Evolution - Buffalo Arts Studio
evolution 20 years ago, a small group of artists approached me about sharing studio space. A few porch meetings evolved into a dream which began the search for a space for what would become Buffalo Arts Studio. The first group of artists planned out the programs that the community needed. The priorities were defined: artist studios, exhibitions, and education programs. No one in the group knew how to run a not-for-profit. As the leaseholder I felt some obligation to see this through – though I did not know what that meant nor what lay in front of me. In the early days, revolutions began easily and structure became very important. The first Board of Directors earned angels’ wings for creating the not-for-profit and getting the finances on track, while the first intern taught me about the importance of computers. The second Board of Directors got a full-blown halo for the creation of structure, writing the first major grants for programs, bringing contacts to the table, and designing and initiating a series of special events. The third Board of Directors... Needless to say, creating an arts organization is not easy. It took hundreds of artists, dozens of Board members, numerous corporate partners, the foundation community, a dedicated staff, hundreds of volunteers, individual donors, and the entire community to make Buffalo Arts Studio into what it is today − an integral part of our cultural landscape. In recent years, the studio has become nationally recognized for its exceptional programs and I am honored to have been a part of that. Thank you for making the dream a reality. Now the torch is passed to the next generation of dreamers and do-ers, and an exciting future is sure to unfold. It feels most appropriate to end a twenty-year career with this final exhibition, Evolution | Revolution. Criteria for selection include the works’ aesthetic quality, conceptual and technical innovation, and ability to critically address current issues. The curatorial pairing of solo shows by theme, style, medium, and/or subject matter results in cohesive exhibitions that promote diversity, challenge our preconceived notions, and awaken our senses. BAS is committed to developing clear and concise didactic materials, which provide viewers with comprehensive explanations of artists’ influences and methods along with subjective interpretations of the works, encouraging public interaction and creating a dialogue surrounding the art and its possible social and political implications. The internationally recognized program is an integral part of the cultural collateral of the region, with several recently exhibited artists featured prominently in major publications such as Art in America, Canadian Art, Public Art Review, Sculpture Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and numerous contemporary art biennials. Significant exhibitions featured at BAS include Buffalo’s multi-venue biennial Beyond/In Western New York, Dina Recanati’s Passage, and Takashi Horisaki’s site-specific work Social Dress Buffalo: The Past Reflecting the Future. Through collaborations with BAS’s education program and local organizations such as Buffalo ReUse, the Gloria J. Parks Community Center, Literacy Volunteers of Western New York, People’s Park, PUSH Buffalo, and countless area high schools and universities, the exhibition program continues to serve our community. Ongoing major support for the exhibition program for the past twenty years has been provided by M&T Bank, with additional support from Mark and Mariana Botero-Chason, Cameron Baird Foundation, DoubleTree Club by Hilton Hotel Buffalo Downtown, Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, Elma Press, Erie County Cultural Funding, Hodgson Russ LLP, New York State Council on the Arts Visual Arts Program, Phillips Lytle LLP, Tri-Main d te en em pl im n sit io 70 po ,5 er $1 06 tO ffic To t al bu dg et en pm lo ve De ed et pl m co als ur m 2 De br sig oc n hu by re C , a ro nd wle lat y W er , w eb eb b in sit clu e de s Fi lo r go “V st s , in p ce ec nt ia ”f le un ve dr nt: ais er at Pfi ef er Th ea tre pl St ec ree ts t c om rt ro j t/A tp re e ar St ic bl ain M pu 9 9 an exh ib d in itio te r n ns at fea io na tur la er rti eg st s iona 19 9 8 l, et na es tio na l, Development LLC, and United Graphics. Hamister, The John R. Oishei Foundation, Joy Family Foundation, The Margaret L. Wendt Foundation, and Tri-Main Development LLC, the education department of Buffalo Arts