hospital’s latest acquisition to enhance its
Ophthalmology services, the LenSx Laser,
which uses femtosecond laser technology to
elevate precision and efficiency in cataract
refractive surgery.
The surgeries were held during the
annual meeting of the Philippine Society of
Cataract and Refractive Surgery on July 12 at
the MDH Metrobank Foundation Hall. The
event was attended by ophthalmologists
from MDH and various hospitals in Metro
Manila.
The first surgery was performed by the
hospital’s very own Dr. Cesar Ramon Espiritu,
who is recognized as one of the country’s top
cataract surgeons and a key opinion leader
locally and internationally. He was followed
by Dr. Sudipto Pakrasi, chairman of the

Manila Doctors Hospital’s PROHEALTH
Center Supervisor, Cecilia Nery, RND was a guest
speaker in the “Diet for the Elderly,” a seminar

by the association’s President, Maria Rosario
Nabing, RMD.
Ms. Nery discussed the importance of
maximizing every meal and snack of older persons
and be able to make it an opportunity for proper
nutrition and find ways to improve their diet to fit
their personal tastes, ability and lifestyle.
According to Ms. Nery, “as people age,
lifestyle and nutrition change. Most often
at this point in time, nutrition suffers due to
mobility limitations or loss of appetite. Thus, it is
important to learn or be aware of the proper diet
for the elderly.”

Drop, cover, hold on!
The metro-wide
shake drill
The blaring of a siren followed by security staff telling
everyone to “Drop!” disrupted the daily activity of people
coming in and out of Manila Doctors Hospital to conduct
their business.
This happened on July 30, 2015, as MDH took part in the
Metro Manila Shake Drill.
Doctors, nurses, patients and staff alike exited the
hospital building and stayed in the “safety zone” just outside
the building until hospital officials declared the place “clear
and safe to return to.”
The drill aimed to simulate conditions before, during and
after Metro Manila is hit by a 7.2 magnitude and intensity 8
earthquake due to the movement of the West Valley fault in
order to gauge and ensure the preparedness of MDH and its
people.
“It was also a chance for the hospital administration to
organize and familiarize ourselves with our Incident Command
System,” said Dr. Geoffrey Corpuz, Chairman of MDH’s Safety
Promotion and Disaster Preparedness Committee (SPDPC).
“This system is part of our response plan for any type of
disaster and can be adapted even in situations where there
are just a few members of administration present just so that
our tasks are well planned and organized,” he added.
After the Shake Drill, MDH will conduct small area pocket
earthquake and evacuation drills within the hospital as part
of its disaster preparedness plan.

Life begins at first breath.
It is with this vital truth that
Pulmonology remains a core competence
in the practice of Internal Medicine,
focusing on the treatment and care of the
respiratory system and bringing advanced
care to the patient’s overall quality of life.
PULMONARY MEDICINE:
A breath of health and excellent care
By Dr. Katrina Gadia, FPCP, Chief Fellow 2015
In any health care unit, pulmonary
care remains a priority. The same holds
true for the Manila Doctors Hospital,
where its Section of Pulmonary Medicine
has upheld the standards of worldclass care and kept at par with the best
institutions of medicine, since its inception
in 1979.
The Pulmonary Physiology and Sleep
Services Laboratory opened on July 9,
1979 with only four staff members, headed
by Dr. Florencio Chavez. Pulmonary
equipment and facilities were acquired
and upgraded since then, and with such
advancement of pulmonary service,
treatment cases increased and the quality
of respiratory care afforded to patients
was improved and maintained.
The Section of Pulmonary Medicine
which consists of 22 consultants is part
of the MDH Department of Internal
Medicine, headed by Dr. Petrarch Bravo.
Its Section Chief is Dr. Aileen DavidWang, who has held the position since
May of 2010 and has successfully steered
the section towards fulfilling its goal of
facilitating cross-disciplinary research to
provide exemplary pulmonary care for
patients.
MDH has instituted a two-year
Pulmonary Fellowship Training Program
in fulfillment of the standards set forth by
the Philippine College of Chest Physicians
(PCCP)
Training
Committee
Core
Curriculum to develop compassionate and
competent pulmonologists who are trained
to manage the physical, psychological and
social aspects of their patients’ illness and
help improve the quality of their lives.
In line with the hospital’s goal of
providing optimal care for its patients,
the Pulmonary Physiology and Sleep
Laboratory offers several diagnostic and
therapeutic procedures and services.
It has a total of 24 fully functioning

