Dear visitors,
Lüneburg is delighted to welcome you to the 32nd International Hanseatic Days
of Modern Times in Lüneburg! Emissaries from the member cities of the historical
Hanseatic League met for the last time in Lüneburg exactly 600 years ago. Back
then the topics were trade and business, but today the event is all about music,
culture and international understanding. The Hanseatic Days team has put together
a colourful program for you, sure to make the Hanseatic Days a joyous festival.
Meander around the Hansa Market
surrounding the town hall. Over 90
booths and tents showcase the Hanseatic cities from all over Europe who
have sent delegations to Lüneburg.
They offer information on their home
cities and serve culinary delights.
Be sure to visit the historical Artisan and
Craftsmen Market in the western Old
Town and look over the shoulders of blacksmiths, rope makers and salt boilers.
Under the direction of the "Arbeitskreis Lüneburger Altstadt" (a group that works
to preserve the old town), costumed craftsmen demonstrate what their work
was like 600 years ago.

Go to the Stintmarkt, Lüneburg‘s oldest city harbour in the water district, to see
how ships were loaded and unloaded centuries ago. The Old Crane is coming
back to life. It conveys barrels of salt into the salt sculler and salt barge, anchored
at its feet in the Ilmenau, and then returns them again.
Or simply let the vast culture program enthral you. There are eight stages
situated around the downtown area. Artists known throughout Germany, such as
Uwe Ochsenknecht, Santiano, Mary Roos and Ted Herold, are performing, as well
as bands and groups popular in Lüneburg and the surrounding area. The
Hanseatic cities visiting Lüneburg are also contributing to the program, with
music and dance groups from their home cities.
And Lüneburg has even more to offer on the occasion of the Hanseatic Days. The
three downtown churches have their own programs, Avacon (utility company) is
enticing visitors to come see the art exhibit HANSEartWORKS, and the German
Salt Museum features the special exhibit "Lüneburg – The Salt House of the
Hanseatic League." This magazine contains all of the events of the Hanseatic
Days, letting you know where the stages are and who is playing when. It also tells
you where to best park your car or lock up your bike, and where to find
restrooms and first aid stations. The magazine is intended to help you plan your
visit to the Hanseatic Days and to get your bearings once you get here. Have fun
paging through it.

Minister und Bernd Saxe, head of the
Hanseatic League and mayor of Lübeck,
will welcome over 100 delegations from
various Hanseatic cities to the festive
grand opening ceremony. Before that,
the grand opening procession on Am
Sande square will have taken place.
The musical direction for the evening is
in the capable hands of the jazz and
percussion musician Günter Baby
Sommer and the BoppArt Percussion
Ensemble.
Then at 10:45 p.m. the expanded
ensemble GÜNTER BABY SOMMER
BoppArt Percussion and Friends will
give a concert.
The master or ceremonies will be the
well-known moderator from NDR
television, Ludger Abeln.

Günter Baby Sommer is making the
bells of all three churches – St.
Johannis, St. Michaelis and St.
Nicolai – as well as those of the
town hall ring together to delight
the entire city with fascinating
sound. Sommer is being helped by
the church music director Joachim
Vogelsänger (St. Johannis), cantor
Henning Voss (St. Michaelis), sexton
Maik Ondra (St. Nicolai) and Prof.
Günter Schwarze (town hall).
And the other stages have a lot to
offer on the first evening, too.

The Heart of the
Hanseatic Days
The Artisan and Craftsmen Market of
the Hanseatic Days in Lüneburg
follows the tradition of the popular
"Old Artisan and Craftsmen Street"
event that takes place regularly. It
reflects the life and toils of 16th
century Lüneburg: Most of the
buildings in the western Old Town
were built during that era, when
craftsmanship was in its heyday.
The Hansa Market is the heart of
the Hanseatic Days and one of its
biggest attractions. Invitations
were issued to 170 Hanseatic cities
from 16 European countries,
welcoming them to exhibit their
specialties all around the historical
town hall during the Hanseatic
Days June 28 through July 1, 2012.
And more than 100 cities have
accepted the invitation to
participate in the Hanseatic Days.
About 90 of them will have booths
at the Hansa Market.
Since 1982, the "Arbeitskreis
Lüneburger Altstadt" (a group that
works to preserve the old town) has
been organising the Artisan and Craftsmen Market. Craftsmen in traditional
Renaissance garb show their skills, for
example by demonstrating how even
today old homes can be restored using
traditional methods.
At dozens of booths, various craftsmen
and market traders present their
products and allow visitors to look over
their shoulders as they work. They
include cloth makers, carpenters,
blacksmiths, glaziers, leather workers,
tanners, cabinet makers, potters,
candle makers and more. The

square and Marienplatz, and into
Waagestrasse and An der Münze.

