The event, called Ellie and Jack’s Charity Match, will be a veterans football match to raise funds for four worthwhile causes, the Teenage Cancer Trust, the Sick Childrens Trust, the Jenny Lind Department at Norwich Hospital and the Brain Tumour Charity. These four charities have been chosen by Ellie Shaul and Jack Long, two local teenagers, who, over the past couple of years, have been helped by these charities after being diagnosed with serious illnesses. Ellie’s Story In November 2014 when I was 15, I was diagnosed with a craniopharyngioma (brain tumour). I was admitted into Addenbrookes Hospital where I had an operation, which thankfully removed the whole tumour. However, I have been left with a few complications because of the position of where the tumour was situated. I have diabetes insipidus, adrenal insufficiency, an underactive thyroid, Type 2 diabetes and I am also registered as partially sighted. I would like to raise funds for the Sick Childrens Trust because they provided the place my parents stayed, free of charge, whilst I was in hospital. I have also chosen to support the Brain Tumour charity, as I would like to help others, who have been or are going through a similar situation as me. Jack’s Story In December last year, following a blood test, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and was taken straight into Addenbrookes. The reason I chose the Teenage Cancer Trust is because when I was in Addenbrookes, I stayed on the teenage cancer ward and they did everything they could to make it as easy as possible for my family and me. I have also chosen the Jenny Lind at Norwich, because I’m currently having lots of my treatment undertaken there and they try to make things as fun as possible. Ellie & Jack’s Charity Match is from 3.00pm onwards at Holt Playing Fields on Sunday 21st August. Kick off for the veterans football match is at 4.00pm and there will be a BBQ and raffle with super prizes. Everyone is welcome! The photograph above shows Ellie (centre) with some of the veterans who took part in her fundraising match held last year in January at Briston Recreation Ground between a Briston team and a Holt United team, with Briston coming out on top as 6-3 winners. It is the twelfth year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council, has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed. Becky Palmer, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “This is an incredible result. For Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods to keep winning is testament to the hard work of our countryside rangers and the wealth of beautiful places that surround us in North Norfolk. Our award-winning green spaces are a wonderful place for adults and children to experience the natural world. There are also events at all our Green Flag sites, so do take the opportunity to visit and take in these beautiful places.” In 2005, Holt Country Park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained. Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in 2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods the following year. Pretty Corner was awarded a Green Flag on its very first application, which is very rare and a clear acknowledgement of the excellent work that is being carried out by NNDC staff and dedicated local volunteers. The three sites are among a record-breaking 1686 parks and green spaces that have been awarded with a prestigious Green Flag Award for 2016/2017. The award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. JOIN OUR AMAZING DAY OF FUN AT PRETTY CORNER WOODS, SHERINGHAM Now in its fourth year North Norfolk District Council’s Fun Day Out is gearing up to be an unmissable event. AID AFRICA CONTINUES TO CHANGE LIVES IN RURAL MALAWI! from Lynda Mills A nursery school in the remote areas needed a room to work from. Elders and officials approached Aid Africa in the hope we may be able to help.... Msikita is a large, remote, vulnerable village of 1850 households, about 7000 people, inaccessible by vehicle during the rainy season, so could only be reached by bike or foot. Back in 2009, a Nursery School, Zayambika (‘it has started’) was founded with no resources but 6 voluntary teachers. Eager for educational opportunities for their young ones, the school started under a tree and later, the villagers came together and built a simple school room. Sadly, poor materials and lack of foundation, caused the building to collapse and there were no resources to maintain or rebuild it. 83 children are currently registered, 51 boys and 32 girls, and they needed a building. On assessment, we developed the concept from a simple room to a Community Centre, which would incorporate the Zayambika Nursery School, and so much more besides. From the beginning this project was challenging, mostly because of the remote location of the village. Following the rains, we couldn’t get there but the villagers worked hard building a ‘road’, a dirt track filled with stones, clods of earth and branches, which would allow our 4x4 to get most of the way. So in April we visited for the first time and were overwhelmed by the warm welcome received from the whole village. Their eagerness to facilitate their children’s education, backed by years of voluntary teaching by dedicated villagers, really impressed us. The children sang, the women danced, the men shared their conviction that education was the route out of poverty for their little ones. We decided to go ahead with the build despite the difficulties. A hint about the amazing novelty and importance of this development came as we left the village, most of the children ran ahead of us excitedly shouting ‘galimoto!’ to each other. Galimoto is ‘car’ in Chichewa, some had never seen one! The foundations were dug as the ruins of the old building were torn down. We’d located and bought bricks locally and the villagers carried each of the 30,000 by foot, wheelbarrow or pushbike. They also brought river sand to site in the same way. Our part was to provide everything else, cement, iron roofing sheets and timbers, doors, windows and a building team. We could only transport materials to site by our motortrike, as no commercial trucks would venture out so far on such poor roads. The building took shape and by the end of June, it was finished, plastered, painted, windows glazed and ready for the opening celebrations. On Friday, 8th July, hundreds gathered to witness the official opening of Msikita Community Centre and its handing over to the local community. There were solemn, appreciative speeches, then the time came for the cutting of the ribbon by the guest of honour, Chiringa’s Police Chief and the opening of the door to welcome the community. People poured in, thrilled at this wonderful asset that has been built in their community. They see it as empowerment to improve education, and encouragement to continue development of their area. They anticipate, in future, not only will the Nursery School meet there but much-needed adult literacy classes, civic meetings and health support will be established in the Centre. Alongside, trees will also be grown to help battle the deforestation so apparent in the area, and we’re providing seeds and urging the growth of moringa to improve nutrition and general health for all. Many thanks for all your help and support and an especially huge ‘thank you’ to all who have donated new and nearly-new items for our ‘underwear appeal’ for women and girls, these will change lives in rural Malawi. The project was established following a series of visits made by mission teams from Lighthouse to the primary school in Lumperie. During these visits, the team built guttering, a rainwater storage tank, a water filtration system, re-wired the electrical system and completed and decorated classrooms. They also provided bunk beds, book shelves, books, teacher training, a school office, computer, 180 Food parcels, shoes and clothing as well as running a holiday club, sports day, feeding programme and health checks. Following the last mission visit in November 2015, two members of the team, Ian Mutton and Derek Baldry, felt that they should make a greater commitment to the work in Lumperie, and this was confirmed when they shared their thoughts with Pastor Stephen Musisi the Director of African Child Development Trust, who had a similar vision. Ian and Derek met with Lighthouse Senior Pastor Ian Savory and shared their vision for the work in Lumperie, and Lighthouse leadership confirmed that this project should become a significant part of the Lighthouse missions programme. Ian and Derek have been set apart to lead the Project, which has been called ‘Reed People’. The name comes from Isaiah 42 v 3 : A bruised reed he will not break, and smouldering flax He will not quench. The pair returned to Lumperie in May 2016 to gather information and survey the site in order to produce a comprehensive plan to complete the development of the Primary School, and plan for a Secondary School and potentially a Vocational Training College. Alongside these projects it is hoped to develop an agricultural training centre to teach better land management, arable farming methods and animal husbandry in order to increase crop yield and high animal welfare. Derek says, “We are simply working with Lighthouse Charity Trust and with Pastor Steve Musisi in Uganda to help develop the school to fulfil the vision from God.” Ian and Derek have further trips planned, but in the meantime they would welcome invitations to share their vision with Community, Praise the young and they will blossom. Norfolk Lime Bosch summer savings won’t last forever. We’re committed to the highest quality workmanship, using traditional methods with the best materials available. We solve building issues that are a result of a lack of knowledge of how to care for old properties. We work closely with our clients, encouraging them to understand their property and the traditional Lime-based products that we use. Lime is 100% natural, with many benefits and is the only material that should ever be considered as a mortar or plaster during the renovation of buildings with a solid wall construction. It’s also a good choice for modern buildings too. It’s a breathable medium that flexes with the natural movement of a building, making it far less prone to cracking than modern cement mixes (which also have a habit of trapping moisture in a wall, causing endless damp problems). Buildings constructed with Lime internally and externally work as one breathable mass, they take moisture in and allow it to breath the moisture out again through the Lime masonry joints and Lime render. Lime has many benefical antibacterial properties too, and produces clean, healthier air within a building Do you have a period property with damp or related problems? Initiated by Helen Stoker, who owns The Barn Café-Bistro and is also married to the local vicar, this large bold steel sculpture by Henry J Stephen is already creating much interest among local residents and visitors alike. Weighing in at just under a tonne and over 12 feet in length Horatio certainly makes his amenable presence felt. Henry, an exciting emerging local artist who up to this point had only made small animal heads said, “Horatio is a sculptural representation of a Percheron war horse. They are huge muscular working horses. I feel as though these beasts have a humble majesty that speaks to the rural language of Norfolk. There is something stirring about steel, its processes and its versatility that translates so well to this breed of horse. I’ve spent 6 months working on Horatio. The build was done largely on my own in my workshop just outside Holt. It’s funny to see my workshop without him now he is in Appleyard.” Helen said, “I am so excited about having this sculpture outside the café and standing underneath the ancient apple tree seems to be just the right place for him. You can see the love and dedication that Henry has put into him.” Buy with confidence from a local company with a wealth of experience Established in 1991, Sheringham Windows boasts thousands of satisfied customers throughout the region. HOLT POST OFFICE Dear Caroline, I am deeply concerned at the recent news item in the Chronicle that the Post Office in Holt may cease to operate. Post Office Counters Ltd have been seeking a new site and further to a six week consultation period (when will this start?) with interested parties, Budgens has been selected as a possible site for relocation. I have to say that it is a totally