ir steuern auf Naxos zu. Das Meer ist
spiegelglatt und von intensivem,
lichtem Blau. In einer Meerenge fällt der
Anker. Kaum im Wasser gleiten wir von den
blankgewaschenen Felsenformationen
abwärts in die Tiefe. Schon nach wenigen
Metern tauchen unter uns die enormen
Ausmaße eines Wracks auf. Das Sonnenlicht
malt helle Strahlen auf das Schiffsdeck.
Fast keine Strömung heute! Fasziniert
schweben wir entlang der Reling – inmitten
von Schwärmen von Fischen! Wir entdecken
Goldstriemen und kleine Brassen, aber auch
Schrift- und Streifenbarsche sowie violette
Seesterne auf dem Schiff und grüne Seeigel
im Sand. Für Fotografen eine Spielwiese!
Zurück an Land schwärmen wir weiter. Die
Kykladeninseln sind fantastisch, die schönsten
Inseln Griechenlands. Tolle Weitsicht, tief­
blaues, kristallklares Wasser und faszinierende
Tauchspots! Weit schweift der Blick über
ausgedehnte Sandstrände und faszinierende
Steilküsten, dahinter sanfthügelige Landschaften im hellen Licht der Kykladen und weiße
Dörfer wie hingetupft zwischen Olivenhainen,
Getreidefeldern und Weinplantagen.
Bereits in der Antike waren Produkte der
Kykladeninseln begehrt: Von Paros etwa
stammt einer der teuersten Marmorsteine der
Welt; da er fast durchsichtig ist, wurde er für
große Kunst verwendet, für die Skulptur der
Aphrodite von Milos oder des Hermes von
Praxiteles. Marmor so durchschimmernd, dass
Licht ihn bis zu 3,5 mm durchdringt. Noch
heute strahlt die Insel in gleißendem Weiß,
Weiße Kirchen und Häuser, viel Blau und eine Taverne am Meeresufer: So lieben wir Griechenland. ///

die Kirchenplätze in Marmor gefasst, die
Treppen und Böden der Häuschen weiß
gefliest.
Lichtes Strahlen auch unter Wasser, so
weit das Auge reicht. Die Sichtweite beträgt
bis über 30 Meter. Die Pandaronissi-Inseln mit
Pandros, Tigana und Glaropoda zählen mit
ihren Grotten, Stalaktiten und Luftkuppeln zu
den schönsten Tauchplätzen Griechenlands.
Der Unterwasser-Eingang in die Grotte von
Pandros befindet sich auf etwa fünfzehn Meter
Tiefe. Das Tageslicht fällt weit hinein. Wir
tauchen in einer großen Kuppel auf, die an die
zehn Meter hoch sein muss. Gigantisch!
An den Felswänden prangt das Leben, satte
Farben wie an einem tropischen Riff bedecken
das Gestein. Orange, strahlendes Gelb,
intensives Rot, Anemonen und Schwämme,
wohin das Auge sieht. Vor Naxos gibt es
nahezu unbetauchte Riffe und auch vor
Langsam gleitet der Taucher zum
Schiffswrack hinunter. /// The diver

Mykonos liegen interessante Wracks, wie die
1926 gesunkene Peloponnesos, heute eines der
farbenprächtigsten künstlichen Riffe des
Mittelmeeres, oder die Anna II, ein erst 1995
gesunkenes Cargoschiff auf etwa 30 Meter
Tiefe.
Die Wracks sind belebt! Hier fühlen sich
viele ortstreue Fische wohl, wohnen Krabben,
Bärenkrebse, Muränen und Oktopoden.
Tintenfisch & Co gibt es auch an Land reichlich: Die kleinen Fischerstädtchen der Kykladen sind für ihre Seafood-Küche berühmt.
Der Fang wird direkt von den Fischerbooten in
die Küchen der Tavernen gebracht. Hier ist
immer Saison für Fisch!

e head in the direction of Naxos. The sea
around us is as smooth as a mirror, and an
intense, bright blue. We drop anchor in a sound.
Barely touching the water, we slide silently down
from the salt-bleached rock formations in the watery
depths. After a few minutes, the gargantuan
proportions of a wreck beneath become darkly, silently
clear. The sun paints rays of light on the ship’s deck.
Almost no current today! Fascinated, we float along
the rail amongst shoals of fish. We discover salema
and small bream moving alongside painted and
striped bass, purple starfish on the ship and green sea
urchins in the sand. It’s a playground for photographers! We continue to swim in and out of the
schools of fish, moving back towards land. The
Cyclades islands are simply fantastic – the most
beautiful islands in Greece. The waters around the
islands offer amazing visibility, deep blue, crystalclear water and fascinating dive sites. Your gaze
sweeps wide, along endless sandy beaches, up
fascinating steep cliffs, before gently rolling, hilly
landscapes bathed in the bright light of the Cyclades

and white villages nestling between olive groves,
wheat fields and vineyards.
The products of the Cyclades were already much
sought-after in ancient times: Paros, for instance,
produces the most expensive marble in the world.
Since it is almost transparent, it has often been used
in great art, such as the sculpture of Aphrodite by
Milos, or of Hermes by Praxiteles. This marble is so
translucent that light passes through it up to 3.5 mm.
To this day, the island radiates a gleaming white, the
church squares prepared in marble, the steps and
floors of the tiny houses covered in white tiles.
Just as the light also shines beneath the water as
far as the eye can see. Visibility is up to 30 metres or
more. With their caves, stalactites and air domes, the
Pandaronissi Islands boast some of the loveliest dive
sites in Greece. The underwater entrance to the cave of
Pandros is located at a depth of around fifteen metres.
Daylight falls far within it. We dive up in a large
dome, which must be at least ten metres high.
Gigantic! Life hangs resplendent on the rock walls,
the rich colours covering the stone as if on a tropical
reef: orange, gleaming yellow, intense red. Anemones
and sponges wherever you look. There are almost
undiscovered reefs off the coast of Naxos, and off
Mykonos, too, interesting wrecks such as that of the
Peloponnesos, which sank in 1926 and is now one of
most brightly-coloured artificial reefs in the
Mediterranean, or the Anna II, a cargo ship only
discovered in 1995, at a depth of around 30 metres.
Every one of them is a vast myriad of life. Fish
local to the area feel at home, and they are home to
crabs, lobsters, moray eels and octopus. There are also
large quantities of squid and the like on land: the
small fishing villages of the Cyclades are famed for
their seafood cuisine. The catch is brought directly
from the fishing boats into the kitchens of the
tavernas. In these parts, it’s always time for fish.
