POOLBAR-FESTIVAL #21
JULY 4th - AUGUST 17th, 2014
ALTES HALLENBAD (DISUSED INDOOR POOL)
FELDKIRCH (AUSTRIA)
7 WEEKS OF MUSIC
AND CULTURE
FROM POP TO NICHES
WWW.POOLBAR.AT
The poolbar-Festival
Nestling between three surrounding countries
(Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Germany) the
poolbar-Festival in Feldkirch, Austria, becomes - for
almost seven weeks - an annual international hotspot
for cultural exchanges & luscious parties. For its
location the poolbar team has found the disused
indoor pool, Altes Hallenbad, a charming building of
the early sixties, made of glass and steel.
Speciality & Particularity
Organisation-wise, the poolbar event bridges a gap
between festival and club: temporary, but personal.
On the one hand it uses room temporarily and
provides a concentrated, high-quality programme.
On the other hand - compared to big one-day and
weekend festivals - it offers hospitality, continuity and
change on a long-term basis. And social intercourse,
which is greatly is an integral element, as well as its
collaborators and artists.

Superstars & insiders‘ tips
The poolbar-Festival stands for lust for living,
extraordinary diversity and thrilling discoveries. For its
programme, the poolbar-Festival offers a wide cultural
diversity. Its multi-dimensional philosophy always
takes the world of the visitors into account. Music,
design, fashion or graphic arts are fundamental
features of our everyday life, regardless of where we
live.
Diversity & Variety
The programme is basically adjusted to the demands
and peculiarities of a pop or alternative cultural
event. The repertoire is therefore formed by diverse
categories, genres and degrees of familiarity. The
quality of the poolbar-Festival lies in its extraordinary
combination: International superstars (normally only
to be seen on the biggest stages in summer) meet
local art; legends meet up-and-coming artists; IndieRock meets HipHop meets Jazz; DJ meets Poetry
Slam; film meets theatre; art meets culture meets
science.
Why they love it
Artists love the intimate and personal atmosphere
as well as the loving hospitality and the relaxing,
picturesque landscape all around. Visitors and artists
will find a largely open and respectful atmosphere
which freely invites participation and analysis; a
friendly environment whose many facets all root in its
very own everyday life and do not represent a glossy
atmosphere. To quote Marcel Elsener of St.Gallen‘s
Saiten Magazine (Switzerland), The poolbar-Festival
is not a „bluff of some elitist twerps“ but „an offer for
everyone“ (July 2002).

Open Air Weekend
A brilliant place for one nice Open Air Weekend - in
2013 with Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls as
headliner.
Open Air Cinema
Another brilliant place for a bicicle driven Open Air
Cinema: The medieval centre of Feldkirch.

Art as part of a pop-Festival
At the poolbar-Festival, art is omnipresent and is
displayed to the visitors not only in the form of its
overall interior design. Artists are also invited to
carry out projects within the frame of the festival.
International artistic star Peter Kogler stands next to
young artistic rookies.
poolbar style
The poolbar needs to be understood as a piece of
art in itself. Its special appeal lies in the loving and
very detailed arrangement. From year to year the
appearance of the poolbar changes: graphic elements
like posters, flyers and mags; the unique poolbar
fashion gets awarded and reproduced by the annual
poolbar style competition.
Reinvented annually: architecture!
To get the best concepts for the specially
manufactured temporary interior design, the poolbarFestival invites entries for an architectural competition
in co-operation with the architectural institute of
Vorarlberg and the regional economic chamber.

Fame & Publicity
Since 1994, the poolbar-Festival has established itself
as the main popcultural festival in Western Austria
and as an
independent brand. It has achieved high recognition
not only in Austria but abroad as well. Festival
regulars
come from the local area as well as the neighbouring
countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Italy,
Liechtenstein or Slovakia.
The poolbar-Magazines (BigMag & MiniMag - total
circulation: 155,000) provide good opportunities to
promote the artists. The media are very busy, too.