Studio came to fruition as a direct outgrowth of the Project CREATE Mural Program. It was believed that in order to have a strong impact on area youth, long-term relationships needed to be developed and regularly held classes would help to achieve this goal. BAS’s education program has since provided professional arts training to youth and adults for over a decade. Over 500 classes have been held, with enrollment totaling 3,000 since its inception. The classroom instructors are foremost in their fields and include artists, college professors, and high school art teachers from the region. Class offerings range from drawing and painting to printmaking, photography, and portfolio development. In 2008 the program expanded once again to offer professional development courses for artists − including estate planning, marketing, portfolio development, cataloging, and intellectual property. Founded with the idea that, in order for students to create, discuss, and appreciate art, they must develop strong skills in observation, analysis, and interpretation, the emphasis for the youth program is to offer classes with a solid basis in core drawing skills that are essential for entrance into art schools and colleges. Ultimately, a major goal of the youth classes is to provide each student with a strong comprehensive art portfolio that may be used for college portfolio submissions, New York State Summer School for the Arts portfolio submissions, entrance interviews for the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, and scholarship opportunities. This program has received ongoing support over the past ten years from BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, East Hill Foundation, First Niagara Bank, General Mills Foundation, HSBC Bank, Josephine Goodyear Foundation, Marks Family itt m m co ur e 43 lll $2 st a et Pa To t al bu dg d an es at a journey through Tibet’s history ,8 95 S se itia rve le sa va s lu Ar at ts io pa n an ce d ad on vis ar or ch ite ct BA in Pl A Long Look Homeward fo r Di O rec u HH tre tor w a Th ch ork e G Da ro s w lai up ith La on Bu ff m a’s 33 p alo vis roj Co ec m it ts mu fo r nity 20 06 ee Foundation, and New York State Council on the Arts Special Arts Services. 86 ,9 08 $2 et dg bu tio ra bo lla co rk Pa le’ s op Pe 20 07 Recycled Glass Art Sculpture Self-Portraits Silk Scarf Painting Spoken Word Video Watercolor Wire Sculpture Yoga for Teens al Acrylic Painting Artful Paper Puppets Assemblage Bargue’s Drawing Black & White Photography Block Printing Bookmaking Business Baking Collage Collagraph Print Computer Animation Digital Photography Drawing Concepts Drawing Fundamentals Glass Art Graffiti Design Hand-Building Pottery Korean Cut Paper Arts Mixed Media Drawing Mold Making Monoprints Mosaics Mural Art Oil Painting Paint on Fiber Performance Photo Drawing PMC Jewelry Poetry Slam Portfolio Preparation Portraiture Painting Pottery Throwing Printmaking To t Cataloging for the Artist Copyright Rights for the Artist Dealing with Agents, Galleries, and Consignments Digital Documentation Leveraging Social Media Making Your Art Pay Open Critiques Portfolios and Proposals Tax and Estate Planning for the Artist Web Design Be ex yo hi nd bi tio /In n We cu s ra ter te n d N by ew Br Yo oo rk ke 20 0 Fi tz 7 pa tri ck Youth and Adult Classes n Professional Development Classes for Artists Project CREATE Mural Program In 1993, the Project CREATE (Community Revitalization through Environmental Art and Team Efforts) Mural Program was formed as a city-wide program that teamed professional artists with youth to create murals throughout the city of Buffalo. Goals of the mural program included beautifying Buffalo’s urban neighborhoods, providing residents a renewed sense of ownership within their communities, and giving area youth a sense of their ability to contribute in a positive way to both their own futures and those of their communities. During its tenure from 1993 to 2005, 54 murals were completed with more than 10,000 area youth collaborating with artists on designs tailored to each individual site. Themes varied from urban street scenes, to depictions of Jerusalem painted in the dining room hall for the Jewish Community Center as part of Camp Shiloh, to environmentally themed murals. As a result of the numerous murals throughout the city, the Project CREATE Mural Program was able to nurture a greater sense of self, community, 60 ,5 44 $3 et dg To t al bu lll an ia cu Tr im m Th e Im El rat a e M d gine an