unsuitable site for the following reasons. It will be necessary for Holt residents to pay a parking charge in order to visit the Post Office and I doubt if the said parking charge will be refunded. Parking for the current location is not always easy but rarely impossible, whereas the walk from the High Street is longer unless one parks at Budgens. By locating the Post Office in Budgens it is an underhand way to tempt possible supermarket customers into the existing store, so as to compete with the imminent arrival of Aldi in Holt. It is far from being an exciting opportunity for the town in offering a seven day a week Post Office service when we all know that the Post Office does not offer a seven day service. Finally, there is a conflict of interest since Budgens already offer a parcel sending service through another operator, whom will they favour, the third party or Royal Mail? Yours sincerely, Tom Dick OH GOOD! Dear Caroline, How good for Holt. How good for Michael Baker, a pound to him every time for parking when I want a stamp. How good the Post Office will be in Budgens. I’m fed up paying him £1 every time I pick up, or take my partner’s grandchildren to school for all of 10 minutes, twice a day. Yellow lines everywhere, no parking anywhere. And Baker’s on the council! Yours sincerely, M Sims ALDI UPDATE Dear Caroline, I thought that your readers might like to see the reply that I received from Aldi regarding their new store in Holt. Thank you for your letter dated 4th July 2016. I am pleased to inform you that ALDI are interested in opening a new store in Holt and we are in negotiations with a developer on a particular site. We are currently waiting for the developer to start building the ALDI store so unfortunately I am unable to commit to an opening date at this time, however I hope it won’t be too long before you will see an ALDI store in Holt. I would like to thank you for taking the time to write to us and for your kind comments about ALDI, it is always good to receive positive feedback from our customers. Yours sincerely, Lisa Poyser Property Director Yours sincerely, Simon Vaughan-Birch BREXIT Dear Caroline, I do not begrudge Chris Marsh his triumphant Brexit moment and look forward to the disbandment of UKIP now their objective has been achieved. However, I think that he might do well to consider the victory was by a narrow margin and a substantial minority of the population did not share his enthusiasm, nor did they view the EU as a Franco-German conspiracy against the UK (the thrust of the book Chris recommends, I hope this saves somebody a long boring read when there are much more interesting works on UFOs, aliens etc). As to the future of a united UK and the economic wonderland he predicts, time will tell but I can only hope for the best for my country. Meanwhile, his conclusions seem a little premature and speculative, rather like the ‘£350m a week for the NHS’ which disappeared the morning after the vote. I have yet to see any plan for the way ahead because clearly there wasn’t one. The nation needs to be united and to dismiss almost half the population as ‘smug’ , ‘self righteous’ and ‘childish’ does little to bring us together. It is a British tradition to be modest in victory. Starting with an apology to the European Parliament from Nigel Farage for his rude and arrogant behaviour, less crowing from Brexiteers might help to bridge the deep divisions that Brexit has created both within the UK and abroad. Yours sincerely, Peter North HAPPY READER Dear Caroline, In reply to the letter from Chris March in Issue 356, I agree entirely. I have never known politics like this, it’s nearer to anarchism, it’s a shame what this Britain has become. I too am delighted to be out, out of the EU..... but will I be out? Yours sincerely, Mick Sims email: [email protected] 10 ENERGY DRINKS Dear Caroline, The ‘Energy’ drink does not seem to provide enough, in many cases, for the consumer to put the empty can in a litter bin! Yours sincerely, T Cooke A NEW RELIGION Dear Caroline, Having read David Ashton’s letter on this in Issue 356, it occurs to me that his doctrinal differences with the church might more effectively be addressed by a meeting with the vicar (over a cup of coffee and a scone, perhaps?) than through your columns. Yours sincerely, Michael Olin CAN YOU HELP THE HOLT FRIDAY CLUB? Dear Caroline, After thirty years volunteering, our wonderful cooks are retiring in December and we are desparately seeking volunteer cooks to carry on their excellent service. We supply a two course cooked lunch every Friday at the Holt Community Centre for approximately thirty elderly Holt residents and need help from 8.30am to approximately 1.30pm. If you feel you could possibly help please be kind enough to telephone Jill on 01263 711149 or Glenys on 01263 710197 for more details. Yours sincerely, The Friday Club HOLT IN BLOOM Dear Caroline, I would like to send thanks to all those who took part in the trial run of Holt in Bloom. Mrs Elaine Oliver, Town Council Officer, had expressed enthusiasm for entering Holt into Anglia in Bloom many months beforehand and extended an invitation to any Councillor who wished to work on the project. I was very happy to do this and so we started gathering information from Bressingham, and as time went on from many of our traders and members of the community. Our intention was to plan a full ‘show’ for 2017. However, the advisers from Anglia suggested that we have a trial this year. The shopkeepers we spoke to were wonderfully supportive and so we decided to do the best we could with the time we had and the volunteers already on board. Considering these factors, it was brilliant to see the results. I can’t possibly list everyone here, but new The Holt Chronicle Issue 357 12th August 2016 planters and baskets replaced the old and tatty; good ones were refilled and two threetier towers were strategically placed for splashes of summer colour. Holt Primary pupils took great pride in showing the judges around their garden, and their fantastic pots of runner beans, and were well able to answer questions about their produce and the jobs involved. Franklin and Apple Yards illustrated two very different styles. The War Memorial was lifted by the red and blue base