Parks.

The Lodge is the heart of winter activities at Peek’n
Peak. Hang up your skis on the hillside deck and
come in for some homemade soup, tasty burgers,
fries, pizza, desserts and more. Our double-sided
stone fireplace makes the perfect meeting place
for friends and family to warm up with a cup of hot
chocolate.

Set at the top of the mountain, overlooking our
prestigious Upper Golf Course, we invite you to stop
in and enjoy light fare from our pub menu where we
also feature a full service bar. Relax indoors or take

winter warm-up at the top of Chair 6 & 7 or a summer

History

AGAIN. OUR ADVENTURE STORY
BEGINS IN 1963, WHEN SEVERAL
BUSINESSMEN FROM THE CLYMER, NY
AREA DISCUSSED THE CONCEPT OF
INTRODUCING THE SPORT OF SKIING
IN THE SOUTHWESTERN CORNER OF
NEW YORK STATE. THE AREA SEEMED
PERFECT FOR A SKI RESORT SINCE IT
LIES IN THE ‘SNOWBELT’ JUST ABOVE
THE RIDGE OF LAKE ERIE, WHERE
WARM MOIST AIR IS CARRIED FROM
THE LAKE AND MEETS COOLER AIR
INLAND, TRADITIONALLY DEPOSITING
OVER 200” OF SNOW EACH WINTER
SEASON.
In 1963, Phil Gravink, who skied in college at
Cornell, George Boozel, who owned some land
on Pekin Hill, Myrl Babcock, Jim Caflisch, and
Jack Dean pooled their money, secured some
outside financing and formed Western Chautauqua
Recreation, Inc. Approximately 400 acres of
property was acquired in 1964 and 1965. Now a
suitable name had to be chosen. Since the ski slopes
were located on what was known as Pekin Hill - the
homestead of the Pekin Family - a derivation of that
name was chosen, Peek’n Peak, because they knew
that a 400’ vertical drop would provide enjoyment
for many future generations. Otto Schneibs came
down from Lake Placid to design the trail layout.
An Old English theme was adopted - thus, Robin
Hood’s Retreat, Long Bow, Will Scarlet’s Secret,
Friar Tuck’s Trek, and Little John’s Jaunt were
the first slopes and trails. Olde Road was moved to
accommodate the ski areas. The offices and ticket
sales were housed in an old school bus. With hopes
of attracting not only locals, but skiers from Ohio
and Pennsylvania as well, Peek’n Peak opened in
the winter of 1964-65. The ski resort featured two
ski lifts (a J-Bar and a T-Bar), 6 slopes and trails,
and a lift ticket price of $4.50 on weekends, $3.00 for
the beginner area, and a $.50 discount for weekday
tickets! The lifts operated only during the day, since
there were no lights on the slopes. The main ski
lodge was build soon after, and was less than half of
the size of today’s Main Lodge.
Since that time, the resort has grown to include
an expansion of ski slopes and night skiing, state
of the art snow making and groomers, conference
facilities, condominiums, 2 championship golf
courses, and a luxury day spa.
In 2011, Peek’n Peak was purchased by Scott
Enterprises, an Erie Pennsylvania based family
company. Scott Enterprises is a hospitality
enterprise that owns and operates locations
throughout the region including restaurants and
hotels, as well as the Ambassador Banquet and
Conference Center and Splash Lagoon Indoor
Waterpark. Since acquiring Peek’n Peak, The Scotts
have renovated all 108 hotel rooms, introduced
Segways, added a snow sports BagJump, expanded
the Terrain Park, and have made improvements
to the Spa. In the years ahead, the Scott Family
looks forward to continuing to expand and make
additional improvements to the resort while
maintaining the integrity of the Peak’s history and
olde world charm.