u b r s d Ha eo y B y Li r F llw ra oo ne all nc ke gro s Co isco Fitz up e nt O p em lle atri xhib c r iti k po y ra Die wit on ry g h Ar o R ts Ce iver nt a er 20 08 Ju st in cu ayb Th ra e i om te t r d u p by ns son Br in ’s e oo the xh ke ib f Fi ami itio tz n l y pa Af tri Hi rica ck m n ala W ya ell P n In roj st e itu ct te wi th and appreciation of art for area youth. Over 135 youth have participated in the past ten years. Interested students are interviewed by the education coordinator, present their art portfolios, and submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher. Once in the program, they receive three intensive six-week art courses throughout the year, free of charge, until high school graduation. In addition to traditional media, such as drawing and painting, students work with non-traditional media and are taught necessary skills, such as how to photograph artworks and write artist statements. Other activities include visiting museums and galleries, meeting with local artists, unique opportunities to work with visiting exhibiting artists, and assistance in finding summer jobs in the arts. Students are paired with mentors starting in their junior year of high school to aid in their transition to college. Once enrolled, college students can earn art supplies for every “A” they receive. By encouraging self-esteem and helping to build relationships through a variety of experiences related to the visual arts, the Jump Start Mentorship program offers a unique experience for area youth. yo cu tern nd/ ra rat atin In W isi ed g e ng C st b fu y C urr ern nd o en ri t Ne s w Wo s e w ith xh Yo l Al ff; B ibit rk 2 br i A S on 01 ig ht 0: t a To -K ke ta no s lb le x ud Ar ad t G ro ge t$ all le er 34 y 4, 43 6 Be Al Ta ka s Th e-s hi H p e o cu e ra Pas cific rasa te t R a ki d by efle rtw ’s re Co ct ork sid ri ing So en W c ol the cial y a ff Fu D nd tu res re s Bu ffa sit by d te ra Be cu 20 10 ili Li u’s ex h Co ibiti ri on W ol One ff , An ot he r lo : This program has been generously supported by Key Bank. en ce id re s To t al et dg bu $5 42 09 ,1 s rT fo n itio Ev Th olu cu e 2 tion ra 0t te h | Re A d by nn volu Co iver tio ri sa n: W ry ol ff Exh ib an Hi We m ala ll P ya roje n c In t a st itu nd te Tre e ric Af in lV ts tis ar ith w 38 ia an Tr im 20 11 ib et Revolution Revolutio Evolution ev·o·lu·tion [ev-uh-loo-shuh n] noun any process of formation or growth; a process of gradual, peaceful, progressive change or development, as in social institutions; a motion incomplete in itself, but combining with coordinated motions to produce a single action, as in a machine rev·o·lu·tion [rev-uh-loo-shuh n] noun the thorough replacement of an established government by the people governed; a procedure or course, as if in a circuit, back to a starting point; a far-reaching and drastic change, esp in ideas, methods, etc; movement in or as if in a circle; one complete turn in such a circle Upon consideration of the title for this commemorative exhibition, it occurred to me that these two powerful words, though technically disparate in meaning, could be used interchangably in describing Buffalo Arts Studio’s past, present, and future. The term “evolution” speaks to BAS’s humble yet bold beginnings and steady maturity over the past twenty years, the product of countless collaborations and dedicated individuals working together toward a centralized vision —“a community of artists…artists for a community”— while “revolution” points to BAS’s impending transitional change: the poignant retirement of Founder/Director Joanna Angie, whose unrivaled passion and commitment have generated an organization well-equipped to survive on its own, and the promotion of dedicated staff members willing to lead with fresh energy and enthusiasm. Jointly, Evolution | Revolution alludes to the return of over sixty artists to the studio, coming back full circle to the place where many of them launched their careers with their first solo shows; hence rather than approaching the exhibition as a retrospective, it seemed appropriate to invite the artists to present new works, reflecting this cycle of growth. The resulting juxtaposition of works by emerging to internationally established artists of diverse ages, nationalities, and ethnicities, in a range of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, collage, ceramics, mixed media, video, and performance, echoes BAS’s long-standing principles of inclusivity and experimentation. It has