Veränderungen im Leben manchmal einfach gut tun. Ein Wechsel vom Klima, der Aussicht,
des sozialen Umfelds, der Gerüche und Geschmäcker – das alles bereichert unsere Sinne, weckt in
uns die Neugier, Neues auszuprobieren. Veränderungen sind dann besonders bereichernd, wenn
sie auf festen Werten beruhen und alte Qualitäten
respektieren und weiterführen. In diesem Sinne
fliegt Edelweiss Sie in die abwechslungsreiche
weite Welt und wieder
zurück, ohne dabei zu vergessen, was unsere Airline
so erfolgreich macht: Zuverlässigkeit, Freundlichkeit und Pünktlichkeit.

gut. So freue ich mich, dass ich nach 12 Jahren an
der Spitze von Edelweiss nun das Ruder in die
Hände meines Nachfolgers als CEO Bernd Bauer
geben darf. Ich tue dies mit dem guten Gefühl, ein
kerngesundes Unternehmen übergeben zu können, das sich nun auf Neues freut. Ich wünsche

on their holidays? I think it’s because
making a change can simply be good for
you. A change of climate, of scenery, of social setting, the smells and tastes – it enriches our senses
and awakens our curiosity to try out something
new. Changes are especially enriching when they
are based on both solid values and respect and
build on old qualities. In this sense, Edelweiss flies
you to the varied and exciting wider world and
back, without ever forgetting what makes our airline so successful: reliability, friendliness and punctuality. Making a change in the world of business
can also be good sometimes. It is on this note,
after twelve years at the helm of Edelweiss, that I
am now handing the leadership of the company
over to my successor as CEO, Bernd Bauer. I do so
with the great feeling of handing over a very
healthy company which can now look forward to
a change. I wish Bernd all the very best in his new
role. And I would like to thank you for your many
years of trust and appreciation.

Zweimal pro Woche von Zürich direkt in die verrückteste, bunteste
und leuchtendste Stadt der Welt: Las Vegas. Das muss gefeiert
werden! Den Erstflug von Edelweiss in die amerikanische Unterhaltungsmetropole pilotierte Edelweiss-Captain Karl Kistler
höchstpersönlich. Als Passagiere hatte er viel Prominenz aus
der Schweiz dabei: Virginia Gomez alias DJ TapTap entdeckte
zusammen mit Comedian Claudio Zuccolini und Star-Köchin
Meta Hiltebrand die Unterhaltungsmetropole. Angesagt waren die
Highlights High Roller, The Neon Museum und ein Ausflug mit
den Sportkampfjets von Sky Combat Ace. Auch die kulinarische

Twice a week direct from Zurich to the craziest, most colourful
and brightest lit city in the world: Las Vegas. That’s something
to celebrate! The first flight by Edelweiss to the American
enter­tainment metropolis was personally piloted by Edelweiss
Captain Karl Kistler. His passengers included several Swiss
celebrities: Virginia Gomez, also known as DJ Tap Tap, explored
the entertainment metropolis with comedian Claudio Zuccolini
and star chef Meta Hiltebrand. The High Roller, the Neon Museum
and an excursion with the sport fighter jets from Sky Combat
Ace all proved to be popular highlights. The tourists sampled the
gastronomic side of Las Vegas as well as a host of shopping

Was wollen Sie beibehalten, was verändern?
Edelweiss ist erfolgreich und fit für die Zukunft.
Nächstes Jahr feiern wir unser 20-jähriges Jubiläum.
Ich möchte mit unserem motivierten Team die
Erfolgsgeschichte von Edelweiss weiterschreiben und
unsere Gäste aufs Neue überraschen.
Was hat Sie an Edelweiss überrascht?
Ich habe grossen Respekt, wie sich Edelweiss in den
letzten Jahren mit einem Topservice differenziert
hat, wie die Airline gewachsen ist und wie sie sich in
einem hart umkämpften Markt behauptet hat.
Wohin fliegen Sie am liebsten in die Ferien?
Ich liebe es, mit meiner Familie neue Länder zu entdecken und ich mag die Abwechslung. Eine inspirierende
Städtereise sagt mir genauso zu wie Badeferien
an einem der vielen schönen Strände dieser Welt.
What motivated you to become director of Edelweiss?
Edelweiss has a strong position in the market and is
very popular indeed with the Swiss. Edelweiss is a
jewel. I am motivated by participating in making sure
that this jewel continues to shine.
What do you want to keep and what do you want
to change?
Edelweiss is successful and fit for the future. Next
year we’re celebrating our 20 year anniversary. I want
to continue to write the Edelweiss success story
with our motivated team and to surprise our guests
again and again.
What surprised you at Edelweiss?
I have the greatest respect for the way Edelweiss has
stood out in recent years with its top service, how
it’s grown and how it’s kept its position in a hard
fought market.
Where do you like flying on holiday the best?
I love discovering new countries with my family and
I love the variety. An inspiring city break appeals as
much to me as a seaside holiday on one of the many
beautiful beaches in the world.

