MAIN ATTRACTIONS
Quartet
Main Attractions
What main films will play at the
County? This section lists the Main
Attractions that we intend to play in the
coming weeks. Additional unlisted films
will also become available. This list is
only an educated guess, though, since
film release plans often change.
When will these main films play?
Scheduling our Main Attractions is weekto-week. On Monday, we decide what
main films will play starting that Friday.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we set the
showtimes for the upcoming week and
then update our website and telephone
hotline. We also send out a weekly email
(which you can receive by signing up
at our website). Sometimes, we book
a main film a few weeks in advance,
which we post on our website’s “Coming
Attractions” section.
For our latest Main Attractions plans,
visit: CountyTheater.org (Or call our
hotline at 215 345 6789.)
Hitchcock
USA - Sacha Gervasi – 1 hr 38 min
HITCHCOCK is a drama about filmmaker
Alfred Hitchcock that takes place during
the making of his movie Psycho. Anthony
Hopkins is completely convincing as the
iconic director and Helen Mirren is
wonderfully acerbic as his
underappreciated wife and working
partner. Featuring superb supporting
performances from Scarlett Johansson
(as Janet Leigh), Jessica Biel, James
D’Arcy, and Toni Collette.
Hyde Park on Hudson
USA - Roger Michell - 1 hr 37 min
This amusing drama is set in June of
1939, at President Roosevelt’s country
estate in Hyde Park. King George makes
a visit to plead for America’s support in
WWII, but international affairs must be
juggled with the complexities of FDR’s
domestic life. Bill Murray plays FDR and
brings his character alive with humor,
intelligence and a sense of confident
composure that seem entirely credible, as
well as very entertaining. Laura Linney is
likewise delightful as Franklin’s cousin and
intimate friend.
Amour
France - Michael Haneke - 2 hr 7 min
w/subtitles
AMOUR is a sober, gorgeously directed
portrait of an elderly couple facing the
terrifying questions of life and death.
Georges and Anne are in their eighties.
They are cultivated, retired music
teachers, living in Paris. When Anne
suffers a stroke, the couple’s bond of
love is severely tested. With Jean-Louis
Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.
MAIN ATTRACTIONS
Anna Karenina
Quartet
The Impossible
A Royal Affair
Rust and Bone
Limited Engagements
UK – Joe Wright - 2 hr 10 min
ANNA KARENINA is the third
collaboration between acclaimed actress
Keira Knightley and director Joe Wright
(the other two being Pride & Prejudice
and Atonement). This new effort is a bold,
theatrical vision of Tolstoy’s epic novel.
Set in 19th-century Russia, a married
aristocrat enters into a life-altering
affair. The movie features beautiful
cinematography, stunning set design, and
a script by Tom Stoppard. With Jude Law
and Matthew MacFayden.
Denmark - Nikolaj Arcel - 2 hr 18 min
w/subtitles
This sensational period drama from
Denmark recounts the illicit romance
between a young Queen and her royal
physician. Set in the 1770s, A ROYAL
AFFAIR captures the sense of the
Enlightenment, which is percolating
through Europe, and delivers a wellcrafted fiction. An intelligent, realistic
costume drama.
UK - Dustin Hoffman - 1 hr 35 min
This charming film tells the story of
opera singers who reside in a retirement
home for classical musicians. Each year,
they arrange a concert to raise funds for
their home. This year, however, rivalries
reappear and plans begin to fall apart.
With wonderful performances from Tom
Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Maggie Smith
and Michael Gambon, the theme of
aging is explored with grace and humor.
This is the first directorial effort of Dustin
Hoffman.
France - Jacques Audiard - 1 hr 55 min
w/subtitles
A tender, yet unsentimental love story
between an injured woman who is
confined to a wheel chair and a rough
boxer who helps her gain new strength.
RUST AND BONE beautifully blends a
direct, raw naturalism with classical
narrative filmmaking. This moving followup to Audiard’s A Prophet stars French
siren Marion Cotillard and Bullhead
breakout-star Matthias Schoenaerts.
C OUNTYT HEATER.ORG
Australia - J.A. Bayona - 1 hr 47 min
THE IMPOSSIBLE is about a family
caught in the Southeast Asia tsunami of
2004, which is presented in a convincing
and terrifying detail. Part of the appeal
of this affecting film is that it puts you
right in the moment at every stage,
using authentic locations and tsunami
survivors to hammer home the reality
of this disaster. Naomi Watts and Ewan
McGregor do some of their best work ever,
as they try to find each other and their
three young boys.
We try to play each of our Main
Attractions films for a full multi-week
run. Sometimes, however, we are unable
to play a film in a timely or complete
way, and it becomes a question of either
squeezing it in or not playing it at all. We
then often schedule that film for a couple
of mid-week screenings, called Limited
Engagements. Make sure that you sign
up for our weekly email blast, so that
you don’t miss these short, last-chance
screenings.

The National Theatre, London
John Lithgow takes the title role in this fast,
brilliantly plotted farce set in Victorian London.
A respectable magistrate finds himself caught
up in a series of scandalous events that almost
cause his disgrace. High-spirited carousing
leads to outrageous mishap, culminating in
proceedings in court the next day.
Captured LIVE on March 21, 2013 from
The National Theatre, London
Britain’s celebrated comic playwright, Alan
Bennett (The History Boys, The Habit of Art),
debuts his hilarious new play. Nicholas Hytner
directs. People spoil things; there are so many
of them and the last thing one wants is them
traipsing through one’s house. But with the park
a jungle and a bath on the billiard table, what
is one to do?

The National Theatre, London
James Graham’s biting and energetic new play
strips politics down to the bone, to the practical
realities behind the scenes. Set in 1974, when
the UK faced an economic crisis and a hung
parliament, THIS HOUSE follows a diverse and
conflicting chorus of MPs as they battle and
maneuver.
