Seabury Hall Giving Report 2012 - 2013 MISSION Seabury Hall is an independent school affiliated with the Episcopal Church designed to: prepare students for successful college and university work; move students to develop mind, body, and soul; cause students to realize their responsibility to community. Schmidt Headmaster A s we enter Seabury Hall’s 50th year, we will celebrate the five decades of outstanding education which has produced more than 2000 Seabury Hall alumni. In 1964 when the school opened its doors as a boarding school for girls, its commitment was to provide a strong college preparatory program infused with strong character values. It transitioned into a co-educational day school which continued to grow its outstanding reputation, not only on Maui, but throughout the state and the country. The entire Seabury Hall community is grateful for the generosity of all who shared in the school’s vision and who truly understand the power of education. Our alumni share their gifts and talents around the world. They are quick to report that their success is, in no small part, due to the exceptional teachers, the fine program of instruction, extra-curricular opportunities and a caring community that teaches the importance of responsibility. Throughout the course of this school year we will be celebrating this milestone with students through special assemblies that focus on the history of the school and with celebrations that coincide with special events such as Aunt Kate Cooper’s birthday. It is important for us all to gain an understanding of how we evolved into the fine school that we are. The foundation is on the backs of those first students who were the pioneers that led the way to our current success. The Seabury Hall community is grateful to those who set the tone, had the courage to try another path, and inspired all to develop the mission that makes this school truly a special place. celebrating five decades of outstanding education p Our 50th year will culminate with a week-long celebration during the summer of 2014. This event will offer an opportunity for all who have participated in the school over these many years to celebrate together our success. It will undoubtedly be an extraordinary experience for all. Betsy Erdman I would like to finish by sharing a quote from a new teacher to Seabury Hall. This teacher has spent the past 12 years teaching in two well-known and highly respected independent schools. He stated, I finally feel like I have joined the big leagues. For all who have attended this school, you can be proud to know that you were part of the creation of a “major league team”. I am humbled and thankful to have been selected among my colleagues—an ensemble of stars—as the recipient of the Betsy Erdman Faculty Professional Development Award 2013. The privilege to teach talented children in a special community of dedicated and caring educators, parents, administrators, and trustees is unique and a gift. — Casey Asato I don’t consider Seabury Hall a school but rather a home. Pictured here with former Admissions Director Virgie Haines. Although Mallory attended Seabury Hall for only one year, she is one of the most active, dedicated and generous alumni. Mallory has served Seabury Hall selflessly for many years, both as an employee and as a volunteer. As a board member and as Alumni Coordinator, she helped to elevate the work of the Alumni Association Board. Mallory worked tirelessly on the Capital Campaign to raise money to build the new Upper School. She is responsible for the inception of Maunalei Notes. Mallory and her husband Pete, have two wonderful daughters, Lauren ‘03 and Marlise ‘07. Mahalo, Mallory! Seabury Hall would not be the same without you! 18 LaVelle Byers Allen is busy with her granddaughter, Celine, three days a week when they enjoy gardening, cooking, and long walks to play in the park. Fresh vegetables from her garden each day make for some yummy meals. She always seems to have visitors and she had a revolving door of houseguests in August including Monica Reynolds and Candy Rutherford ’71 Hibner, as well as friends from China. Monica Reynolds Gardner drove up to Portland to visit other Seabury Hall alumni and reminisce about back in the day. She is an avid golfer and enjoys life with her husband and two daughters who live nearby. She is planning a trip to Canada soon and is looking forward to that adventure. 