The Hansa Market offerings range from
culinary delights to informative
pastimes and souvenirs. And it also
provides a wealth of information on
the individual Hanseatic cities and the
Hanseatic League in general. The
Hansa Market is a central meeting
place for visitors as well as for the
delegates from the various Hanseatic
cities. Musicians and costumed
ambassadors of the Hanseatic
cities add the finishing touches and
provide entertainment.

opened Friday, June 29, at 10:00 a.m.

Th
in the
Come join the hustle and bustle of the old harbour, with
its historical ships and labourers in period costumes. The
labourers will demonstrate how they used to load and
unload their ships with the old wooden crane in
Lüneburg‘s historical harbour along the Stintmarkt and
Fischmarkt. There are two authentic ships anchored at
the dock in front of the old crane waiting to take on arriving cargo: the salt
sculler and the salt barge. Both ships are true to the originals and fully operational. They were built as projects for long-term employed youths and adults,
supported by social organisations and clubs.
Visitors can experience the feel of the sculler from the Stintmarkt
- a real highlight. They can go on board the 12 meter long ship and
marvel at its size.
There will also be booths along the banks of the Ilmenau river throughout
the festival to entice visitors to the harbour. All around the Old Crane, built
in 1797, restaurants and cafés offer a fantastic view of the goings on in the
historical harbour.

Lovable, Liveable and Diverse Shops are Open on Sunday for the

Shopping in the traffic-free downtown
area is a real pleasure. Enjoy an authentic
backdrop of picturesque gables and
typical brick houses. The shops are
carefully integrated into the historical
structures while still managing to
create a modern shopping paradise
– a far cry from artificial, monotone
shopping centres. The 1400 landmarked buildings in the downtown
area create just the right atmosphere.
And over 400 specialty stores offer a
wide range of products for sale.
The shopping city Lüneburg is the
most attractive "open-air department
store." All of the many stores can easily
be reached on foot. Take a detour off
the main pedestrian zones and wander
through the charming alleys to see
their offerings. Delight in the lovingly
run stores and cafés with unique
goods and services.
The topic Shopping will play a major
role at the 32nd International Hanseatic
Days. July 1, the second Sunday this
year on which the shops are open, will
be dominated by the Hanseatic festival
when the stores open their doors
from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. to
welcome guests and locals to a Sunday
stroll in the shopping city Lüneburg.
A special treat: The city buses are free
of charge on Sunday.

Recommendation:
Take the ME or MEr trains coming from Hamburg or Uelzen. There is a special schedule with additional trains during the Hanseatic Days. Coming from Hamburg, Lüneburg is easy to get to with tickets from the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV, Hamburg transit company).

The local Lüneburg bus lines will stop at Clamart Park. The buses can

"Lüneburg – The Salt House
of the Hanseatic League" –
German Salt Museum
On the occasion of the 32nd International Hanseatic Days in June 2012, the
German Salt Museum is hosting the
exhibit Lüneburg – The Salt House of
the Hanseatic League. Beginning June
16, 2012, visitors can experience:
Packaged. Opened. Revealed. Using
about 16 maritime containers, a
temporary exhibit will be created in the
parking lot next to the German Salt
Museum, a unique attraction on the
museum grounds. The unusual location
demands an unusual exhibit concept.
Even the exterior conveys a multitude
of associations on topics such as trade,
labour, transportation and shipping, preparing the visitor for the ideas conveyed
by the exhibit. The exhibit will run for at least two years.

