THE ART AWARD FOR NEW POSITIONS
'NEW POSITIONS', ART COLOGNE’s international sponsorship programme for
young, innovative artists is supported by the German Federal Government,
Koelnmesse – the Fair organizers – and the Bundesverband Deutscher Galerien
und Kunsthändler (BVDG).
The Art Award for NEW POSITIONS is presented to the best of these young
artists. The prizewinner is given a solo show at Cologne's artothek and includes
the publication of an exhibition catalogue. The prize is made possible through
the support of Deutsche Telekom.
This year’s selection panel had chosen 14 young positions, each of whom was
allocated an additional 25 square metre area in the stands of the galleries representing them.
On Friday, April 15th, 8:00 p.m. the exhibition of last year’s awardee Sabrina Fritsch
will open at the artothek – Raum für junge Kunst Köln.

FILM COLOGNE
SPECIAL EXHIBITION FOR 50TH ART COLOGNE
For the 50th anniversary of ART COLOGNE, the FILM COLOGNE special event
presents a curated exhibition of the last five decades of moving image art in the
context of the art production of the Rhineland from the late 1960s to the present.
The five sections (1967 – 1976, 1977 – 1986, 1987 – 1996, 1997 – 2006 and
2007 – 2016) are each represented by two selected, chronologically relevant positions and enable a compact look at the special medium of moving images.
The specially developed exhibition architecture ensures that a concentrated
experience space comes into being for visitors within the context of the fair.
A separate room is dedicated to each decade. Considering the increasing importance of moving image media in the context of current global art production and
on the art market, the selection should also show present tendencies and the
future development of these special forms of artistic expression.

Award ceremony and exhibition
For the twenty-second time in annual succession, the Gesellschaft für Moderne
Kunst am Museum Ludwig is awarding the Wolfgang Hahn Prize. In 2016 the
recipient will be the artist Huang Yong Ping, who was born in China in 1954 and
has lived in Paris since 1989. With him we are honoring an artist who has since
the 1980s examined issues of politics versus culture and universality versus
individuality in intersections between Chinese and Western art, and who has
created a thoroughly autonomous oeuvre.
The Skulpturenhalle has been designed and built by the Thomas Schütte
Foundation in cooperation with RKW Architects, Düsseldorf.
Two exhibitions are planned annually (with publications), Dieter Schwarz from the
Kunstmuseum Winterthur has been invited to curate the first two exhibitions.
Close cooperations are planned with the nearby Langen Foundation and Insel
Hombroich Foundation in Neuss.

Raimund Thomas was born in 1938 in Krefeld. Already in 1961, during his study of
architecture and art history in Munich, he decided to become a gallery owner. After
several months in London, New York and Paris, he opened the GALERIE THOMAS in
the Maximilianstraße in Munich in 1964. In these years, Thomas primarily showed
and published contemporary art and is one of the 18 visionary gallery owners
who brought the Kunstmarkt Köln to life in 1967. An outlet was opened in the
Türkenstraße in 2009 with the GALERIE THOMAS MODERN.
To the present day, the expertise of the gallery with international influence extends
from modern art, German Expressionism through art after 1945 to contemporary
art. In 2014 GALERIE THOMAS celebrated its 50th anniversary and is this year
participating in the 50th ART COLOGNE as an exhibitor for the 50th time.

Marvin Gaye Chetwynd
Opening 14 April 2016, 7:00 p.m.
Marvin Gaye Chetwynd: Camshafts in the Rain
Chetwynd’s anarchic performances have been described as ‘part medieval
mystery play, part hippy art happening, part school pantomime’. Drawing
variously on the history of performance within popular culture and folk traditions
her works operate as immersive collages that have previously referenced science
fiction or puppetry, the ritualized spectacle of political demonstrations or a
carnival, musical film or the theatre of the absurd.
‘Camshafts in the Rain’ is a new commission that takes inspiration from the
history of automata and the use of clockwork mechanisms to animate public
space. Conceived as a ‘loop of continuous action’ within an ‘endless proscenium
arch’, Chetwynd’s exhibition is envisaged as a giant ‘toy’ or ‘paper’ theatre, scaling
up a form of puppetry that became popular in the 19 th century.
The performance will premiere at the exhibition opening on Monday 11th April and
be repeated as part of the ART COLOGNE VIP programme on Saturday 16th April.
The exhibition at Bonner Kunstverein is the first solo exhibition of her work in a
German institution.