been an honor to organize an exhibition of this magnitude: sifting through files and boxes of photographs, postcards, catalogues, and memorabilia; archiving over 160 solo and group exhibitions; and taking on the seemingly impossible task of selecting fewer than seventy out of hundreds of talented past and present resident and exhibiting artists to submit works. The process has not only provided me with insight into the astonishingly prolific history of the organization, but has challenged and encouraged me to cultivate the established ambition, creativity, and vigor in all of BAS’s future artistic endeavors. Mr. McLane is a vice president in the small loans department of a local bank. In his right hand, which does not show in the painting, he holds a plastic bag from Wegmans that previously held dog food and that is carried to pick up any items the dogs might leave on the grass. The scene is set in Delaware Park in July of 2010. The dogs at leashes’ ends are named Rocky (the pug-looking dog) and Mister (the larger). When the McLaneses got married, they decided that they did not want a dog for the usual reason that people do not want dogs: the care and feeding, the hair, the training, and the necessity of putting the dog in a kennel should they travel. But they had a daughter EvolutionRevolutio | The 20th Anniversary Exhibition continued Revolutio named Shannon who begged for a dog, studied breeds, studied caring, and volunteered to take a continued interest in the upkeep of an animal. For a period of time her parents tried to discourage her, but finally relented as Shannon began to save up to buy a dog. Mrs. McLane insisted on a SMALL dog, which resulted in Rocky. True to her word, Shannon took great care of the dog, which, after her guidance, began, as dogs will, to take care of itself, to the extent that Rocky became a member of the family, particularly ingratiating itself by greeting each member of the family as they entered the house with a friendly wagging and jumping, indicating an unspoken happiness in seeing someone’s return. This led, surprisingly, to Mrs. McLane desiring a second dog to keep Rocky company and to double the enjoyment of canine ownership; actually, though she would not admit it, she wanted a dog ‘of her own.’ Thus we have the purchase of Mister, the larger of the two dogs in the painting. Normally, the three McLaneses take the dogs for a walk in the park on a summer evening, but this evening Shannon is away at camp and Mrs. McLane (Ethel) is attending a yoga class on Elmwood, so Mr. McLane has the responsibility. Shannon will go to college, get a job in Spokane, and get married, leaving the tending of the dogs, which she will miss, to her parents, who will grow old, as will the dogs, so in a few years one will see the McLaneses, old and gray, walking two old and gray dogs, no longer pulling on the leash but plodding along behind. The two other figures belong to Sally Maserowski and Ulysses Goldman (go figure), neighbors on Crescent. Born within a week of each other and next-door neighbors, they have played together since, as is said, day one. Most of their friends are at cottages or at summer camp or, if they are old enough, working at summer jobs. Today they are playing keep-away with a soccer ball, as they both have a talent for the game and will play on their respective varsity teams in high school. They are excellent students at City Honors and share a closeness of life, as would a sister and brother. While they will go to different colleges – Fredonia and Canisius – they will remain close and, while they occasionally date, it is for the sake of the company rather than indicating romance. After college they will each attend graduate school in their respective majors – business and education – and will part, although staying in contact for birthdays and holidays at home. Each will get married and attend the other’s wedding, one of them will get divorced, and they will have children and send photos of the offspring, as well as correspond with one another regarding the developing lives of the siblings. They will grow old, their children will leave their nests to follow their own lives, and within a week of each other, the respective spouses of Ulysses and Sally will die. These events will bring Ulysses and Sally back together and they will marry, sell their homes, move into an assisted living facility, and live happily ever after.” So there you have the TITLE, which covers the past, the present, and the future.