huket ist eine Insel. Dem Lächeln seiner
Bewohner nach gar eine Insel der Glückseligen. Das hügelige Eiland Koh Phuket
(«Koh» bedeutet auf thailändisch Insel) ist
mit 543 Quadratkilometern rund zwei Mal so gross
wie der Kanton Genf. 335 000 Einwohner leben
auf diesem Flecken Land in der Andamanensee,
davon 75 000 in Phuket-Stadt. Die Architektur der
kleinen Metropole spiegelt zwar ein portugiesisches Erbe, die Stadt war wie das ganze Land aber
nie Teil eines Kolonialreiches. So bewahrte es sich
eine eigene Tradition und eine sehr selbstbewusste Kultur, die stark vom Buddhismus geprägt ist.
Gelassenheit und die stille Akzeptanz des Schicksals sind wichtige Aspekte im Glauben der Thailänder. Während einer Ferienreise nach Phuket
kann man sich – im Gegensatz zu der hinlänglichen Bekanntheit der dortigen Partymeile – auch
von dieser Gelassenheit anstecken lassen. Wie im
gesamten Süden von Thailand gibt es auch auf
Phuket eine muslimische Minderheit. Der berühmteste und grösste TempeI auf Phuket ist aber bud-

huket is an island. And going by the smiles
of the local people it could be described
as an island of the blissful. With its 543
square kilometres, the hilly island of Koh
Phuket (“Koh” means “island” in Thai) is about
twice as big as the Swiss Canton of Geneva. This
piece of land in the Andaman Sea is home to
335,000 people, 75,000 of whom live in the city
of Phuket. The architecture of the little metropolis reflects a Portuguese heritage – although neither the city nor the country as a whole were ever
part of a colonial empire. It has therefore maintained a tradition of its own and a very self confident culture with a very strong Buddhist influence.
A sense of calm and a peaceful acceptance of one’s
fate form an important part of the Thai belief system. On a holiday in Phuket – the island’s wellknown and very vibrant party scene aside – this
sense of calm can be infectious. Like the whole of
the southern part of Thailand, Phuket also has a
Muslim minority. The best known and biggest temple in Phuket is Buddhist, however: Wat Chalong
in the south west of the island. Buddhist Thais
regularly attend their temple to pray. In this context they not only pray to Buddha, they also pray
to the souls of deceased spirits or earlier kings.
Their royal family is holy to the Thais and criticism
of it can be punishable with jail. All in all the Thais
are very relaxed when dealing with the uninitiated
west European “Gringos.” “Mai Pen Rai” and “Chai
Yen Yen” mean “it doesn’t matter!” and “take it
easy!” and are used by the local people very often.
Exploring Phuket as a pedestrian can be somewhat, well, a little less relaxed. The many tuk-tuks
are perhaps a safer means of transport. They come
in both motorised and pedal powered versions
and the drivers normally charge fixed prices according to where you are going and how long it
takes to get there. The days in which tourists were

ihr kann mit Gefängnis bestraft werden. Insgesamt
ist der Umgang der Thais mit unwissenden westeuropäischen «Gringos» ein sehr entspannter.
«Mai Pen Rai» und «Chai Yen Yen» bedeuten
«Macht nichts!» und «Nimms locker!» und werden
von den Einheimischen sehr oft gebraucht. Weniger entspannt ist man auf Phuket als Fussgänger
unterwegs. Eine sichere Art der Fortbewegung
bieten die zahlreichen Tuk-Tuks. Es gibt sie sowohl
in motorisierter Ausführung wie auch pedalenbetrieben. Die Fahrer verrechnen seit einiger Zeit
meist fixe Preise. Die Zeiten, in denen Touristen
aufgerundete Spezialpreise zu entlöhnen hatten,
sind glücklicherweise vorbei.
Glücklich durch Ehrlich- und Achtsamkeit
Jede Familie auf Phuket hat beim verheerenden
Tsunami-Unglück 2004 jemanden verloren oder
kennt zumindest jemanden, der umgekommen ist.
Heute, zehn Jahre später, geht man auf der Insel
mittlerweile recht gelassen damit um. Dabei spielt
auch der buddhistische Glaube eine wichtige Rolle. Gläubige Thais folgen den sogenannten «edlen
Wahrheiten»: Alles Leben beinhaltet Leiden, welches seine Ursache in Gier, Hass und Verblendung
hat. Vom Leiden befreit wird man durch einen
ehrlichen und achtsamen Lebenswandel.
Westliche Touristen bewundern regelmässig die
Ruhe und Milde der Thais, auch mit wenig finanziellen Mitteln zufrieden zu sein. Eine buddhistische Weisheit besagt: «Wunschlosigkeit führt zu
innerer Ruhe». Der Zustand wunschloser Glücklichkeit ist während eines Aufenthalts auf Phuket
relativ leicht zu erreichen: Ob beim Golfspiel im
Red Mountain Golf Club. Beim Besuch einer der
eindrücklichen Tempel. Beim Morgen-Yoga bei
aufgehender Sonne am Strand oder einer entspannenden Thai-Massage. Positiv dazu bei trägt die
kulinarische Vielseitigkeit der Insel. Bis tief in die
Nacht hinein lassen sich in einem der günstigen
aber leckeren Strandrestaurants Fisch und Mee–
res­früchte geniessen. Viele Märkte sind auch
abends und sogar während der Nacht geöffnet.
Eine Spezialität, die man sich nicht engehen lassen
darf, ist der typische grüne Papayasalat. Die Einheimischen trinken dazu ein Singha-Bier oder einen Whiskey. Den lokalen Snack findet man für
wenige Franken an fast jeder Strassenecke.
Beim Shoppen auf dem Markt sollte man beachten, dass die Kleider oft nur Kopien von Edelmarken sind. Wenn man damit leben kann, kein teures
Original zu tragen, ist die Qualität der Kopie im
besten Fall fast ebenbürtig. Ein weiteres Highlight

