Cinema Notes
This month at Triskel Christchurch - which happens to be the second
anniversary since the opening of its cinema - we present the finest in
world cinema. From the light-hearted, thought-provoking and downright
beautiful, there is a wide spectrum of films to cater for every taste.

“Powerful and intensely watchable” Screen Daily
We are delighted to be screening I’m So Excited, the latest film
from acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, which The List
describes as “a camp, frothy piece of fun...hilarious”. It is a return to
the OTT comedies that Almodóvar made at the beginning of his career
and is a lot of fun. From France we have In The House starring Kristen
Scott Thomas and the new picture from the director of La Haine,
entitled Rebellion. There is also the Brazilian drama Neighbouring
Sounds, Harmony Korines’s nihilistic Spring Breakers, and Me And
You from Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci (Last Tango In Paris,
The Last Emperor). We also have the wonderful classic Singin’ In
The Rain and a special screening Baraka, digitally remastered for
maximum visual effect. The End Of The Earth Is My Home, from Irish
director Alan Lambert, is an experimental and visually-enthralling
picture which is presented by Black Sun Cinema.
111 mins - France 2012 - Subtitles - Dir: Régis Roinsard
Starring: Romain Duris, Déborah François and Bérénice Bejo
When Rose applies for a secretary’s job with a charismatic exsportsman, her prowess for typing reawakens his competitive spirit
as he seizes a chance for glory in the country’s hard-fought typing
contests.

Actress Award for her performance in this heartbreaking melodrama
following the love, marriage and collapse of a young couple.
It is April 1988 on the Ouvéa Island in the French colony of New
Caledonia. 30 police are kidnapped by Kanak separatists and in
response 300 special-forces operatives are sent in to restore order.

Life in a middle-class neighbourhood in present day Brazil takes an
unexpected turn after the arrival of an independent private security
firm. A slice of ‘Braziliana’, a reflection on history, violence and noise.
The combination of endearing performances, a razor-sharp script,
inspired direction and a dazzling array of song and dance sequences
means Singin’ In The Rain remains an exhilarating classic.

Their defencelessness in the face of danger provokes a general
catharsis that ends up becoming the best way to escape from the
idea of death. This catharsis, developed in the tone of a riotous,
moral comedy, fills the time with unforeseeable confessions that
help them forget the anguish of the moment and face the greatest
of dangers, that which they each carry within themselves.