surround. The Memorial Garden was tidied and bird feeders were installed. The frontage to Holt Library was beautifully enhanced by three bespoke wooden planters, donated by Thaxters. Photographs of our spectacular spring scenes at St Andrews were viewed by the judges. Finally, special thanks must go to Edgefield Nurseries. Gary is an absolute stalwart where supporting Holt is concerned and did everything possible to help us from planning to delivery. Yours sincerely, Maggie Prior District Cllr Holt Ward FRONT COVER Dear Caroline, We are writing to say how thrilled we were to see our garden in Lees Yard on the front page of the last edition of the The Chronicle (issue 356), it was a lovely surprise. We are happy to join in with everyone in Lees Yard, who has a role in making this part of Holt an attractive place for residents and visitors alike. It is wonderful to see just how many people stop to take photographs and appreciate the garden. We have received some really lovely comments. This year the Yard is looking especially colourful with the additional planting of new containers and hanging baskets. It is wonderful to belong to a community where residents and traders support each other, making Holt especially pretty in bloom at this time of year. Inside, a screen erected in Victorian times, separates the Choir and Altar from the congregation. All is vanity!” Ecclesiates Ch 1 V 2 These are familiar words which were heard read again in church recently. The writer of the book of Ecclesiasties from which they come clearly questions what life is for. He questions the usefulness of striving after wisdom and knowledge and of working hard for something that one only leaves to those who will come after you, those who have not worked for it. To him all of life is full of pain, all is vanity and a striving after wind, useless and empty. Yet in questioning the priorities of life the book in many ways speaks to us today and questions the priorities of our own lives and the priorities of the world in which we live. The world appears to be at a crossroads, a turning point, and there could well be a siesmic political shift across both sides of the Atlantic and around the world. You only have to imagine a world with Trump as the US President a move to the extreme right across Europe, and further instability in Turkey and the middle East to realise the world will look and feel very different and could become even more dangerous. Without wanting to sound as disilluioned as the preacher in the book of Ecclesiastes I would suggest that our leaders and indeed ourselves must have the courage to question the priorities in our own lives. In an unjust world in which violence and bloodshed, greed and power threaten our very existence what is life really about? What are our lives for? Wherein lies our happiness, our meaning, purpose and fulfilment? What is it that defines us as human beings? Where do we find our true worth? Is it in things of this world, in what we do, in the things we possess, the status we have achieved in life? Is it in the idelogoies that some people are prepared to fight for? Or is it ultimately in who we are, made in the image of God, created in the image of love, to be loved and to love? In reality and from experience we know that the things of this world are fleeting, temporary, short lived and as the preacher in Ecclesiaties has identified can often result in disappointment, leaving us feeling disillusioned and empty. Christ Jesus came into the world to answer to the bleak emptiness represented in the reflections of Ecclesiastes and in the New Testament St Paul teaches us to have faith enough to believe that in baptism our lives are hidden in Christ and that in him alone lies the meaning of our lives. It is in the love of God revealed in Christ Jesus that we live and move and have our being, in him we find our ultimate identity and not in things of the world. Surely. there is an increasing need for all humanity to rediscover what it means to be human, what it means to be created in the image of God and to show compassion and love. Anything less is vanity and a striving after wind. Every blessing, Fr. Evidently, this perceived unreliability and dishonesty is preventing individuals from making donations to certain charities. In the light of this report, permit me a few words to reflect on our own situation. The Centre has been blessed with amazingly generous donations in the past. These have been an irreplaceable resource for development and improvement here. As can be seen in our accounts, which are submitted annually to the Charities Commission and revealed locally at our AGM, donations are not used for daily upkeep, maintenance or, of course, for personal gain. Your committee is honour-bound to ensure that donations of any kind are respected , treasured and finally applied to specific projects, to enhance the facility that is here for all to enjoy. Recent examples have been: the new chairs, the new heating system and the satellite equipment that brings top shows from London and elsewhere to Holt for a fraction of what it would cost you to go there. Whilst this is not specifically an appeal for donations, we are always very appreciative when they are received. 100% of all donations goes towards the projects that are made known! The idea is to let people hear intellectually challenging speakers of national repute entirely for free: one talking on a religious topic and one on a more secular one. These are deliberately not fundraising events so there’s no entry charge and no ticket is needed - just turn up on the evening. On Friday 2nd September at 7.00pm the Right Reverend Victor Stock, lately Dean of Guildford Cathedral, will give a talk entitled ‘Force Feeding - Is Religion Bad for You?’