thing of the past.
Happy thanks to honesty and mindfulness
Every family in Phuket either lost someone or at
least knows someone who lost their life in the terrible tsunami disaster in 2004. Now, ten years
later, they appear to have taken what happened
on the island in their stride. Their Buddhist faith
has also played an important role in how Thais live
their lives. Devout Thais follow the so-called “noble truths”: all life includes suffering which finds
its origins in greed, hate and delusion. It is possible to be freed from suffering by pursuing an
honest and mindful way of life.
Western tourists are frequently impressed by the
peaceful and mild mannered Thais, who appear
to be happy with little in the way of money. According to a Buddhist proverb, “wanting for little
leads to inner peace.” A state of contented happiness is relatively easy to achieve when staying
on Phuket: whether it’s playing golf at the Red
Mountain Golf Club, or when visiting one of the
impressive temples, over morning yoga on the
beach at sunrise or a relaxing Thai massage. The
island’s culinary variety also provides a positive
contribution. Fish and seafood can be enjoyed late
into the night at any number of reasonably priced
but excellent beach restaurants. Many of the markets are also open in the evening and even into
the night. One speciality that you should be sure
to try out is the typical green papaya salad, which

Von Phuket aus bieten sich mehrere Tagesausflüge auf eine der benachbarten Inseln an. Schnorchler und Taucher finden auf der Halbinsel Railay ein
Paradies vor. Im Osten von Railay bieten mehrere
Kletterschulen ihre Dienste an. Ein Ausflug lohnt
sich auch nach Koh Samui im Golf von Thailand.
Dort unternimmt man eine Tour über die Insel oder
spannt an den malerischen Stränden aus. Weiter
nördlich liegt die Insel Koh Phangan. Hier kann
man an einem der Yoga- und Meditationskurse
teilnehmen. Wem dies zu langweilig ist, hofft auf
eine der berühmten Fullmoon-Parties, welche unregelmässig stattfinden. Ein bisschen touristischer
geht es auf den Phi Phi Inseln mit dem berühmten
Nadel- oder «James Bond-Felsen» zu. 1974 landete hier Roger Moore als Geheimagent ihrer Majestät im Film «Der Mann mit dem goldenen Colt».
Die Inselgruppe mit grün bewachsenen, bis zu 300
Meter senkrecht aufsteigenden, von Höhlen und
Grotten durchlöcherten Felsen ist Teil eines Nationalparks. Eine der Inseln – Phi Phi Leh – ist komplett unbewohnt. Auf Phi Phi Don gibt es keine
Strassen. Dies bedeutet weniger Stress, dafür viel
Zeit zum Durchatmen und Glücklichsein.

at almost every street corner.
When shopping at the market it is important to
remember that the clothes on sale are often just
copies of leading brands. If you are okay with that
and don’t insist on wearing pricey original brand
names, their quality can sometimes be almost
identical. Another highlight is visiting one of the
floating restaurants. Laem Daeng is one of the
prettiest, and is only accessible by longtail boat.
Both the food and the service alike are traditional
and unaffected, including the staff’s poor English!
But everything works out well and is understood
with a sincere smile.
Starting from Phuket, several day excursions are
on offer to the neighbouring islands. Snorkelers
and divers can find an underwater paradise on
Railay peninsula. Several climbing schools offer
their services in the eastern part of Railay. Koh
Samui in the Gulf of Thailand is well worth visiting
for a tour of the island or simply to relax on one
of the many picturesque beaches. Koh Phangan
island is situated further north. Yoga and meditation
courses are on offer here. For those tourists who
think such things are a little too quiet, they should
keep their fingers crossed for one of the famous
full-moon parties, which take place every now and
then. Things are a little more touristy on the Phi Phi
Islands, with their famous Needle, or “James Bond
rocks.” This is where Roger Moore landed in 1974
as her Majesty’s secret agent 007 in the film “The
Man with the Golden Gun.” The archipelago, with
its green rocks that feature caves and crevices and
that rise vertically up to 300 meters, is part of a
national park. One of the islands, Phi Phi Leh, is
completely uninhabited. There aren’t even any
roads on Phi Phi Don. This means less stress and
plenty of time to breathe the air and be happy.

