Have you ever thought of getting pierced or tattooed? Among young people in the United States tattoos and piercings are becoming more and more popular. Some people admire this and even call it "body art". Other people don't understand why anyone would want such "ugly things" on their bodies. B Why do so many young Americans like body art? People's motivations for piercing or tattooing could be anything from attracting a romantic partner to just trying to be different from others. A tattoo can be a reminder of an important event in someone's life or it can show their taste in fashion. lt can also make people appear "cool" to their social group and so increase their status. Jonathan Daulton, aged 19, has ten piercings on his face. "Honestly, I do it to shock people", says the University 10 of Nebraska student. Another student, 21-year-old Marina Harding from Seattle, Washington, gives her reason as: "This is how I express myself." She likes to wear a T-shirt that says: "l dress this way to shock youl" This statement refers to her bright green hair, and piercings on her tongue, lip, nose and eyebrow, as well as six earrings in each ear. Marina also has eight tattoos and she wants to get more. She 15 says, "l love body art." C On the other hand, doctors point out that certain health risks go along with these forms of self-expression. Possible health problems caused by piercings could be infections and sometimes a long healing time, even up to 12 months. ln addition, the American Dental Association has given a serious warning about tongue 20 piercings. The metal in the tongue hits the teeth during eating and speaking. This can cause cracks or broken teeth. The piercing even sometimes damages nerves in the tongue so that some people can no longer speak or swallow properly. Problems with tattoos can include allergic reactions to the ink and also infections. For both piercings and tattoos, the most serious risks are actually life{hreatening. lfa 25 tattoo parlor doesn't take basic health precautions such as using new latex gloves and new needles for each customer, Hepatitis B and AIDS infections are a big risk. D Although you may be happy with your tattoos and piercings while you're still young, what about when you get older? lf, for example, you have your boyfriend's or girlfriend's name tattooed on your arm and the relationship falls apart, what would you do about the tattoo? Tattoos are painful and expensive to remove. That is why many people prefer temporary tattoos" These last for a few days or even a week. You can remove them easily with oil or lotion. So you can enjoy the fun of "body art" with a new design whenever you like, without any risk. Adapted from: L. Howard. Read and Reflect Awareness. Oxford Universitv Press. 2004.
