A modern city, a state capital with groundbreaking architecture and a
model infrastructure, surrounded by idyllic little towns and villages –
this is Hannover with all its exciting and alluring contrasts. Some 40 different
theatres, numerous museums and a world-famous State Opera hold
out the promise of some thrilling moments at performances on the highest

level. Equally attractive are the Herrenhausen Gardens, the great diversity
of sporting events and open-air concerts, and the large number of
fairs and popular festivals. Shopping addicts will find that the city has one
of Germany’s longest pedestrian zones, while in many of the Region’s
smaller towns the historic half-timbered buildings provide charmingly
atmospheric backdrops for shopping expeditions. All around there are a
wealth of recreational areas such as Lake Steinhude or the Deister Hills,
offering a wide diversity of leisure activities.

Auf rund 4,2 Kilometern Länge liegen 36 Highlights an dieser unübersehbar aufs Pflaster gemalten Linie. Starten Sie zum Beispiel in der
Altstadt, wo Fachwerkhäuser aus dem 16. Jahrhundert zu entdecken
sind. Inmitten der City ist dieses Viertel wie ein Kleinod der Stille abseits
betriebsamer Hauptstraßen. Nur Sonnabends schieben sich Menschenmengen am Leineufer entlang – dann ist Flohmarkt.
highlights. A good starting point for your tour is the charming Old Town
(Altstadt) with its half-timbered houses dating back to the 16th century,
whose quaint streets and alleys seem so far removed from the bustling
modern city surrounding it. Only on Saturdays do people flock to the banks
of the River Leine to visit the traditional flea market.

Thread”. This red line, conspicuously painted on Hannover's pavements

Architecture from every era
In the List area you will find entire streets in the style of the first years of
the German Empire, stately villas from the Wilhelminian period in the
Zoo Quarter, the austere functionality of the Weimar Republic in the buildings
of the Südstadt district and half-timbered medieval buildings in the area
between the Marktkirche (Market Church) and the banks of the River Leine.
In between, modernity prevails: the plate glass high-rise of the NORD/LB
bank, the twisting Gehry tower of gleaming stainless steel and the new
Torhaus are all prime examples of futuristic architecture. In the towns and
villages surrounding the city, the many historic half-timbered buildings
provide their own distinctive character. New housing has been integrated
into traditional rural areas with an eye for harmony.

Zahlreiche Volksfeste und Musikevents werden in Hannover alljährlich zu
Publikumsmagneten. Idyllisch und traditionell geht es in den grünen Weiten
der Region zu, wenn alljährlich in vielen Städten und Gemeinden die
Schützen-, Stadt- und Erntefeste gefeiert werden.
Große Open-Air-Konzerte in der AWD-Arena oder auf der Gilde Parkbühne
locken Rock- und Popfans in Scharen nach Hannover. An Himmelfahrt
wird die Stadt zur Jazzmetropole, wenn beim „enercity Swinging Hannover“
vor dem Neuen Rathaus gefeiert wird.
Beim Frühlingsfest, Oktoberfest und natürlich beim größten Schützenfest
der Welt amüsieren sich Hunderttausende in Karussells und Partyzelten.
Berühmt ist der kilometerlange Schützenausmarsch durch die Innenstadt.
Und auch das Maschseefest zählt zu den erfolgreichsten Volksfesten
in Norddeutschland.
Wenn das Meer leuchtet
„Festliches Wochenende Steinhude“ heißt das sommerliche Highlight auf
und um den größten See Niedersachsens mit einer traumhaften Kulisse
aus illuminierten Booten, einem Höhenfeuerwerk und zahlreichen Attraktionen
am Ufer. Überall in der Region gibt es reizvolle Flecken, wo landwirtschaftliche
Traditionen gepflegt werden.
Festivals and festivities
Hannover's countless popular festivities and music festivals prove to be
enormous draws year after year.
In the green expanses of the Region, cherished traditions come alive at
the many idyllic local Marksmen’s Fairs, Harvest Festivals and town festivities
that are celebrated every year.
Rock and pop fans flock to Hannover for the big open-air concerts in the
AWD Arena or on the Gilde Park Stage. On Ascension Day, the city becomes
a metropolis of jazz when the fans celebrate “enercity Swinging Hannover”
outside the New Town Hall. At the Spring Festival, the Oktoberfest and
of course the biggest Markmen’s Fair in the world, hundreds of thousands
have a wonderful time on the rides and in the marquees. The famous
Parade of the Marksmen through the city centre is more than a kilometre
long. And the Maschsee Lake Festival is another of northern Germany’s
most successful popular festivities.