enn sie lächelt, blitzt frech ein Steinchen auf, das am schneeweissen
Eckzahn klebt. Dazu strahlen zwei
dunkle Augen aus einem Gesicht,
das den Model-Scouts nicht entgangen ist. Melanie
Wäffler findet modeln aber langweilig: «Da ist man
so ein Püppchen und es wird einem gesagt, mach
das und das. Und das ist dann eben nicht so mein
Ding.» Klarer Fall: Da steht eine Persönlichkeit, die
gerne anpackt, Verantwortung übernimmt und
mehr als lächelt. Sie strahlt damit eine Wärme und
Fröhlichkeit aus, um die es schade wäre, würde sie
bloss auf Fotos eingefangen. Sie kommt in den
beiden Berufen, die Melanie Wäffler gewählt hat,

from a face that the modelling
scouts could not have failed to miss. Yet Melanie
Wäffler finds modelling boring: “You get treated
like a doll and you constantly get told to do this
and that. And when it comes to it, that’s not really my kind of thing.” It’s a clear cut case: this is
a young woman with a personality who likes getting things done and taking responsibility – and
is much more than just a pretty smile. Since she
also radiates warmth and joie-de-vivre, it would
be a huge shame if her work was confined to

viel besser zum Einsatz: Chef de Cabine und Prophylaxeassistentin. Ob Passagier oder Patient, wer
von Melanie Wäffler strahlend empfangen wird,
fühlt sich sofort willkommen und gut aufgehoben.
Das ist an Bord wie in der Praxis wichtig, denn an
beide Orte kommen immer wieder Menschen, die
von einem gewissen Bangen belastet über die
Schwelle treten. «Man spürt mit der Zeit heraus,
ob ein Passagier Flugangst oder ob ein Patient
den Bammel vor dem Zahnarztstuhl hat», erklärt
Melanie Wäffler. «Rein mit der Art, wie man mit
Leuten spricht, kann man ihnen Angst nehmen.»
Gute Laune ansteckend, Jetlag unbekannt
Auch unter den Bedingungen von grossen Zeitverschiebungen und wechselnden Arbeitszeiten
freundliche Worte und ein Lächeln auf den Lippen
zu haben, ist nicht allen gegeben. Melanie Wäffler
ist ein Glücksfall: «Ich bin eine aufgestellte Person.
Ganz selten stehe ich mit dem falschen Bein auf.»
Das kommt ihr in Situationen zugute, in denen
andere sich zusammenreissen müssten: Zwölf
Stunden lang mit bis zu 300 Leuten auf beschränktem Raum und dabei die Bedürfnisse aller im Auge
zu behalten, ist nicht ohne. «Will jemand nur nörgeln, mach ich mir eine Challenge draus, diesen
schlecht gelaunten Menschen im Laufe des Fluges

it’s a passenger or a patient, anybody to be welcomed by Melanie Wäffler immediately feels at
ease and as though they’re in good hands. This is
important both on board the plane and in the
dental practice, places where the people who
cross the threshold often feel more than a little
apprehensive. Melanie explains: “over time you can
tell whether a passenger is afraid of flying, or if a
patient is afraid of the dentist’s chair. You can
soothe someone’s anxieties simply by the way that
you talk to them.”
A good mood that’s catching, and jet lag that’s
unheard of
When it comes to big time differences and alternating working times, by no means is everyone
capable of friendly conversation and maintaining
a smile – and so Melanie Wäffler is a godsend: “I’m
an outgoing person. I very rarely get out on the
wrong side of bed in the morning.” This also helps
her in those situations in which others would be
tearing their hair out: spending twelve hours with
up to 300 passengers in a limited space and continuously attending to their needs is no mean feat.

so umzustimmen, dass er zufrieden aussteigt»,
sagt sie gelassen. Sie selbst geniesst die Zeit an
Bord: «Ich finde Fliegen so toll, es fühlt sich für
mich wie ein Hobby an.» Jetlag? Unbekannt. «Ich
brauche wenig Schlaf. Und ich liebe die unregelmässigen Einsatzzeiten. Ich könnte mir nie mehr
vorstellen, zu 100 % von acht bis fünf zu arbeiten.»
Das war vor sieben Jahren in der Zahnarztpraxis.
«Da schwärmte mir eine Freundin von der Fliegerei bei Edelweiss vor und schickte mir immer die
Anmeldungen zum Einstiegskurs», erinnert sich
Melanie Wäffler. Eines Tages meldete sie sich an,
es klappte und sie «blieb hängen», wie sie verschmitzt sagt.
Letzten November entschied sich Melanie Wäffler,
parallel zum Fliegen bei Edelweiss wieder in ihren
ersten Beruf einzusteigen. «Die Dentalmedizin
entwickelt sich schnell, ich wollte den Draht dazu
nicht verlieren», erklärt die Prophylaxeassistentin.
An zwei Tagen pro Woche heisst das zum Beispiel,
Kindern zu erklären, wie sie am besten die Zähne
putzen. Welches Kind putzt schon gerne die Zähne? Doch Melanie Wäffler hat auch einen guten
Zugang zu den Kleinen. Auch an Bord kann es
Situationen geben, wo eine Mama nicht mehr weiterweiss und die Aufmerksamkeit einer Flight
Attendant Wunder wirkt. Melanie Wäfflers Liebe
“If someone is being really grouchy, I turn it into
a challenge and try to make them feel better during the flight so that they leave the plane feeling
happy,” she explains with a sense of confidence.
She personally enjoys her time on board: “I love
flying, it’s like a hobby to me.” Jet lag? It’s unheard
of. “I don’t need much sleep. And I really like the
irregular working hours. I couldn’t imagine working from eight to five all the time, ever again.”
Seven years ago, that was her life in the dental
practice. “And then a friend of mine told me about
how great it was working at Edelweiss, and she
kept sending me the application forms for the
training course,” Melanie recalls. One day she sent
the forms in, things worked out, and she decided
to “stick around” she says, mischievously.
Last November, Melanie decided to make a return
to her former profession at the same time as flying
with Edelweiss. “The world of dental medicine is
developing very quickly and I didn’t want to lose
my connections with it,” she explains. This means
she now spends two days a week doing things like
teaching children the best way to clean their teeth.
Does any child like brushing their teeth? Melanie
Wäffler happens to be a natural with children. On

