She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast to her brunette hair. She looked at her mom and asked, “Why are some of your hairs white?” Her mom replied, “Well, every time you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turn white.” The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then asked, “How come all of grandma’s hairs are white?” Famous Mothers Mary Mary Quite Contrary’s mother: I don’t mind you having a garden, Mary, but does it have to be growing under your bed? Mona Lisa’s mother: After all that money your father and I spent on braces, Mona, and that’s the biggest smile you can give us? Humpty Dumpty’s mother: If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a hundred times not to sit on that wall but would you listen to me, Noooo! Little Miss Muffet’s mother: Well, all I’ve got to say is if you don’t get off your tuffet and clean your room there’ll be a lost more spiders around here. Mary’s mother: I’m not upset that your lamb followed you to school, Mary, but I would like to know how he got a better grade than you. Goldilock’s mother: I’ll got a bill her for a busted chair from the Bear family. Do you know anything about this Goldie? Albert Einstein’s mother: Al, it’s your senior picture. Can’t you do something about your hair? Styling gel, mousse, something …? Thomas Edison’s mother: Of course I’m proud that you invented the lightbulb. Now turn off that light and get to bed. Babe Ruth’s mother: How many times have I told you to quit playing ball in the house. That’s the third broken window this week. Michelangelo’s mother: Can’t you paint on the walls like other children? Do you have any idea how hard it is to get that stuff off the ceiling? George Washington’s mother: Next time I catch you throwing your money across the Potomac you can kiss your allowance goodbye. Paul Revere’s mother: I don’t care where you think you have to go, midnight is past your curfew. Batman’s mother: It’s a nice car, Bruce, but do you realize how much the insurance is going to be? TALL OAKS ASSISTED LIVING: ACORNS N’ OAKS POETRY PAGE PAGE 7 Bedtime Kiss O mothers so weary and discouraged, worn out with the care of the day You often grow cross and impatient, complain of the noise and the play For the day brings so many vexations, so many things gone amiss But mother whatever may vex you, send the children to bed with a kiss The dear little feet wander often, perhaps from the pathway of right The dear little hands find new mischief to try you from morning till night But think of the desolate mothers who’d give all the world for your bliss And as thanks for your infinite blessings send the children to bed with a kiss For some day their voice will not vex you, the silence will hurt you far more You will long for the sweet childish voices, for a sweet childish face at the door And to press a child’s face to your bosom you’d give all the world just for this For the comfort twill bring in you sorrow, send the children to bed with a kiss Jeep In The Mud During training exercises the lieutenant who was driving down a muddy back road encountered another car stuck in the mud with a red faced colonel at the wheel. “Your jeep stuck, sir?” asked the lieutenant as he pulled alongside. “Nope,” replied the colonel coming over and handing him the keys, “but yours is.” A Boy Named Sue A guy was telling about a girl named Sue who disguised herself as a man and joined the army. “Wait,” said his friend, “she’ll have to dress with the boys and shower with them too, won’t she?” “Sure,” replied the guy. “Won’t they find out?” was the response. The guy shrugged, “Who’s gonna tell?” My Mother’s Hands Such beautiful hands, they're neither white nor small And you, I know, would scarcely think that they were fair at all I’ve looked on hands whose form and hue, a sculptor’s dream might be Yet are those wrinkled aged hands more beautiful to me Such beautiful hands though heart were weary and sad These patient hands kept toiling on that the children might be glad I always weep as looking back to childhood’s distant day I think how those hands rested not when mine were at play Such beautiful hands, they’re growing feeble now For time and pain have left their mark on hands and heart and brow Alas the nearing time and the sad day to me When neath the daisies out of sight these hands will folded be But oh beyond this shadowland where all is bright and fair I know full well these dear old hands will palms of victory bear Where crystal streams through endless years flow over golden sands And where the old grow young again I’ll clasp my mother’s hands PAGE 8 Resident Birthdays Birthstone: Diamond, Flower: Sweet Pea, Colors: Red & Yellow Zodiac: Aries (4/1-20) & Taurus (4/21-30) 5: Jean Muldowney 6: Peggy Darrin 8: Kathryn Rose 12: Matt Borg 12: Doris Lawrie 13: Gloria Macomber 14: Ruby Joyce 14: Joan Maher 16: Theresa Levinstone 19: Julia Lannen 24: Walter Meyer 24: Thomas Raphael 26: Lucien Gormont 26: Julie Ramsey 28: Margot Borg 28: Irwin Strassberg 29: Barbara Madgwick CONCIERGE TRIPS The Tall Oaks bus is available for personal use on Mondays from 9am—1pm and Fridays from 9am to 4pm. The bus travels within a 5 mile radius and 24 hours advanced notice is required. Please call the front desk to arrange for a trip. All trips must be verified by the Director of Nursing and/or the Director of Resident Relations before they are approved. Instead of just heading out for doctor’s appointments, the bank and running errands though, consider trying something fun. The Reston Community Center has many great activities and events that are available to all Reston residents. You can even head over to the Herndon Senior Center (they charge a small fee) or take advantage of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) which offers free classes. For more information about each activity, and/or to see a copy of the brochures for each of the centers, please see Jocelyn in the activity office. My last day will be Tuesday, May 3, 2016. It was an extremely difficult decision but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to accept a new challenge and the chance for professional and personal growth. I have been given the opportunity to be a manager at a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Virginia where I will be providing quality of life activities, among other job responsibilities, to a wide variety of Residents. I have not worked with some of these populations so I am looking to learn new skills, knowledge and education to further my career in the healthcare field. I have enjoyed serving the Tall Oaks Residents & family members during my 16 years at Tall Oaks and consider all of you to be my extended family and friends. You will be deeply missed. Perhaps I can come back in the future to do concerts and/or lectures for the community. Best wishes always! Sincerely, Jocelyn Dietary Mother's Day is upon us. What a special day, and we have so many wonderful mothers here at Tall Oaks. The Dietary department is gearing up for a very special Mother's Day brunch, May 8th from 11:15 am to 1:00 pm. We were at capacity last year and just ask that you put in your reservations early at the front desk. Family is the best medicine, and my staff and myself always love to see visiting family members. When I think of my Mother, what stands out the most is her chocolate chip cookies. I was fortunate that my Mother stayed home with us until we went to elementary school, then she went back to work at the town's Park and Recreation department as an assistant. As a special treat, she would make us the cookies, hot and fresh from the oven. The smell would fill the house, and when she would call us in from playing outside, there was nothing more inviting. Here is a poem that I remember reciting to my mom. "M" is for the million things she gave me, "O" means only that she's growing old, "T" is for the tears she shed to save me, "H" is for her heart of purest gold; "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining, "R" means right, and right she'll always be, Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," a word that means the world to me. Happy Dining.