When the lake is lit up
The summer highlight on and by Lower Saxony’s largest lake is “Steinhude
Festive Weekend”, with a dreamlike backcloth of illuminated boats, an
aerial firework display and numerous attractions onshore. Everywhere in
the Region there are delightful spots where agricultural traditions are still
maintained.

In business matters, Hannover is an all-rounder; the capital of Lower
Saxony is an industrial location, a services centre and a market-place,
and it also hosts the biggest trade fairs in the world. Traders, craft

The people of Hannover are well known to be warm-hearted hosts.
The city welcomed its first trade fair visitors as long ago as 1947. Since
then, the Hannover Fair has developed into the biggest exhibition of capital
goods in the world. Five of the ten biggest exhibitions in the world take
place at the Hannover venue. The flagship is CeBIT, the world’s biggest fair
in the fields of communication, information and telecommunications. Over
a period of more than 50 years, Hannover has developed a high degree
of expertise in staging fairs and conventions efficiently.

Hannover Congress Centrum (HCC) has been modernised to ensure that
when it hosts international conventions it also provides international
standards. The listed building now appears in a progressive new garb,
flooded with daylight and boasting a high level of functionality.

in the Region. The hotel trade has long been accustomed to responding

Überraschende Einkaufserlebnisse bietet die Region auch außerhalb der
Großstadt. Entdecken Sie die liebliche Wedemark im Norden mit ihren
historischen Stadtkernen oder schlendern Sie durch Burgdorfs (Foto 4)
Fußgängerzone östlich von Hannover. In den Süden lockt Springe am
Rande des Deister-Höhenzuges, während im Westen die Stadt Wunstorf
– auch durch ihre Nähe zum Steinhuder Meer – einen Ausflug lohnt.

Hannover's pedestrian zone is one of the longest in Germany, and according
to a nationwide survey is also one of the most popular for retail therapy.
Indeed, few cities offer such a wide variety of shops in such close proximity:
every kind of store you can think of is to be found in the central area.
Around Kröpcke you will find a winning combination of exclusive independent
retailers and big, colourful department stores. The shopping arcades

Luise boast a wide variety of stores that offer something for everybody.
Haute couture and exclusive jewellery vie for your attention in Georgstrasse
(Photo 2) by the Opera House. Shopping around the Marktkirche (Market
Church) in the Altstadt (Old Town) is a particular pleasure, with the picturesque
timber-framed buildings giving it that extra-special atmosphere (Photo 3).
Even outside the city boundaries the region has plenty of shopping treats
in every direction. Discover lovely Wedemark to the north with the historic
centres of the former small communities it was formed from, or wander
through the pedestrian precinct of Burgdorf (Photo 4) to the east of Hannover.
To the south is Springe on the edge of the Deister Hills, while to the west
Wunstorf is well worth a visit, not least due to its close proximity to Lake
Steinhude.

Golfen, Polo und natürlich Fußball
Bei den „German Classics“ treffen sich alljährlich die Stars der Springund Dressurreiter auf dem Messegelände. Zudem sind in der gesamten
Region das ganze Jahr über ungezählte Reitturniere zu besuchen, denn
der Pferdesport genießt in und um die Landeshauptstadt eine lange
Tradition. Im April beginnt die Saison auf der Pferderennbahn Neue Bult
in Langenhagen, wo bis November edle Vollblüter durch das Oval galoppieren.
Aktiv oder als Zuschauer, im Team oder als Einzelkämpfer, in der Natur
oder im Stadion – Hannover ist eine Sportstadt. Wer sich nicht selbst die
Skater schnürt oder aufs Fahrrad schwingt, kann die Fußball-Bundesligisten
von Hannover 96 in der AWD-Arena oder die Eishockey-Stars der „Scorpions“
in der TUI Arena anfeuern. Und im Rugby ist Hannover seit Jahrzehnten
eine Hochburg. Eine Radsportveranstaltung mit Volksfestcharakter ist
die „Nacht von Hannover“ rund um die Markthalle, bei der die Rennfahrer
hautnah zu erleben sind.

