The mountains: Vanoise National Park
Vanoise National Park
Protecting the natural environment for more than 50 years…
Created in 1963, Vanoise National Park covers the mountain range between the Tarentaise Valley to the
north and the Maurienne Valley to the south. Extending to the Italian border, it shares a 14 kilometer
boundary with Italy’s Grand Paradis National Park, sister park since 1972. The two parks make up the
largest natural protected area in Western Europe. More than 2/3 of Pralognan-la-Vanoise is located in the
park’s most protected area (“the central zone”). Pralognan is one of the main gateways to this natural
wonder.
In such a spectacular protected wilderness environment, a specific code of conduct is enforced:
mountain biking and camping are regulated, hiking off trail or with your dog is prohibited…
Feel free to ask the National Park hostess any questions regarding regulations.
maison du parc
The Tourism Office reception desk and National Park
visitor center are located here.
In addition, enjoy:
> an exhibit on the Salt Road,
> temporary exhibits all summer long,
> occasional film showings.
Open 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:30 to 19:00.
Outings and ACTIVITIES
led by park rangers
All summer long park rangers will enthusiastically
introduce you to the wonders of the park.
Most outings are free.
Free evening talks
After watching a nature film (in the “salle polyvalente”
multi-purpose hall), park rangers will gladly answer all
of your questions.
Program available in the Petit Journal.

Pralognan-la-Vanoise, a hiker’s paradise…
Safety
Dear vacationers and hikers, here are a few
recommendations to ensure that you take full
advantage of your stay!
> Let your friends, family, or your accommodations
know where you plan to hike.
> Leave early. You will enjoy the cool morning
temperatures and increase your chance of seeing the
area’s wild animals.
> Do not overestimate your abilities. Humility is
important part of a safe approach to the mountains.
> Carry a set of warm clothes and a waterproof jacket
in your pack in case the weather changes quickly.
> Before leaving, check the 24-hour weather forecast
posted in front of the Tourism Office, or call Meteo
France +33 (0) 899 71 02 73 for a recording (in
French) with the 7-day forecast.
> If the going gets tough, know when to turn around
instead of pushing to continue in spite of wellestablished safety protocols.
> In the event of an accident, if your cell phone has
reception, call +33 (0)4 79 08 29 30 (permanent local
emergency rescue number) or 112.
CAF Insurance
Insurance through the French Alpine Club (CAF)
provides coverage for personal liability, and search
and rescue costs both summer and winter. This yearly
renewable insurance covers you in France and abroad.
It also allows discounts on group outings with the
resort’s guide service, as well as discounts in mountain
huts.

Discovery trails…
4 designated interpretive trails with educational signs and 1 overlook, to enjoy as a family.
The mountains: Discovery trails
Prioux promenade: learning
about life in an alpine pasturE
The gateway to Vanoise National Park, the bountiful
natural environment unfolds before you along an
extraordinary trail up Chavière Valley. Dauntingly
awe-inspiring with the range’s high summits towering
in every direction, and yet pleasantly tranquil with
quaint hamlets and grazing herds, the valley reveals
the secrets of life in an alpine pasture. A genuine
invitation to escape! In Prioux, a small hamlet at
1700m elevation, nature reigns and humans learn
to adapt. As if to make up for lost time during the
long winter months when cut off from the rest of the
world, the houses up here seem to “talk” to each other.
They will tell you stories about yesteryear and of life
today still influenced by the turn of the seasons: the
pastures, making Beaufort cheese, tourism, mountain
professions. Winding up Chavière Valley, along the
Doron River, the trail will awaken all of your senses to
reveal the secrets of the houses in Prioux.
Two circuits to chose from, two levels of difficulty…

Pastures with the guides
of Pays d’art et d’histoire
Exploring alpine pastures
In partnership with the Pralognan Guide Service and
local farmers with the “Esprit Parc National” label.
Enjoy walks through high alpine pastures to meet with
local farmers and taste their farmhouse products.
Gourmet secrets from an alpine cheese cellar
In the cheese cellar, discover a wide variety of local
cheeses, and then in the village of Prioux, through the
enthusiastic instruction of a local farmer, learn how to
make delicious “alpine chalet” Beaufort cheese. Enjoy
this appetizing stroll!
Morning in the pasture
During the moment of the day when the mountains
awaken, come taste a piece of life in an alpine pasture
and meet with the farmers who work the land in
the Vanoise! Planned for this early morning outing:
observing the local fauna and beautiful landscapes,
ancestral know-how and life in an alpine pasture
today, and a delicious breakfast at a pastoral chalet.
Monsieur Sylvain’s goats
Audrey and Sylvain are anxiously waiting for you
at their alpine pasture in Chapendu, among their
herd of goats, to welcome you at milking time. Near
the recently restored cheese cellar, enjoy a tasting
of “Tomme de Chavière” cheese and other cheeserelated delights!

hydraulica gallery
in Villard du Planay
Espace Glacialis
in Champagny-en-Vanoise
At the base of one of the largest intake pipes to
capture glacier runoff, the Hydraulica Gallery will
allow you to uncover the secrets of hydroelectricity.
Its metallurgical or chemical applications allowed the
valley to develop through industry, as early as the
19th century, long before ski resorts appeared.
15/06 - 04/07 & 29/08 - 20/09: 14.00 to 18.00
06/07 - 28/08: 14.00 to 18.30
Glaciers are ever-present in our local mountains, and
Espace Glacialis reveals their secrets. The interpretive
center is located in Champagny-le-Haut’s beautiful
hanging valley. Learn everything you need to know
about these giant rivers of ice, from the science to
the historical role they have played, through a fun and
interactive exhibit (movies, models, photos, hands-on
displays…).
All summer long: educational workshops for kids,
understanding and creating through nature
Several options:
