When I first heard the play and music at the Kennedy Center’s New Visions/New Voices workshop two years ago, I knew right away that I wanted to produce it at Seattle Children’s Theatre. The book, written by Timothy Allen McDonald, really honors Roald Dahl’s beloved story. McDonald worked closely with Dahl’s literary estate, and took care to preserve the quirky essence of the original story in his adaptation. There’s also a truly exciting musical score by the Tony-nominated song-writing team, Justin Paul and Benj Pasek. The sophisticated harmonies require great voices, and I’m thrilled with our cast. Carey Wong, the set designer, started working last February. As you can imagine, creating a giant flying peach takes some doing, but there’s more – seagulls, sharks, the Empire State Building – everywhere you look, there’s stage magic happening. And then there’s the challenge of making the insects come alive, first as puppets and then as actors. Working with designer Annett Mateo, we chose to use puppets for the more realistic scenes in which James first meets the insects. Later, in the fantastical world of the giant peach, we have actors playing the insects in costumes created by Cathy Hunt that keep the insects’ signature qualities but allow the freedom to sing and dance, climb and move. We chose to leave the actors’ faces uncovered to allow them greater expressiveness. After all, these bugs have personality! Did you know that the last time I counted Seattle had 51 “holiday” shows? It’s really a challenge to offer something special for you in such a crowded field, but I think we’ve done it with James and the Giant Peach. Children will see themselves as James, a young boy who goes from feeling alone and unloved to becoming a hero, finding unexpected strength, resilience and friendship in the company of the not-exactly-normal characters who need his help. Together in their adventure as the crew of the Giant Peach, the boy and the insects learn that acceptance and love are their best protection. Now that’s a heart-lifting theme for the holidays in every tradition. Linda Hartzell Artistic Director Synopsis The story begins as James Henry Trotter loses his parents in an accident (involving a hungry rhino from the London Zoo). To further his misfortune, James has only two surviving relatives – his atrocious, pick-pocketing aunts Spiker and Sponge. Though not a fan of children, the miserly aunts welcome James’ arrival as a source of income and free labor. When Spiker and Sponge order him to chop down a fruit tree, James uncovers a book of magic potions. James mixes up a potion, accidentally drops it by the tree and a tremendous peach grows. The aunts see this novelty as yet another money grab and start receiving celebrity status from the peach. Ordered to guard the peach, James spies a door knob and enters the fruit where he finds an interesting cast of human-sized insects (many who want to eat him). Personalities collide with the pessimistic and threatening Centipede, the more proper Ladybug, Grasshopper, Spider and Earthworm. As the group juggles for space and argues, the peach falls off the tree and rolls into the ocean. At sea, the group is launched on an epic adventure where they must learn to work together and be resourceful. James leads the eclectic group with clever and creative problem-solving. For example, when hungry, they nibble away at the peach (while careful to keep it afloat). To escape sharks, they lasso spider rope around seagull necks to lift themselves out of the ocean and harm’s way. Meanwhile, fearing retribution from the cash advances they received for peach publicity that never came to fruition, the aunts flee on a first-class cruise to New York. Both groups survive their journey and things come to a head when James reunites with his aunts in New York. Lighting design credits include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Austin’s Zach Theatre), The Clean House and Seminar (Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company), and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged, A Christmas Carol, and Two Gentlemen of Verona (Colorado Shakespeare Festival). Rachel earned her Master of Fine Arts in lighting design at The University of Texas at Austin. Chris R. Walker (Sound Designer) is very happy to be returning for his twelfth season as resident sound designer at SCT. He’s also ecstatic that his two daughters are able to see so many great plays right where he works. It’s a good job for the whole family! In Seattle, he has designed at Seattle Rep, ACT, the 5th Ave., and Intiman. Nationally, he’s designed in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, Boston, Chicago, and New York. Chris holds a BA in Classical Piano Performance from Cornish College. Geoffrey Alm (Fight Choreographer) has worked with SCT since 1988, most recently fight directing for A Single Shard and Robin Hood. Geof has choreographed nationally at The Shakespeare Theatre, Washington DC; The Huntington, Boston; McCarter Theatre, New Jersey; Kansas City Rep; Arizona Theatre Company; Shakespeare Santa Cruz; and The Old Globe, San Diego. Locally, his work has been seen at Seattle Opera, Intiman, and The 5th Ave. He teaches stage fighting in the MFA program at the UW, Cornish, Freehold Theatre Lab, and UPS. Mr. Alm is a fight master with the Society of American Fight Directors. Lara Paxton (Aerial Arts Coach) is a crossdisciplinary performance artist whose pieces incorporate over-the-top costuming and character work with elements of circus, music, and dance. In 1998 she founded Circus Contraption and served as artistic director for its 11-year lifespan. An offshoot of this project, a six-woman aerial girl gang called the Aerialistas, quickly established itself as a local favorite. In 2010 the troupe made its international debut in Madrid’s prestigious Teatro Circo Price. This was followed by multiple engagements in German varieté theaters. Lara has also performed nationally and internationally with her solo works, in particular her signature mermaid on aerial anchor. Annett Mateo (Puppet Designer/Coach) believes just about anything can be a puppet! She builds all kinds of puppets large and small out of all kinds of materials. Besides Seattle Children’s Theatre, her puppets have recently been at Chicago Children’s Theatre, Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis and Freehold Theatre. It was much fun to have built the puppets for the Mudgarden Experience at the Experience Music Project as part of the