ALFONSO HÜPPI
80th Anniversary Exhibition
14th February – 30th April 2015
Alfonso Hüppi was born in Freiburg/Breisgau on 11th February 1935. Our gallery in
Riehen/Basel will be celebrating Hüppi's 80th birthday with an exhibition of his
drawings, graphics and sculptures from the past several decades of his oeuvre.
Hüppi is a master of the line. It curves and bends, writhes and zigzags, surrounds
and encloses, and ends as abruptly as it begins. And it can also shrink to a dash or
even a tiny dot. It is precisely in Hüppi's treatment of the line that we can easily
recognize the former student and subsequent teacher of calligraphy at the
Hamburg University of Fine Arts. The line creates biomorphous, indeed even
anthropomorphous shapes at times, abstracting, simplifying, but hardly ever
divorcing itself completely from surrounding reality. Faces, heads and trees are
among his most favourite themes, insofar as we can discern them from what is
depicted. With features reduced to dots for eyes, nose and mouth, these faces
make their appearance, for example, in Hüppi's works “Euro” (from 2000) and
“Concilium” (from 2001). Gazing at us inquisitively with their innocent eyes, these
moonish faces remind us of caricatures, though they remain strangely serious.
They do not in any way make us laugh, but rather, if anything, solicit a smirk or
smile, and at all events make us think. They remind us vaguely of the widespread
and popular “Smiley”, and while they could indeed be a distant and more serious
relation of this emoticon, they have in fact evolved into Hüppi's own “trade mark”.
Likewise typical of the work of Alfonso Hüppi, who today lives and works in BadenBaden, is the stylized tree, a motif to which he devotes numerous depictions in all
techniques and in all periods of his work. His “Tree” of 1968, for example,
comprises a trunk and top of extremely simplified form, executed in pink, delineated
in silver and merging seamlessly with the border, which is likewise pink. This work
in tempera on Heraklith wood wool board is one of the most stringent renderings of
this motif, as the interior details of the tree have been waived completely for the
sake of the overall impression. The tree in “The 15th Sheet”, of which there were
several variants around the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, is
formed with a continuous line that describes the contours of the undergrowth, the
tree trunk and the tree top, the latter being composed from an undulating sequence
of arched lines with just a hint of interior detail. Pastel colours – mainly pink and
turquoise – fill the gaps and spaces.

The strong reds, blues and greens of the motif chosen for our invitation card are
rather a rare feature of Hüppi's oeuvre. This “Grave Slab for William Tell” (1964) is
likewise dominated by the line. In this case it is a broad, black delineating line
forming concentric curves and parallel chevrons. What is particularly striking here is
the support: untreated crate boards in which knots, gaps and the roughness of
grain are hardly concealed. On the contrary, they are a prevailing element of the
work.
This work also manifests a further characteristic of Hüppi's oeuvre, but by way of
explanation we must go back a hundred years to Marcel Duchamp's “Bicycle
Wheel” (1913), “Bottle Drier” (1914) and “Fountain” (1917), items of everyday use
that Duchamp declared as expressions of a completely new kind of art. They were
the very first “Readymades” and revolutionized the art world, for there was now no
need for the artist's manual dexterity or artistic gesture. With Duchamp's
“Readymades aidés” this new form of artistic expression underwent further
development that ultimately led to the object art we know today, namely the use of
found objects as the raw materials for works of art.
It is in this tradition that the work illustrated in our invitation – and many other works
by Alfonso Hüppi – may likewise be seen. Take, for example, “Pal X” of 1966, a
reversed and painted wooden pallet mounted on the wall, or “Two Wooden Heads”
of 1990, which consist of waste pieces of wood painted and assembled. Such
works fabricated from found pieces of wood may be additionally alienated by
casting, such that the viewer finds himself in front of a bronze that simply looks like
wood, the wood grain still being visible despite the subsequent overpainting.
Examples of these works, too, will be shown in the forthcoming exhibition.
You and your friends are cordially invited to view these works in the exhibition
rooms of our gallery in Riehen/Basel from 14th February onwards (Vernissage 12
noon until 7.00 pm).
We recommend combining your visit to the exhibition with a stroll through the
wonderful exhibition halls of the Fondation Beyeler, which is situated in the centre
of Riehen only a few hundred yards from our gallery.
We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you to our gallery.