Ausgang statt Sofa, Camper statt Hotel
Wenn Melanie Wäffler in die Ferien geht, sucht sie
keine Hotels und Restaurants auf: «Davon haben
wir während der Arbeitszeit schon genug.» Mit
«wir» meint sie sich und ihren Freund, der Pilot ist
bei Edelweiss. «Ich weiss, es klingt nach Klischee,
aber wir haben uns davor schon gekannt und dann
bei Edelweiss noch besser kennengelernt», mehr
will sie nicht verraten. Zu zweit unternehmen sie
gerne grössere Reisen, am liebsten im Camper
durch die USA oder Australien. Oder mal eine kleine Wohnung mieten. «Ich liebe es, wenn ich selbst
schalten und walten kann.» – Wie entspannt man
sich, in einem so bewegten Leben? «Das Sofa und
die Badewanne sind nicht so meine Dinger. Ich bin
ein Wirbelwind. Wenn ich mal einen stressigen Tag
hatte, suche ich lieber den Austausch mit Kolleginnen beim Kaffee. Ich muss immer raus und was
tun.» Sagts und lässt nochmals das Steinchen aufblitzen, bevor sie ihre Tasche nimmt. Ein Wirbelwind bleibt nie lange am selben Ort.
Getting out rather than the sofa, the camper van
rather than a hotel
When Melanie Wäffler goes on holiday she doesn’t
look for hotels and restaurants: “We get to see
enough of those in our jobs.” By “we” she means
her and her boyfriend, who is a pilot at Edelweiss.
“I know it sounds like a cliché but we knew each
other beforehand and got to know each other better at Edelweiss” – although she doesn’t want to
reveal any more. They enjoy going on ambitious
vacations together, ideally in their camper van
across the USA or Australia. Or just renting a small
apartment. “I love being able to do what I want.”
– How do you relax with such a busy life? “The
sofa and the bathtub aren’t really my kind of thing.
I’m a whirlwind. If I have a stressful day I prefer to
chat with a colleague over a coffee. I always want
to get out and do things.” The conversation over,
Melanie polishes that little jewel once again before
she gets her bag. A whirlwind never stays in the
same place for too long.

After so much extravagance, the four young ladies
are in the mood for a little quiet and fresh air. The
Aygo takes them to the old town, negotiating its
narrow, winding alleys which lead up to the castle.

seinesgleichen sucht. Entgegen dem Trend der
Hotels am Las Vegas Strip braucht das Wynn keine Attraktionen, die von der Strasse aus bewundert werden können. Ganz einfach, weil es diese
nicht nötig hat, um Besucher anzulocken. Die
Hauptattraktion im Wynn ist der «Lake of Dreams»,
ein künstlicher See, auf den Bilder projiziert werden. Im eigenen Bühnengebäude mit Schwimmbecken und Unterwasserlabyrinth spielt die eigens
für das Hotel konzipierte Wasserrevue «Le Rêve
– The Dream». Einen Ferrari oder Maserati aus
dem hauseigenen Fuhrpark buchen – kinderleicht.
2008 wurde die Kapazität mit dem Bau des
Schwesterhotels «Encore» nochmals ausgebaut.

level of extravagance. Right from the start, his goal
was to create a hotel whose level of luxury would
be second to none. Contrary to the trend for hotels
on the Las Vegas Strip, the Wynn doesn’t need
any extras to attract admiring glances from the
street: it’s so good, it simply doesn’t have to do
much to attract the guests. The main attraction in
the Wynn is the “Lake of Dreams,” an artificial lake
onto which images are projected. The “Le Rêve –
The Dream” water show, created especially for the
hotel, plays in its own stage building, which features a swimming pool and underwater labyrinth.
Shows aren’t your thing? Feeling a ‘need for speed’?
Try booking a Ferrari or Maserati from the hotel’s
fleet – it could’t be easier. In 2008, capacity was
increased further with the construction of its sister
hotel, the “Encore.” Steve Wynn, now one of the
richest men in the USA, began his career in 1967
as a simple casino worker. With the building of the
Wynn hotel at the start of the millennium he took
a huge risk – at least in financial terms. And yet
what could go wrong with this name, which recalls
the word “win”? After all, the “winner takes all,” is
a traditional saying in Las Vegas, the gambling
capital of the world. And winners enjoy spending
their money. This is certainly true in “the Wynn
Esplanade” shopping mall for instance, home to
the only official Rolex shop in the USA and the
only place outside of New York that has an actual
Manolo Blahnik shoe store. Selected top chefs cater for guests in almost two dozen restaurants.
Whether it’s steak, Italian, Asian or all-American:
the Wynn offers a dish to suit every conceivable
taste. The spa, with its 37 different treatment
rooms, is a great place to take some time out from
the fast-paced glittering city. With all this, it
shouldn’t come as any surprise that the wedding
chapel is so well patronised.