Andro Wekua
Andro Wekua, born in 1977 in Georgia, has over a period of more than ten
years made some of the most mysterious contributions to more recent
contemporary art. Taking his own biography as a starting point, which has been
greatly influenced by experiences of civil war in his home country, the work of
Wekua revolves around the questions of how personal or collective memory is
constituted, of what the true content of an individual or global memory is and
what belongs to fiction, imagination and interpretation in this context. The
image creations realised by the in the meantime Berlin-based artist usually show
something frightening and uncanny, and refer to processes of the unconscious.
The foundation of Andro Wekua's work is usually provided by images gathered
from newspapers, magazines, films or photo albums, which he removes from
their original contexts and lends a new presence through a variety of processes.
This principle characterises both the paper works, drawings and paintings of the
artist, as well as his sculptures, installations and films. Regardless of the respective
medium, Wekua's works appeal directly to the emotional world of the viewer, even
when these not seldom resist a clear reading, which contributes to enhancing their
uncomfortable impact.

Alberto Burri. The Trauma of Painting
09.04. – 03.06.2016
Fernand Léger. Painting in Space
In spring of 2016, the Kunstsammlung NRW pays tribute to the work of the Italian
artist Alberto Burri (1915 – 1995), one of the most important Italian artists of the
Novecento alongside Lucio Fontana. The major retrospective Alberto Burri: The
Trauma of Painting (K21, March 5 – July 3, 2016), organized by the Guggenheim
Museum in New York, where it opens, will travel to the K21, and will feature
approximately 70 works by this forerunner of Arte Povera. “In recent art as well,
the pronounced attraction to materiality so characteristic of Burri plays an
enormous role,” comments Marion Ackermann. The Burri retrospective will be
supplemented by works by the artist’s Italian contemporaries, drawn from the
collection of the Kunstsammlung and shown in the bel etage. Burri – who served
as an army doctor – transformed his experiences as an American prisoner of war
into a powerful art that bears witness to traumatic memories. Burri turned away
from the painterly gestures of US-American Abstract Expressionism and European
Informel, creating his images using “humble” materials normally regarded as
non-artistic. Burri was highly esteemed in both the US and Germany. His work is
of special importance for the Kunstsammlung NRW as well as for the Guggenheim
Museum: the directors of each museum recognized his importance early on and
promoted him. In 1966, Werner Schmalenbach acquired Wheat (1956), a key work
by Burri, for the regional art collection.
Conquering space, everyday life
In this special anniversary year for the museum building, this exhibition casts a
new light on one of the most diverse and influential artists of modernism. Fernand
Léger (1881 – 1955), a contemporary of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, sought
to synthesize the arts in his work. He made films, created murals for private
homes as well as public buildings such as the United Nations Headquarters in New
York, and designed costumes, theater sets, and church windows.
Painting in Space is the first retrospective that focuses on Fernand Léger’s murals.
For Léger, an architectural draftsman by training, engaging with built spaces via
painting was a major concern. He developed close ties to key figures of modern
architecture around the world. Painting in Space explores the fruits of this dialog
and traces his development from the early 1920s to his death in 1955. It features
fascinating and often unexpectedly experimental projects that reflect different
types of collaboration.

