custom solutions involving proteins/antibodies, interaction studies, process optimization
-Collaborative industrial and academic partners to participate in both large national and international R&D projects (e.g. EU Horizon 2020 framework)
-Possibilities of collaborative business portfolio development with other SMEs, particularly within the EU, as well as globally.

External partners:
Anna Agnieszka Klimczak M.Sc. and Prof. Janusz Szemraj – cytotoxicity, Medical University of Lodz
Piotr Rychter Ph.D. and Robert Biczak Ph.D. – phytotoxicity, Jan Długosz University in Czestochowa
The project concerns the studies on the synthesis and biological properties of a series of furan and thiophene derivatives bearing aminophosphonic or azomethine moiety.
These biological properties constitute the most important part of the project and consists of investigating in vitro cytotoxicity of synthesized compounds towards various cancer
cell lines. Two compounds were found to have quite interesting cytotoxicties, one of them, against human squamous esophagus cancer cell lines and the mechanism of this
cytotoxicity was established to be based on apoptosis. Studies on control human “healthy” cell lines demonstrated the lack of cytotoxicity towards “healthy” cells. The second
compound was effective against human colon cancer. Whilst the realization of the project, SAR studies are performed in order to design the compounds demonstrating higher
cytotoxicity with neutral action to control cells.
The second part of the project concerns studies on phytotoxic properties of aminophosphonic or azomethine derivatives of furan and thiophene in order to design compounds,
which may be applied in future as herbicides or plan protection agents. The future study includes the a pplication of biodegradable polymers for slow liberation of agents of
interest.
The project is realized in cooperation between the Department of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, the University of Łódź and several partners from Poland. The project
is managed in the Department of Organic Chemistry and compounds are synthesized in the Department. The Faculty and Department is equipped enough to conduct typical
synthetic studies (synthetic labs, NMR and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry). Cytotoxicity is investigated in the Department of Cytogenetics, Faculty of Biology and
Environmental Protection, University of Łódź and in the Department of Medicinal Biochemistry, Medical University of Łódź, while phytotoxic properties of studied compounds
are investigated in the Institute of Chemistry, Environmental Protection and Biotechnology, Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa.
