I amBrtheead of Life THE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION Celebrating 20 Years of Blessings 1985 - 2005 2005 Annual Report I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst. John 6:35 Mis ion Statement The mission of The Catholic Foundation is to financially support the spiritual, educational and social needs of our Catholic community. Catholics are called by God to protect human life, to promote dignity, to defend those who are poor, to strengthen the Church and to seek the common good. The Catholic Foundation exists to help Catholics live out this sacred mission of the Church, through the wise stewardship and thoughtful sharing of their financial resources. We provide opportunities for people to permanently fund the causes that are most meaningful to them, thus supporting and amplifying the work of parishes, schools, ministries and organizations. We are here to help donors often accomplish more with their gift than they thought possible. We are here to serve the Church. A Message From OurBishop My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, When Pope John Paul II declared the Year of the Eucharist, he called upon each of us to renew our gratitude for the holiest and most precious sacrament of all. As I look through this 2005 annual report of The Catholic Foundation, I am inspired by the faithfilled men and women who express their gratitude through their unselfish giving for the good of their brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ. The descriptions of the funds, and the long and diverse list of recipients of these funds in this report are all reflections of a people who truly celebrate Christ’s love and blessings as the Bread of Life. I pray that you will be inspired by the good works that are being accomplished through the generosity of the Foundation’s many donors. Each of these individuals has made a difference in the lives of others by heeding our Lord’s call to reflect the Eucharist. 4 I can think of few better ways to manifest the gift of the Bread of Life than by serving as ambassadors of His message and good stewards of the world He has entrusted to our care. As you encounter the living Christ throughout the coming year, I invite you to express your gratitude by sharing your blessings in any way that the Holy Spirit inspires you. May God continue to bless and keep you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Frederick F. Campbell, D.D., Ph.D. Bishop of Columbus I am the Bread of Life A Message From OurBoard Dear Friends, On behalf of our entire Board of Trustees, I am honored and pleased to report on the status of The Catholic Foundation as we celebrate 20 years of helping people “do something beautiful for God.” This has been another year of growth and inspiration. Forty-eight new funds were established this year, bringing the assets managed by the Foundation to over $94 million. More importantly, we were blessed to distribute more than $3.5 million to the parishes, schools, agencies and organizations that serve our diocese. Since 1985, with an initial $1 million in assets, we have been blessed to distribute over $28 million to our Catholic community. This is truly a remarkable testament to the goodness of the hundreds of men and women who have been and continue to be associated with The Catholic Foundation. In this, the Year of the Eucharist, we are renewing our deep commitment to the blessings that have been entrusted to us. We recognize that all we have and all we are, are gifts from God, freely given to us, not for our possession, but for our responsibility to be good stewards. As we continue on our path of financially supporting the spiritual, educational and social needs in our Catholic community, we give thanks for the gift of the Eucharist, and pray that this sacrament will inspire each of us to achieve even greater acts of stewardship in the coming year. Sincerely, Carlos Cherubin, Chairman Board of Trustees THE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION Annual Report 2005 5 Celebrating 20 Years of Bles ings Board of Trustees Frederick F. Whether you’re a young family just starting out, or you’re in the middle of your retirement years, The Catholic Foundation can help you find a meaningful way to benefit others through your philanthropy. Legacy giving is not only for those with wealth. The value of the gift isn’t measured by the size or the amount, but rather by the amount of heart put into it. Depending on your needs, you may choose a giving method that can offer significant tax advantages, reduce future estate taxes, and/or provide a steady income for you and your loved ones. Some of the options include: charitable bequests in your will, memorial funds that honor family members or other loved ones, charitable gift annuities, trusts, donations of property or investments, designating the Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or using a life insurance policy to make a gift. If you would like to leave a legacy of love and pass on the gift of faith, but have questions on how to meet your specific financial and charitable goals, call The Catholic Foundation. We will personalize an example for your situation and provide you with other planning ideas that meet