Herr Opprecht, Sie sind Multimillionär, Besitzer
eines grossen Luxushotels, Künstler, Gründer
der Hilfsorganisation BPN und Familienvater.
Warum so viele Aktivitäten – Sie könnten sichs
auch auf einer Luxusyacht bequem machen?
Jürg Opprecht: Die Luxusyacht würde mich nicht
befriedigen. Das spare ich mir vielleicht höchstens
für einmal im Jahr auf. Vom Naturell her bin ich
Unternehmer, gehe mit offenen Augen durch die
Welt und entdecke immer wieder Möglichkeiten,
Probleme zu lösen oder Dinge zu optimieren.
Was für eine Befriedigung suchen Sie
in Ihrem Leben?
Opprecht: In erster Linie sind das Beziehungen zu
Menschen, zu Mitarbeitenden. Dann fasziniert es
mich, eine Vision verfolgen zu können und sich ihr
Schritt für Schritt zu nähern. Früher bin ich oft
etwas zu rasant auf diese Visionen zugerannt – und
bin dabei auch auf die Nase gefallen. Heute lege

in die Titus Immobilien AG –
davon 30 Millionen Franken in das
5-Sterne-Hotel Lenkerhof in
Lenk im Simmental – und in die
Hilfsorganisation BPN.
Jürg Opprecht (*1951) grew up near
Zurich as the son of the founder
of the engineering works Soudronic.
He studied electrical engineering
and initially worked in his father’s
firm. In 1997 his family sold its
business and invested some of the
proceeds in Titus Immobilien AG
– of which 30 million Francs were
put into the 5 star Lenkerhof Hotel
in Lenk, Simmental – and in the
aid organisation, BPN.
Mr. Opprecht, you’re a multimillionaire, the
owner of a large luxury hotel, an artist, the
founder of the aid organisation BPN and a
family man. Why are you so busy when you
could simply be relaxing on a luxury yacht?
Jürg Opprecht: I wouldn’t be satisfied spending
all my time on a luxury yacht. Relaxing like that is
enough for me once a year at the most. I’m a
natural entrepreneur – I go through life looking at
things, constantly discovering new opportunities,
finding problems that need solving and things that
need improving.
So what kind of satisfying things do you look
for in your life?
Opprecht: First and foremost, relationships with
people and employees. I’m fascinated in being
able to pursue a vision and closing in on it, on a
step-by-step basis. In earlier days I often ran at
my visions too fast – only to fall on my face. Nowadays I attribute more value to developing things
that actually exist.
Germany’s former Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt,
once said: “People with visions should go to
the doctor”...
Opprecht: Another proverb says: “When there is
no vision, the people perish.” I find the second to
be more fitting – especially when you work in developing countries. There, visions give people hope.
Your aid organisation, Business Professionals
Network – BPN for short – with which you help
entrepreneurs in developing countries to stand
on their own with coaching and financial
support, is a visionary project. How did it come
into being?
Opprecht: In 1997, a friend invited me to the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, to a presentation on
“How do I start a business?” and I saw the desperation there, caused by huge unemployment
and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Seeing that
really hit me, so I decided to create an organisation
in which entrepreneurs help other entrepreneurs.
Your biggest challenges when creating BPN?
Opprecht: Making entrepreneurs change their
minds. They don’t just need business knowledge
and financial support. They also need a long term
perspective – not just a survival strategy.
You are known to be a devout Christian and you
aren’t afraid of going public with your beliefs.
Does BPN have a missionary character?
Opprecht: I am convinced that the traditional
Christian values of honesty, hard work, reliability,
modesty, quality and sustainability are key factors
in entrepreneurial success. That’s why we want to
take them to the BPN countries – without trying
to convince them about Christianity. That wouldn’t
be fair. We have a lot of people in our programme
who follow different faiths, but we expect them
to apply our values in their everyday business life.