ventilators of different types. Patients
can also avail of diagnostic/therapeutic
bronchoscopy as well as interventional
radiologic procedures such as CT guided
biopsy, fluoroscopic guided bronchoscopy,
and ultrasound guided thoracentesis.
The section continuously improves its
standard of services by performing routine
re-calibration of machines and by bringing
in newer and much improved technology.
MDH’s acquisition of equipment aims to
provide high quality diagnostic procedures
and therapeutic services ensuring topof-mind awareness of providing most
advanced evaluation and treatment.
Respiratory therapists and the pulmonary
fellows also attend regular workshops for
such procedures to give them advanced
understanding in diagnosing these
disorders and giving patients the best
treatment possible.
With the rise of the new medical
tower of the MDH, relocation to a larger
area and renovation of the Pulmonary
Physiology and Sleep Laboratory will
give a more comprehensive approach to
patient care. A much bigger space for the
Pulmonary Lab will accommodate more
patients. The newly renovated Lab will also
have designated areas for tests wherein
patients can avail of the services even
without being admitted in the hospital.
Truly, the section of Pulmonary
Medicine will continue to nurture and
protect the gift of the breath of life with
its competent staff and methodical range
of prevention, education, diagnostic, and
treatment services for many years yet to
come.
The Pulmonology-Sensormedics VMAX of the Pulmo Lab
is a state-of-the-art pulmonary stress testing system that
can provide diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for
pulmonary problems.
The MDH Sleep Lab provides diagnostic and therapeutic
procedures for sleep problems like obstructive sleep apnea

effective tool in being able to deliver quality healthcare for economicallychallenged patients by utilizing the Integrated Value Based Approach
in the provision of healthcare involving eight (8) medical departments.
The entry also featured how the CSR programs adhere to the hospital’s
commitment to the ten (10) principles of the United Nations Global
Compact (UNGC) focusing on human rights, good labor practices,
environment and anti-corruption.
“A Thousand and One Ways” is a project of the Department
of Family and Community Medicine to meet the physical/
environmental, social, cultural and economic issues and
concerns of its adopted community.
The program won 2nd place in the Environmental Project
Contest, given by the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians
last February, 2015, and it helped make the barangay as the

A gift of vision for financially
challenged patients
by Elizabeth Garan, MD
The joy gleaming in every patient’s eyes after their

concluded second leg of Share the Gift of Vision (STGOV) 2015 of the
Department of Ophthalmology.
and Metrobank Foundation, has helped around 900 patients from
different parts of the country for the past 15 years. Its goal is to
provide world class quality surgical care to the underprivileged and
visually impaired due to cataract in our society.
13 financially challenged patients benefited from the surgical
program, which was conducted on August 16. Eight (8) of the patients
underwent phacoemulsification, while five (5) were subjected to
traditional extracapsular cataract surgeries.
A special note of gratitude is extended to the department’s
consultants who took time out of their hectic schedules to share
their expertise with the residents, to the operating room nurses
who wholeheartedly volunteered in this quarterly event, and to the
Internal Medicine department, OPD nurses, Hospital staff, CSRO,
Business Development Division, administration staff, and industry
partners, who made the event possible.

