„Zicke, Zacke, Zicke Zacke, Hoi, Hoi, Hoi“. President’s Report Kirchweihfest was once again a very beautiful celebration. All our dance groups did an amazing job, first by serving us our meals and also by cleaning up after we ate. Secondly, they all performed their dances very beautifully and professionally and we are proud of you. A big thank you to all of you. Right after Kirchweih on Tuesday, September 14th, we held our Fall German Concert. Feature performers were the Sandlers, Danny Bach and Christina Schumann. I think we can say it was a very enjoyable evening. I believe all three stars gave us full value of their performance for a nominal admission price. It truly was a beautiful evening. A special thank you to Monica Anstett and her group of volunteers who gave of their time to decorate our tables, help with serving the cake and coffee and looking after our thirst by tending our bar. A thank you also to Rick, our kitchen chef, for coming in on short notice to prepare a meal for our special guests. Summer is coming to an end and fall is fast approaching, and with that Oktoberfest is here. Our tickets sales are encouraging and bands are booked and our ladies, with some help from our men, have finished with their task of making our famous cabbage rolls. Yes, all three thousand of them. THANK YOU ladies and gentlemen, it was great working with you and our club is very fortunate and appreciative to have your help for this task. I am looking forward to the actual Oktoberfest Celebrations and I am most certainly looking forward to greeting you, our members, and many of our guests here at the Schwaben Club. “Zicke, Zacke, Zicke Zacke, Hoi, Hoi, Hoi”. You remember it well from last year, and there it is again. Yup, it must be Kirchweih we’re celebrating, because everywhere you go, you can smell Rosemary. On September 11, 2010, the Schwaben Club celebrated its annual Kirchweih and it was wonderful again. The Frauengruppe once again took the lead role in organizing the event, and they did a fantastic job. As soon as you walked in the door, ladies from the Frauengruppe were there to pin you Rosemary corsage on, and help you find your table. After a brief welcome and history lesson from the co-MC Peter Speckner, it was dinner time. And the kitchen did great again. The salad was good, and the schnitzel was delicious. The potatoes and vegetables were perfect sides. And a new dessert was on the menu this time Raspberry Crème Torte. Heavenly! After dinner, the first two performances came on to our enjoyment. The Kindergruppe lead off – they are absolutely adorable every time they go 3 4 onto the floor. After they finished and we had a quick welcome from the President, it was straight to the Jugendgruppe. They dazzled us as well. I swear both groups are larger than the last time we saw them, which is wonderful to see. Then came the main event for the evening – the Grand March and the auction of the Rosemary bush. With music supplied by the Golden Keys, everyone marched around the hall, showing off the final prize for all to see. Then Mary Hild took centre stage with the microphone, and started the auction. Volunteers flooded the hall with wine bottles and baskets to collect donations and reward bidders. After the auction, final performances by the Donau Dancers and Schwaben Dancers capped off the program for the evening. The Donau Dancers were very entertaining with their program, while the Schwaben Dancers showcased their new dance, “Lustige Schlawiner” for the Club. The Golden Keys then took over, and guided everyone through the rest of the evening. Overall, it was a great success and an exceptionally good time. Now if I could only get the Rosemary smell out of my vest! What a wonderful evening it was! Upon arrival everyone received the customary rosemary sprigs which are tied with ribbon. A delicious schnitzel dinner, followed by Raspberry torte was enjoyed by all. As always, the dance groups were wonderful and we always appreciate the hard work that goes into their performances. The traditional Einmarsch took place with the ribbon covered Strauss. Mary Hild then started the Auction and there was much excitement as the bidding and wine drinking began. Elizabeth Resch was honored with the little Strauss and shared a dance with President Phil Neidert. A few more draws took place and then we danced and enjoyed the music of The Golden Keys. I must take a moment to extend a huge Thank You to all the members of the Frauengruppe and parents and members of the Kindergruppe for coming out and helping on Friday. The job goes faster with many hands! When this newsletter is printed our volunteers will have made 3000 cabbage rolls for Oktoberfest! It is wonderful to see such a great turn out. Thank you again. Don’t forget we need your help again for our Oktoberfest bake sale on the Sunday dur during the festival. See you all there! Both the Jugendgruppe and Kindergruppe were a pleasure to watch and everyone enjoyed the evening. We had some first time performers and would like to congratulate them and also welcome our new families to the groups: The Hill Family and The Hall Family. A big THANK YOU to all the families that helped clean up the club on Saturday, September 18th, 2010: Helga Hill, Tara Willemsen and Madison and Johanne Watchorn. Your time and hard work has made our club look fantastic! We look forward dancing during Oktoberfest and to celebrating at the Frauengruppe’s Anniversary in November! Both our groups are working hard on new dances and hope to showcase them soon! New dancers are always welcome and registration is ongoing. Yes, the German Fall Show was an excellent show. Right now, I must say that if you have never been to one of the Schwaben Club’s German Shows, you are missing a great evening. Die Sandler, a 3-man band, was the opening act. The accordion, guitar and posaune (baritone) were the perfect combination for presenting Oberkrainer tunes, German music and backing up jodling solos by the guitarist. This group has been at our Club about 3 times and they always play the most delightful music. Danny Bach was a good entertainer. He interacted with the audience through not only his topnotch singing style but also his jokes and by continued on page 9 5 Frauengrupp Frauengrupp 6 pe Kirchweih Kirchweih pe 7 Fall German Show Teutonia Club Anniversary 8 My name is Josef Groh and my wife and I attended the 75th Teutonia Club Anniversary celebration on the 11th of September, 2010. The Teutonia Club has been a member of the Dachverband der Donauschwaben of Kanada for many years. The full-house of members and guests, was entertained by the Hetzel Band. The band consists of four generations of members from the Donauschwaben heimat and I would Landestreffen 2012 hosted by OUR CLUB! The committees are now being formed to help with planning for the Schwaben Club’s big event in 2012. We need lots of volunteers to help organize this event, so that our fellow American and Canadian Schwaben Verband members will have the best time possible. Planning and logistics are starting immediately. Please leave your name with the list in the office, or email it to: [email protected] We need all the help we can get, so everyone is welcome to join! www.pillers.com Fall German Show continued from page 5 leading a parade around the hall. Danny Bach made the evening fun. Christine Schumann has the voice of an angel. It was so clear, as if it came straight off a CD. Christine presented a more low-key show with lovely ballads and songs of the Swiss Alps. Our Christmas Show is on December 14, 2010. Come out to the Club and join the happy audiences who always have a great time at our German Shows. Catherine Thompson Reporter at Large 9 Spruce-Up Saturday 10 Many thanks to those who took the time out of their extremely busy lives to help beautify this glorious Club of ours. First on the scene were Monica Anstett, Phil and Betty Neidert, Nick Lang, Jade Adam and Ed Ries. Slowly, more committed members drifted in; Lisa and young Matthew Schaadt, Tara McBride, Johanne Watchorn, Wolfgang Kahnke, Bob Foster, Joe Adam, Andrea Speckner, Magdalena Adam, Bryan Bowman and, last but not least, Bill and Heidi Oliver. A short break was taken at about 10:45 am to warm the inner soul. Later, a few met at Tim Hortons at 1:30 pm for soup and a sandwich after the morning’s grueling activities. Again, many thanks to all those that helped and for the inspirational comment by Frank Nemeth a couple of weeks ago. Hoping to see more members next time.