. Expanding on this theme, Dean Stock writes: “From ISIS to Christian fundamentalism millions of people are fed on certainty and fear of difference. Is reasonable religion doomed to be dismissed by the thoughtful and the inquiring or can classical Anglicanism make its voice heard?” Then on Friday 7th October at 7.00pm Charles Saumarez Smith, Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts will speak on the subject of ‘The Sacred and Secular in Contemporary Art’. This will be an exploration of some of the relationships between the practice of contemporary art and religion: the search for transcendence; the idea of the sacred; and the use of symbolic meaning. He then held up the paper and asked them what they saw. One person replied, “I see a black mark.” “Right”, the preacher said. “What else?” Silence prevailed. “I am really surprised,” he said. “You have completely overlooked the most important thing of all - the piece of paper.” How often we are distracted by small, dot-like disappointments and forget the innumerable blessings and good things that happen in our lives. How often the ‘black dot’ problems monopolise our time, thoughts and lives when actually they are tiny specks in a bigger spectrum called life. ‘Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.’ Psalm 103.2. Stuart’s TAXI & TRAVEL Just Peachy! Some puddings are just great classics and deserve to be revisited; Peach Melba definitely falls into this category. The brilliant blending of warm peaches, ice cream and decadent raspberry coulis is a beautiful way to finish off a meal and perfect for the summer. In the interests of frugality, I have used tinned peaches for this version but by all means at this time of year, if you can get your hands on a fresh punnet, go ahead; just maybe use a touch more sugar if they’re firm. To freshen up the recipe, I have replaced the raspberries with strawberries, and added Pimm’s, as they go so well together. Incidentally, I buy a version of this drink called Jeeves, from Lidl, for a fraction of the price .... I believe Aldi do one as well. Use up any over ripe strawberries for this recipe rather than wasting them ... as you’re only going to stew them anyway. Dollop on some double cream, sprigs of mint and a crunchy cereal to finish and you have one hell of a gorgeous pudding, full of fresh vibrant flavours and textures, for very little cost. Simmer until strawberries have broken down ... 3-4 mins. Crush fruit with the back of a wooden spoon and then pass everything through a fine mesh sieve. The choir gathered in St Peter’s Sheringham Parish Hall to present Harry with a card signed by all the members and a thank you cheque. To the delight of all present Chairman, Bob Cumber, read a poem written in tribute to Harry by choir member Godfrey Goodman. Bob Cumber and Harry Castle are pictured, right. The previous Saturday saw a splendid Royal Gala concert in the Auden Theatre in honour of the 90th Birthday year of HM The Queen. The foyer was decorated with union flags for the occasion and there was much flag waving in the audience when the concert came to a conclusion with a resounding rendition of Benjamin Britten’s National Anthem following much enjoyed performances of popular works by Handel and Mozart, all with a royal theme, under the direction of Harry Castle. A few days earlier the Society were delighted to be presented, by Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, Sheringham, with a cheque for £500 following their Charity Choices Campaign (left). Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society received the most public votes and we wish to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the trouble to visit N&P Sheringham and vote for us. The donation will enable us to stage another of our free Come & Sing SCCS with soloists and orchestra rehearse for Royal Gala Concert July 2016 events open to the whole community. Zero Balancing works on our bones. It Woodburning, Multi-Fuel & Gas Stoves is a unique body therapy which seeks to harmonise structure and energy in the skeleton. How does it work? With every step we take gravitational forces are transmitted through our bones and our skeleton uses a combination of compression and torque to transmit them. 40 years ago osteopath and acupuncturist Dr Fritz Smith MD created a protocol to mimic the body’s own system of compression and torque so that the quality of the energetic forces travelling through our bones could be altered. He discovered that by changing the quality of the energy flowing through our skeleton people reported feeling more vibrant, more confident, they were sleeping better and in many cases pain-free (often the main reason they consulted him). Is it safe? Yes. ZB touch is gentle and doesn’t involve manipulation of the joints. Who can benefit from Zero Balancing? Anyone! Dr Smith talks about using Zero Balancing for well-being. A feeling of wellbeing comes over us when we are in balance both mentally and physically so the people who seek Zero Balancing often have a wide range of issues. Some people have physical problems “I’ve been in pain for ages and nothing seems to be helping”. Some have mental or emotional concerns “I often feel anxious and I’m fed up with having my head full of busy thoughts”. Some people have experienced a physical or emotional trauma and they haven’t ‘felt right’ since. About Carole O’Shaughnessy. Carole achieved Certified Zero Balancer status in 2007. Wendy Richley, our President, welcomed members and visitors and then asked for a minutes silence to remember Joyce Belding, a long standing member of Holt WI who died recently. Margaret Brandon, Glenn Scott and Gillian Pilgrim showed their Box of Dreams (right) and Fairies which were entered for the WI Norfolk Federation Royal Norfolk Show competition. Both exhibits were much admired. A great deal of thought and work had gone in to the displays. Judith Follows, our treasurer, talked about the Holt sign. As with the previous sign, WI members have been involved in the committee to get it updated. The members agreed that the new sign is much nicer, and voted to give a generous donation towards the costs. Wendy introduced the speaker, Virginia Eade, who told us about ‘A Year in Siberia’. She visited Yekaterinburg close to the Ural Mountains during 1994-5. Before 1992 only government workers lived there. Many of the first Westerners to go, including Virginia’s husband, were helping with farming problems; the break-up of the huge collective farms and advising on milk distribution and dairy products. Although her surroundings sounded rather grim, it was obvious from her talk that Virginia had made the most of her time there, getting to know and enjoy the company of some of the Russians she met. There is no meeting in August