lisbon, portugal - Semester at Sea
LISBON, PORTUGAL
Arrive: 0800 Wednesday, 19 September
Onboard: 2300 Friday, 21 September
Brief Overview: During the Age of
Discovery, the Portuguese people took
to the sea and colonized much of
Africa and South America between
1325 and 1700. The country’s rugged
coastline, scenic views and city
monuments remind visitors of this
nautical heritage. The maze-like
narrow streets and alleys of the
Alfama area of Lisbon is a perfect
place to the start a city-wide
Scavenger Hunt that will lead to the
discover of many amazing sights,
including the Jeronimos Monastery in
Belem. Visitors to Lisbon will quickly
notice that the Portuguese “canvas”
of choice for centuries has been tile
painting. Beautiful murals adorn the sides of common buildings, churches and museums alike. The
traditional music of Fado can be heard and enjoyed in restaurants and clubs at night. Nature lovers will enjoy
bird watching at the Tagus Bird Santuary, exploring the lush gardens at Nation’s Park, Buçaco (overnight),
and the very modern Oceanarium. Soccer enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the Benfica Stadium and a taste of
typical Portuguese cuisine.
Out of town: The southern beaches of the Algarve are alluring and invite visitors to soak up the sun or to try
their hand at fishing. Also, consider the nearby destination of Sintra, a favorite retreat of Lord Byron, and the
Palace of Pena. If you want to go a little deeper into the country, head to the lovely Oporto Valley. The Roman
Ruins at Conimbrigada were highly praised by previous SAS visitors.

Day 1: (L)
Your comfortable coach will take you to visit Oporto. Enjoy a panoramic tour of the city passing
the scenic Douro River mouth, called “Foz”, the Clérigos tower and the City Hall located at
Avenida dos Aliados. At Vila Nova de Gaia, you will have the opportunity to visit one of the
wineries that produces the world-famous port and learn about its production. The discovery of
Port wine dates from the 17th century when British merchants keen to build up trade with
Portugal fortified the wine of Douro with brandy to prevent it from turning sour while in transit.
It was found that the stronger and sweeter the wine, the better flavor it acquired. Over the
years, methods of maturing and blending were refined and continue today in the port lodges.
You will continue to Vila Real, where you will have some time to stroll around. From here it is a quick drive to Peso da Regua.
The wine valleys of the Douro and its tributaries provide some of the most spectacular scenery in Portugal. Your last stop of
the day will be at Quinta da Pacheca where you will take guided tour.
Day 2: (B, L)
After breakfast you will board a Douro cruise for a four hour river tour of the Douro Valley. You will then board your coach at
Castelo de Paiva to return to Lisbon.
Reminder: No passenger is permitted to bring wine aboard the ship, not even as a gift.

DISCOVER LISBON – CITY ORIENTATION
Half-day
Lisbon is a city that inspires poetry and
creates its own mythology; Camões, in
his great Portuguese epic The Lusiadas,
described it as "Princess of the
World…before whom even the Ocean
Bows." You will head to the Belém area
where you will star by visiting the
Jeronimos Monastery. This monument
was built in the 16th century to
commemorate Vasco da Gama's
successful return from India. Continue to the interesting Maritime Museum, just
next door. This important museum celebrates Portugal's domination of the seas
and houses model ships from the Age of Discovery onward.

was built in 1515 as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor, it was the
starting point for many of the voyages of discovery, and for the sailors it was the last
sight of their homeland. The Monument to Discoveries was built in 1960 to
commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. It
depicts a three-sailed ship ready to depart.

THE ART OF TILES PAINTING
Many countries display their heritage in
museums. Portugal's national treasures are
colorful, hand-painted tiles – azulejos – that
adorn homes, buildings, palaces, churches
and even subway stations. Dating from the
15th century, the blue and white or multicolored tiles are a storybook of the country’s
artistic provenance from former times to
present day.

COIMBRA, ROMAN RUINS AT CONIMBRIGA, & BUÇACO
The Roman Ruins of Conimbriga, situated on a triangular spur bordered by two
deep and narrow valleys, are among the finest in the Iberian Peninsula.
Conimbriga was Celtic city in the Iron Age. The present ruins, however, are those
of a Roman town situated on either side of an important road which connected
Lisbon and Braga; it was founded in the first century and remained prosperous
over a long period. Buçaco National Park is the country’s most revered woodland
and the site of Napoleon’s first significant defeat during the Peninsular War. Over
700 species of trees, many of them introduced from other countries, flourish
through the forest. The royal palace stands in the heart of the forest, now a hotel
and summer retreat for royalty.

da Rainha and Estremoz). The tour ends with the visit of the church belonging to an old convent that burned and gave its
ground to the museum. It was decorated with glazed tiles and gilded carved wood.

specifically created to protect wintering, passage and breeding populations of aquatic birds.
You will be able to observe a quite extraordinary range of birds, from Flamingo to Black-shouldered Kite and Squacco Heron to
Little Bustard. Nature seems especially close here, because of the unique age-old relationship between agriculture and
the land. Enormous, powerful black bulls abound, lazing under cork oaks, while the ecological balance created over centuries
has ensured a wide biodiversity. The range of lichens on cork is both unique and remarkable. Many wild mammals
are common, especially the Egyptian mongoose, which is regularly seen, moving in family groups. The places visited include
special habitats: intertidal mudflats, salt marshes, salt pans, rice fields, reed beds, cork oak woodlands and wide steppelike pastures.

Portuguese writers, Eça de Queirós born in
None
1845, considered the father of modern novelism in Portugal, with his caricatures
of Portuguese society. In the late 19th century, he wrote “Mistérios da Estrada de Sintra” in cooperation with a fellow writer. It
was first published as a series of anonymous letters centered in a plot of mystery and intrigue that takes place between Lisbon
and Sintra. “Os Maias”, considered by most as Queirós’ masterpiece, combining a perplexing theme with a satirical portrayal of
Portuguese society (mostly aristocracy). “A Cidade e as Serras”, focuses on the differences between city and countryside,
describing the bustle life in Paris and the quiet life in Tormes (his hometown).
Start the walking tour, following the steps of characters in “Os Maias”, on their way
through the idyllic town. The walking tour will start near Sintra’s National, Palace, from
where one can also admire the Moorish Castle firmly located at the top of a hill. From
the Palace’s Square, one will proceed upwards, heading to Quinta da Regaleira. This
Quinta once owned by a wealthy Portuguese, combine’s neo-Gothic, Romanic and neoManueline influences. From here the walk will continue to Lawrence’s hotel, the first
hotel in the Iberian Peninsula and ending at Seteais built in the 18th century by a
Dutch consul and nowadays a deluxe hotel.
Before returning to Lisbon, there will a pause for a pastry tasting at Lawrence’s Hotel as well as some leisure time to stroll
around the charming alleys of Sintra.
Leave Sintra and head toward Queluz, the site chosen for the royal residence at the end of the 18 th century. Queluz Palace is
known for its 17th and 18th century decoration. The pieces displayed in the palace and the gardens and facades showing a
French influence, will give you a good idea of court life during those times. Return to the ship.
