Excellence at the Top –
TOP 50 US Companies in Germany

A steady yet slow rebound from recession in the US coupled with
a surprisingly strong yet potentially fragile German economy allowed US
companies in Germany to see modest growth in 2011.

Tackling challenges
Germany’s technology forecast is not without its
clouds, however. US firms saw major challenges to
Germany’s status as an innovator, particularly from
India, South Korea and China. The two largest concerns
derived from Europe’s ongoing sovereign debt crisis
(84%) and from Germany’s well-known shortage of
skilled labor (77%).
Top employers in Germany
The bigger picture for American firms active in
Germany remains overwhelmingly positive: More
than 2,000 such companies conduct business here
every day, maintaining 800,000 jobs and representing
US investments of 1130 billion. This gives Germany
the densest concentration of US investment in the
world. From Ford-Werke GmbH to Caterpillar Gruppe,
Germany’s corporate landscape reflects this intensity
of investment and keeps the ground fertile for new
US firms interested in opening up shop.
On top with technology
According to a survey accompanying the rankings
that asked about the country’s position as a tech­
nology and innovation hub, top executives at member
companies widely viewed Germany as highly competitive, innovative and technologically advanced.
Germany’s reputation for inventiveness and technological adroitness stems in large part from its welleducated workforce. A majority of respondents cited
the quality and good training of German workers as
a major reason for viewing the country as a high-tech
mecca. Fifty-eight percent identified the country’s
geographic location as a boon as well. Positioned on
the doorstep of eastern Europe, Germany is ideally
situated to supply the increasingly affluent populations of its neighbors’ expanding national markets,
particularly in Poland. According to 90% of respondents, this advantageous location was bolstered by a
robust logistics and transportation network.
Using the top 50 ranking, AmCham Germany also determines the top 50 employers in Germany. In 2011,
the top 20 US employers provided jobs to more than
300,000 workers. This represented an increase over
2010, as American firms have continued to flourish
in the German market.

BUSINESS INFORMATION
his year’s AmCham Germany ranking of the top
50 US companies in Germany reflects the results of a mixed economic climate. Despite this,
the top of the list remains similar to last year: For the
fifth consecutive year, automaker Ford-Werke GmbH
ranks above the rest, with sales approaching 119 billion. ExxonMobil Central Holding GmbH climbed one
rung up the ladder to come in second, with close to
113 billion in sales. Adam Opel AG, in third place, was
close on No. 2’s heels, with revenues of 112.5 billion.