but members plan to visit the home of one of our committee who has kindly offered her garden in Binham for fun and a cream tea. There will be a raffle, bring and buy and boat races! On 21st September the speaker will be Robert Smith: Harbour Master, who will talk about Wells-next-the-Sea. First, they will be performing his ‘Twelfth Night’ on the village green by the Copeman Centre and, second, they will be fielding an almost entirely female cast. After all, Shakespeare’s company used boys for the female parts; why not use women for the men’s parts! Should the weather prove unkind, the production will move into the Copeman Centre. The idea is that we will perform rather as Shakespeare’s own company would have ‘tread the boards’; in the round with the audience on all four sides of the performing area. It is intended that this will be more of a community event, a recognition by the villagers of the debt we owe to the greatest British playwright. We also hope that it will introduce Shakespeare to those put off by the solemnity often attached to his name. In fact, Shakespeare wrote for the people and his (to our ears) quaint English need not be incomprehensible. Attendance will be free (contributions will not be refused, of course!) and the audience will be invited to bring their own refreshments, though tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available. Performances will be Sunday 4th September and Sunday 11th September at 2.00pm. WEYBOURNE GOOD COMPANIONS THE HOLT CHRONICLE ~ 01263 712177 On Wednesday, 27th July, twenty members of the Weybourne Good Companions group went on a coach trip to Norfolk Lavender at Heacham. After earlier rain, the sun came out and we all enjoyed a pleasant afternoon exploring the various attractions at the site. The visit concluded with a cream tea which was much appreciated by us all. Many thanks to Sandy Bailey for organising a very enjoyable trip. THE 6th WEYBOURNE FOLK WEEKEND The 6th Weybourne Folk Weekend is almost upon us again. Based at Weybourne Village Hall this year we start at 7.00pm on Friday 19th August through until 7.00pm on Sunday 21st. There will be seven singaround sessions at various times, including one in the garden of the Ship Inn on Saturday night. These provide an opportunity for local musicians and singers to perform in their own particular style. The ‘Summer Mummers’ will be acting their own ‘interesting’ version of the traditional English folk play twice during the weekend. On Friday night the guest artists are Kevin Green, who recently moved from Norwich to North Wales, a very popular and talented singer/musician. We also have The Tildens from King’s Lynn who specialise in American Country music. The guests on Saturday 20th are Tin River who are an excellent trio who perform traditional music and songs. Bill Whalley and Dave Fletcher are visiting from Lincolnshire and are great harmony singers with squeeze box accompaniment. They have been stalwarts in folk circles for many years. Mike Prior is a fine guitarist/singer again from King’s Lynn. On Saturday evening the annual Barndance with Fezziwig Ceilidh Band is at the Village Hall 8.00pm until 11.00pm. This is a fun event and full instructions are given. Why not give it a try. Tickets are £7.00 and we are limited on numbers. Bring your own food and drinks. At the same time, for those who don’t want to dance, there’s ‘Trawling for Songs’ in the garden at The Ship Inn. The guests on Sunday are Nico Dobben singer/songwriter from Holland and The Doohickies who will liven up proceedings with their own brand of foot-stomping folk. No Weybourne Folk Weekend would be complete without a visit from the Blakeney Old Wild Rovers, sea songs and shanties from the best in the area. All in all this promises to be a weekend of top quality musical entertainment in the folk tradition and, apart from the Barndance, it’s free, although we hope that the raffles each day will be well supported to offset the costs of the event. Further details and a programme by e-mail can be had from Tony Baylis 01263 588781 or [email protected]. email: [email protected] Day Trips & Mini-Breaks! The major costs of the refurbishment of the building and equipping it with state of the art displays covering the history of RAF Langham and the Dome Trainer from Langham’s early days as a grass satellite airfield of nearby RAF Bircham Newton, to the final closure of the Dome and the airfield as a flying base for the No 2 Civilian Anti-Aircraft Co-operation Unit (operated by Marshalls of Cambridge), were met by generous donations from a range of donors. In particular, the project was only made possible with the vision displayed by the ‘Friends of Langham Dome’ (FoLD), who were set up in 2010, with the support of Langham villagers in the first instance, but which is now an organisation, which enjoys a much wider support base from both the local area and indeed other ‘Friends’ across the UK. One of the generous donations resulted from the decision by Bernard Matthews PLC to hand over the Dome and surrounding land to the North Norfolk Heritage Buildings Trust, who now own the facility and who are key members of the Trust’s management, as well as being the administrators of the largest grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. However, in the not too distant future the Dome will have to become totally self-funding and as well as meeting day to day running costs, some of the expensive high tech equipment which the Museum uses, will have to be replaced. The first key element of achieving this status is to seek more members of FoLD, who are happy to pay a yearly subscription (currently £15.00 for an individual and which can be gift aided as the Dome is a registered charity), in return for unlimited visits to the Dome. The second key element is to open the Dome more often, particularly during the school holidays, and to open at other times to encourage more educational and special visits by groups, such as schools, RAFA branches, other historic associations etc. but to do this we need to increase our pool of dedicated volunteers to staff the Dome. So we need to ask these bottom line questions to members of our local community and visitors, are you willing to join the ‘Friends’ and ensure the Dome Museum