Opprecht: Ein anderes Sprichwort sagt: «Ohne
Visionen gehen die Menschen zugrunde.» Ich finde Zweiteres zutreffender – vor allem, wenn man
in Entwicklungsländern tätig ist. Dort geben Visionen den Menschen Hoffnung.
Ihre Hilfsorganisation Business Professionals
Network – kurz BPN –, bei dem Sie Unternehmern
in Entwicklungsländern mit Coaching und
finanziellen Mitteln auf die Beine helfen, ist ein
visionäres Projekt. Wie kam es dazu?
Opprecht: Ich hielt 1997 auf Einladung eines Freundes in Kirgisiens Hauptstadt Bischkek ein Referat
zum Thema «Wie starte ich ein Unternehmen?»
und sah die Not der immensen Arbeitslosigkeit
nach dem Zerfall der Sowjetunion. Das machte
mich tief betroffen, und ich beschloss, eine Organisation zu gründen, in der Unternehmer Unternehmern helfen.
Was waren die grössten Herausforderungen
beim Aufbau von BPN?
Opprecht: Die Unternehmerinnen und Unternehmer zum Umdenken zu bringen. Sie brauchen
nicht bloss betriebswirtschaftliches Wissen und
finanzielle Unterstützung. Sie brauchen einen Paradigmenwechsel, eine langfristige Perspektive
und nicht bloss eine Überlebensstrategie.
Sie gelten als tiefgläubiger Christ, der den
Glauben auch publizistisch nach aussen trägt.
Hat BPN einen missionarischen Charakter?
Opprecht: Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass die bewährten christlichen Werte wie Ehrlichkeit, Fleiss,
Zuverlässigkeit, Bescheidenheit, Qualität und
Nachhaltigkeit ein wesentlicher Faktor für unternehmerischen Erfolg sind. Darum wollen wir sie in
die BPN-Länder tragen – ohne die Menschen zum
Christentum zu überreden. Das wäre nicht fair.
Wir haben viele Andersgläubige in unserem Programm, aber wir erwarten, dass sie unsere Werte
im Businessalltag mittragen. Für diese Leitplanken
sind sie uns dankbar. Ein kirgisischer Unternehmer
sagte mir einmal «Wir brauchen gesunde Werte,
denn wir sind eine wertelose Gesellschaft.»
Sie sind auch Besitzer des 5-Sterne-Hotels
Lenkerhof Gourmet und Spa. Ist das nicht
ein etwas zynischer Gegensatz zu den armen
Gegenden der Welt, wo BPN tätig ist?
Opprecht: BPN ist meine Berufung, der Lenkerhof
meine Leidenschaft. Aber es geht bei beiden darum, den Menschen Gutes zu tun – wohlgemerkt
nach verschiedenen Bedürfnissen.
Sie sind auch ein leidenschaftlicher Kunstmaler.
Widerspiegeln sich Eindrücke und Erfahrungen,
die Sie mit BPN weltweit gemacht haben, auch
in Ihrer Kunst?

Isn’t that something of a cynical
contrast to the poor parts of
the world in which BPN works?
Opprecht: BPN is my calling, and
the Lenkerhof is my passion. Yet
both revolve around doing good
things for people – although the
requirements clearly differ.
You’re also a painter. Are the
impressions and experiences you
have gained around the world
with BPN reflected in your art?
Opprecht: I draw the colours, materials and inspiration from the
steppe and deserts of Africa and
Asia. That’s why my work tends
to use earthy and patina shades
rather than bright colours. Yet I
can also be inspired by an old wall
in Nicaragua or the horizon in
Rwanda which I then interpret in
many different colours and shapes.
What does money mean to you?
Opprecht: I’d be lying if I said it didn’t play a role.
Money is an important factor in society. I’m therefore of the view that being able to make money is
a virtue. Those who do have money have a responsibility towards those who are less privileged.
Is it possible to make new friends with money?
Opprecht: Not necessarily. There are quite a lot of
jealous people. With my best friends, money plays
no role.
What do you spend most of your private money on?
Opprecht: On my children. I like going on vacations
with them, that I am able to pay for. Travelling with
me is something they won’t be able to inherit!
Do you fly economy or business class?
Opprecht: I used to fly economy class a lot, especially in the early days of BPN. As I get older I tend
to spoil myself, and I often fly business class with
my wife.

Opprecht: Die Farben, Materialien und Inspiration
schöpfe ich aus den Steppen und Wüsten Afrikas
oder Asiens. Deshalb sind sie eher in Erd- und
Patinatönen als in knalligem Rot oder Grün anzusiedeln. Aber ich lasse mich auch von einer alten
Mauer in Nicaragua oder dem Horizont in Ruanda
inspirieren, was ich dann in verschiedenen Farben
und Formen interpretiere.
Was bedeutet Ihnen Geld?
Opprecht: Ich würde lügen, wenn ich sagte, es
spielt keine Rolle. Geld ist ein wichtiger Faktor der
Gesellschaft. Ich empfinde es darum auch als eine
Tugend, mit Geld gewinnbringend zu wirtschaften.
Denn wer Geld hat, hat auch Verantwortung gegenüber den weniger Privilegierten.
Gewinnt man mit Geld auch neue Freunde?
Opprecht: Nicht nur. Es gibt auch viele Neider. Bei
meinen besten Freunden spielt Geld keine Rolle.
Wofür geben Sie privat am meisten Geld aus?
Opprecht: Für die Kinder. Indem wir zum Beispiel
gemeinsam tolle Reisen unternehmen, die ich
finanziere. Das fehlt ihnen dann einfach im Erbe.
Wo sitzen Sie im Flugzeug – Eco oder Business?
Opprecht: Ich bin sehr viel Economy geflogen.
Gerade am Anfang von BPN. Mit zunehmendem
Alter gönne ich mir aber heute mit meiner Frau
auch öfter mal die Business Class.

Clifford Lilley nach ihrem Besuch in
Edinburgh. Die Hauptstadt Schottlands
ist die neben London am zweitmeisten besuchte
Touristendestination Grossbritanniens. Seit diesem Jahr fliegt Edelweiss von Mai bis Oktober zwei
Mal wöchentlich nach Edinburgh und macht das
spezielle Flair der Stadt erlebbar. Hoch oben auf
dem Castle Rock thront das Schloss. Es beherbergt
die schottischen Kronjuwelen und bietet einen
wunderbaren Ausblick auf die Stadt am Meer.
«Das mittelalterliche Stadtzentrum strahlt keltische Mystik aus», begeistert sich Magier Vincent
Raven. Wer es gruslig mag, besucht die Hauptgasse Mary King’s Close. 1645 wütete hier die Pest.
Kurzerhand mauerte man die Gasse samt ihren
Bewohnern zu. Noch immer sollen hier ihre verlorenen Seelen spuken.

year, Edelweiss now flies to Edinburgh twice a week

It is the home of the Scottish crown jewels and
provides excellent views of the city by the sea.
“The medieval city centre radiates a Celtic mystique,” enthuses magician Vincent Raven. Those
with a taste for things grisly visit the alleyway Mary
King’s Close. The plague raged here in 1645, and
the alley was mercilessly bricked up along with its
inhabitants. It is supposedly haunted by their lost
spirits to this day.