your objectives. You or your professional advisor may contact us at 614-443-8893. THE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION Annual Report 2005 13 How to Establish an Endowment Making Basic Decisions Establishing an endowment with the Catholic Foundation represents a significant act of charity. We make the process of establishing a fund as simple as possible. There are only a few basic decisions you need to make: • How much do you wish to contribute to open your fund? • How do you wish to make your contribution? With cash? Appreciated stock? Real estate? Or, with some other asset? • Do you want the fund to be in your name? That of a relative or friend? In memory of someone special in your life? Or some combination of these? • What charitable cause(s) do you want to benefit from of your fund? • Do you want to start the fund now? Or, do you prefer to receive an income from your fund during your lifetime and have the charitable distributions start at your death? Once you have made these decisions, let us know. We will sit down with you and discuss your choices. Based on our discussion, we will draw up a simple, two page endowment agreement that details your charitable intentions. You and an officer of the Foundation sign the agreement and your fund is ready to receive charitable contributions. It is as simple as that! 14 Adding to an Existing Fund The Foundation may already hold an endowment fund that benefits your parish, school or favorite Catholic charity. If that is the case, you might wish to add to that fund rather than open one of your own. You decide how much you would like to contribute, if you want to do it now or at your death, and if you wish to use cash or other appreciated assets to make your gift. Then, notify us of your decisions and we will take care of the rest. Establishing an Endowment Through Your Estate Bequests such as this qualify donors for automatic membership in The Kyrie Bequest Society. Please look for information about the society on another page in this report, or call us at 614443-8893 to discuss any questions you may have. I am the Bread of Life Methods of Giving A gift through the Catholic Foundation occurs when a donor decides to transfer ownership of something with monetary value either now or at the time of death. A donor may direct the benefits of a gift to one or more beneficiaries: for example, a parish, school, program, cause or group. Some donors prefer their gifts be added to the Church and Community Fund at the Catholic Foundation, thereby providing support for the greatest needs within the diocese year after year. The Foundation offers an extensive array of methods of giving to meet its donors’ charitable and financial needs. Here is a chart of some of the most commonly used giving options. Type of Gift Form of Gift Benefit to Church Benefit to You Outright Gift • Cash • Stocks/securities • Real estate • Insurance • Vehicle • Perpetual income • Interest income used by parishes, schools and organizations in the Diocese • Income tax deduction • No capital gains tax on appreciated gifts Bequest • Cash • Real estate • Personal property • Percentage of estate • Remainder of estate • Remainder of estate after other obligations have been satisfied • Bequest will be held in perpetuity and invested to fund Church needs as designated by the donor • Possible estate tax deduction • Opportunity to make a perpetual gift Charitable Gift Annuities • Cash • Stocks/securities • Real estate • Cash • Stocks/securities • Real estate • Possible estate tax deduction • Opportunity to make a perpetual gift Insurance Policies • Name Catholic Foundation as policy owner and/or beneficiary • Upon the death of the donor or last surviving annuitant remaining assets generate interest income for the Church • Opportunity to make substantial future gift to Church at current manageable cost • Income tax deduction for value of the policy when transferred • Premium payments may be deducted as gifts Charitable Remainder Trusts • Cash • Stocks/securities • Real estate • Foundation receives full face value of policy upon death of the donor, or may receive current surrender value prior to donor’s death • Variable or fixed income • Option to defer income • Income tax deduction • Reduction of estate taxes • No capital gains tax on appreciated gift (or deferral, in some instances) Charitable Lead Trusts • Cash • Stocks/securities • Real estate • Foundation receives substantial future gift to support the work of the Church and the charities named by the donor • At end of trust period, principal returns to donor or heirs • Principal can pass to others with little or no shrinkage • Tax deduction Retirement Plan/IRA • Name Catholic Foundation as beneficiary of death benefit • Income for duration of trust helps Church meet spiritual and human needs that exceed the capabilities of most parishes, schools and organizations • Opportunity to make a major gift • Estate and income tax savings 15 THE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION Annual Report 2005 Special Funds Donor Advised Funds A Donor-Advised Fund is a giving option offered by the Catholic Foundation that some of our donors have found to be a convenient and flexible alternative for their