remains available in the longer term, and would you be willing to join our pool of volunteers (for which FoLD membership is encouraged but is not essential). For volunteers, full training is given and you will find that it is a most enjoyable social interaction with members of the public, who are visiting the Dome with a genuine and sometimes very wide ranging interest and knowledge of the history we are displaying. If you would like more information on the Dome and/or wish to join FoLD or volunteer please contact the Dome Manager, Val Bowers on 07762 205578 or e-mail [email protected]. We very much look forward to welcoming you to our friendly and eclectic Dome community. www.holtchronicle.co.uk 23 The Holt Chronicle Issue 357 12th August 2016 AT LEAST MY GRAVY MOVES ABOUT …..! After lunch the guest speaker was Gerard Core who spoke about his father Rene Noyau who was a famous writer from Mauritius, who was also known as Rene Core and by several other pen names. Gerard told us that he really only got to know his father in later life, as his parents were separated soon after he was born. However, he found that his father had been a prolific poet, a surrealist and a writer. His father had been a writer for Mauritian newspapers, a supporter of independence and a great promoter of the Creole language. His writings in Creole would often encourage people to study and further their lives. Rene also had a period of life when he was an artist and continued to write up to his death in 1984. Gerard, his son, was left a lot of his literary works, many unpublished and in time realised what a collection he had got. In 2011 with the help of the Mauritian government he published the first of several volumes of his father’s work. After his talk and questions he was thanked by Norman Barnes for the very interesting presentation. Two men from north Norfolk outbid their former schoolmates in a charity auction to win their dream car, a Maserati, for the weekend. The luxury vehicle was donated to the auction by Marshall Maserati of Peterborough and the old school friends won the Maserati with a bid of £575, part of a £9,000 total raised for charity by the Old Greshamians Ball. Charlie Mack and Duncan Baker were among hundreds of Gresham’s School alumni who attended the Ball reunion on 25th June, which raised money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The pair won the sporty GranTurismo Sport for the weekend with the winning bid. Charlie and Duncan, who attended the school from 1988 to 2003 and 1993 to 1998 respectively, still live locally. Charlie owns a 300-acre farm near Holt and Duncan is a director of the Bakers and Larners department store. Commenting on the auction win, Charlie said: “I remember from driving a couple of Maserati cars several years ago that they are great fun to drive and really stylish. So, when the auction started, both Duncan and I wanted to win the Maserati and decided that we’d go in for it together. We’ve already started thinking about the route we’re going to take and can’t wait to pick it up.” Carole Merry, General Manager at Marshall Maserati, said: “I’m delighted for Charlie and Duncan that they’re going to have the opportunity to drive a Maserati for the weekend. Marshall Maserati is proud to have played a small part in helping to raise so much money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, such an incredibly worthy cause.” Marshall Maserati in Tyrell Park, Peterborough features a bespoke, state-of-the-art showroom along with full service and repair facilities, finished in accordance with the latest Maserati corporate identity. To find out more about the Maserati range or to make an appointment at the showroom, please visit www.marshallweb.co.uk/maserati or call 01733 823564. CROMER & SHERINGHAM INNER WHEEL The Cromer & Sheringham Inner Wheel ladies met during the summer at The Virginia Court Hotel for the monthly meetings and AGM. We all enjoyed a garden party to celebrate The Queens 90th birthday at member Jane’s home at Kelling Heath. Jane provided good food and lovely summer weather! On 13th July we all met at Hamptons Restaurant in Bawdswell to say thank you to our president Carol for all she has done this year; Shay presented her with a gift and flowers. Carol then thanked everyone for all the support she had received during the year and said that £425 had been raised for her chosen charity The Big C. Our next Social event will be a barbecue on 20th August at Rita Holland’s home, this is the president’s gift to us to say ‘thank you’. The next Club meeting will be on 1st September when Carol Selwyn will continue to be President for the coming year. We share a meal together at the Virginia Court Hotel Maureen Ford MBE (left) and in Cromer each month Sybil Taylor, members of the club. with a guest speaker afterwards. We have a lot of fun, enjoy fellowship and try to support those in need in this country and abroad. Our membership is open to any women who would be interested in joining us. For more information about our Inner Wheel club then please contact Carol Selwyn on 01263 513717. HOLT CRICKET CLUB Beeston CC vs Holt CC Dersingham A vs Holt CC Dersingham A 125-9 lost to Holt 128-3 by 7 wickets Holt CC won by seven wickets in their latest league encounter away at Dersingham A. Dersingham reached 125-9 from their 45 overs after being reduced to 18-6 at one stage, due to disciplined and penetrative bowling from Channell (3-5) and Thaxter (3-12). L Bragg (1-26), A Riseborough (1-33), L Riseborough (1-35) got Holt’s other three wickets. Holt chased down 126 for the loss of three wickets in the 21st over, with key contributions from Chapman (46), Channell (43 not out) and A Riseborough (26). This result left Holt in third place, with four games to play. Solutions to No. 191: 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.Nh4 Nd5 3.f3 f6 4.Kf2 Kf7 5.Kg3 Ke6 6.Kg4 Ke5 7.Kh3 Kf4 8.Rg1 Kg5 9.Kg3 Kh6 10.Kf2 Kh5 11.Ke1. The diagram is easily reached in 6 moves each, an even number ending with 6... Kh5 - but White’s stipulated odd number of moves requires the white K to come out and triangulate, performing a dance movement with his opposite number - a circuit and tempo loss by both Ks, adding thematic interest to the task of 4½ double moves. No.192 