1971 • “Candy Rutherford Hibner [email protected] Ginger Curtis (photo right) and Candy Rutherford Hibner met up one night when Ginger had a brief layover in Phoenix. They had not seen each other in 42 years, but time had not erased all the fun memories of their friendship at Seabury Hall, especially when they were roommates. Ginger and her husband are empty nesters as their daughter is attending college out of state. Candy Rutherford Hibner (above left) teaches part time in a private school and enjoys her afternoons pursuing hobbies such as scrapbooking. Their daughter was married this summer at a destination wedding at the beach, which brought back many wonderful memories of living near the ocean. Pat Hunt Passon and partner, Charlotte, love their decision to move north from California to Oregon. Pat is still working as a financial planner. Playing the ukulele is her latest interest and she improves every day. She also collects vintage fountain pens with the oldest being from 1933. I am going into my third year of veterinary school at Oklahoma State University. I am most interested in internal medicine and oncology, and hope to get an internship after graduating in May 2015! During my fourth year of school, we have to complete 16 weeks of hospital rotations at hospitals around the world, and I am considering doing two of my weeks at Animal Care Hospital in Kula.” An update from Jonathan Clark: “The majority of my efforts for the past four years have been directed towards my work as a visual artist, and I’ve been fortunate enough to show in a number of exhibits throughout Hawaii during this time. I recently moved back to Maui, after spending one year in Japan studying printmaking as a research student at Kyoto Seika University. The year in Japan absolutely flew by and sometimes feels like simply a dream – but I had the opportunity to learn countless new techniques and gain new insights into a culture that has become so much a part of my work as an artist. If you’d like to see some of my portfolio, check out jyclark.com. I am currently preparing (frantically!) for an upcoming solo show at the Hui No‘eau, which runs through September 20th. Those of you on Maui, I would be ecstatic if you have a chance to visit the show while it’s up! Other than that, I’m taking this year at home to figure out which direction to take from this point on. Being a visual artist is no easy task, but for those willing to work hard at it and keep a LOT of faith, the emotional fulfillment justifies all of those late nights in studio. Julia (Cost): I’m probably in the same boat as you! And by the way, your paintings are so fresh and inspiring! “ Heather Colvin shares, “I moved from Miami to Brooklyn almost a year ago and LOVE it! I work in Soho at Lululemon as a member of their leadership team and as one of our area’s community reps. I guess in a way I’m kind of using my journalism degree as I sometimes contribute to our national blog as well. It’s lots of yoga, yoga, yoga which I love because I’m a certified teacher and most of all it’s a pretty great community to be a part of. Also life is better when lived in stretchy black pants. My sister and I have been roommates since I got here. And my boyfriend James just recently moved in as well.” News from Riley Coon: “This has been the best year of my life! 1–I married the most amazing woman, Jenny Sawyer, on April 6! She’s originally from Marietta, Georgia and has been living on Maui since 2009. We did a honeymoon in Thailand, and a second one in Alaska. 2–I am officially an uncle to the daughter of my oldest sister, Mei Li ’99. I’ve been lucky to travel a bit to work on our projects in Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, and China, and I’ve met some really incredible people along the way. But the most exciting stuff for me right now is that I am starting to work with www.highfivesfoundation.com to get injured athletes on the water on a waveski. I recently spent some time with Grant Korgan on Maui and watched him rip and got to see what the waveski can do for someone who has had a seriously traumatic injury (korgmovement.com). I am starting to feel as though this is the direction I need to go for business and for my own personal fulfillment. O ur annual summer reunion took the shape of a giant block party this past June, sending alumni to the “streets” in search of fun, laughter, and some delicious tastings from a handful of Maui food trucks. The Cooper House parking lot was transformed with glowing lanterns and twinkling lights, though nothing compared to the smiles of over 150 people, who came together to share stories and reconnect. Partygoers milled about eating, toasting, and enjoying a Maui sunset that was nothing short of completely epic. The night air carried the bongo beats and lively Latin grooves of the 7-piece Dr.Nat & Rio Ritmo band—many succumbed to the music and danced barefoot on the grass. A highlight of the evening was watching Zak Wass ’03, who flew in from Boston, take the stage to jam with his former Rio Ritmo band mates. The Class of 1993 had a great turn out with over a quarter of the class participating, some like Elton Juter and Nikki Stubbs Broyard came all the way from the East Coast to attend. Even the holdouts of 2003, (ahem, Joe McFarlin and Jared Barros) couldn’t resist the fun and showed up at the last minute to join the party. The Class of 1983 may not have had a big showing but those who came represented!