zum Putten und Pitchen ein. Ob in idyllischer Heidelandschaft oder in

Every year the stars of show-jumping and dressage meet on the Hannover
Fair Exhibition Grounds for the “German Classics”. But there are also
countless other riding tournaments to visit throughout the Region all the

Whether you are an active participant or a spectator, an individual competitor
or a member of a team, and whether you play in the stadium or on
some playing field on the edge of town: Hannover is a city of sport. Those
who prefer not to don skates or swing up onto a bicycle themselves
can cheer on the first division football club Hannover 96 in the AWD Arena
or the stars of the “Scorpions” ice hockey team in the TUI Arena.
Hannover has been a stronghold of rugby for decades. The “Night of
Hannover” is a cycle racing event with the character of a popular festival,
as the riders encircle the Market Hall practically at arm's length from
the spectators.
All around Hannover there are 15 golf courses, whose affordable green
fees invite visiting golfers to come and practise their putting and pitching.
Whether located in idyllic heathland surroundings or in spacious parkland,
each of these courses has its own atmosphere of exclusiveness.

Tierwelten und Funsport
Exotische Landschaften, über 2.600 Tiere und tolle Shows im ErlebnisZoo Hannover: Gehen Sie auf Safari durch Afrikas Flusslandschaft Sambesi,
zum imposanten Gorillaberg und in den prächtigen Dschungelpalast.
Abgerundet wird das Abenteuer auf urig niedersächsische Art in Meyers
Hof, wo rustikale Genüsse serviert werden.
Im Wisentgehege Springe südlich von Hannover haben 100 Wildarten ihr
Zuhause. Wölfe, Fischotter, Wisente und Braunbären zählen zur faszinierenden Vielfalt im 90 Hektar großen Tierpark. Der Tiergarten Hannover
im Stadtteil Kirchrode war ursprünglich ein privates Jagdrevier von
Herzog Johann Friedrich. Jetzt ist es ein beliebtes, grünes Ausflugsziel mit
uralten Eichen, Kastanien und Hainbuchen. Eine 200-köpfige Dammwildherde trabt hier frei umher, Wildschweine und Wildpferde können in
Gehegen besichtigt werden.
In Hannover-Herrenhausen erleben Besucher auf 3.500 Quadratmetern
Lebensräume von der Leine über die Karibik bis zum Amazonas: Ob
Muschel, Süßwasserstechrochen oder Piranha – das erste tropische Sea
Life in Deutschland beherbergt über 5.000 Unterwasserlebewesen.
„Action zum Mitmachen“ lautet die Devise in der Campo Aktiv-Arena.

of Hannover was originally Duke John Frederick’s private hunting ground;
now, as a green oasis full of ancient oaks, chestnuts and hornbeams,
it is a popular destination for excursions. A herd of some 200 fallow deer
run around freely, and wild boar and wild horses can be observed in
their paddocks.

accommodates more than 5,000 aquatic creatures.
In the Campo Aktiv Arena the motto is “Get in on the action”: climbing,
inline skating, sliding, hopping and paddling and much more besides
on 365 days of the year – every age group can get in on the action, from

In Herrenhausen findet sich der letzte Liebesbeweis der weltberühmten
Künstlerin Niki de Saint Phalle an die Hannoveraner: LA GROTTE. Mosaike
aus Spiegeln, buntem Glas und Kieselsteinen fügen sich zu einem faszinierenden Sinneserlebnis. Sich ständig verändernde Lichtverhältnisse