also shows how a difference in stipulated length can markedly affect the solutions. In part (b) parity considerations for White obviously require a similar manoeuvre to No. 191, so difficulty 2 - and one solving point for each part. On arrival at Narborough Hall we were greeted by the head gardener, who suggested we had tea and biscuits before setting off on the guided tour. Narborough Hall is a Grade II listed country house surrounded by ancient parkland, lakes and woodland. The planting in borders, paths and walks is wild and native self-seeding plants grow amongst herbs, fruit, edible flowers, blackberries and rambling roses. We were invited to gather seeds from the grasses for ourselves. The flowers and grasses are gathered and used for wedding bouquets, buttonholes and floral arrangements for weddings taking place there and are created by the resident florist and head gardener. After lunch we set off for Barsham Hall, which is owned by Mr and Mrs Jeremy Soames. Once again the head gardener took us on a guided tour and explained how he had developed the gardens of approximately ten acres, with mature yew hedging and sunken garden originally laid out by Gertrude Jekyll. There is a swimming pool garden, shrub borders, kitchen garden and herbaceous border, cutting garden, bog garden and an old- fashioned cottage garden. We went back to the house for afternoon tea and delicious cakes, after which Mrs Soames invited us into the house to see paintings by the late Sir Winston Churchill, together with family portraits and artwork, which was unexpected, but very much appreciated. We continued on the guided tour, finishing up at West Barsham church, before setting off for home. Thank you Gill and Tricia for making all the arrangements. Our next meeting is on 12th September when Ian Roofe will give a talk on ‘Plants of the moment’. Meetings will commence at the usual time of 7.30pm with coffee, tea and biscuits available from 7.10pm. Please contact Joyce on 01263 713971 for more information. Corpusty and Saxthorpe Art Group meet every Thursday morning between 10.00am and Noon. Fees are £22.00 for 4 months. Meetings are held in the Village Hall, Heydon Road, Corpusty. BODHAM HORTICULTURAL SHOW from Harry Bruford Bodham Horticultural Show, which was held on Saturday 23rd July, was a great success, considering the wet, early growing season and the heat on the actual day. There were 197 entries and £590.25 was raised for the Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch. Many thanks to the local businesses, who so generously sponsored the Show and to everyone who donated raffle prizes. The raffle was hugely popular and Brenda and Peter did a grand job manning the stall. Many thanks also to Mike Sayer, who called the raffle and ran the auction of produce and made the presentation of the cups. Also to Ann and Jackie, who manned the refreshment stall. Finally, our thanks to everyone, who entered the show and to all who came and enjoyed the teas and the auction. Several mini-scarecrows were also constructed as a sideline. An inventive morning for everyone! Some items were entered in Bodham Horticultural Show and did well. Our thanks to Karen Harris for running the workshop. Webbs Jewellers, 34 High Street, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6BH, UK e: [email protected] | t: 01263 712 575 More true life experiences It was the fourth time my mother-in-law had taken her driving test and the family had been teasing her constantly about her repeated failures. The test centre was at the top of a hill in our busy local town centre, so, on the examiner’s command, my mother- in-law carefully checked her rearview mirror, indicated right, looked over her right shoulder, checked the mirror again, released the handbrake and manoeuvred away from the kerb. This is going brilliantly, she thought to herself as the car glided effortlessly down the road. Her elation was short-lived. “Well done, Mrs Davies,” said the examiner, “But don’t you think it would be a good idea to turn the engine on at some stage?” NORTH NORFOLK PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Annual Exhibition and Photographers of the Year Another Glass Ceiling shattered! North Norfolk Photographic Society’s Annual Exhibition was held in July in St Andrews’ Church Hall this year. This proved to be an excellent location, visitor numbers were well up on previous years and the spacious hall suited the show very well. On the evening of the first day of the exhibition, 27th July, members held a social evening when as well as admiring each others’ pictures, certificates were awarded to those that had done well in competitions over the last year. A special part of the evening was the announcement of the members who had come first, second and third taking all the competitions into account, the Photographers of the Year. Chairman Malcolm Edwards first awarded certificates to Michaela Bone and Karen Spence, who came second and third in the Novice category and then awarded a trophy to the winner of this group, Rob Palethorpe. But anyone who thought that photography was a hobby for men in anoraks got a shock when ladies took first, second and third places in the advanced section, another glass ceiling shattered! The trophy for first place went to Liz Akers (right), with Diana Knight (centre) and Lizzie Wallis taking second and third spots. Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month but after a summer break will resume on September 21st when Barry Freeman will talk about English Monochrome Landscapes. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at [email protected]. email: [email protected] My friend’s elderly mother was telling me about the two ladies who had moved in next door to her. “I can’t understand why there’s no man in the house,” she said. She had her suspicions, so a few weeks later decided to clear things up once and for all. “Hello, Jean,” she said, leaning over the garden fence. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but are you and Lisa leprechauns?” She came back into the house and announced, “Well, she said no and that’s good enough for me.” Silk Pillowcases by Joneth It’s widely recognised that using a silk pillowcase can help to prevent the dreaded bad hair day look!