(ART COLOGNE Award for NEW POSITIONS 2015 / sponsored by
Deutsche Telekom)
'NEW POSITIONS' is ART COLOGNE's international sponsorship programme
for young, innovative artists supported by the German Federal Government,
Koelnmesse – the Fair organizers – and the Bundesverband Deutscher Galerien
und Kunsthändler (BVDG).
Sabrina Fritsch, winner of the ART COLOGNE Award for NEW POSITIONS 2015,
will present at the artothek on April 2016 a selection of new, large-sized paintings.
The solo show at Cologne's “artothek – Raum für junge Kunst” is part of the award
which is made possible through the support of Deutsche Telekom.
Sabrina Fritsch convinced the jury with her handling of surfaces and textures.
Pictorially precise, she develops varnished colour spaces in contrast with dense
and yet textured material. With her paintings and prints she makes a strong and
independent statement on poetic painting.
The Von der Heydt-Museum Wuppertal is dedicating a comprehensive
retrospective exhibition to Tony Cragg, the most significant British contemporary
sculptor.
The artist‘s sculptures, drawings, and prints are exhibited, including works that
have never been on display before. Thematic displays follow the course of the
sculptor’s multifaceted artistic development, in which the variety of materials
used (including plastic, glass, works on paper, bronze, plaster, and stainless steel)
plays a significant part. The series of works that examine the relationship between
natural and synthetic forms and structures - including his Stack Sculptures,
Vessels and Cells, Early Forms, Rational Beings and his earlier wall installations in
plastic – form the other main focal point of the show.

SUSANNE PAESLER
12.02. – 22.05. 2016
Horst P. Horst: Photographer of style
Susanne Paesler (1963 – 2006) is part of a generation of artists who have bid
farewell to the modernist concept of the picture as a place of constantly renewed
aesthetic visions that outplay each other. Instead of adding a further individual
form of expression to the different kinds of handwriting and styles of the past,
their artistic work discusses the meaning of the artwork itself in a world full
of already existing images and reproducible structures. This attitude is already
documented in Paesler’s earliest works. Superficially seen, they cultivate a
geometric form language, however, pattern and choice of color still always refer
to extra-pictorial contexts. Accordingly, her paintings are sometimes reminiscent
of cheap woolen blankets, sometimes of Burlington socks – everyday objects that
serve her as a motive. Instead of following the principle of the readymade and
mounting fabric directly onto stretchers, the artist manually copies the patterns
so that art, handcraft and design enter into a fluent exchange. Based on this
strategic approach it is almost logical that Susanne Paesler dealt with the motive
of the frame – as a henceforth painted! picture border –, the trompe l’œil and
the “picture within the picture.” Her paintings are picture puzzles that withdraw
themselves from any sort of clear identification. This is especially visible in the
works made around the turn of the millennium in which she quotes the styles
of artists like Hartung and Pollock, adapting a handwriting that meanwhile has
become a pattern of Modernism itself. Kunstmuseum Bonn presents the first
overview of Susanne Paesler’s work in the Rhineland. The exhibition includes
more than 40 works from 1991 to 2006 and will be on display at SCHAUWERK
Sindelfingen after its presentation in Bonn.
The NRW-Forum, Düsseldorf, is presenting comprehensive retrospective of Horst
P. Horst. The exhibition Horst: Photographer of Style opens on February 12, 2016
and runs until May 22. German-born Horst was one of the leading photographers
of the twentieth century and remains an important influence today. The
exhibition is curated by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), London, and
presents 250 photographic works spanning 60 years. It includes iconic images
from his time as a Vogue photographer and lesser-known projects alongside
rarely seen drawings, letters, films and couture gowns. Horst was born Horst
Paul Albert Bohrmann in 1906 in Weissenfels, Germany. He studied at Hamburg
Kunstgewerbeschule before travelling to Paris in 1930 to work as an apprentice
to the architect Le Corbusier. He began his career as a photographer under the
guidance of George Hoyningen-Huene, working for Vogue from 1932 onwards.
In 1939, Horst moved to New York and in 1943 he became an American citizen,
joined the United States Army and changed his surname from Bohrmann to Horst.
After the war, he built a house in Long Island, New York and remained in America