visiting Jim Henson Exhibit, and for various other theatres and festivals in the region. Annett is thrilled to be in her eleventh season designing and building puppets at the Seattle Children’s Theater after having built puppets with our beloved Douglas Paasch, who originally designed many of the puppets at SCT. Alyssa Keene (Dialect Coach) is pleased to be returning to SCT for an old childhood favorite. Past shows at SCT include Pippi Longstocking, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Seussical, The Brementown Musicians, Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business, Frog and Toad, and Busytown. Recent Seattle credits include The Wild Party (Sound Theatre Company), Team of Heroes (Annex), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Seattle Public), and Reckless (Theater Schmeater). Alyssa is also a dialect coach for many local theatres, and a voice and speech teacher for Cornish College of the Arts, SCT, The 5th Avenue, and Jackstraw Studios. She is currently engaged in voice studies at the Roy Hart Theatre in Thoiras, France. Michael Wellborn (Production Manager) is in his seventh season working with the amazing staff and guest artists of SCT. Prior to joining SCT, Michael was on the faculty of the University of Washington Dance Program. As a lighting designer for over 30 years, his work has been seen around the world, including 25 productions here at SCT. Michael K. Hase (Technical Director) is in the midst of his 19th year at SCT. The life of Roald Dahl Roald Dahl was born September 13, 1916, in Llandaff, South Wales, United Kingdom, to Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood summers visiting his grandparents in Oslo, Norway. He was a mischievous child, full of energy, and from an early age he proved himself skilled at finding trouble. His earliest memory was of pedaling to school at a very fast speed on his tricycle, with his two sisters struggling to keep up as he whizzed around curves on two wheels. Dahl’s father died when Roald was four years old. His mother followed her late husband’s wish that Dahl be sent to English schools. Dahl first attended Llandaff Cathedral School, where he embarked on a series of unfortunate adventures. After he and several other students were severely beaten by the principal for placing a dead mouse in a storekeeper’s candy jar, Dahl’s mother moved him to St. Peter’s Boarding School and later to Repton, an excellent private school. Dahl would later describe his school years as “days of horrors” filled with “rules, rules and still more rules that had to be obeyed,” which inspired much of his fiction. Though not a good student, his mother nevertheless offered him the option of attending Oxford or Cambridge University when he finished school. His reply was, “No, thank you. I want to go straight from school to work for a company that will send me to wonderful faraway places like Africa or China.” After graduating from Repton, Dahl took a position with the Shell Oil Company in Tanganyika (now Tanzania), in Africa. In 1939 he joined a British Royal Air Force training squadron in Nairobi, Kenya, and served as a fighter pilot during World War II. Dahl suffered severe head injuries in a plane crash near Alexandria, Egypt. After he recovered, the Royal Air Force sent him to Washington, D.C., to be an assistant air attaché (a technical expert who advises government representatives). There he met the English author C. S. Forester who asked him to write an article about his wartime experiences for a newspaper. Soon his stories were appearing in many magazines. Dahl told the New York Times Book Review that “as I went on, the stories became less and less realistic and more fantastic. But becoming a writer was pure fluke. Without being asked to, I doubt if I’d ever have thought of it.” In 1943 he wrote his first children’s book, The Gremlins, which was originally intended to be made into an animated film by Walt Disney. The film was not made and Dahl turned to writing adult fiction. Through the 1940s and into the 1950s Dahl continued as a short story writer for adults, establishing his reputation as a writer of deathly tales with unexpected twists. His stories earned him three Edgar Allan Poe Awards from the Mystery Writers of America. In 1953 Dahl married Hollywood actress Patricia Neal. The marriage lasted 30 years and produced five children. As soon as the children were old enough, Dahl began making up stories for them each night before they went to bed. His daughter Ophelia recalled: “Every evening after my sister Lucy and I had gone to bed, my father would walk slowly up the stairs, his bones creaking louder than the staircase, to tell us a story. I can see him now, leaning against the wall of our bedroom with his hands in his pockets looking into the distance, reaching into his imagination. It was here, in our bedroom, that he began telling many of the stories that later became the books you know.” His career as a children’s writer began seriously with the publication of James and the Giant Peach in 1961. One way that Dahl delighted his readers was to take often vicious revenge on cruel adults who had harmed children, as in James and the Giant Peach and Matilda. Many critics have objected to the rough treatment of adults. However, Dahl explained in the New York Times Book Review that the children who wrote to him always “pick out the most gruesome events as the favorite parts of the books.… They don’t relate it to life. They enjoy the fantasy.” He also said that his “nastiness” was payback. “Beastly people must be punished.” Looking back on his years as a writer in Boy: Tales of Childhood, Dahl contended that “two hours of writing fiction leaves this particular writer absolutely drained. For those two hours he has been miles away, he has been somewhere else, in a different place with totally different people, and the effort of swimming back into normal surroundings is very great. It is almost a shock.… A person is a fool to become a writer. His only [reward] is absolute freedom. He has no master except his own soul, and that, I am sure, is why he does it.” Over his career, Dahl wrote 19 children’s books, nine short story collections and several television and movie scripts. He worked from a tiny shed in the garden of the home he shared with his second wife, Liccy. He couldn’t type and always used a pencil to write his stories—stories that continue to thrill millions of children throughout the world. Roald Dahl died in Oxford, England, on November 23, 1990.