MDH sponsors Run 4 Health Research
Manila Doctors Hospital, in partnership with the Philippine Commission for Health
Research and Development (PCHRD), the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST), the Council of Health Research and Development (COHRED), Great Minds
@ Work and Streetwise PR and Events Management, sponsored the Run 4 Health
Research (R4R), a fun run which aims to promote the upcoming Global Forum on
Research and Innovation for Health 2015.
More than 700 runners and enthusiasts participated in the fun run, which took
place on August 9, 2015 at the CCP Complex Sunken Parking in Pasay City.
MDH provided doctors and an ambulance for the medical needs of participants
throughout the event. There were also giveaways for more than 200 runners who
visited the MDH booth after the race.
R4R was initiated by PCHRD not only to promote the importance of having a
healthy lifestyle to avoid noncommunicable diseases (such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer) but also to support the importance of research and innovation
on health to the public, which is the goal of the Global Forum on Research and
Innovation for Health 2015.
This year’s Forum also intends to “identify solutions to the world’s unmet health
needs through research and innovation.” With the Philippines as this year’s host
country, “it aims to provide a truly unique opportunity for low- and middle-income
countries to strengthen their voice in shaping the global health research agenda.”

MANILA DOCTORS HOSPITAL
Giving patient-centered care
MANILA DOCTORS Hospital (MDH), a
private tertiary hospital with an authorized
bed capacity of 300, was established in 1956.
Stationed along United Nations Avenue in
Ermita, it is run by Manila Medical
Services, Inc. MDH is the health care affiliate
of Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), the
corporate social responsibility arm of the
Metrobank Group.
It seeks to harness the latest technologies
available — even those that are not yet readily accessible — in the delivery of its services. For instance, the hospital is the first
to make use of Symbia Intevo xSPECT System in the Philippines and Asia. It has full
capabilities of Dual Computed Tomography
(CT) by nuclear medicine and radiology in
one machine. It can do heart imaging through
Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) and
Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring (CAC);
bone and body imaging; and breast imaging
through Scintimammography, which detects
tumors in not just one area but in several
areas of the breast and also produces very
accurate results eliminating the need for a
second mammogram upon detection.
One
more
demonstration
of
the
hospital’s modernity is its Vision Center, which
is packed with up-to-date facilities, including
a Humphrey visual field analyzer used to test
peripheral vision and the IOLMaster biometer
for precise measurements of intraocular lens
in cataract surgery.
Besides being technologically advanced, one
of MDH’s key strengths lies in the field of
Cardiology, which aims to address a wider
array of patient needs in cardiac care allowing medical practitioners to better care for
their patients on a world-class standard. The
Coronary Care/Telemetry unit caters to
various cardiac conditions that require
continuous intensive cardiac monitoring
and treatment. Whereas, its Cardiovascular
Catheterization Laboratory provides a full
range of diagnostic and interventional
procedures for evaluation and treatment
of adult and pediatric patients with known
and suspected heart, brain and peripheral
diseases.
Another core competency of MDH is in the area
of orthopedics. The hospital has always been
one of the forerunners in Philippine orthopedics. It has different orthopedic subspecialties
like general orthopedics/clinical orthopedics,
arthritis surgery/joint reconstruction, spine
surgery, foot and ankle surgery, traumatology,
hand surgery, microsurgical reconstruction,
orthopedic oncology, pediatric orthopedics
and sports medicine.
MDH has also been noted for its corporate
social responsibility endeavors.
Since 2008, it has won nine awards at the
Asian Hospital Management Awards. One of
its most recent wins was for its project titled
“A Thousand and One Ways Environmental
Protection Projects: Its Impact and Benefits
to the Community and Residents of Barangay
662, San Cristobal, Paco, Manila,” which extended the hospital’s services to its adopted
community.
and has been recognized by Accreditation
Canada International since 2010. Accreditation Canada International is a non-profit organization that facilitates improvements in
the quality of health services. In 2014, MDH
became a reporting member of the United Nations Global Compact, an initiative that aims
to create a sustainable and global economy
with lasting benefits to people.
Now in its continuing efforts to provide quality
and safe health care, MDH has laid the cornerstone for a new medical tower that will house
more diagnostic services, specialty centers,
patient rooms and doctors’ clinics.
What makes MDH and the practice different
from other hospitals is not what it does or
who it serves, but how it does things better.
Its uncompromising standards and corporate
culture support the organization’s core values
that translate in daily practices of aligning its
physicians and staff to a shared mission of
delivering world-class patient-centered care.
Through the years, it has been an
unceasing quest for MDH to get better. The hospital continues to develop its
medical staff and support departments. It
is an ISO 9001:2008 accredited institution