charitable giving. With a Donor-Advised Fund, the donor may make substantial gifts to the fund in profitable years and/or periodic gifts to the fund over a period of years. Then, when the donor wishes to make charitable contributions, they advise the Foundation regarding the charitable programs and organizations they would like supported by the fund. 16 The Catholic Foundation fully invests the assets and the donor is able to make suggestions about distributions of both income and principal from the fund. Therefore, over time the donor has more money to contribute to charity than would have been available through their original gift(s). Any person or corporation may create a Donor-Advised Fund by contributing either current gifts and/or future gifts through wills, trusts and bequests. Gifts may be in the form of cash, securities or other appreciated property. Distributions from a Donor-Advised Fund may be directed to either Catholic or nonCatholic charities. Uritus Family Fund Ginger West Fund Tiffanee & Warner Workman Fund I am the Bread of Life The Church and Community Fund From the very beginning, The Catholic Foundation has concentrated on establishing endowments to benefit specific Catholic programs and priorities. Many of the schools, parishes and organizations within our diocese are direct beneficiaries of Foundation endowments. The increasing number of these individual endowments has helped make The Catholic Foundation successful in its mission. The true measure of any foundation’s success, however, cannot be defined by the assets and number of funds, but also by the good works that are made possible from their resources. For that reason, The Catholic Foundation established The Church and Community Fund, an endowment that will allow us to increase our ability to do good works…to fund programs and projects currently without funds to address specific needs. The Church and Community endowment will allow the Foundation to reach out with funding support to the areas of greatest need within the diocese that may otherwise receive little or no funding. We hope that generous individuals throughout the diocese will consider making a gift of any size to this very special fund. 17 Supporting Organizations Many families for whom philanthropy is a priority believe that a private family foundation is the only means available to establish a tax-advantaged vehicle to accomplish their family’s charitable giving. However, a Supporting Organization of the Catholic Foundation allows a family many more tax advantages than a private foundation while still allowing the family to make the investment decisions and to be involved in grant-making. In addition, many of the administrative details and required reports can be handled by the Catholic Foundation. The Foundation is available to help donors establish endowments to benefit whatever charitable cause they designate. The Foundation paid out over $3.5 million in distributions and grants this fiscal year. Since 1985, the Foundation has provided more than $28 million to support the spiritual, educational and social needs of our Catholic community. In this fiscal year, we added 55 new funds, bringing the total number to 425 accounts. Investment Philosophy The Foundation’s Board of Trustees views its role as steward of the Foundation’s funds as a sacred trust. It retains the services of four investment advisors, providing its fundholders with the highest caliber of money management in addition to a broad diversity of investment styles to maximize investment return while safeguarding principal. The Foundation is committed to an investment philosophy rooted in the long-term growth potential for the endowment funds entrusted to it. For this reason, the Foundation utilizes a distribution policy geared to providing for long-term growth. Each year the Foundation sets a distribution rate that provides income for the stated purposes of the endowment fund and also provides for a return to principal. Here’s how it works: An endowment fund is established at the Foundation with a deposit of $100,000. No other deposits are ever made to the fund. Let’s assume an average annual rate of return of 8.5%–5% of that return withdrawn each year for current needs and 3.5% reinvested as principal. In year one, the fund looks like this: Beginning Balance $100,000 5% Distribution $5,000 Amt. Reinvested $3,500 Ending Balance $103,500 44 In twenty years, the amount of the original deposit has almost doubled, and a total of over $141,000 has been returned in distributions. Beginning Balance $192,248 5% Distribution $9,612 Amt. Reinvested $6,729 Ending Balance $198,977 In thirty years, the value of the fund is over $425,000, and the annual distributions total approximately $248,000. Beginning Balance $414,639 5% Distribution $20,731 Amt. Reinvested $14,512 Ending Balance $429,151 Continuing this example, after a little more than 60 years the fund’s value will exceed $1 million. In addition, over $1 million in annual distributions will have been released to provide for immediate needs. The Catholic Foundation strictly adheres to morally and socially responsible guidelines in accordance with those set forth by the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops.