Mobility and Communication in the
Hanseatic Region" – East Prussian
Regional Museum
During the 32nd International Hanseatic Days in
Lüneburg, the East Prussian Regional Museum
will be home to a special exhibit on the Hanseatic
League. The exhibit "Familiar Distances" takes on
the fascination with the Hanseatic League and
sets new standards by dealing with the newest
and exceptional research findings on the
Hanseatic League. Instead of emphasising the
Hanseatic cities, the exhibit focuses on the
various actors themselves: the merchants and
their circle of associates. A special attraction is the
wealth of original and unusual objects being
exhibited, many of which have never before been on display in such an
arrangement. Five different subject areas of the Hanseatic
League are examined. The exhibit promises visitors
a unique journey into the world of the
Hanseatic League and a show

HANSEartWORKS
The HANSEartWORKS has become a
firmly established part of the International Hanseatic Days. Every member
city of the modern-day Hanseatic
League is invited to participate with an
artist or group of artists. The host city of
the Hanseatic Days can organise the
HANSEartWORKS as it sees fit. The name
of Lüneburg‘s exhibit is "Shapes – Face – Form." Artists from eight nations have
given thought to this idea and will present one or more works of art in Lüneburg.

Some of the artists are creating their work specifically for the Lüneburg exhibit,
and some will not be completed until just before the Hanseatic Days.
The HANSEartWORKS exhibit will be open from Friday,
June 29 through Friday August 31.

The churches will be open late into the night during the Hanseatic Days. From 10:00 a.m. on, you are invited to visit, linger
and reflect. And each of the churches will focus on a different
aspect:

Johannis – The Evolving Church
Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
With the pews removed, the church evokes the impression of a church
during the heyday of the Hanseatic League. In conjunction with St. Michaelis,
there will be short concerts – the "Hansa cantat" series – every hour to delight

Marien – The Church of Prayer
Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
In St. Marien there will be an exhibit of angels, accompanied by music from the
Krakau artist Jan Oberbeck, as well as wooden Lüneburg angels of varying sizes.
The atmosphere will lend itself to contemplation, quiet and prayer.
German and Polish parish members will welcome guests to the café –
Bar kawowy in front of the church.

Michaelis – The Church of Sound
Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
"Hansa cantat" – The Hanseatic League sings and makes music. In conjunction

Hours: 10:00 a.m. – midnight
A café, a salt oasis, models of the Hanseatic churches in the Baltic Sea
region and a puzzle of brick Gothic churches await visitors and offer them a
haven for quiet reflection. Guided tours of the tower are also available. There
will be a light installation in the church Thursday through Saturday, beginning
at 9:49 p.m. (sunset) and ending at midnight.
Special Ecumenical Service
Am Sande
A highlight of the Hanseatic Days will be the festive service on Sunday,
July 1, 10:00 a.m. in the square Am Sande. The whole square will be dedicated to the celebration of an ecumenical service for the vast community.
Encounter – take action together – bless one another: This is the motto of
the religious service that will be celebrated by Lüneburg's Christian communities. The service will be held in front of St. Johannis church and will
be accompanied by wind instruments and a large choir. Ralf Meister, the
regional bishop of the Lutheran church, will give the sermon.

Hanseatic Days 2012:
The Team Behind the Scenes
The Hanseatic Days project team initially consisted of four people. But since
October of last year, it has not stopped growing. The weekly Wednesday round
has expanded to 20 heads – additional growth not to be ruled out. "With such a
major event, it was clear that we would need more and more helping hands as
the date got closer," explains Henry Arends, head of the Hanseatic Days team.
At first it was mostly about coming up with ideas and early preparations, but
now decisions have to made pretty much every week. "Where can we put the
culture groups from the other Hanseatic cities, who can we engage for the
stage shows, where can parents change their children's diapers, which deposit
system should the concession stands use – quite a range of questions." This is
how Arends describes the colourful mix of topics that had to be covered before
the Hanseatic Days.
Within the Hanseatic Days project team, the work is divided again amongst the
employees of the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg and Lüneburg Marketing: Events,
traffic, safety and security, tourism, marketing and sponsoring, press and PR are
just a few of the main focal points.
"Everyone is extremely motivated and looking forward to the Hanseatic
Days 2012," says Henry Arends. "Along with our guests, we will make the
event an unforgettable experience for everyone."