Herrenhausen is my life
The world-famous baroque gardens of Herrenhausen were created by
Sophia, Princess Palatine of the Rhine, who was Electress of Hannover
from 1692 to 1714. The baroque Great Garden and the adjacent
George Garden, a landscape garden in the English style, together form
a grand display of the art of European horticulture over a period of three
centuries. Opposite them is the Hill Garden, which has developed into
a botanical display garden of international standing; between 500 and 800
orchids in resplendent bloom can be admired there at any time of the year.
Just as the ladies and gentlemen of the court once used to do, today’s
visitors too stroll pleasurably between the richly ornamented beds, which
on summer evenings are festively illuminated. Springing water babbles
in hidden corners, while the Great Fountain rises to an impressive height
of 70 metres. In summer the gardens become a dream backcloth for
the concerts and performances of musicals and drama that make up the
Herrenhausen Festival Weeks; at the annual International Firework Competition
the pyrotechnists paint fantastic pictures in the air.

Auf Entdeckertour
Zum Segeln ans Steinhuder Meer, per Mountainbike durch den Deister,
zur Erforschung der Welfen auf die Marienburg: Hannovers Umland bietet
eine Fülle an Ausflugszielen. Im Nordwesten der Region Hannover liegt
das Steinhuder Meer. Vom Familienausflug bis zur Segelregatta ist auf
diesem 32 Quadratkilometer großen Gewässer alles möglich. Auf eine
Kreuzfahrt anderer Art geht das Fahrgastschiff „Wappen von Hannover“.
Quer durch die gesamte Region sind auf der Leine, der Ihme und dem
Mittellandkanal neue Perspektiven zu erleben.
Wie ein fernes Märchenschloss sitzt die Marienburg auf einer Bergkuppe
bei Pattensen. Das Schloss im neugotischen Stil wurde Mitte des 19.
Jahrhunderts von König Georg V. als Geschenk für seine Frau Marie

Spezialitäten aus der Region
Die traditionelle Niedersächsische Küche ist von überwiegend deftiger
Natur. Eine Spezialität ist der Aal aus den Räuchereien am Steinhuder
Meer. Grünkohl mit Bregenwurst gilt als herbstlicher Klassiker. Zu den
regionalen Gerichten zählt auch die Schlachteplatte, am liebsten mit der
Hochzeitssuppe vorweg. Als Dessert hat die Welfenspeise Tradition. Das
Burgdorfer Land nordöstlich von Hannover ist berühmt für seinen Spargel.
Die Hannoveraner wissen heimische Produkte zu schätzen, die in reicher
Auswahl auch in der Hannover Markthalle, im landwirtschaftlichen
Direktvertrieb sowie auf den 60 Wochen- und Bauernmärkten der Region
erworben werden können.
Nachtschwärmer sind willkommen
Wenn der Tag ausklingt in Hannover, dann erwacht die Partyszene. Rock,
House oder Hip Hop bestimmen die musikalische Vielfalt in Diskotheken
und Clubs, in Kneipen, Cocktailbars und Nachtcafés. Am Abend geht’s zum
Beispiel Richtung Raschplatz – „MEC“ oder „Palo Palo“ geben hier den
Takt an. Das Nachtleben beschränkt sich aber nicht nur auf die Großstadt.
Auch in den Städten und Gemeinden der Region wird bis in die Morgenstunden gefeiert.
Regional specialities
The traditional cuisine of Lower Saxony tends to be of a hearty and wellnourishing nature. One speciality is eel from the smoke-houses at
Lake Steinhude. The classic autumn dish is grünkohl mit bregenwurst (kale
with spicy sausages). Another regional favourite is schlachteplatte (a mixture
of pressed meats and various sausages), preferably with hochzeitssuppe (“wedding soup”) as a starter. Welfenspeise (Guelph pudding) is a
traditional dessert. The Burgdorfer Land to the north-east of Hannover
is famous for its asparagus, a plentiful selection of which can be bought
directly from the producers, or else in the Market Hall in Hannover or at
one of the 60 weekly town and farmers’ markets held throughout the region.