A dream team takes off - with a great idea and lots of
entrepreneurial spirit. Initially Runway 34 was nothing
but a crazy idea of the initiator, co-owner and Edelweiss
Captain Reto Seipel. Together with his business partner
Stefan Hunziker, an experienced restaurateur, he turned
this visionary project into reality in 2005. The idea: to
build a special restaurant around a unique airplane. The
concept of bringing the fascination of aviation alive with
charming flight attendants, an outstanding international
choice of cuisine and a love for details proved to be an
instant and long lasting success. All of this due to the passion, innovation and quality which are the Runway 34

“My favourite walk starts on a beautiful white
beach. You quickly reach the old Roman road
which used to link the Roman-Phoenician cities
of Nora and Bithia. The path then leads along
the coast at a slight ascent. It sometimes meanders through pine forests and the macchia
vegetation which is typical of the island, with
gorse, juniper, acacia, myrtle and arbutus. While
venturing along this path, you get regular views
of the unspoilt coastline and the deep blue of
the sea. Walking times vary, of course, but after
about two hours you reach a sheltered bay with
a watchtower dating from the 17th century.”

of the Santorini archipelago,” explains Haris

crater footpath from the main town of Fira to
Oia and takes approximately four hours. From
Fira, a narrow asphalt path leads to Imerovigli.
The uphill path occasionally takes you over solidified lava, so strong, durable shoes are highly recommended. It is definitely worth stopping
at the Agios Georgios chapel and the Skaros
rocks. The typical local architecture is also worth
admiring.”

zum Caldeirão Verde auch für mich jedes Mal wieder Überraschungen parat. Auf der Tour folgt man
dem wunderbaren Bewässerungssystem der Levadas. Dabei muss man auch mal über einen kleineren Felsen klettern oder sich durch niedrige
Tunnels tasten. Gänzlich ungeübten Wanderern
und solchen mit Kleinkindern ist die Wanderung
deshalb nicht zu empfehlen. Nach gut zwei Stunden wird man mit dem prächtigen Anblick des
Caldeirão Verde belohnt: Der «grüne Kessel» ist
ein smaragdgrüner See, der von einem Wasserfall
gespiesen wird.»

“Although it’s a classic and I do it quite often, the
walk to the Caldeirão Verde never fails to yield
new surprises for me. The tour follows the superb
irrigation system of the Levadas. It also takes you
over some small areas of rock which can be difficult to navigate, and along the way you have to
feel your way through some low tunnels. For these
reasons this walk isn’t recommended for inexperienced walkers or walkers with young children.
But for those that make the journey, after two
hours you are rewarded with an excellent view of
the Caldeirão Verde: The “green kettle” is an emerald green lake which is fed by a waterfall.

of the island to the Tirajana gorge. It starts in the
pretty village of Santa Lucia. The market place

Fortaleza is a majestic rock formation with caves
which is where the inhabitants of the island hid
from the Spanish conquerors. On paths which connect the coastal fishing villages with the mountain
villages, one can immerse oneself in tropical vegetation with coloured wild flowers, palms and
cacti. Those who get tired can find refreshment
with some Gofio cake. Gofio is a traditional food
eaten by the inhabitants of the island consisting
of milled corn, honey, milk and dried fruit.”

Seit Anfang Juni 2014 sind die beiden Edelweiss Langstreckenmaschinen A330-200 und A330-300 mit umgebauten
Kabinen unterwegs. Die neue Business Class von Edelweiss
verfügt nun über Fully Lie-Flat-Sitze, die sich in zwei Meter
lange Betten verwandeln lassen. Optimaler Komfort, exzellenter
Service und das neue Unterhaltungssystem mit den grossen
16" HD Touchscreens garantieren einen unvergesslichen Flug.
Dank der neu eingeführten Economy Max kommen die Fluggäste nun in den Genuss von mehr Platz und weiteren Annehmlichkeiten. Auch die Economy Class wurde mit neuen Sitzen
und einem neuen Unterhaltungssystem mit Touchscreens
aufgerüstet.
The focus of Edelweiss is on innovation and state-of-the-art
technology. Since June 2014, the refurbished cabins of
the A330-300 and A330-200 aircraft offer a more comfortable
interior on Edelweiss long-haul flights. The new Edelweiss
Business Class features fully lie-flat seats that can be converted
into two-metre long beds. Optimal comfort, excellent service
and a new in-flight entertainment system with large 16-inch HD
touch screens ensure a superior travel experience. In the new
Economy Max, Edelweiss passengers can enjoy more space and
several other amenities. What is more, new seats and a new
in-flight entertainment system, including touch screens, ensure
greater comfort in Economy Class.