„poolbar - thank you for reloading our batteries we were pumped with positive ions here“ (Joey
Burns, Calexico, 2009)
Poolbar, I miss you here in Berlin! (Felix Fulda via
Facebook 2011)
poolbar-Festival? I´m proud to be part of it. This
is one oft he most beautiful places in the world
that we have ever been to. Fuck – what a beautiful
place, what an amazing show, great people!
(Nathen Maxwell, Flogging Molly / Interview im
poolbar-Film 2010)
...intriguing length (six weeks in total!)
and fantastic line-up (...) I want to go
back, and I don‘t care who‘s playing.
… and it‘s simply a fact that the audience at the
Poolbar are just so goddamnned nice .. I mean,
really very friendly, (...) if the atmosphere is good
then you are open to the people connections
which make up the heart and soul of any good
festival. (Johnny Bliss, Radio FM4 (15.7.2011)

If you talk about the poolbar-Festival, you do not
only talk about pop music, but also about films,
literature, architecture, graphic design and raging
passion. Compared to all the fatiguing Festivals
around, the poolbar is an alien, which backs on
news in pop culture and valiantly proceeds in
seeking art in pop. (Johannes Stieger, woz - Die
Wochenzeitung, Switzerland, July 7th, 2005)
Cool at the pool - that´s easy this year. At least
if you go to the poolbar in Feldkirch to be cool.
There they are offering a cultural programme in
July and August against those dog days again. (...)
Musically the programme is exquisite and covers
a broad variety. Not only are concerts offered in
the former indoor swimming pool of the city, but
the artistic directors also offer a movie line, a DJline, Jazz brunches and fashion shows to name a
few. (Karl Fluch, Der Standard, 3.7.2008)
As a mixture of the fields of club, graphic design,
interior design, architecture, bar, gastronomy,
music festival, arts, daily and evening programme
once a year for 6 weeks in July/August they
convert the previous communal swimming
pool into a cultural point of intersection, to which
there is no denying of a good deal of elegance and
individuality. It is called poolbar, and to the string
pullers it means: total art work. (Uwe Viehmann,
Chief Editor „Spex“ 07/08 2004)
Posing im poolbar style: Frank Spilker (Die Sterne) / Crystal Fighters / Austrofred / Wolfram+Andrew Butler (Hercules & Love Affair) / Shirts 2012 // unten: Elektro Guzzi & Visuals von Farbenfratzen / Crowd
I suspect that more than a few people have
gone to the festival initially to see their favourite
bands, but then returned to the World with their
taste in music forever altered.
(...) my new favourite Austrian festival for
reasons of atmosphere, scenery AND music.
(...) my expectations had been left unreasonably
high (...) six week funkiness behemoth going
on in Feldkirch. (Johnny Bliss, Radio FM4
(15.7.2011)
We always got enthusiastic about this event!
(...) An internationally renowned Festival of
subcultures, which confidently can be called the
most exciting pop celebration between Zurich and
Vienna. While in large German cities they enviously
look at Feldkirch, bright-minded sponsors like the
Economic Chamber of Vorarlberg feel happy and
write: This all-over festival concept convinced us
with its versatility, its cultural openness and its high
acceptance it gets from its very demanding young
audience as well as from unconventional artists.
(Marcel Elsener, St. Galler Tagblatt, Switzerland.
Aug 6th, 2004)
With its poolbar-Festival Feldkirch doesn´t only
present itself as Austria‘s most western pop-cultural
hotspot. Architecture and interior design in the
former indoor swimming pool give the congenially
programmed festival an additional value, that
doesn´t enforce anyone to leave abruptly after the
last sound of a live-gig. Music is the central issue
of the festival, but in addition it is extraordinarily
refreshing to see people taking care of much more
than only the bare logistics of simply organising a
concert.
Vorarlberg! Shake your booty! (Der Standard, July
14th, 2006)
poolbar-Tasche 09 / Anzeigenschaltung in The Gap / poolcar
Founded in 1994 as an ambitious summer as an
artistic workshop series, the poolbar-Festival has
developed in the past 15 years to a highlight in the
cultural year of eastern Switzerland and western
Austria beyond party tents - one of the best
reasons not to go on holiday abroad. According to
the motto „music and culture from pop to niches“
founder and Co-CEO Herwig Bauer is delighted
to see, that especially the less-known bands
exceeded all expectations; a proof for the fact that
the festival has acquired a good reputation as a
guarantor of good quality. (Rafael Zeier, St.
Galler Tagblatt, 12.8.08)