Safety is everyone’s job:
JIL volunteers and pastors learn
disaster preparedness and basic life support
by Anne Kristine R. Ochavo
“Safety is everyone’s job.”
This was the reminder given by Mr. Julius Kabiling, member of the MDH Safety Promotion
and Disaster Preparedness Committee (SPDPC) and Head of MDH Medical Records, during the
disaster preparedness and basic life support training given to Jesus is Lord (JIL) Church pastors
and iCare Compassion Ministries, Inc. coordinators held at JIL Ortigas Center.
The training aims to equip the participants on how to prepare and respond in times of
disaster. Dr. Faith Gaerlan, of the MDH Department of Emergency Medicine, also taught Basic
Life Support.
The training is part of MDH and iCare’s disaster and resiliency programs. After the training, the pastors and other trainees from iCare were expected to impart their knowledge to the

prevent and respond to sexual harassment that may occur in the workplace. It is
also one of MDH’s actions to solidify its commitment to the United Nations Global

&Exercise: It’s National Nutrition Month

Nutrition Management Services (CNMS), in cooperation with the
Clinical and Therapeutic Dietitians from the Dietary Department
and PROHEALTH Center, nurses, pharmacists, consultants and
other medical staff of Manila Doctors Hospital launched its

Food is G ood Food!
t was only recently this year
that news of food poisoning
incidents occurred here in our
country, with culprits ranging
from preserved candies to
pasta dishes. One can’t help
but ask how something designed to
give us nourishment can lead us to
harm?
Unfortunately, this is a reality that can
happen to anyone. Food borne illnesses or poisoning can be detrimental
to even the healthiest of us and even
more so to children, pregnant women, elderly and the immuno-compromised. That said, prevention, can be as
easy as practicing safe food handling
guidelines!
Safe food handling is a concept that is,
more often than not, foreign to most.
However, it is a vital component in ensuring that everyone gets clean and
nutritious food. The US Center for Disease released a guideline called “Four
Steps to Food Safety” that can be used
in even the simplest of homes to keep
families safe from food related hazards.
by Riz Ivana L. Teng
CLEAN. Bacteria can spread everywhere and leaving one area unchecked
may lead to germs spreading to all corners of your kitchen and contaminating everything in its path. When that
happens, nothing is safe.
Preparing food using clean hands,
materials and work areas should be a
cardinal rule in any kitchen, so do not
skimp on time you spend cleaning and
sanitizing!
SEPARATE. Learn to separate your
raw meats and produce from cooked
dishes. Remember, there are millions
of different kinds of bacteria and they
can be found everywhere. The last
thing you want to do is have one type
of bacteria spreading or transferring
to another food item, or as we call it,
cross contamination. This is especially
common when handling raw ingredients such as meats alongside cooked
or ready to eat food.
COOK. Make sure you cook your food
to the right temperature - internal
temperature to be specific. We usually
judge a food’s doneness by looking at
its external appearance and through
touch; however, it is not enough to
base a food’s doneness. Why? Well,
how many of you have experienced
making meatballs or fried a piece of
whole chicken and ending up burning
them or even cooking them to a beautiful golden brown only to find the insides pink and raw?
CHILL. Refrigerate food immediately if
not yet for consumption or use. This
slows down bacterial growth making
food safe for consumption even after
a period of time. A refrigerator temperature of 40o F or below and freezer
temperature of 0o F or below is ideal
for food storage. Just remember not
to overstuff the fridge as air circulation
is important in maintaining the right
temperature.
Simple as they are, following these
four steps may be the key to keeping
your family and consumers safe and
away from any food poisoning incidents in the future. So start practicing
safe food handling in your homes and
offices!
